Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

2 Apartments, each w/ 2 Bedrooms + 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5-10)

Extrovert? You found your place. Privacy upstairs, endless interaction possibilities downstairs. You pick. Nowhere else can boast such a set-up. Two x 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartments great for 4-10 people. Big terrace with BBQ overlooking pool.

Sitting above Playa Grande's premier surf shop, you have your own spacious apartment upstairs but a full staff ready to help you downstairs. Concierge on-tap. Conversation and interaction on a whim. Feel like part of something while on vacation, but without fear of losing your personal space.

Some regular comments from customers whom we show our apartments to "WOW! I never knew something so great existed above the shop!" "We MUST book this place next time we come", "I am going to tell my friends back home about this place" and "you guys have really found your niche here".... we have great reviews from years of service :)

Pool is shared between the two apartments. There is a bamboo fence providing a little privacy between pool area and back of surf shop... however it is not considered private. Our friendly staff will be going about their work, and although they are very considerate of your space, you will likely hear them going about their work... There is an outdoor hot water shower beside pool, poolside toilet, upstairs separate rancho space to hang out and listen to nature- great space for the teens to chill or for you to practice yoga.

Corynne and Ian, along with son Finnegan (7 years old) are the active owners/ managers of Frijoles Locos Surf Shop, however it is the wonderful staff who are there when you need them- just pop into the surf shop and chat with them between 9.15am and 5.30pm. Our full time staff downstairs in our surf shop are always ready to help you (so long as the retail store isn't super busy!)... email contact always attended to if you have special requests.

We respect your privacy and won't come knocking on your door unless there is an urgent message... yet we are available to help when you need us. Email continues to be a good way to address issues such as malfunctioning AC or other property management problems while you are here especially if the retail store downstairs is busy!

Our concierge service prior to arrival is second to none, and we recommend a little advance planning to maximize relaxation and adventure balance when you are here.

Located next door to Playa Grande school, the sounds of happy kids playing are common during the morning until around 12 noon. On the other side, is located another lot owned by Frijoles Locos, and no other buildings are nearby.

Renting a car is recommended for those of you who know who you are :) If a 7-8 minute walk to the beach pulling a beach cart laden with beach equipment or carrying a surfboard to the beach doesn't sound like fun, rent a car!

If you might want to search for smaller, or different waves, definitely rent a car. We loan you straps to put surfboards on the roof with any rental from Frijoles Locos Surf Shop... so its easy and no fuss...

If a 12 minute bicycle ride to the nearest decent sized mini-supermarket sounds like a drag... rent a car! If you don't like to feel isolated, ask us for help in arranging a rental car to be dropped off at your apartment - we recommend getting an airport shuttle on arrival, having a car delivered next day when you are relaxed and settled in... keep it for 3 or 4 days... use it to get groceries, to explore the greater area, to do some activities that cost SO much more if you have to include the transport eg. One Day Adventure or a trip to Playa Danta...

Don't rely on public transport- the bus comes once in the morning, and once in the afternoon. Those of you who can really take a step back and take it slow, with a little adventure, can get by just renting bikes and walking around the area. Plenty of restaurants in walking distance. A taxi to Tamarindo costs around $30 one way. Rental car can be dropped off to the apartment with advance planning and parking is available on the property.

Important note - the laundry facilities are operated by our cleaning lady- her days off are Sunday and Monday. One load of laundry is included free in a 7 day stay, however additional loads are $10 per load. Water restrictions are in place until further notice and we ask guests to be very conscientious when it comes to responsible management of water.

We provide detailed info upon reservation confirmation. If you read the info package and decide that our policies don't go with your vacation style, you are welcome to change your mind without penalty within 5 days of your reservation.

Playa Grande, Costa Rica is one of the worlds' most beautiful gems. A beach over 4km long, white sand, is perfect for long walks . Come see the Leatherback Turtles nesting between October and February. A surfer's paradise for all levels, Playa Grande has something for everyone.

*** Please note, our calendar availability reflects both our apartments, the blocked dates mean that BOTH apartments are booked. If it is unmarked, at least one apartment is available. Please inquire and if we cannot accommodate you, we will assist you to find an alternative.

Wonderful apartment in a quiet, beautiful surf town

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 had a fantastic vacation in Playa Grande! This 2 bedroom apartment above the surf shop was absolutely perfect. The comfortable beds, living room and spacious kitchen made this the perfect home away from home for us. We were so grateful to the owners and staff that helped us learn how to surf, booked our excursions and gave us the best recommendations for restaurants. There are so many walkable, delicious places to eat. The hardest decision was picking one! Our kids loved swimming in the pool, petting the shop dogs and just hanging out when we weren't exploring Costa Rica and all their beautiful beaches. This area is the perfect place for a relaxing, fun vacation. We will definitely be back! Pura Vida!

Awesome stay in Playa Grande

  • 5 of 5

Our group of nine (2 families with boys aged 9 to 16), stayed at the Frijoles Locos apartments for our whole 2 weeks in Costa Rica. Ever since the get-go, Corynne was wonderful in responding to our numerous questions about life in Grande and also the different activities we wanted to take part in.

First off, the setup is the best for either 1 or 2 families. We would each have our own apartment, which were well furnished. AC worked A1, we did a lot of cooking and had everything we needed, beds were super comfortable, Wifi worked awesome for the kids (for when we were not at the beach). The pool was great to relax in after tough day surfing.

We also took in seven days of surf lessons for the kids and the adults. As first time surfers, we were driven to the beach in the great beach taxis in order to catch the best waves. Our master instructor Ian stayed further out with the boys who were catching great waves and had a blast. The parents stayed closer to shore catching smaller but fun waves with either JC, Andreas or Sebastien, all great instructors. Each instructor would share their tricks and by the end of our 2 weeks, we were catching great waves.

Staying above the surf shop was great for us as there was always a friendly face available to answer our questions or help us order some yummy fish and veggies from the local suppliers. The kids would also get a bunch of high fives and smiles as they would come across their surf instructors. The crew at Frijoles Locos really made us feel like we were part of the family. Our youngest grew attached to Loca the dog, who actually stayed a couple of nights with us.

We always felt safe staying at Frijoles and we also had diner at El Huerto and Kike's Place right around the corner, two great options to give us a break from cooking.

If you are looking for a nice quiet surf town with great waves, beautiful sunsets, far from the commercial hustle, this is THE place.

All nine of us are unanimous in saying that this was one of the best vacations we have ever had in such a beautiful part of the world.

Everything we wanted and more

  • 5 of 5

A group of 8 rented both apartments for 10 days at the end of February 2015. The two apartments joined together with the door on the terrace worked perfect for us. Frijoles Locos location in Playa Grande is peaceful, safe and quiet. The only thing better than the apartments themselves were the people. Corynne, Ian, Felix, and the staff in the surf shop and spa were more than willing to accommodate our every request. We booked four different tours through the surf shop and were able to rent anything we needed for a day on the beach. Corynne gave us guidance well in advance of our arrival on which tours we should book in advance and which tours we would be able to book once we arrived. She never steered us wrong and the whole group was glad she booked us a tour in the Palo Verde national park with Javier from Loving Costa Rica as soon as she did. We never rented a car during our stay in Costa Rica and Frijoles Locos was able to arrange transportation for us anywhere we wanted to go with Tamarindo Travel including getting us to and from Liberia when we arrived and left. I would recommend Frijoles Locos to anyone from a family with young kids to a group of adults just looking to get away. I look forward to going back Costa Rica and Frijoles Locos in the future.

Our Home Away From Home

  • 3 of 5

Our stay at Frijoles Locos was fantastic. Corynne was so helpful with planning, Ian was great with surf tips and necessities, the whole staff was so helpful and could not do enough for us. Our apartment was perfect. Large kitchen, spacious terrace, inviting swimming pool, cool AC and plenty of ceiling fans for comfort on hot days/nights. We loved the comfy beds, luxurious linens/towels, and complimentary soap/shampoo/conditioner. We really felt like we lived here and really can't wait to go back. We arrived late and Corynne provided coffee and milk for the morning, which we so appreciated. Our only regret was that our stay was too short to see and enjoy it all. Thank you, Corynne, Ian and all the great staff at Frijoles Locos.

Owner's Response: Hi Mike and Tara, Pam and Chuck :) It was such a pleasure having you stay with us. Thank you to Lenny for recommending you book your apartment at Frijoles Locos. We very much enjoyed your company, and are happy you loved your stay. We were thrilled to read your kind review, though momentarily confused by the 3 star rating, however after emailing with you to ask what we could have done to make it 5 stars, we know it was a mistake and you told us you don't remember having an option to put a star rating, and if you had it would have been at least 5 stars!! :) Wishing you all the very best, and a heartfelt thanks for visiting us here in Playa Grande. Warm regards, Corynne, Ian and Finnegan.

This Place is Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Frijoles Locos in November '13 and had an awesome time! Corynne, Ian, and the entire Frijoles Locos staff was super friendly and helpful. Corynne was very timely and responsive to my multitude of questions ranging from local attractions to surfboard shapes. I felt like I knew the staff before we even arrived. Once there, we were beyond impressed with the apartment. High ceilings, tile floors, and nice furniture made for a great place to crash after a long day on the water.

The surf shop was superb and the selection of boards to rent truly exceeded my expectations. If I wasn't feeling a particular board, they let me swap it out for something I felt more at home on. Best of all, the boards were in great shape and I didn't mind being seen stroking a "rental".

I really like Playa Grande because it doesn't have a real 'touristy' vibe to it like other places in CR. The beaches aren't super crowded and the local surfers seemed mellow, all things considered (proper surf etiquette still applies here). There are multiple breaks down the beach so if the main one is a tad crowded, no biggie... just walk a few hundred meters and you're good.

Frijoles Locos is a class leading outfit and with all of the other lodging options available in Costa Rica, I'll be coming back to this place.

First Time/Forever Fans

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time in Costa Rica. We enjoyed every minute of our relaxing vacation and found it hard to leave. The home was inviting and staff from the surf shop were so friendly and very helpful. Marcos was so friendly and asked us everyday what we were going to do and gave us suggestions that made our stay even more enjoyable. Thank you Marcos! The home is very comfortable and has everything we needed. The porch provided many star gazing opportunities and a wonderful breakfast setting. The shooting stars, howling monkeys, local bird species singing and a cool breeze made it so relaxing. When the wind died down we could hear the ocean. The thing we embraced was the Pure Vida life. Walking the beach every day at least twice and exploring the surrounding area was fantastic. We ventured to many beaches and thoroughly enjoyed having our own vehicle. The roads were good (sometimes adventurous) and we found that people drove carefully, unlike our Dominican Republic experience. The local restaurants each had their own unique style but all of them had wonderful wait staff and very good food. Huerto's Pizza is exceptional and Eric at Rip Jack Inn restaurant was one of our favorite waiters. The food is always amazing. Try the hot garlic shrimp. We wish we didn't wait for the last night to try it. Take time to talk to people and you will find them to be a likable and inviting community. Ian, Corryne and their boy Finnegan were all so charming and easy going. We thank you so much for providing a home in the middle of paradise. We enjoyed it and needed the time a way. We look forward to making Costa Rica our future vacation destination for years to come. We want to share it with everyone.

God bless you all at Frijoles Loco!

About Corynne

Corynne, Ian and Finnegan, along with Loca the chocolate labrador and our friendly staff at Frijoles Locos, are your hosts here in Playa Grande. We love to spend time at the beach, surfing, traveling and family time here in paradise!

We look forward to meeting you, and helping you make the most of your time here.

When we travel, we know how much planning it takes to create a great vacation. We want to make your stay with us as enjoyable, fulfilling and comfortable as possible. We will stock your fridge/ kitchen if you wish, so that you can relax when you arrive... as this is what we like to enjoy when we travel. We, as a family, understand what little things make your stay just that much more pleasant, and hope that you enjoy your stay with us enough to tell your friends! We are looking forward to meeting you!

Corynne purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Corynne chose Playa Grande Estates

Playa Grande was the first town we lived in here in Costa Rica. We loved it from the start, and decided to buy land here, then build our surf shop, day spa and rental apartments here. The town is small, barely able to call it a town, and we love it that way. The beach is stunning, so long, perfect for taking walks. It is a great lifestyle.

We love to hear the monkeys, and birds in the trees. The turtle nesting season brings the chance of encountering a nestful of little baby turtles making their way to the ocean on your morning walk.... keep an eye out for the massive turtle tracks that line the beach some mornings!

What makes this apartment unique

Staying in our rentals, you will have the peace of mind that someone is always around, keeping an eye on the place for your added security. Due to our shopfront being downstairs, you have someone onsite at all times to take care of any activities you may like to enjoy, as well as discounted spa/ massage treatments, surf lessons- a must do Costa Rica activity, surfboard rental, snorkel equipment- the list goes on...

Guestbook comments from the owner

this is Rob...we spoke back and forth about six weeks ago. Remember, I was the guy who disdained the "blinding white" European tourists in Costa Rica? ;)

How are you? I wanted to tell you: Diana and I stopped by Frijoles a few times, and we LOVED it! We met your husband, and he was kind enough to show us your accommodations. Nice guy! Great shop too, very beautiful and clean.

Just wanted to say hello and mention this: when we come back to Playa Grande next time, we're definitely gonna stay at Frijoles...and bring our friends this time! We didn't care so much for the cockroaches, ants, termites, and spiders who visited us in our hotel next time, Frijoles it is! :D

Best of luck to you guys, hopefully we'll be seeing you around this time next year!!

Pura vida!
