Rare Creekside Setting

Bedrooms 2
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Especially in the late winter and early spring, the sound of rushing water is the first thing to greet you when you step out of your car in front of the cabin.

The warmth of a huge fireplace, the view from floor to ceiling windows to enjoy the forest scene, and the sound of the creek -- it doesn't get much better.

Note: We are located in Fern Valley, Idyllwild's upscale neighborhood just one mile from cabin door to center of town. Pine Cove is not within walkable distance to Idyllwild, so if you want to take advantage of all this quaint town has to offer, yet still experience a quiet setting, Idyllwild is the place to be. We have a fabulous location with great flat access; Town center is an easy walk with shops, restaurants, and museum along the way -- and right on the creek -- a rare find in vacation cabins.

There's lots of great cabins in Idyllwild -- but very few offer our unique creekside setting. Combine that with the luxury of being well set back from the road (another Idyllwild rarity) and privacy from neighbors, and you've really got something special.

White Horse offers a peaceful mountain retreat, one hour from North San Diego County. Huge, inviting fireplace, woodsy setting on the water, and a great deck to take it all in. The view from the small dining table overlooks our deck and beyond to the creek's rocks and small waterfalls. On a quiet day, it's not uncommon to see deer strolling down the creekbed. The cabin's wood interior and huge fireplace provide the expected mountain ambiance, yet this home provides all the modern conveniences. Whether used as a romantic honeymoon venue, a fun-filled family retreat, or just a cozy cabin getaway, this place is special.

This classic mountain cabin occupies over a half acre of fenced horse facilities, making this a very unique property. And yes, there really is a white horse at White Horse Cabin (30-year-old Stanlee, but he belongs to the owners and only visits when they are in residence!) However, guests with and without horses will enjoy the home's unique privacy, yet close proximity to all that Idyllwild has to offer.

This home is much loved and used by its owners, thus providing our guests an instant feeling of 'home' instead of 'rental.' Idyllwild is a very special place, with an atmosphere that is getting very hard to find in Southern California. Guest comments routinely remark on our home's ambiance, privacy, huge deck and creekside setting.

This is a very family-friendly town, where kids can paint and fire ceramics at a local shop, attend fun/educational events at the County's Nature Center just outside of town, visit the skate park, or explore the creek right outside your back door at White Horse. Mom and dad can enjoy fine or casual dining, see a first-run movie, listen to live music any night of the week, or check out the Idyllwild museum showcasing the area's rich cattle country/mining heritage.

About Kathy Styles

We wanted a close-by retreat from our North San Diego County Home--someplace we could enjoy ourselves, plus share with others.

Kathy Styles purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Kathy Styles chose Idyllwild

We searched for mountain horse property for a long time--it's rare in Idyllwild. The size of the lot, plus the fabulous creek setting was irresistable!

What makes this cabin unique

White Horse Cabin has that location, location, location wow factor. The woods, the water, the classic A-frame cabin. After a few quiet moments on that deck overlooking the water, picturing our horses content in the big shaded paddock out front--we were hooked.

Excellent Location

  • 5 of 5

Location at it's best, just a short drive to town. The views from the house were beautiful, cedar, pine, and oak trees surrounding the property. The house had everything to make our stay terrific with special care of the extras. The TV's were flat screen with direct tv, lots of stations. Most places in Idy do not have the greatest tv or the comfortable beds, this house had it all. Yes it is a cabin, I would recommend this cabin to any one.. Kathy, the owner, was terrific to deal with, you can't find a better owner. Thank you Kathy.

Perfectly placed A frame cottage

  • 4 of 5

Property was as advertised, a bit dated in decor, which is actually part of the charm, though the deck is in need of some TLC so be careful or don't be barefoot outside. The cabin is perfectly situated geographically; easy walk to the 'downtown' area, and close to popular hiking paths.

We did have some housekeeping issues when we first arrived, but Kathy (owner) was easily reached and fixed the issue ASAP. Would stay again.

Much needed get-away!

  • 4 of 5

My hubby and I just spent a couple of much-needed, relaxing days in the mountains. This adorable A-frame cabin takes you back to the 1970's with such features as an immaculate electric GE stove with controls right in the wall! And, we loved jamming to the Neil Diamond and Dolly Parton 8-track tapes and exploring the creek just a few feet away. Not a big fan of the "bear rug" that stared at me while I was making dinner, but we named him "Barry, the Dead Bear-Bear" after one of our daughter's little stuffed animal bears, "Barry, the Bear-Bear". Ha, ha....yes, we may need to get out more.

I caution folks heading up during the summer gets pretty warm in Idyllwild in the middle of the summer. We live just an hour away in the valley and we thought that it would be cooler in the mountains, but it wasn't. Thankfully, the owners had two portable fans that we used (and I brought one too). The evenings were very comfortable, we ate on the deck both nights, the master bedroom was very comfortable to sleep in, and the cabin was very comfortable until the early afternoon and then after in the early evening. Just a "heads up" for those who are sensitive to heat...the cabin reached 89 degrees during the middle of the day.

We've rented a lot of cabins/vacation rentals and hope that the owners won't mind a couple of suggestions that will make fellow renters feel more at home:

(1) Aluminum foil- We do VRBO so that we can cook a lot of our meals. Foil is a welcome necessity. And a clean grill too.

(2) Saran wrap- "same"

(3) While the cabin seemed pretty clean, there were a lot of spider webs, dead moths and flies on all of the window sills. Upon check-in, there were two very large, dead, "daddy long-legs" spiders in sink. Of course, it's not lost on me that the cabin is in the woods....but, perhaps, the cleaning crew can concentrate a little more on these's the tiny details.

Overall, Kathy, we had a wonderful time. We'd love to come back in the winter. That fireplace looks amazing and I can see how cozy the cabin will be when it's chilly outside. Thank you for inviting us into your second home. Hoping to be back someday.

Cozy cabin among the trees

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay and a chance to get away. Close enough to town center for easy access to restaurants but far enough to feel like you are away from the hustle and bustle. Our son loved the loft area and the stream in the back.

Ranger station was super helpful in finding an easy hike (Ernie Maxwell trail) and we learned a few things at the nature center

Owners were helpful in recommending restaurants and responsive to our questions.

Location = ideal-wild

  • 4 of 5

Tranquil setting, creek flowing strong in May. Nice walk to the better restaurants in town: (Idyology, Cafe Aroma, Tommy's). Close access to Humber Park: Devil's Slide Trail and Earnie Maxwell Trail. Nice large deck overlooking boulders, trees, and creek below. Towering pines all around and black oaks with fresh new leaves on the branches. Plenty of sunshine on the deck and shade if you want it. Some things do need to be updated: deck needs a good sanding and water seal coating, screen sliders are essentially non functional aside from the main slider entrance. But, you're in the woods, so it's not a big deal unless you're there for the wrong reason. The main thing that needs to be improved are the beds and bedding sheets; the main bed in the back room is well worn and sagging, which may cause some backaches. Top beds in the loft are definitely for children (but I slept on the bed to the right and was fine, actually supported my back better than the bed downstairs!). The comforters up stairs were too thin and more for summer temps which it was not in early May. Steep stairs/ladder to the loft made it fun, but be careful, if you fall you will be ending your trip early. Best part, excellent fireplace! I thoroughly enjoyed my fires late into the nights. Great cassette tapes to play on their old school stereo system. Whiskey, Kris Kristofferson's Greatest Hits, and a crackling fire in the mountains; does one really need much else? This place is a winner in my book. Get down in that creek and do some exploring too!!

Only a few hours from LA but the perfect get away from the city!

  • 5 of 5

Only a few hours from LA but the perfect get away from the city! We were here for a few days and really enjoyed the cabin as well as the surrounding area. I honestly can't think of anything this cabin is missing from being set back off the road, to the perfect fireplace, the fenced in dog run, and the sound of the creek from the huge deck!

I would absolutely stay here again in the future!

Thank you Kathy!
