Casita, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2) NO smoking
Hi! -- if we don't have the nights you want, please check out our other listing VRBO 138474. It's on the same piece of land and has a separate entrance, larger yard, awesome view!
Note: dog policy at the end :D
The casita (this listing) is located on a high ridge between Taos and Ski Valley on the Valdez Rim Road with a spectacular view of the Valdez Valley. An authentic old adobe casita, it's serene, quiet and private. Only 15 beautiful minutes up the mountain to the ski lift, five minutes to the charming town of Arroyo Seco with great restaurants and shops, and a lovely 20-minute drive back to town!
Adjacent to an artist's home, the casita features TWO kiva fireplaces, skylights, saltillo tile floors, and an old viga beam ceiling - a typical Taos adobe! And a large portal (porch) to enjoy the cool breezes and the awesome view. It has it's own laundry room and it's own, fully-equipped kitchen. Honestly, you can pay a lot more and not find a place as wonderful!
(See the floor plan by clicking on the 'FLOORPLAN' link which follows.)
The living room has a banco (a large window seat) with a wonderful view of the valley and mountains, a signed kiva fireplace built by a local legend (this 73-year-old Hispanic genius - a grandmother - climbed on the roof with a chainsaw to cut the hole for the chimney!), and a satellite TV with over 100 channels. A single futon in the living room is available for sleeping, as is the couch and a large window seat (banco).
A complete laundry room comes with washer and dryer, a fullly equipped kitchen with colorful Mexican tiles, a romantic bedroom with down comforters, a queen-sized bed and a kiva (traditional New Mexican fireplace). The casita has it's own entrance and a separate telephone line so you can be very quiet and private.
This old home is a local landmark with a wonderful view out over the Valdez Valley to the Sangre de Cristo mountains from two covered porches.. wonderful for writing, painting, or simply getting away from it all.
Our check-in time is 3:00, checkout is 11:00 -- we know you'll hate to leave!
Pets: The casita has a private entrance and separate fenced yard -- we welcome one or two good dogs.*(see note). Sorry, no cats (our good dog will eat them).
Smoking: There is NO SMOKING in the casita.
TO MAKE A RESERVATION: We have a 3-night minimum. We are not often home to answer the phone! Thanks.
*dogs must be housebroken, people! No peepads. No pooping in the house! I can't believe I had to say this.

Do you like my self-portrait? I'm a former D.C. lobbyist, a sometime artist who drove up the canyon road past the hairpin turn one weathery afternoon, over the top to the view, and into the rest of my life.
firstname.lastname@example.org purchased this Cottage in 1999
Why email@example.com chose El Prado
The old adobes of Taos are very special. Handmade, each one unique, with soft welcoming curves. History, romance, old legends, an historic neighborhood, and astoundiing views.
What makes this Cottage unique
The casita was originally a workshop with a primitive bedroom and bath. It was so much fun creating a unique, special, evocative place to relax and be inspired. Old adobe is magical. The magic rubs off -- you'll see!

Wonderful! Comfortable NM! and Peaceful!
Was everything we needed in a cozy home base to linger over breakfast or have an early night in--loved the kiva stove! Great bike ride on back roads to Arroyo Seco while my husband took a ski day. Also took a day trip to the upgraded version of Ojo Caliente, I did a yoga class there while my husband biked their trail to the Mica Mine. Soaked and really enjoyed the moist steam room! Ann made this last minute get-away so easy! With gratitude!
What a lovely place to relax and enjoy the uniqueness of the high desert!
The casita was perfect for us. Cozy, clean, and cheerful.
Great character in the casita
I spent four wonderful days and night at this casita. I have to agree with many of the other reviewers that the property was very comfortable, clean, and overall was a very pleasant experience. The response from the owner, Ann, was very quick, and she included excellent instructions on how to find the property. The casita featured salitillo floors in all of the rooms, except for the bathroom, with was decorated in Mexican tile. I also enjoyed the vigas ceilings along with the New Mexico inspired furniture.I will certainly choose to stay here rather than any hotel when traveling to the Taos/Arroyo Seco area.
Great views, beautiful house
Loved that this was halfway between Taos and Taos Ski Valley where we hiked Wheeler Peak. Bed was comfortable, views were stunning, neighborhood was peaceful, and the art is delightful. Would happily stay here again.
Fun and funky - perfect for two!
What a fun and funky casita! Adobe style with mudded walls, tile floor (look for the little peculiar ones here and there!), and 2 fireplaces! Bed was super comfortable - best bed I've slept on in all of my travels. Plenty of pillows and blankets. Chairs and couch were very comfortable as well - perfect for après ski when you are too tired to do anything but fall onto the couch! Lots of storage areas for all your gear, plus plenty of freezer and fridge space for all the hippy food available at the grocery store. The casita overall, is very cozy, warm, and inviting.
Owner was very nice, extremely easy to contact, and left perfect instructions and hints for anything you can imagine.
Surprisingly simple to find and an easy drive to Taos Ski Valley. Just a straight shot! Also just moments away from Arroyo Seco - an interesting community with little shops and eateries.
Plan on staying again for our next TSV trip!
My mother, my fur baby and myself had the absolute best time. The Casita is beautiful and the perfect size. A warm fire and good books was the relaxing break we needed. We traveled a long way to see snow and boy did we get it. The view of the valley and mountains covered in white powder kept us in the window seat and on the porch. Wildlife (Long Horn Sheep, Rabbits and Deer) were out on the mountains and in the yard next door.
5 Museums, more than 85 Art Galleries, great restaurants, historic homes, Taos Pueblo. Beautiful scenery. Great for artists, photographers, writers, poets.
