Peaceful 10 acre forested retreat on quiet 11 acre spring-fed lake. The house is on 2 levels with 4 bedrooms, 2 baths and a small rustic cottage with 1 bed. This is a comfortable, well appointed country home; light and open, surrounded by forest, hills and the lake. Windows look out in every direction.
The main area on the 2nd floor includes a large, fully equipped kitchen adjoining a small deck with a gas grill. Also on this level is the living room and dining room with a wood stove (electric heat is also throughout the house), high wood paneled ceiling and a large deck. A queen size bedroom, twin bedroom, office with computer, and bathroom complete the upstairs.
Downstairs is a queen bedroom, small bedroom with a twin and trundle bed, library with satellite TV-DVD and a hide-a-bed sofa, laundry, and the 2nd bathroom. Outside is a fenced garden with the small cottage which sleeps 1. The back door opens to a deck and a large hot tub with high powered jets.
Open meadows around the house are for running and playing or watching deer and birds and night=time stargazing. The lake is private, shared by 4 other houses, mostly wooded with areas of wetlands, undeveloped and natural. A dock provides great swimming, sunning, and bird watching, or cross country skiing in the winter. It is linked to 2 more small lakes accessible by canoe from the dock. Northern pike are easy to catch with lures and a half mile walk leads to another lake that the Forest Service stocks with trout. Miles of Forest Service roads lead into a gentle wilderness. Tally lake, with a public campground and sandy swimming beach is an 8 mile bike ride (or drive) away.
If you have a larger group consider combining with the neighboring Lodge at Griddle Cake Lake #77149 on VRBO.
Mike retired from a career as a mathematician and manager at Boeing 22 years ago. Jill did graduate work in psychology at The University of Chicago but 3 kids defined her role for years. She is also a painter and has been a spiritual teacher for 20 years.
The Owner purchased this house in 1991
Our life is focused outdoors. We ski, x/c ski, snowshoe, hike, mountain bike, float rivers, paddle our lake, fish, swim, bird, backpack, and golf. Mike has lived in Europe and Japan and has travelled all over the US. He has skied for 65 years at most major resorts. There is no place that fits us like the Flathead Valley. We've tried it all and the only way we'll leave the valley is when our ashes blow over the connental divide.
The peace and quiet. The numerous birds and animals. The gentle waters of the lake for swimming. The forest service roads for walking, snowshoeing, and skiing. Being 15 minutes from town, 30 minutes from my favorite ski area and 45 minutes from Glacier Park
Dear Mike & Jill,
Thank you so much for doing this with your retirement home! How lucky we are!
It was really great to e-mail with you prior to our stay, and by looking around your house, you seem like people I would like to get to know! Thanks you for all the maps you left (we used the kid's map quite a bit and you may have to make a new one for the next group).
We caught 4 large pike, saw 2 turtles, something brown and furry in the water, a mother doe and fawn on your front lawn, several herons, a falcon, and dozens of very brave hummers.
Your property is beautiful and though I'm not much of a snow bunny, I imagine it is a winter wonderland.
Thank you once again and I imagine we may see you again.
My husband and I travel to Montana every year on vacation. For most of these trips, we've used VRBO to rent an entire home that can sometimes cost less than one room / bath at a national park.
This home was an exceptional value for the money. It's quite spacious, with 4 bedrooms, 2 baths and all the amenities - including a wonderful large hot tub which came in very handy for easing sore muscles after a long hike.
The views were beautiful and the wildlife seemed to visit almost daily; tom and hen turkeys, and a doe with fawn. Seeing the fawn prance around the tom turkeys (obviously wanting to play) and they wanting nothing to do with it was hilarious.
And, I even caught an 18 inch northern pike out of the lake from the dock just using worms as bait.
The best review is one that says, I can't wait to stay there again. And, I can assure you, we will!!!
We found this home to be ideal for our family. We enjoyed canoeing on Hansen Doyle Lake and enjoyed the wildlife and the beautiful surroundings. The area was peaceful and relaxing. We made it to the Whitefish Huckleberry Festival and enjoyed a few trips to Glacier National Park. We enjoyed family meal times and conversations on the decks of the home. After a day of hiking relaxing in the hot tub really soothes those muscles. I highly recommend this property.
We just returned from a wonderful week and are so very relaxed. The home was very clean and comfortable. The setting was out of the way and beautiful. We enjoyed many things about our visit most especially the fishing which was great, and the wildlife viewing right from the balcony each day. Everything we needed was there, from a kitchen supplied with all the condiments and utensils for cooking up great meals to soap and shampoo in the two full baths. We highly recommend this get away!
Fantastic! 2016 was our second summer trip spent in this fabulous retreat. Our group spent every evening in the warm and clear lake just steps from the house. The house's location is so convenient for everything from walking around downtown Whitefish to backpacking the Jewel Basin. The house perfectly accommodated our group including 5 kids ranging from 3 to 14. We found the hosts welcoming, knowledgeable, and personable. We could not be happier with our trip!
We had such a great time! The house was perfect, all the wildlife you could imagine , The house had everything we needed, kitchen stuff to a canoe on the lake. the house is close , but not too close to town "Whitefish or Kalispell". We had four adults & two kids. The kids could not wait to get back to the house each night. Northern Pike in the lake, I was in heaven !. yes we enjoyed ourselves .
We had such a perfect trip! This home was perfectly situated: close to access points in Flathead National Forest (including fabulous Tally Lake), close to Whitefish, Kalispell, and Glacier, and most importantly right on the perfect family-friendly swimming hole and kayak spot. The home is well-appointed, conveniently laid-out, and very conducive to accommodating a group of varying ages. The yard is beautiful, the decks offer beautiful spots to soak up sunshine and bird watch, and the large hot tub was enjoyed by all! The owners were reasonable, friendly, and knowledgeable. We will be back!
Peaceful, quiet solitude. Bird and animal viewing. Hiking, mountain biking & cross country skiing right out the door. Swimming, canoing and fishing on the lake. Town of Whitefish is 15 minutes away with Restaurants, cinema, theater, etc. Whitefish Mountain Resort with downhill skiing is 30 minutes away. Glacier National Park is 45 minutes away.
