About this property

Fort Beatty ~ The former mountain home of Ned Beatty. Amazing views!!!

Fort Beatty is a very special getaway. The view of the mountains are truly spectacular. A large family of deer come through the property twice a day! There are many trails for hiking. Several groves of Giant Sequoias surround this area. The closest grove is located 1 mile away at Belknap Campground and the Trail of 100 Giants is only 40 minutes up Highway 190. Maps will be available for you to browse. Fort Beatty looks like a real fort. Built with local wood from pine, redwood and cedar. Views of the mountains are available from every window. Mountain quail, Acorn woodpeckers, Redtailed Hawks, Eagles, and many wild birds can be seen from the main floor window. The Tule River flows through nearby and trout are abundant seasonally. Waterfalls and wildflowers are gorgeous! Also fishing for trout in the spring and early summer. During the summer months swimming in the Tule River is so refreshing! In winter watch the snow falling outside the large picture window, while curled up in front of the fireplace. Sleds and toboggans are available for playing in the meadow. Year round the mountains will please the eye and nurture the soul. You have to see it to believe it! Pets are part of your family and we are happy to host them too! Just bring their essentials and be the responsible owners that you are! The breezeway entrance is gated at both the front and back.

Merry Mountain Holiday
Fort Beatty is so unique and is located in a gorgeous place. Everyone in our group loved staying there. Sandra is an excellent and responsive host. We would not have been able to stay there if our canine family wasn't welcome so we were especially grateful that they were!

Amazing property and accommodations!
Camp Nelson is a wonderful place to stay while escaping into the mountains. The views are astounding, the cabin itself is quaint, unique, and unmatched! Staying here is an experience in and of itself. Our family loved our time at camp Nelson and can’t wait to come back!

Serious Family Glamping
Everything about this cabin was beautiful we wish it was ours! We enjoyed our stay in the evenings and seeing the beautiful night sky in all of its glory. You could feel the love and attention to detail that was put into everything! The family of dear mentioned in listing were a fabulous morning treat for the kids to see! I was grateful for the floor fans because I didn’t anticipate how hot it would be, the only negative was how hot it was inside once we arrived and getting my littles to sleep in such warm temperatures, but as the night cooled so did the cabin and the next night it wasn’t as hot.

About the host

Hosted by Sandra Beatty

Host profile image
Fort Beatty was imagined and then designed by none other than the well known
actor, musician and singer, Ned Beatty. He discovered this wonderful getaway while working on a film.
He fell in love with the mountains and the people living in Camp Nelson and the surrounding area. Ned wanted to have a place to get away and rejuvenate during his busy career.
Fort Beatty was built by craftsmen that lived right there. The wood used was cedar, pine and even a bit of redwood grown on that same mountain. The saw mill used, was from further up the mountain at Alpine Village.
Ned enjoyed relaxing, hiking the trails, and visiting with friends and neighbors and playing his guitar and washtub base between movies and public appearances.
Ned passed away in 2021 but he is still looking over his beloved mountains around Camp Nelson.
Ned's wife Sandy is in Southern CA where they moved to be close to their children and grandchildren.
Itʼs a joy for them to share “The Fort” as it is known in Camp Nelson. Many of the people living on the mountain remember spending time with Ned, his wife and the family.
The Beatty family feel very blessed and would love to share this very special place in the Sequoias with you.

Why they chose this property

Camp Nelson is a small historical logging camp from the 1800's. The community is close knit and friendly. Ned and all of our family fell in love with this area. It is truly California's best kept secret!

What makes this property unique

Views, views, views! Secluded lodge-like dwelling with views on every floor! There are 3 levels! Walk to the small town of Camp Nelson and Pierpoint Springs Resort. You can smell the cedar trees and pines along the way!!

Located in the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument (not near the Sequoia National Park). Ideal hiking trails, mountain biking (bring your own), fishing, swimming, and more. Cross country skiing in the winter, snowmobiling available at Ponderosa (bring your own snowmobile), sledding available in Camp Nelson (sledding equipment available at the Fort) and at Ponderosa.
