About Chris Kennedy
I am a retired solicitor and my wife is a teacher. We have two sons in their thirties and we acquired the property when they were teenagers. After 16 years, we all still love the house and village
Chris Kennedy purchased this House in 2002
Why Chris Kennedy chose Roccastrada
We came for a holiday to Roccatederighi in 2002 and fell in love with its beauty and uniqueness. We had no intention of buying a place in Tuscany but we were enchanted by the place and the people. We decided to look around to see if we could find a place suitable for our family. Our one criteria when we were looking at properties was that the property should have adequate outside space, good views and also be within easy driving distance of the coast and hill-top towns. We were therefore thrilled to find Casa dell'Artista with so much outside space, two terraces and a garden. We were very fortunate to find this unique house. Although it was perfectly habitable and an artist and his family were living there, we totally renovated it. We have continued to improve the house over the years.
What makes this House unique
One of the unique qualities of Roccatederighi is that it is a genuine Tuscan village, full of charm and life. The people are wonderful, friendly, helpful and genuinely kind. The uniqueness of the house is, without doubt its location and the astounding views, which extend across the Maremma plains to the sea and the islands of Elba, Giglio and Corsica. It offers peace and tranquility and yet in less than 5 minutes you can be in the heart of the village with its bars and restaurants. The Medieval character of the house is also unique. It has a history but is modernised and comfortable.

A lovely, large home in a beautiful and very friendly village. Chris was a very efficient and helpful owner to deal with. Ricardo in the village was very helpful and very quickly resolved the small water supply issue that we had. A gorgeous and relaxing area of Italy to visit.
An excellent experience!
Our stay at Casa dell' Artista fulfilled all our expectations. We arrived to the scenery of a local medieval festival for which the ancient town was a perfect location. We had nice and cosy dinners on the terrace and made lovely trips to the beach, local wineries and restaurants. Furthermore, we were pleased with the friendly and helpful assistance from Riccardo who is the local housemanager in the town.
We can highly recommend the house and the place.
Perfect way to see Tuscany
The property and the village are absolutely perfect. The location is at about 2000 feet on the side of the mountain views of all the way to the ocean. The house itself is very well equipped clean excellent Wi-Fi and easily accommodate a family of 5 or 6. It is about a 400 yard walk on an old road to the property. The restaurants are actually excellent the grocery store the bakery and meat market are also excellent and the property is in close proximity to excellent beaches wineries castles, everything that one would want to experience Tuscany. We were very pleased with our stay and plan to come back. We recommend the property very highly.
Away from it all
Beautiful location, amazing views, good restaurants, quiet with just the church telling you the hours. Wonderful day trips nearby but also perfect just to unwind. Welcome to tourists but not overrun.
We absolutely loved our visit to Roccatederighi. Chris was extremely helpful throughout the process and was able to give us advice and even secure a chef and cooking classes for my family and I. The home was great, the people were lovely and the views were astounding.
I would highly recommend this home and village for anyone that wants to take in the Tuscan experience, relax, eat well and enjoy time away from it all.
Thank you for everything!
Kraig, Amy, Hadley and Kate Stabenow
Kraig and his family were really lovely guests - so enthusiastic about everything in Tuscany. I am so glad the Tuscan Cuisine Cookery Classes with our local Tuscan chef, Oli Haenline, worked out so well for you.
Hopefully, Kraig you will soon return and demonstrate your culinary skills for some of the locals!
Many thanks for being such a pleasant guest.
Last House on the Left
That is how I described our location for my face book friends, and future visitors. Since we stayed a total of two months, I am not sure all of our experiences will be helpful to the one or two week vacationer. First of all, the house was a revelation. It was hard to conceive of what a house was going to look like, perched at the end of a medieval village. It met our needs very nicely. The bedrooms were cozy, and the kitchen was large. It was equipped with a dishwasher, that saw quite a lot of use. The Internet (very important to me) was more than adequate, and reliable. Over the course of two months there were a couple of instances where items needing fixing. Fortunately the hardware store in Ribola was well stocked, and I was equal to the task. The view was inspiring, from every window, of every room. I wish I had paid more attention to the distances to landmarks (Florence, Sienna, Lucca, etc) from our house. That was my fault....not Chriss's. The people in the village were friendly, and the shops were good enough....the bakery was more that good enough! We had a great time, walking all over the countryside, and there is some walking involved. What a great experience!
The village is situated within wonderful walking & trekking country and there are numerous spectacular walks on the doorstep. The local bike shop rents out bikes and arranges a variety of tours, e.g. wine tasting, spa and history tours.
The beautiful Renaissance towns of Siena, Volterra, Montalcino and Massa Marittima are all within driving distance and the abbeys of Sant'Antimo and San Golgano, set in the stunning Tuscan countryside, are well worth a visit. There are also many charming churches, Medieval villages and natural spas in the immediate area.
A lovely swimming pool set in wonderful countryside is about a 15 mins drive. The sea is about a 38 mins drive, the nearest being the popular beach resort of Fallonica. Here you will find miles of golden sands.
The breathtaking Maremma National park is about 50 minutes by car and a variety of activities are provided, such as Natural History treks and Night tours searching for wildlife. There is also a wonderful unspoilt natural beach with a back drop of pine woods.
A lake, fed by a natural spring, is 30 minutes away and is perfect for swimming.
Rome is about 90 minutes away by inter city train. If you fancy a night or two in Venice, Rome, Pisa or Florence you can vary your arrival or departure point to combine a night or 2 in e.g. Rome - either before or after your stay.
Isle of Elba
This is reached by ferry from Piombino (one hours drive on the main autostrada towards Pisa). Follow directions to the ferry terminal, it is all well signposted. Once there it is possible to buy day tickets, either as a foot passenger or with car. Taking the car provides the opportunity to visit more of this beautiful island. The ferry journey is about one hour. Porto Azzuro is particularly attractive with a Mediterranean atmosphere.
Isle of Giglio
Boats run from Port Santo Stefano (about one hours drive) to this beautiful charming island which you can see in the distance from our terrace.
The natural hot springs at Petriola are an experience not to be missed.
The thermal springs at Saturnia, although further afield, are larger and a well known tourist attraction.
Bagno Vignolo (close to Pienza) consist of the original Roman baths.
Other Activities: wine tasting, wildlife, exploring old cities and antiquities or relaxing on the terrace taking in the magnificent panorama.
