Great family getaway!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed longer than a week, and I'm so glad we did! The kitchen was amazing, very well stocked. They literally thought of anything you might need. The view was truly breathtaking, and it was extremely peaceful and relaxing. Our children really enjoyed the board games that were there, and it was so nice to hear them interact! Phil was very thorough on his information, and if we had any questions he was always accessible.

Family Vacation

  • 4 of 5

We recently visited with our 5 year old triplets and a one year old. Our friends and I truly enjoyed the house. The kitchen is very well stocked. There is limited seating in the living room area but for the adults it was ok. Overall this was an amazing vacation. The boat is a great benefit and really could not imagine the trip without a boat. You MUST have four wheel drive to make it up and down the mountain without panic! After one time up and down you are all set!! There is limited parking. Bring bug spray as the chiggers are not pleasant. The owner is always available and does a good job providing information. The neighbors do not rent their cabin so there is no worry about noise and they are very pleasant. Great great trip and we will be back!

Great Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We booked a two week stay in the summer of 2013 and were so impressed we have booked to go back for another week in August 2015. The house is spotlessly clean and very well equipped and there can surely be no better sight and sound than sitting in the hot tub on an evening looking out over the lake as the sun goes down surrounded by mature forest.

The fact that the rental includes a boat and canoe is an added bonus and locating the rope swing on the edge of the lake was the highlight of the children's trip and one of the many reasons we are looking forward to going back.

Great base for exploring the waterfalls and backwoods walks. Only advice though, wear insect repellent as the chigger bites are a nuisance!

Can't wait to return !!

Great Family Times at the Iron Duckling!

  • 5 of 5

What a great week our family of 6 had. We have gone to N.C. with our 4 kids since they were young and know we were with 4 in their twenties. The home was fabulous, clean, every appliance and kitchen item you can think of. The views were beautiful and the whole area gorgeous. We had a 15 minute steep walk down to the lake. Natahala Lake is so rich and alluring. We so enjoyed the boat provided. I hope we can come back to enjoy this lovely home.

Good getaway for the stout of heart

  • 4 of 5

The Iron Duckling is a great cabin get away. Plenty of room for 6 people although 9 may feel cramped. The property is clean and very well appointed. Kitchen appliances and utensils are all high end. Phil is a friendly and courteous owner with whom I dealt to make arrangements. As the posting implies, the boat is a very special feature of the property. The lake is wonderful and you really need a boat to enjoy it.

However, you will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. We had a front wheel drive minivan and had difficulty getting to the property. Furthermore, the boat is quite the hike to and from the cabin. It's about a 15 minute hike down the mountain to the boat but, depending on your ability, it can be a strenuous 30+ minute hike back up. Older, very young, or impaired guests will have a great deal of difficulty.

The property is remarkably private and quiet. There is a cabin that could be considered 'next door' that could comprimise privacy when occupied but it does not appear to be a rental and was thankfully empty during our stay.

Although there are 3 bedrooms plus a loft with convertable sofas, one bedroom is smallish with a bed to match. I would think it would be suitable for a single adult in most cases. The loft could accommodate 3 kids if they get along very well. However, there is only common seating for a few people. The living room sits 4 people comfortably with chairs on the front porch that could seat 4 people in nice weather. If you bring a very full family, be prepared to compete for a comfy perch.

Although the number of flying insects is suspiciously low, there is no screened area oustide so the few mosquitos there are do manage to find you if you don't have some other defense (repellant, candles, etc.)

The property is rather remote. If boating isn't your thing (and you don't have a 4 wheel drive vehicle) your goal can only be solitude. I don't mean that to be a criticism. Getting away from it all can be difficult to accomplish. If you are looking to go shopping for local crafts, enjoying some cultural events, or evening taking in a movie to break up the stillness, be prepared to commute to and from the Iron Duckling.

That said, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the property with these things in mind.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review. Yes our beautiful home is perched above the lake...great view and 500 ft above the lake. So yes, if you walk down, you have to walk up. And some guests love the exercise. But most people drive down where there is very convenient parking next to the dock and drive back up. Our front deck is one of the pluses on the lake. Yes we have very few insects so netting is just not needed. As you can see in pictures, there are only four rocking chairs but there is a table for six right there to sit on. Plus probably several are going to be playing the corn toss game right in front of the deck. Please come again and enjoy our great getaway. Phil and Terri

Owner's Response: We are delighted that your family enjoyed our home. We were glad that you had bright sunny weather and hope that you choose to come again during the summer to enjoy more fully the lake, the boat, tubing, skiing and just being lazy in the calm water of our lagoon. See you soon.
