We stayed at Cumberland Cottage for a week from the 13th to the 20th July 2018. Once we arrived in Orton we found the cottage easily from the owners emailed directions and were pleased that it was in a peaceful location. When we arrived at the cottage and opened the door we were taken aback, it was even better in real life than in the photographs. A nice touch was the tea, milk and lemon drizzle cake to die for that greeted us after a tiring journey from Cornwall. The open plan downstairs was plenty spacious enough for the two of us, spotlessly clean and looked freshly decorated. The kitchen area had all the utensils and pots and pans that we needed when we stayed in and cooked main meals. Upstairs was just as spacious and clean with a very comfortable bed and sufficient storage space for our belongings. The toilet / wet room also brought no complaints from me. My wife, who is very particular about hygiene had absolutely no qualms about using it at all.
There was a comprehensive welcome pack explaining about the cottage, emergency doctor details etc, local pubs, several local walks and a bit about the history of the cottage. The owners, Gill and Adam, lived next door and were always very friendly when we saw them and more than happy to answer any queries about local places to go.
Although we did a small shop at a supermarket, the village itself had a relatively small shop that supplied all our needs for food and drink that we needed. Just across the road was Kennedys Chocolate Shop and Coffee House which is well worth a visit. The local pub, The George Hotel, was friendly with good pub grub on offer. For more upmarket food there are several local pubs within a four to seven mile radius.
Although we managed a couple of Fell walks, a drive to Beatrix Potter's house and a trip on an Ullswater steamer, our week was just too short to do the area justice. We shall certainly be returning to the area and staying in Cumberland Cottage again, we really enjoyed it Thank you.
