About The Owner

My wife and I have been Baltimore residents all our lives, but we have always loved spending time in the more serene parts of Maryland's Eastern Shore. Now that our children are grown and living nearby, we wanted to find a vacation home within easy driving distance that we could use as a family gathering place.

Why The Owner chose Royal Oak

Situated on Oak Creek in Royal Oak, Maryland, the River House is located between the historic towns of Easton and St. Michaels. Although it was a true 'fixer-upper,' our cottage offered just what we were looking for--a peaceful getaway spot with lots of room, plenty of activities closeby, and opportunity for kayaking, biking, strolling, or just 'chilling.'

What makes this cottage unique

While we have our favorite restaurants in Easton, St. Michaels, and Oxford, we enjoy dining in and watching the constant parade of waterfowl on Oak Creek. At the River House, with its spectacular water views, we feel insulated from the stress of our everyday lives, yet we can be as active or inactive as we want--we're never bored or at a loss for a fun or peaceful way to spend our time.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A wonderful cottage easily accessed from DC or Baltimore. Right on the river, the River House is beautifully decorated, cosy and easily sleeps 6. It's very close to St. Michaels and Easton. We had a fantastic weekend there and just wish we could have stayed longer!

Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

This rental was everything promised and more. Beautiful, quiet, elegant, comfortable ... a wonderful place for relaxing. The home invites both private and shared time for quiet conversation, leisurely meals, and wonderful indoor/outdoor living. Believe the pictures ... the views of the water are breathtaking. The home was immaculate and beautifully appointed. Exceptional!

St. Michaels is close by for good restaurants and wandering through interesting shops. Town Dock is a great choice for lunch or dinner. Bring your kayaks, or rent them ... the coves along the creek provide a great chance for seeing the area.

I loved it and hope to return!

A lovely spot on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, nicely decorated with a dock to crab from!

We enjoyed our stay at River House. We felt it looked like it had not been cleaned lately. The shower needed fixing, and trimming the poison ivy near the pier needed eradicating. Despite those issues, we had a good time, catching and eating crabs!

Owner's Response: As we do not live near the property, it is not always possible to know about problems until they are reported by our guests. However, we ALWAYS respond immediately to resolve. The shower has been fixed and the poison ivy has been cut back and sprayed. We also reviewed procedures with our housekeeper. These measures were taken IMMEDIATELY after hearing from the guest.

Pretty location but the home needs cleaning and the heater needs repair.

  • 2 of 5

The house was very pretty although the heater was not working on the first floor. The home was not clean. My vacation was not good. My time was spent trying to keep the home warm. Disappointing and costly.

Owner's Response: We responded to the guest complaint about no heat on the 1st floor by having an HVAC contractor out to the house the very next day. Regarding cleanliness, the house is closed for the winter, but when re-open in March it will be under new management.

Map

The River House is more than an ordinary vacation home. It's charming on the outside and cozy inside with all modern amenities, and a very Provencal flavor. There is a private pier, perfect for catching crabs, launching a boat, watching herons and other birds, or just relaxing. We can arrange kayak and bike rentals for guests. Inside the cottage, it's bright and light with unobstructed views, cozy fireplace, lovely all year round, and warmed by sun throughout the year. Convenient to both Easton and St Michaels with shops, antiques, cafes and elegant restaurants...you won't run out of things to do. Guests who visit the River House often want to visit our restored Village House in the heart of Provence, France. It's located in Grambois, a medieval perched village not far from Aix en Provence.
