About The Owner

My wife and I have been Baltimore residents all our lives, but we have always loved spending time in the more serene parts of Maryland's Eastern Shore. Now that our children are grown and living nearby, we wanted to find a vacation home within easy driving distance that we could use as a family gathering place.

Nancy and Larry

Baltimore, MD

Why The Owner chose Eastern Shore

Situated on Oak Creek in Royal Oak, Maryland, the River House is located between the historic towns of Easton and St. Michaels. Although it was a true 'fixer-upper,' our cottage offered just what we were looking for--a peaceful getaway spot with lots of room, plenty of activities closeby, and opportunity for kayaking, biking, strolling, or just 'chilling.'

What makes this cottage unique

While we have our favorite restaurants in Easton, St. Michaels, and Oxford, we enjoy dining in and watching the constant parade of waterfowl on Oak Creek. At the River House, with its spectacular water views, we feel insulated from the stress of our everyday lives, yet we can be as active or inactive as we want--we're never bored or at a loss for a fun or peaceful way to spend our time.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A wonderful cottage easily accessed from DC or Baltimore. Right on the river, the River House is beautifully decorated, cosy and easily sleeps 6. It's very close to St. Michaels and Easton. We had a fantastic weekend there and just wish we could have stayed longer!

Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

This rental was everything promised and more. Beautiful, quiet, elegant, comfortable ... a wonderful place for relaxing. The home invites both private and shared time for quiet conversation, leisurely meals, and wonderful indoor/outdoor living. Believe the pictures ... the views of the water are breathtaking. The home was immaculate and beautifully appointed. Exceptional!

St. Michaels is close by for good restaurants and wandering through interesting shops. Town Dock is a great choice for lunch or dinner. Bring your kayaks, or rent them ... the coves along the creek provide a great chance for seeing the area.

I loved it and hope to return!

Great Fall Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful family weekend at this house. the downstairs is open, very light and has multiple vistas of the water. The three upstairs bedrooms are close to one another and share a bathroom. It was fine for us because we were all family. The setting and open space around the house was great for just getting outside and the location perfect, just outside of St. Michaels.

Setting is nice, but the house is lacking.

  • 3 of 5

The location and setting of this house are lovely. It is also very convenient to both St. Michaels and Easton. We love this area. We were disappointed that the house was, frankly, dirty. I have no doubt that we left the house significantly cleaner than we found it. There is also a dank smell to the house. It took us several washings upon returning home to get rid of the smell. We stayed in the house with our dog. The house rules clearly state that the renter's dog must be on leash at all times. Unfortunately, we had to deal with off leash dogs from at least three neighbors. A nuisance and very disconcerting when encountering a strange dog in the dark. We have rented quite a few other homes in this price range, and as an overall experience, this one does not compare well.

Great place to stay

  • 4 of 5

we rented this VRBO rental for a week worth of biking and paddle boarding in St Michaels, Oxford and Easton. Great location in between all 3 with awesome view o water. Not meant for really more than 4 people but was a quaint and kind of rustic getaway. Close to town while being able to enjoy the solitude.

We had initial cleaning issues when we arrived BUT the owner made resources quickly available to remedy these expeditiously without disturbing us. Some of the amenities were outdated but we were able to make due as such.

We would rent again.

Great view - Tired house - Disappointed

  • 2 of 5

The views are as advertised but the house is VERY tired and as frequent VRBO customers (and owners of rental properties ourselves), we were quite disappointed. Here is what you need to know.

1. The master bedroom has a huge window looking out at the lovely view. However, there is no window covering whatsoever - no blinds, curtains etc. Thus, at approximately 5:45 each morning the room is flooded with light. Not conducive to a nice sleep in on holiday. Also, the Master bed and bedding is old - flat aged pillows, mismatched sheets. No luxury here whatsoever. The bathroom is integrated into the Master bedroom - it is not a separate area. When I gave up trying to sleep in the Master and tried to use the twin bed room, there were no top sheets on the beds, which I would describe more as cots. Did not get a good night 's sleep any night we were there.

2. Not that we went there to watch TV but there was a major sporting event we wanted to check on over the weekend and there was no sound on local channels at all on the downstairs TV. Both TVs in the house were about 15 inches - much smaller than the screen I am typing on now. And, the music system was a cassette player. Seems the electronics in this house have not been updated in the last 20 years!

3. We found the garage full of about 8 bags of other people's garbage. The shower in the Master was moldy and appeared not to ever have been cleaned. The downstairs shower leaked all over the bathroom floor. There was no complete set of anything for cooking. Lots of odds and ends, but nothing new and updated (how about a knife set or measuring spoons?)

4. Appreciated being able to bring our pet, but according to the house rules, he had to be on leash at all times. No fun having such a nice big yard if you can't play with your dog in it. Be careful about those pet restrictions...

So in sum, the house is in a very nice location with a great view, but for the price, not what we expected. Would not stay here again.

Owner's Response: 1. In eight years of vacation rentals (between 300-400 parties of 1-6 guests), no one has ever complained about lack of shades at master bedroom windows. Privacy from neighbors is not an issue. We have chosen to leave the windows uncovered specifically for the views and many guests comment how much they appreciate it. However, we are now installing shades in order to give future guests the option. The twin trundle beds were not made up because guest did not indicate they would need that room. 2. Regarding lack of sound on certain channels, I immediately reported to cable company and instructed guest to call cable directly, as someone had to be at the house to correct problem. No complaints about this before or since. This guest also wins award for being first to ever complain about size of tv's. 3. Our private trash hauler was tardy in picking up trash. He came out as soon as I called him. Shower leak was a surprise problem. I had it fixed within a day. No complaints about kitchen supplies. From time to time, guests will make suggestions or housekeeper will inform of broken or missing items and we always respond immediately. 4. The county requires us to have pets contained so as not to disturb neighbors. We have enjoyed very successful rental seasons over the past eight years and have received glowing emails, unsolicited, from many of our guests (including the guest immediately following the person who wrote this review, who has stayed at the River House for the past 5 years).

Map

The River House is more than an ordinary vacation home. It's charming on the outside and cozy inside with all modern amenities, and a very Provencal flavor. There is a private pier, perfect for catching crabs, launching a boat, watching herons and other birds, or just relaxing. We can arrange kayak and bike rentals for guests. Inside the cottage, it's bright and light with unobstructed views, cozy fireplace, lovely all year round, and warmed by sun throughout the year. Convenient to both Easton and St Michaels with shops, antiques, cafes and elegant restaurants...you won't run out of things to do. Guests who visit the River House often want to visit our restored Village House in the heart of Provence, France. It's located in Grambois, a medieval perched village not far from Aix en Provence.
