Le Tilleul is a spacious Charentais farmhouse delightfully set in a small hamlet in south west France, near Chalais and Aubeterre sur Dronne, on the border of the Dordogne/Charente (the 2nd sunniest department of France).

Comfortable, modernised and furnished to a high standard, this self catering house sleeps 8 plus a baby, in 4, large attractive bedrooms.
A sofa bed in the living room, and comfortable portable beds for children provided additional options.

Le Tilleul evenings could include a garden barbecue, or visits to local concerts, night markets, bars restaurants. As it grows dark, sit outdoors to appreciate bright starlight in this dark skies region.

Our impressive, private swimming pool, 12 x 6m has Roman steps and a deep end. Its large terrace offers space for loungers, tables, ice coolers, parasols and reclining chairs. The pretty landscaped garden provides a range of dining areas in sun and shade, washing line, fruit trees, herb garden, terraces, plus a beautiful wild flower meadow, and wonderful open views over rolling countryside to distant farms.

Inside, an impressive double-height living room is arranged into 4 areas for reading/games, dining, relaxing overlooking the garden and watching TV. The tastefully furnished ground floor bedroom opens directly into the garden. It contains a five foot double oak bed and matching furniture, with ensuite private shower room containing a loo and basin.

The three generous upstairs bedrooms are individually styled with views over the garden and/or pool to the rolling countryside beyond. All are newly decorated and furnished. Each sleeps 2 in a combination of double, and king-size/twin options. Additional 3 foot single beds are available for a child ren wishing to share a room with others.

Lovely property other than the hot water system not working in the evenings throughout the stay

When I politely suggested to the owner that a reasonable refund was due because the failing hot water system was not working properly I received an offensive reply. This was full of false accusations regarding the state the house was left ( we left it in an entirely reasonable state). This included a statement that we had urinated in the shower ! We were a family party of three professional adult couples. Furthermore money was docked from our deposit for extra cleaning. Quite extraordinary behaviour, and I have received no reply to my letter to them complaining of the way they treated us. By the way, I wrote to Homeaway at least a week ago about this situation and have heard nothing from them either. All rather disappointing.

Fantastic Holiday At Le Tilleul

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful house. Our one-year-old daughter absolutely loved running around the huge garden and splashing about in the enormous pool (a welcome change from our small, London flat). The house is set in charming countryside, and there are several walking routes that take you through fields (full of sunflowers in summer) and woods, which really enabled us to make the most of the superb location. Chalais and Aubeterre, which both have plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants, are both a short drive away. Chalais also has a railway station from where you can easily get to Bordeaux or Angouleme in about an hour. The house itself was very well appointed, extremely comfortable, and has clearly been decorated with real care and attention - it feels like a home from home. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have already booked to go back this October! We would recommend it to anyone.

A Gem in the Charente. Calm, comfortable spacious.

All was just as the owners described while they added still more quality and detail. Their local reps. were just as friendly and helpful, looking after the pool and helping to source anything needed, as well as suggesting the best shops and restaurants. Rooms are big and full of character, with massive storage, and the kitchen and lounge are exceptional. TV, telephone and WI. Fi. all work well. I enjoyed walking through the farmlands with their sunflowers, and varied bird life, plus further on, vines, whilst the restaurants in Chalais were good and friendly, using English whenever I needed it. There are more places to visit than I can mention, though I especially enjoyed Cognac - a lively town with excellent public gardens, museums and walks, or boats on the river Charente. I strongly recommend Le Tilleul and its area for all their varied delights, including the occasional call of a distant donkey. I shall come again.
