Historic Fishing Cabin on the Trinity River: Wood Stove, Antiques, Dog-Friendly

Bedrooms 1
Space 950 sq. ft.
Property type cabin

About the property

Perfect cabin for 2-3 guests. Ideal for fishers. 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath. Laundry.

This is a very comfortable and nicely appointed historic cabin with a cool river-facing covered patio. We have special rates for 3 or more nights and stays close to the current date. Contact us, Heidi & Steph, by either clicking on the right for our phone number or sending us an email (that link's on the right as well) and we'll send a special offer through VRBO. We also offer a dandy extended stay rate for traveling medical professionals and others who need a home away from home.

Our response rate is usually within one to two hours, but VRBO rates us by how soon we respond to their automatically generated emails. If potential guests send a VRBO request and contact us directly, we deal with the auto emails in a more casual manner.

The Carriage House has a rich cedar interior, rustic log bed and grand wildlife tapestry and leather couch and love seat. In summer, it holds its cool temperature well and has a swamp cooler to keep you comfortable. In winter, the wood stove is charming and very efficient, and there are traditional if less romantic heating options as well. The cabin was the original carriage house from the Vitzthum homestead before being converted into a cabin. It sits right on the river and has productive steelhead riffles in wading distance from your door.

Not all vacation rentals are alike. Our cabins are owned and maintained by us. If you need us, we are here for you. This is worth considering, because nothing is worse than having a problem and calling a long-distance property owner. We know, because it happens up here all the time.

The Carriage House has one bedroom and one bathroom and comfortably sleeps three in beds (2 in bedroom's queen log bed and 1 in captain's bed in living room). A fourth can sleep on the couch for an additional charge.

We have multiple night discounts; please email or call for a quote on stays of 3 or more nights. This is a really comfortable, rustic cabin that looks out on the Trinity River from a dandy covered porch complete with a second dining set and lounge chairs.

Inside, along with the bedroom with a queen log bed, you'll find a full bath and a full kitchen. Wood is provided for the wood stove, plus there is gas and electric heat. The cedar-paneled living room has a stunning wildlife tapestry and leather full-sized couch and loveseat set and a twin-sized captain's bed. The Carriage House is all one level; perfect for strollers and wheelchairs.

Watch TV on the couch and loveseat, or from the dining table. Use the well-lighted antique secretary to tie flies or cruise the internet. The vast lawn between you and the river is perfect for playing ball with the kids, dogs or both.

The large, deep, covered back porch looks out on the Trinity River, which is accessed at the edge of the lawn (2 steps down from cabin to porch). It has a glass and wicker dining set for 4 plus many other seating options. It's delightful for playing cards, reading, or just watching the river go by. There is a docking station to play your music from an ipod, MP3 or phone.

There is a large parking lot at the entrance to our property. Guests can arrive, unload their vehicles, and leave them in the lot, which is also perfect for drift boats and rafts.

The Carriage House is one of our three great cabins on 1.15 private acres off Steel Bridge Road near Douglas City. Cabins range from the romantic Miner's Cabin, which is one of the closest cabins to the water on the entire river, to 'Alpen Glow,' a grand 3BR/2BA A frame with a fabulous deck, incredible kitchen, large dining table, and lots of sleeping options (one of the most spectacular views EVER from the River Loft).

Rates drop with stays of 3 or more nights. We will consider one-night stays, but the busier we are, the tougher it is to accommodate them. Shoulder seasons are easier (spring and fall). Each cabin has its own feel and plenty of privacy, plus you can rent all of the cabins for a wedding, reunion or company gathering.

There can be great fishing from your bank. Fish the salmon hole; wade downstream to the steelhead riffles. The deep front porch is excellent for fishing gear and waders.

Michael Caranci, FFF Certified Master Instructor with The Fly Shop in Redding, CA says:

'As a long time Trinity River angler and guide, and the Director of Outfitters for The Fly Shop in Redding, I've had the opportunity over the years to visit many of the different motels, lodges, and cabins along the Trinity River. For sheer seclusion, access, and cozy, comfortable accommodations, the cabins at the Trinity River Adventure Inn are certainly among the best.'

About Heidi & Steph

Steph Dutton is a world-renowned kayaker who paddled from Canada to Mexico, then paddled the Oregon coast again, in the winter. He also circumnavigated California's Channel Islands, often enduring thirty foot seas.

Heidi Tiura owned and operated several businesses before running away to sea and working on tug boats in Alaska, Washington and Oregon.

Steph and Heidi are both Coast Guard licensed masters (captains), and creators of Sanctuary Cruises on the Monterey Bay. They have been featured in numerous books and documentaries for their work with whales (including National Geographic's 'Whale Attack,' which was based on their Mother's Day 2004 whale watching cruise).

Now, they live on the upper Trinity River and their kayak adventures are of a tamer sort. When not rafting or kayaking with their dogs and guests, they can usually be found on their motorcycles, because Trinity County has some of the best roads in the world for riding bikes.

And if not riding their bikes, they're up at their Dunsmuir place, Alpine Ski & Fish Haus. For them, Dunsmuir is the Big City.

Heidi & Steph purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Heidi & Steph chose Douglas City

Trinity County has the unbeatable combination of great natural beauty, incredible recreation opportunities, and it hasn't been overrun by tourists. People who have come here for twenty years remark at how little has changed. It is a spectacular place to explore.

What makes this cabin unique

Being on the river has to be one of the most relaxing things there is up here. Whether you fish, paddle, want to try the rope swing into the swimming hole, or just sit and watch the fish swim by, it is a wonderful escape to have a cabin right on the water.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Had a great time, everything was super!! You're right, the salmon in the picture I sent you was bright silver- absolutely delicious on the BBQ last night! Had a wonderful time, you have a very special piece of property. Take care, Wayne

[Wayne and the rest of the family's guys have a fishing retreat here every year. This year, the took both Alpen Glow and the Carriage House.]

The carriage house is as described which is a major plus. Everything was laid back and comfortable. River access is a major plus for us, including our dog Maggie Spaniel. We would stay again. Our hosts were very helpful and responded quickly to some technical issue with the internet. The location works well for touring the area and is close enough to Weaverville if you need your civilization fix.

Away from it all

  • 3 of 5

As the description says you do hear noise from the 299, but apart from that you really could be in the middle of no-where. A lovely setting. And we especially enjoyed sitting on the swing chair and watching the stars come out, and watching the quail. Beautiful butterflies and a deer also visited, House itself is homely rather than luxurious. Adequately provisioned for our family of three. Washing machine and tumble drier were an added bonus during our road trip around Northern California. This was the only place where we stayed that made it easy to recycle - something that we are used to doing at home, so it was no hardship. Lunch in Mamma LLamas a definite recommendation, and the Weaverville Museum is worth a visit - my favourite item, the billiard balls from the 1800s dug up from a well! And you can touch a dinosaur egg.

Owner's Response: Loved the comments about the cabin and area, but the "homely" house dates back to the mid-1800s and was actually the carriage house for one of Trinity county's first homesteads and turned into a cabin sometime later. Maybe you meant "homey"? At any rate, we are glad you had a good stay and enjoyed the area. Thrilled you recycled; it is depressing how few people do or care about it.

Beautiful vista, lovely yard and patio, great cabin

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Carriage House cabin, it had everything we needed for a relaxing place to get away from the city. It was great to have the kitchen set up with all the basic needs to create great meals. The yard was lush and green, great patio with a table where we ate most of our meals. The view of the trees, hills, and the river was great. Just a walk down the path and we were able to cast our fishing lines into the river. Enjoyed watching the deer in the morning and evening who came to eat from the apple tree. We loved the bird song in the morning and watched the bald eagles fly over the river. Heidi and Steph were wonderful and gave us great tips on kayaking at Lewiston Lake and other places to visit.

Owner's Response: We also thought highly of Linda and Chris! It is so nice when guests announce they just want to tune out and are enjoying taking it easy, but of course, that encouraged us to send them to the lake to kayak! We'd love to host them again.

Fall Splendor!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from 4 wonderful nights at the Carriage House and Miners Cabin. Both equally wonderful.

The miners cabin is rustic but so comfortable with everything you could ask for. So nice to have a iPod player that fills the space with your personal tunes as well as providing headlamps for the nighttime frog explorer. As a builder, my husband loved all of the excellent craftsmanship that went into the cabin. For me, the windows upstairs in the loft (comfy queen bed) that looked directly into the evening sky and stars rocked my world!

The location of both properties are fantastic. Directly on the river where some guests were catching Steelhead right outside the cabin and watching the Salmon spawn.

Carriage house was bigger with more amenities. Yep, also nice. Many places to relax and just watch the river go by.

Never worry if you've forgotten something as Weaverville has all the amenities you could need. We needed a water filtration system so we wouldn't die of dehydration up on the trails and there was an outdoor store just waiting for us to stop by.

We specifically stayed here for access for the beautiful Trinity Alps. We hiked all three days ( included) topping out at 17 miles on the Canyon Creek trail. A definite 10 in every way and worth the effort every step of the way.

Don't miss stopping in at Diggins, the local watering hole. It is a true Weaverville experience. And do say hi to Sue!

Many thanks to the owners, Heidi and Steph, for providing such a wonderful experience for such a reasonable price. We will definitely be recommending ALL of their riverfront properties to our friends and family.

Owner's Response: We love hearing guests enjoyed their stay and that our cabins met their desires. Time off is important and guests really getting a chance to enjoy themselves is huge for us, so we're thumbs up on this review and hope to see Sarah and company again.

Such a pleasant experience

  • 5 of 5

We had to make last minute reservations, and then needed to stay a number of days beyond our original dates. Steph and Heidi were so friendly and accommodating. I felt as though we were dealing with old friends. The cabin was awesome, right on the river. The kitchen was well appointed and the beds were comfy. Everything was clean and quiet. Doggies were welcome. We plan on staying again in the near future.

Owner's Response: We sure felt for these guests. They came on business and each day, their departure was postponed, but luckily this is our quiet season, and we could accommodate them. Very pleasant folks and we'd love to have them back!
