About this property
LARGE HISTORIC HOME ON LAKE ERIE! MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND OPEN!
Rock of Ages has been sitting on the shores of Lake Erie since 1861. It is built of native, local limestone, and is listed on the National Historic Register. There simply is not another comparable home on Lake Erie. It is wonderfully unique and fun to explore. It is very solid (like a 'Rock') and in great shape, but we have renovated the first floor, creating a Great Room and state of the art kitchen with everything needed to cook for and dine 30+ guests. We accept bookings year round. We require a 3 night minimum Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Rock of Ages overlooks the Lake Erie islands and is in the quaint village of Marblehead and is only a hop, skip, and a jump from the east gate of Lakeside (The Chautauqua of Lake Erie) in one direction and the historic Marblehead lighthouse in the other. The lighthouse is a spot of natural beauty and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
We have traveled around the world and this is our favorite place on earth! Friendly, down-home people, great entertainment (at Lakeside and the islands), wonderful local history, great boating and fishing, Cedar Point, and the waves and the winds of Lake Erie, are constantly there. What a place! From Rock of Ages's tower room is one of the best views of Lake Erie in the area. Come and see!
Rock of Ages has a 120-foot spacious lakefront patio and three other patios with plenty of furniture for sunbathing, eating and gazing at the lake and watching the boats and ferry to Kelley's island. Of course, you can swim off the flat glacial rocks right in front of the house. A large sandy beach is a short drive away. We still have the original limestone fossil walkways from when 'The Rock' was first built. There is a large hot tub overlooking the lake.
We have plenty of room for the whole family (8000 sq. ft.) and lots of bed and bath options. There is a first-floor suite with a king bed and its' own bath for those who do not do stairs. On the second floor each of the five bedrooms has a king-size bed and a private bath. The third floor is great for kids. Six bedrooms surround a large common area with a large-screen TV.
There is one king bed, one queen bed, 5 full-size beds, 3 twins and 4 rollaways up there. The third floor bedrooms share a full size bath and two half baths. You have already heard about the view from the tower room! It has a kingsize bed, its' own bath, and a roof-top patio. Folks will fight over who gets to sleep there!
On the first floor as well as the kitchen and dining/great room, there is a living room with TV. The first floor also has two half baths. The lower level - not really a basement (it was the old summer kitchen) is a large game room area with a pool table, ping pong table, TV, half bath, and tables and chairs. There is a backyard patio with two large grills. Rock of Ages has a large parking area to accommodate big groups.
Although it is wonderful in the summer with the windows open and the lake breezes, we do have air conditioning. Rock of Ages can be used year round and the lake in all its glory in the winter with ice and snow is something else!! It is a great place for business or church groups or special interest retreats and seminars, for example birders or artists.
Our rates are for the entire property, not per person as in an inn or bed and breakfast. NOV- APRIL (With the exception of the holidays). This was a great spot for a large family reunion. While there were a few things that weren’t working, I think that has to be expected in such a large old house. We loved it and will return if we can figure out how to have more bedrooms nearby.
Absolutely perfect for our family reunion. The house itself was spacious, comfortable, and had incredible views of the lake. It had all the amenities we could have wanted, which made it easy to focus on spending quality time together. The location was ideal, offering a peaceful setting while still being close to local attractions. Our extended family had an amazing time and we highly recommend it for any large group looking to make unforgettable memories!
We really enjoyed our stay at the rock of ages and had a tremendous time! Would recommend to anyone who wanted to stay up by Lake Erie with a large group of people.
Wonderful old home modernized comfortably to handle a crowd. Lots of room for small children to play, teenagers and adults to play pool, and space to gather for meals and talk. Beds were comfortable, Kitchen more than adequate for crowd cooking, and the house itself interesting to explore. Beautiful location and charming community nearby. Perfect for our reunion of 17.
This is the best venue you will find. Great kitchen bedrrooms and baths. We had 21 people and appreciated so many bedrooms with their own bath. The views were incredible of Lake Erie. So relaxing. The place is built for fun and a fabulous time was had by all. Round Robin ping ping, hot tub, crazy games, Kelleys Island trip. Used grills for a nice cookout. I didnt want to leave!
We had a group that ranged in age from 3 months to 92 years old. The house had everything we needed for our large group! We celebrated the matriarch of the family’s 90th birthday all week. We took lots of walks and did a lot of island hopping. This house was conveniently located to everything. Very fun week!!
Once again Rock of Ages fulfilled all of our needs. Plenty of rooms for our whole family and absolutely everything we needed for a fabulous time. Marla is a fantastic host!
The size of common bathrooms are small. There are some nude pictures on the property. If you have kids, I suggest you to cover them. Back yard is beautiful. Kitchen is big and has enaough tools, pans, plates etc.

I would like to give a short explanation about the "nude pictures" the above fellow commented on. We have 3 photos on Lake Erie of a piece of sculpture we own. It is a very tasteful sculpture done by a famous New Zealand artist. In the 23 years we have rented Rock of Ages, NO ONE has said a word about these photos either to me personally or in any review anywhere. About 2/3 of the groups renting Rock of Ages are families with children. They are very tasteful.
We have 8 full baths and five half baths at Rock of Ages. Three of the half baths are small--but, they are "half" baths. All bathrooms have been added on to our historic 164 year old family vacation home. Rock of Ages is not a hotel, inn, or bed and breakfast. It is our pleasure to share it with families and groups needing a larger family home for reunions, retreats, and vacations right on Lake Erie! Marla Rickloff owner
Everything was as described. Very clean. Wonderful kitchen. Plenty of bedrooms. Gorgeous views. Thank Heavens for air conditioning that week! All were comfortable. The older children enjoyed the 3rd floor living room. It was an amazing home for a family gathering!
Great house on the lake with everything you need for a weekend with family. The lake is right behind the house so it gives amazing views as you watch the ferry go back and forth. Great sunsets and sunrises. The kitchen is stocks with pots and pans.
Our book group loved Rock of Ages! Beds we’re comfortable and the waves were so relaxing! Much needed weekend away! We can’t wait to come back! Only downside is that we came during big season so they got into the house, but we didn’t notice them much.
Rock of Ages was a great venue for our family reunion of 20 plus folks. Marla was a fantastic communicator and made everything easy. House was well stocked with every kitchen utensil we needed for large group cooking and the vistas on to Lake Erie were amazing. Marblehead is a great little vacation town. Highly recommend.
We had the most wonderful time celebrating my birthday with a group of about 20 friends and family! From the view of the lake, extra touches around the house, the overall layout and ample parking, we could not have asked for a better weekend trip with our group! Thanks so much to Marla for all of the communication and making sure things went smoothly!

It is an absolute privilege for me to own Rock of Ages and to share it with guests! I love the local history of this area, and The Rock is an integral part of the history of the quarry in Marblehead and the founding of Lakeside --The Chautauqua on Lake Erie
