Rock of Ages has been sitting on the shores of Lake Erie since 1861. It is built of native, local limestone, and is listed on the National Historic Register. There simply is not another comparable home on Lake Erie. It is wonderfully unique and fun to explore. It is very solid (like a 'Rock') and in great shape, but we have renovated the first floor, creating a new Great Room and state of the art kitchen with everything needed to cook for and dine 30+ guests.
Rock of Ages overlooks the Lake Erie islands and is in the quaint village of Marblehead and is only a hop, skip, and a jump from the east gate of Lakeside (The Chautauqua of Lake Erie) in one direction and the historic Marblehead lighthouse in the other. The lighthouse is a spot of natural beauty and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
We have traveled around the world and this is our favorite place on earth! Friendly, down-home people, great entertainment (at Lakeside and the islands), wonderful local history, great boating and fishing, Cedar Point, and the waves and the winds of Lake Erie, are constantly there. What a place! From Rock of Ages'tower room is one of the best views of Lake Erie in the area. Come and see!
Rock of Ages has a 120-foot spacious lakefront patio and three other patios with plenty of furniture for sunbathing, eating and gazing at the lake and watching the boats and ferry to Kelley's island. Of course, you can swim off the flat glacial rocks right in front of the house. A large sandy beach is a short drive away. We still have the original limestone fossil walkways from when 'The Rock' was first built. There is a large hot tub overlooking the lake.
We have plenty of room for the whole family (7000+sq.ft.) and lots of bed and bath options. There is a first-floor suite with a king bed and its' own bath for those who do not do stairs. On the second floor each of the five bedrooms has a king-size bed and a private bath. The third floor is great for kids. Six bedrooms surround a large common area with a large-screen TV.
There is one king bed, one queen bed, 5 full-size beds, 3 twins and 4 rollaways up there. The third floor bedrooms share a fullsize bath and two half baths. You have already heard about the view from the tower room! It has a kingsize bed, its' own bath, and a roof-top patio. Folks will fight over who gets to sleep there!
On the first floor as well as the kitchen and dining/great room, there is a living room with TV and computer with internet access. The first floor also has two half baths. The lower level - not really a basement (it was the old summer kitchen) is a large game room area with a pool table, pingpong table, TV, half bath, and tables and chairs. There is a backyard patio with two large grills. Rock of Ages has a large parking area to accommodate big groups.
Although it is wonderful in the summer with the windows open and the lake breezes, we do have air conditioning. Rock of Ages can be used year round and the lake in all its glory in the winter with ice and snow is something else!! It is a great place for business or church groups or special interest retreats and seminars, for example birders or artists.
Our rates are for the entire property, not per person as in an inn or bed and breakfast. Our kitchen can easily handle the needs of a catered event or a weekend getaway. We can put you in touch with a couple of local catering companies just around the corner from Rock of Ages who have catered a number of groups staying at Rock of Ages. They can cook for you all week,or just do a special meal indoors or outdoors.

About Marla Rickloff
It is an absolute privilege for me to own Rock of Ages and to share it with guests! I love the local history of this area, and The Rock is an integral part of the history of the quarry in Marblehead and the founding of Lakeside --The Chautauqua on Lake Erie
Marla Rickloff purchased this House in 2002
Why Marla Rickloff chose Marblehead
We have had a cottage at Lakeside for a number of years and we love this area of Lake Erie! The views are amazing, and it is very relaxing to spend time here.

Rock of Ages was a spectacular experience in every way. The house was immaculately clean and very well equipped. There are eight king-sized beds so there is no squabbling over who gets the big bed. There was plenty of space within the house for babies to sleep quietly on higher floors and the young folks to whoop it up on lower levels. The kitchen was equipped with two ovens, two refrigerators, two dish washers and excellent quality cookware. The owners were very responsive to our questions, promptly mailed back our deposit fees and even mailed forgotten items quickly. I wholeheartedly recommend "the Rock".
We absolutely loved this home! There were 32 of us staying, all family, and we all had enough space! The entire house was immaculate - not even a spider web anywhere. Marla told me the kitchen would have space for 32 people to sit and eat, and I admit I was skeptical, but it had plenty of room for all of us. The kitchen was also well supplied with anything and everything one might need in a kitchen. The three refrigerators were all maximized, but again plenty of room for all our food.
The beds were very comfortable and it was so handy to have laundry on the premises.
We, of course spent so much time sitting on the lawn chairs and watching the lake. It was so relaxing and enjoyable watching the boats come and go.
The town was not quite as up and coming as we had hoped, but no one can help that!
I would highly recommend staying here.
We spent a great week at Rock of Ages with our family of 31 - my mom, her 7 kids and significant others and her 18 grandchildren. We loved the location and made the most of the yard for volleyball, the lake for swimming, paddle boarding, jet skiing and boating and were able to walk to the Kelleys Island ferry, Marblehead light house and the local winery. The kitchen was well stocked for preparing meals for our large group. The rooms were comfortable and linens and towels plentiful. All in all it was a wonderful week and we are already booked to come back in 2019! Thanks!!!
Great for reunions
We had a three-generation family reunion with 28 people at Rock of Ages in late June. The location is beautiful, especially the great seating on the waterfront; the area is wonderful (we loved the Chatauqua at Lakeside, right next door). The kitchen is fantastic for cooking meals for 30+ people and the dining area is also great for big, group meals. I couldn't believe it, but we never ran out of dishes. There's a big difference in comfort between the bedrooms on the third floor (the former servants quarters?) and the rest of the house. Adult couples who were assigned to third-floor rooms complained (beds too small, not enough natural light, cramped space, only two showers for the whole floor), so I would recommend only putting children or teens up there. The 5 rooms on the second floor, the "suite" on the ground floor, and the tower room are all fabulous for couples. Also, we have two mobility-impaired seniors who had trouble getting into and out of the house via the steep old stairs in front and back, and only one of them was able to have a first-floor bedroom, as all the rest are upstairs. There were good grab bars in the bathrooms, though. Overall, the family loved it, and the people who were in the nicer rooms kept raving about how great the house was. The owners were super-friendly and responsive, taking care of a few maintenance issues we identified in the first couple of days. We would certainly go back.
Loved having your family at Rock of Ages! Our dear old 156 year old house does have it's quirks! The six bedrooms and the common room on the third floor are as the house was originally built. We have added one full bathroom and two half baths to the third floor. One of the third floor bedrooms has a king bed, the rest have queens, doubles or twins. All are normal modern sized beds with very comfortable mattresses. The other seven bedrooms in the house have king beds and private baths.
Rock of Ages is our vacation home and is not a hotel, inn, or bed and breakfast. It is not handicap accessible and we try and make that very clear to people if we know that is something they are looking for. It is a very unique historical property and we walk a fine line between keeping some of the original character while still making it comfortable and welcoming for our family and many guests.
Rock of Ages (the stone house) was absolutely perfect for our family reunion. With 14 siblings (& spouses) it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to find accommodation for all of us under one roof so this was a huge plus. Also, Marla had THE best stocked house we have ever rented...she thought of everything & had plenty of it! Everyone (even the picky ones) commented on the lovely linens and the super comfortable beds. Could not have been happier with our stay and would love to go back someday :)
Our church staff of 9 stayed at Rock of Ages Feb. 21-23. We had amazing weather for February and were able to enjoy the our door seating, walked to a nice cafe in town. Great location.
The rental home was stocked with EVERYTHING! I've never stayed at a rent home that kept up on the dishes, utensils, paper towel, trash bags, etc. this is a top notch place!
Almost every room as its own bathroom. The view was amazing! The owners and staff were very good to work with. I would highly recommend this place.
