Great Stay

The house was plenty of space for three kids and two adults. Yard was fantastic (hammock, fire pit, tire swing, large yard) and the kayaks were great.

Spring vacation

The treehouse is small but efficient. The beds are very comfortable, and the host responded to us immediately when we couldn't figure out the door combination and needed table salt!

Lovely Getaway!

This cabin was perfect for a short weekend getaway! It was clean, homey, and comfortable. We loved the fire pit in the yard and were pleasantly surprised by how good the shower was. The only negatives were that there weren’t filters for the coffee maker (we should’ve thought to bring our own, but they did provide kcups) and the internet didn’t really work. However, neither of those things put a damper on our trip.

Great weekend refresh

The treehouse was perfect for our family getaway. While we wish we had a little more time to enjoy the setting (weather wasn’t playing nice), the time we had was great. Family card games on the beautiful deck….saw the resident deer and fox. Cabin had everything we needed. Hosts were super friendly and helpful! 10/10 recommend.

Cute little place!

We loved our stay at the Jaybird Treehouse! It was well maintained, clean, and super cute. The shower was amazing, the beds were super comfortable, and our teenager and their friend loved the trap door and "bunker" under the rest of the treehouse. The ice cream maker was such a nice touch! A couple things that I feel I should note... 1) the walk down to the lake is fairly steep, and is a boardwalk rather than stairs. For us it was ok, but if we had my elderly mother with us, she would not have been able to make that trip. 2) The air conditioners in the bedrooms worked well, if not a little too loud, but the air conditioner in the main living area didn't cool the space off quite enough. On a humid, 90 degree day, this makes a big difference. Overall, we loved our time there and would recommend the treehouse to others!

Trip to Illinois

My family and I are trying to see all 50 states. This was a perfect way for us to mark off the state of Illinois. The treehouse was beautiful. There isn't very much hustle but if you enjoy outdoor adventures this is a great place to find it! After a day of hiking at Garden of the Gods and Ferne clyffe, biking at tunnel hill the lake was the perfect way to cool off and relax! The owners of the treehouse were very friendly and provided more than welcome could have ever asked for! Definitely will recommend this place to our friends and family and who knows after our trip around the map we may even return!

Welcoming Treehouse

We had a wonderful time at the treehouse. The decor is perfect and created a restful and welcoming vibe. We enjoyed canoeing on the lake, with great bird watching. The stargazing deck was perfect when we had a clear night, and also great for watching the lake go by. Lots of hiking in the area: Ferne Clyffe, Heron Pond and Tunnel Hill all nearby. Loved it!

Majestic and Whimsical Tree House

We had a wonderful stay at The Jaybird Treehouse. The property is clean and modern with warm and friendly decor. We loved our stay! We grilled yummy steaks and brats, made ice cream in the Cusinart Ice Cream Maker and warmed up by the firepit at night. The lake was a short walk away and we loved the paddle boat and canoe. We even tried catching a fish or two. I would recommend this place to all! Elyse

Hi! We’re Kris and Matt, the owners of Red Roof Retreats here at Lake of Egypt in Southern Illinois.

What started as one little cabin turned into a collection of unique stays designed for people who love the outdoors, lake life, and simple moments together. We live nearby and are very hands-on with our properties, always looking for ways to make each stay comfortable, clean, and welcoming.

We believe in morning coffee on the deck, stargazing by the firepit, wildlife sightings, and slowing down long enough to actually enjoy where you are.

Whether you’re here to hike Shawnee National Forest, paddle the lake, visit local wineries, or just unplug for a few days, we’re happy you chose to stay with us.

We’re available by call or text if you need anything — but we also respect your space and want you to feel at home.

Welcome to the lake 🤍

— Kris & Matt

Why they chose this property

Jaybird Treehouse offers something you simply don’t get with a traditional cabin — the experience of staying in the trees while still enjoying modern comfort. It’s playful, memorable, and built for guests who want their stay to feel like part of the adventure.

You’ll wake up surrounded by branches and bluejays, spend your days on the lake with included watercraft, and end evenings around the fire under a wide Southern Illinois sky.

It’s especially popular with families and groups who want something different, but it’s just as perfect for couples who love nature and a little creativity in their stay.

If you’re looking for more than just a place to sleep, Jaybird delivers the experience.

What makes this property unique

Jaybird offers a true elevated treehouse experience while still providing full kitchen amenities, modern comforts, and high-speed WiFi — a rare combination of adventure and convenience.

Guests enjoy access to lake toys including a canoe, kayaks, paddleboards, and paddleboats, plus a dock slip for their own boat. Two firepit areas — one near the treehouse and one by the lake — create multiple gathering spots for evenings under the stars.

The playful features, like the trap-door sleeping loft, bucket pulley, tire swing, and hammock, make it especially memorable for families. At the same time, the private wooded setting, sunset views, and frequent wildlife sightings give couples and small groups a peaceful nature retreat.

Add in access to the Red Roof Treats camp store and optional Spa-La-La experiences, and you get both rustic fun and thoughtful extras in one stay.
