About this property

Modernised comfortable cottage close to blue flag beaches on the Dingle way

Muklaghbeg cottage has four bedrooms and three bathrooms and sleeps 8 people.
The cottage is part of a group of 9 cottages situated off a very quiet back road which leads along an estuary into Castlegregory village. It has been lovingly and sympathetically modernised several years ago, and is a warm and comfortable haven in which to unwind, relax and escape from the noise and stress of modern city living. With quality furnishings throughout and an exceptionally well supplied kitchen, there are fabulous views of the mountains behind. Mucklaghbeg is situated in its own grounds - a large lawn outside the sunroom windows is perfect for children, but is adjacent to the other cottages on their own private avenue.

The cottage is located approximately 2K from Castlegregory and 26K from Tralee in County Kerry. The beach is only a 5 minute walk away if you cross the stepping stones at low tide over the Owencashla river, or take a winding lane which leads across a bridge to get to Castlegregory strand. Quiet and peaceful, this area of County Kerry abounds in great walking and wildlife spotting opportunities - Mount Brandon, Ireland's second highest mountain, dominates the views. Golf, fishing, and scuba diving are also found close by. The Maharees on the far side of Castlegregory is home to some of Europes best windsurfing and kitesurfing on Brandon Bay - Irelands longest golden sand beach - and the safe haven of Sandy Bay which has an excellent kids club during the summer months offering Banana boating, Kayaking, a bouncy castle and sea trampolines - fantastic enjoyment for children! Take a drive over Irelands highest mountain road, the Connor Pass, and discover the harbour town of Dingle, or take a boat trip to the Blasket islands for some seal spotting, or even the occasional whale….this is a location you will want to return to again and again.

The Spar supermarket in Castlegregory has an extensive selection of food and drink, so shopping can be done on your doorstep. In the evenings the local pubs have fabulous music and craic, and there are a number of excellent restaurants where a friendly welcome is always assured.

July stay

We found the cottage to have everything we needed for the family. The kids loved the walk to the water every evening. The garden was a bonus for them to play. It was very quiet which we loved and our little one slept longer than anyone because of the peace and quiet.

Absolutely smashing house Spotless, very well equipped. Shop and beach short distance away. Location probably not best for family with small children as no summer camps for small children nearby . Otherwise lovely spot to stay.

Beautifully located holiday house

The location is perfect being an easy walk from the beach and the town. The wider surroundings boast wonderful scenery and the town is friendly with a variety of pubs and restaurants. The house is a fine holiday house, with a good well-equipped kitchen. If the house is fully occupied it's quite small but cosy at night with the fire lit.

Amazing location and fantastic warm house

Getting to the house was relatively easy. The location is very impressive, with ease of access to an amazing beach, castlegregory, and the surrounding areas. The house itself is well stocked and very comfy to hide in when the weather isn't great, and it was literally difficult to leave when our holiday ended. One of the bedrooms beds needs some TLC, but otherwise perfect place.

Lovely cottage with homely feel

The owners were very helpful. Comfy beds and never stayed anywhere before with such an array of kitchen equipment, crockery and store cupboard items. A real home from home.

Quiet, cosy, comfortable, clean, well equipped. Excellent position. Lots of blackberries

Within minutes of arrival had put on our walking shoes and headed out to explore. Less than 5 minutes to the beach and coastal path. Walking back realised that the coastal road to Castlegregory was not going to be passable at high tide! (there is an alternative via the main road) . Foolishly unpacked in what we thought was the main bedroom (largest ensuite) but soon realised there's nowhere for clothes in that room. I then discovered another double bedroom off the lounge which has a smaller ensuite but large wardrobe. The beds are very comfortable and we haven't slept so long for ages! The kitchen is well equipped with large fridge, double oven, and microwave. There are plenty of 'store cupboard' ingredients and a large bottle of drinking water had been left out for us (not sure if you can drink the tap water - but it doesn't taste great) Lounge is cosy - when it got colder later in the week we had some nice fires with the peat briquettes. Large TV works fine and you get most of the UK programmes. Eating in the bright conservatory was very pleasant. Found a music player in a drawer in the conservatory - wasn't clear if intended for guest use but as there wasn't another one available I assumed it was? We hired bikes for the week (uneasy leaving these outside as no shed/garage available - but the guy who hired us the bikes assured us that there was very little crime, just the odd bar brawl!) Cycled to and from dinner in Castlegregory on a couple of occasions and twice out to Spillanes at The Maharees for a drink. Definitely recommend Pisces for food - good atmosphere even though right at the end of the season. Also Moe's cafe in Castlegregory for coffee/brunch/lunch. Many of the other establishments weren't open much during our stay. Well worth driving over the Connor Pass to Dingle and around the Atlantic Way - spectacular. On the best day of the week we climbed Mount Brandon from Cloghane - again spectacular with 360degree views over the peninsula. Note that despite the rugged nature of the landscape there are surprisingly few rights of way. Many great beaches to walk on though. On the worst day of the week I was dragged to the cinema at Tralee to watch Bridget Jones. Large modern cinema but rather empty. The lack of a washing machine at the cottage has been commented on previously, and I think going to be addressed. Laundry service at the beach hut efficient but 13 euros. Spar well stocked. Blackberry picking in the lane another highlight.

Nice house - great location

The location is fab - within a short walk of lovely beach / lagoon, and a short drive from some of the best beaches in the country. The house is lovely - warm, well maintained, clean and modern. It's in a lovely quiet group of holiday houses, but very private, with plenty of room around it and a lovely garden - great for kids. It's very well equipped, and even has plenty of non-perishables in the kitchen (replace what you use as you go). The bedrooms are quite small though. Ours didn't have room for a wardrobe - we had to share one with the room next door. Bizarrely, the house has no washing machine - or even more bizarrely, it does, but it's not accessible to guests. There is a laundrette close by in the village, but for a self-catering holiday, access to a washing machine would strike me as a fairly basic requirement. All in all, we had a great holiday in a lovely location and the house is very nice... but arguably a bit over-priced for what's on offer.

Delightful holiday cottage

Spent a week in this wonderfully appointed cottage visiting the surrounding Dingle Peninsula by car and enjoying the glorious beaches only a few minutes walk away. I would thoroughly recommend this cottage as it had all the facilities needed for self catering and was clean and very well maintained . 5 star .

Fabulous Holiday Home in the heart of Kerry!

We had a super holiday with three teenage children staying in Muklaghbeg cottage. The cottage is perfectly appointed to enjoy a family holiday. We enjoyed cooking and relaxing in the cottage but there are plenty of nice places to eat nearby. A favourite with the kids was Ned Natterjack's for Pizza in Castlegregory ! There is a lovely beach within a short walk and the teenagers thoroughly enjoyed the'Teen Surf Camp' with Jamie Knox Watersports - a short drive away at the Maharees. The cottage is cosy yet has plenty of space for kids to unwind and a lovely garden. Well located on the peninsula and within easy reach of Dingle and Tralee for those who wish to explore further.

Beautiful Cottage with a lovely garden.

Very clean and comfortable with all Mod Cons. The surrounding environment and scenery is one of the most beautiful I have ever come across. The local village, has traditional pubs and a restaurant serving amazing food. Also a Supermarket selling everything you need, including lots of local produce. A short drive to a beach on which we managed a 10K walk and yet still didn't reach the end of it! Locals incredibly friendly. I would (and am) go there again.

Inaccurate Posting - No Hot Tub on site

Planned vacation with family and had narrowed down properties for consideration based on which had a hot tub in the amenities. I chose this property based on an inaccurate listing of amenities and was woefully surprised to find no hot tub at check in. I addressed with owner but was told to take it up with VRBO. The error should be corrected for future renters and it did impact our ability to enjoy the days as planned. I shouldn't be burdened with corrections, etc as I was purchasing a service based on a listing that should be correct when i see it. Nice property, but the experience was not as listed. Also, be prepared to purchase firewood and run outside if you need to store anything in a freezer as there is not one in the kitchen.

A holiday without flaws

Lucy was very keen to ensure we had 10 enjoyable days. We appreciated the heating in the house, though we felt it could have been turned down somewhat - especially with the weather being rather mild. The house met all our expectations, providing comfortable beds, nice showers, a fully equipped kitchen, and last but not least, all sorts of games and books to pass the time indoors. With the house being situated in an area surrounded by various beaches, we could walk along different coastlines, visit tourist attractions or go to restaurants in reasonable driving distance. All in all we had a fabulous time, even when the sun wasn’t shining.

Our family live in London, but spend as much time as we can in Kerry - it is a truly fabulous location to get away from life's pressures. We sadly cannot be there all year round, but want to offer others the wonderful opportunities that County Kerry gives - there really is something for everyone. We have 2 boys who have spent their holidays in Kerry since they were tiny - and they still love returning!

Why they chose this property

It is close to Castlegregory and Tralee, but rural enough to be really peaceful. There are 8 other cottages in our immediate area, but we all co-operate and keep the place very well maintained - grass cut, avenue cared for etc. Rubbish is collected weekly.

What makes this property unique

Rural and tranquil - a tonic for the soul, but loads to do if you choose to do so.
