Lumsden Cottage provides a rare opportunity to experience a glimpse into Bruny Island's architectural history. This grand and elegant property is 125 years old, but modern restoration work has brought this beautiful home back to life! Sleeping six guests and minutes away from the Island's best food including cheese, oysters and wine with the beach a short walk away, you can explore the Island and then retreat into inviting, cosy living quarters and soft beds. Historical Background Built in 1902 for the local Anglican Minister, this property is known as 'The Doll's House' and was inhabited by Rev. Christopher Lumsden and his two unmarried sisters. The home was originally a four-roomed "two-up two-down" (bedrooms) English-style cottage with a lean-to kitchen at the back, french doors and an external staircase. A thorough renovation in the 1980's modernised the kitchen and bathroom. A further renovation has seen a new roof and the addition of further modern touches such as new wiring, polishing timber floors, opening up spaces inside and the inclusion of a large deck, whilst preserving its historical character. Interiors The ground floor has a fully equipped, updated kitchen with an open living/dining area with polished hardwood floors. Large french doors open to the lower veranda, which extends from the front to the northern side and around to the rear, where it joins a renovated deck. This level also has a warm and inviting living room, with a modern bathroom and separate laundry. A beautiful staircase has been preserved which takes you to the upper level. Two of the three bedrooms open through french doors to the upper veranda and the third bedroom on this level has a dormer window looking out to the hills behind Great Bay. The rear veranda and deck have an outlook into a sheltered garden. All efforts have been taken to ensure a good night's sleep and an environment that nurtures the spirit. We invite you to spend your Bruny Island adventure at Lumsden Cottage and hope you have the most wonderful adventures here! The manager does not interact with the guests as the property is self check in. This property is pet friendly, please note there is a $100 refundable pet fee. The property is fenced but it is not fully enclosed. The cubby house in the backyard is not safe to use.
