Some houses ask you to choose between grand and comfortable. Moon River does not. It is a stone villa on ten private acres, all turrets and clay tile and arched entries on the outside, and on the inside a house built for a family or two to settle into for a week. The Hill Country falls away behind the house to the Blanco River, and the whole property is arranged to face that view, from the loggia to the pools to the stone path that leads down to the water.
Spring and summer are when the place opens up. Mornings start slow on the terrace with coffee and the sound of the river below. Afternoons belong to the pools, the court, and the water, and evenings run long at the outdoor table under the oaks with the meadow going gold behind you.
THE HOUSE
You enter under an arched stone portico into a great room that climbs to 25-foot ceilings, built around a carved stone fireplace and framed by arched steel doors. Travertine floors and groin-vaulted archways lead through the gallery halls, and a spiral staircase rises to the upstairs bedrooms.
The kitchen is the heart of the house and it is a serious one, two granite islands, a professional range with a griddle set into a stone cooking alcove, Sub-Zero refrigeration, and a walk-through pantry that opens to a second catering kitchen for holiday-scale cooking. There is a formal dining table for eight, a breakfast table for six to eight, and a paneled wine bar for the hour before dinner.
The primary suite sits on the main level with a fireplace and doors to the terrace, and its bath is a room of its own, a stone fireplace, a chandelier, a whirlpool tub, and a walk-in steam shower. A media room with a reclining sectional and a wet bar keeps everyone together after dark, and a gym off the primary suite is open to guests. Across the fountain courtyard, a separate guest house holds two more bedrooms upstairs over a full kitchen, a living room, and a balcony that runs its length.
THE OUTDOOR LIVING COMPLEX
The back of the house is a covered loggia the length of the building, with a long dining table, a grill, and archways that hold the view. Two pools step down the terrace, one reaching an edge over the river valley, with a spa alongside and stone fountains through the grounds. A smoker and outdoor kitchen handle the cooking. Out front, a lit court is lined for tennis and pickleball with a basketball hoop. Ten acres of oak meadow surround the house with a mowed walking path, and below it all, the land steps down to a private stretch of the Blanco River made for swimming and fishing.
WHO STAYS HERE
Moon River is built for large groups who want space and quiet in the same place. It suits two families traveling together, multi-generational trips where the grandparents want a main-level suite and the cousins want their own guest house, and corporate or brand retreats that need room to work and unwind. It is not a party or event house, and it rewards guests who come to slow down.
THE LOCATION
The estate sits in the hills outside Wimberley, private on its acreage but close to town. Wimberley Square and Cypress Creek Cafe are twelve minutes away, Blue Hole Regional Park fourteen, and Jacob's Well twenty. Seventh Son's Vineyards is a mile away, Wimberley Valley Winery is fifteen minutes out, The Salt Lick BBQ thirty, and Hamilton Pool Preserve thirty five. San Marcos is twenty five minutes, downtown Austin fifty two, San Antonio about an hour, and Austin Bergstrom International Airport fifty.
