Tamarind House means different things to the people who have already experienced its beauty and legendary hospitality.
The rare luxury of space and privacy. Room to relax, to breathe, to rejuvenate and dream. Happy memories of drinks and laughter under the tamarind tree. Long white curtains billowing in the breeze. Swimming in the pool under a full moon. Bouganvillea climbing the walls - fuchsia, violet and orange flowers set against a clear blue sky Rum cocktails and fish cakes at sunset.
Tamarind House is located just off the Anse Chastanet Road approximately 1.5 miles from Soufriere and .5 miles from Anse Chastanet Beach. It is a 10 minute walk down to the beach and a 20 minute hike back up the hill. Covering 8850 Sq. Ft. of space, the house is constructed of local stone with exceptionally high 25 foot ceilings and Barbados terracotta tiles throughout. The main house has three bedrooms and bathrooms while the separate Cottage is a master bedroom suite with its own living room, kitchen, dressing area, four poster king size bed and terrace.
The 35 x 15 foot totally private pool is situated below the Cottage and has 1060 sq ft of terrace and shade pavilion around it. The pool edge is open on one side to give uninterrupted views of the Pitons. The house also has a professional size tennis court with a Bioflex surface and of course superb views of the Pitons as you play.
In the main house, a descending staircase leads you into a cool, circular courtyard filled with banana plants and flowers. As you pass through the graceful stone arch doorway, the enormous 2550 sq ft living room stretches away before you and leads to the terrace where the tamarind tree grows up out of the tiles. This fabulous tree provides shade and coolness to the house all through the day. The living room features two seven foot settees and a very large travertine stone coffee table. The round reproduction antique dining table seats 6-8.
The master bedroom has a beautiful king size four poster bed, side tables, hand carved standing cheval mirror and small armoire. There is a walk in closet with a safe, Italian tiled bathroom with shower and double sinks. Open the shower doors and look at the Pitons while bathing! The second bedroom has a queen antique four poster bed, private terrace, Italian tiled bathroom with shower also open to the view. There is a walk in closet and two blue and white Chinese lamps beside the bed. The third bedroom is for children and has two four poster beds, a double and a twin. It looks out onto a private terrace and the courtyard. The Cottage master bedroom suite has three graceful stone arch openings and 25 foot ceilings. Long white curtains at each doorway billow out in the breeze. Two large 7 foot couches with blue and white cushions, a large coffee table and antique tables beside the king size four poster bed make this a wonderfully romantic space. A collection of paintings by St. Kitts artist Kate Spencer are on display here. There is a marble tiled bathroom with shower and a dressing area plus a kitchen with fridge, stove, glasses, plates etc. Exceptionally high quality 100% cotton sheets, and plush towels are standard in all the bedrooms and bathrooms. Each bedroom has a hair dryer provided. Electricity is 220 volts. Staff included six days a week Monday - Saturday for cooking and cleaning. They prepare breakfast, lunch and will leave something prepared for your dinner. New Brinkman 3 burner gas grill/charcoal grill new in 2015 season.Staff come up six days a week , Monday - Saturday, from 9am - 3-pm. Staff must come up at least every other day to clean. Keywords: Large family villa
I lived in St. Lucia from the early 1980's until 2011. Tamarind House was a private home and always open to friends and family. It is now open for memorable family gatherings by renting on VRBO. I can answer almost any question you might have about the Soufriere area. And I have a wide circle of people who can help to make your holiday a dream come true.
Wonderfully large space, room for everyone to have their own space but be together as well. Fantastic staff who cook fabulous meals.
The villa was gorgeous, Anne and Cheryl did a great job with the food and with taking care of villa. Possibly the most breathtaking views that I have consistently had the opportunity to experience. The beach is about a 20 minute walk and its very intense coming up the hill. Be sure to negotiate prices for trips into town and around the island before leaving the villa. Recommend the volcano tour and the botanical garden as well as a trip to Sugar Beach. We picked a water taxi ride with Johnny Bismo and went to Castries, Marigot Bay and Ti Kai to snorkel, that was a great day. The villa is a little isolated and Id recommend looking for a music streaming service that works in St. Lucia.
Our family just returned from a week vacation at the Tamarind house. Nancy was very flexible and easy to work with. She even arranged to have a birthday cake made for our daughter! The house is stunning. The architecture of the home with all the artwork and furnishings is gorgeous. The views of the pitons, flowers and fruit trees make you feel like you are in the Garden of Eden. Waking up to the pitons, stunning views and birds singing every morning was wonderful. One of the best parts of Tamarind is Ann and Cheryl. Together these two fabulous ladies prepare breakfast and lunch everyday. They also keep the home spotless. The food was delicious! We were served daily fresh squeezed juice, and different flavored gelato almost every day. We were never disappointed with any meal Ann prepared. She even gave me the recipe of one of our favorites! We spent the majority of our days at the pool that has an incredible view of the ocean and pitons. The beach is within walking distance. We only booked one excursion due to truly enjoying everything Tamarind had to offer. Relaxation at its best!
My name is Chris Wing.
Every December after our Company's last Board meeting we have a family reunion. My wife, her parents, my eldest son and his fiancé, my adult daughter, my toddler son and myself.
We have been to VRBOs throughout Hawaii and the Caribbean.
The Tamarand Home is the best yet.
The views from each of the main bedrooms are unbelievable!
Taking breakfast underneath the Tamarand tree on the patio is really spectacular.
Our help- Cheryl, Anna and Diddya are friendly, efficient and great cooks.
I can't say enough about this place- other than-
We will be coming back!!!
The great: We had a fantastic visit to St Lucia and thoroughly enjoyed Soufriere in particular. Beautiful place, beautiful people – we will definitely be back. The views from this home are spectacular!!!! We spent a large percentage of our time just marveling at the majestic Pitons, enjoying sunsets and identifying the diversity of the plants, flowers and birds living on the property. The house is open-air and feels very tropical. We were serenaded to sleep by frogs at night and even enjoyed a few lovely rainstorms. There is no air conditioning at the house, but we were never too hot as there are nice winds and fans in every room. The furniture is comfortable as were the beds and bedding. Ann and Cheryl were very nice and the food they made for us was very good. It’s such a treat to go on vacation and let go of all the daily chores. Nancy was easy to deal with and answered all my questions. We arranged for Popo’s to drive us to/from the airport and to get around during our stay (he’d even drop us off and pick us up later) which was very nice.
The not so good: The electrical was wonky and fried our baby monitor even though we were using a high-end convertor. We ended up only plugging things in when we could watch them and take them off if it got too hot. Many lights didn’t work and seemed to be wired incorrectly. This concerned me because the only way to lock up the house at night is to pad lock yourself in with a different key for each lock. I slept with the keys in my pillow and unplugged anything that seemed dangerous because I was worried about getting out quickly should there be a fire. The wi-fi was terrible because the router is broken - a simple, inexpensive fix. There isn’t enough furniture on the balconies and various outdoor spaces. The pool was extremely dirty and we had to clean it ourselves before we were able to use it. There were also several cigarette buts on the balcony - yuck. While this is a tropical, open home, there were a lot of bugs. We were fastidious in cleaning up food scraps, but we saw quite a few roaches. While it's not possible to avoid this entirely, it might be time for a visit from an exterminator. The ceiling fan in the MBR was very loud and wobbly - an easy fix. More towels in the bathrooms would also be nice. While many of these things are small and definitely wouldn’t prevent me from referring the house, a few easy fixes would make this property more in keeping with a “luxury” rental in this price point.
Often times, you see photographs of homes and when you get there, you can tell that the owner hired a really good photographer to "enhance" the property. Well, Tamarind House is the exception: The images on VRBO do not do it justice. The home and the scenery are beautiful. I have been fortunate to have traveled to many nice places, and Tamarind House, St Lucia is easily in the top 3!
Our group of 7 (ages 10-54) loved Tamarind House and St Lucia. This is the perfect location to stay in St. Lucia. It is away from the crowds, close to great restaurants, snorkeling, diving and the wonderful people of Soufriere. Tamarind House was a perfect "home base" for us while we where in St. Lucia. We spent a lot of time exploring the island, but always ended up in the pool at sunset, toasting the success of the day!
The staff is good and will take good care of you - very friendly and excellent cooks!
I would highly recommend this property to anyone planning a trip to St. Lucia.
W had a wonderful time at Tamarind House this May. We were a group of 4 adults with 3 young kids (ages 3, 3, and 6). We spent many hours in the pool, playing and gazing at the Pitons. The pool area is beautifully done, with lots of seating and shade, as well as lots of space in the pool, and even some blow up pool toys for the kids.
Cheryl and Ann took amazing care of us. This was the reason we booked this home, based on the previous reviews, and we were not disappointed. They are very warm, caring, and amazing cooks. We had delicious food all week, and we even had them do the grocery shopping for us (for an extra fee, which was reasonable).
The home is spacious and well appointed. The mosquito nets were very good quality, so no worries about bites.
We used Poppo as a driver (we did not rent as the roads up to the house are very difficult to drive, SO glad we did not rent a vehicle), and he was fantastic. A very safe and courteous driver, and reasonable rates.
Nancy was fantastic to deal with, and answered all our pre-trip questions quickly and thoroughly.
As we were there in May, it was VERY warm with very little breeze through the house. There is no A/C as this is a house designed to take advantage of the trade winds. I think in the cooler months this works very well, but it was really warm for us. There are fans in the bedrooms, which were just enough for us, but in the main rooms when there is no wind, it can be a bit hot. So, we just spent more time in the pool. Do not let this stop you from booking this beautiful home, it is just something I wish I was mentally prepared for=)
Thank you so much for having us in your beautiful home!
Tamarind House is just absolutely stunning, the view, the beautiful flowering grounds and the dramatic Beaty of the house itself. The house is pretty much beautiful stone and large expansive heavy wooden doors, that when opened the beginning and end of the home and the lush grounds becomes a bit blurred. The house is beautifully furnished and full of magnificent artwork and an eclectic library of music.
The island is so green and alive - there are so many different things to explore. But Tamarind House will make it difficult to leave. When I sat on the patio and drank my morning coffee I felt like it almost didn't seem real, it was so perfect.
And it doesn't stop there, the house comes with a staff that have been there as long Tamarind House has. And it shows, the connection Ann, Cheryl and Paul have with the house and each other is apparent. This house is loved, and you in turn feel that love. Ann and Cheryl spoiled us with their cooking and freshening up the house each day with fresh linens, flowers. But best were their smiles, always fun to talk with. Paul keeps everything working and the grounds in pristine shape.
And then there is Nancy, she is an amazing host. She is very quick to respond, warm and informative. She is willing to accommodate any reasonable request if she can and she is gracious. She spent a great deal of her personal time and effort to help one of the members of our group that was having problems getting a visa for the trip. She helped quickly and never seemed put out. She checked in on us, never obtrusive.
All the way around this has been one of the best stays and interactions I have had. The only less than outstanding thing I can say Has nothing to do with the home staff or Nancy. During our stay, our group went diving a few days. I worry for the reef and the marine life around the island, there is no marine park- and with all the boat traffic and overfishing the reefs were in poor condition. I was genuinely surprised at how little marine life there was. Hopefully that is something the island has in its future.
If Nancy will have us, we would love to return!
