Property description

WE'VE JUST HAD A CANCELLATION FOR TWO WEEKS 18 JUNE TO 2 JULY 2016!!!!
Fully restored in 2008, L’Ourdissoir combines the best of both worlds, old and new. Originally a grange, then a weaver's atelier, it is an independent, separate stone cottage with 75 m2 of living space, restored with great attention to detail. Downstairs, the 35 M2 living area is designed for comfortable living while retaining the cachet of the original stone structure (exposed stone walls, old beams, local stone pavers): a new, fully-equipped kitchen, spacious and inviting dining and sitting areas to be enjoyed during all seasons, thanks to thick stone walls, double-glazed windows and a state-of-the-art “green” wood pellet stove.

The two bedrooms will accommodate up to four people: the larger one upstairs has a queen-sized bed (160 cm) and direct access to the garden and outdoor sitting areas, while the downstairs bedroom has a double bed (140 cm), a WC and washbasin for your convenience. Upstairs, the bathroom has a shower, separate WC, large washbasin and washing machine (clothes can be dried by the provençal sun on an outdoor line in a beautiful spot or in an electric dryer located in the stone cabanon two steps from the house). All rooms have views of the pool, garden, orchard and hills.

At L’Ourdissoir opportunities for outdoor living abound and your home has three points of access to the exterior. Just steps from your cottage door you will enjoy own private plunge pool (2.3 x 3.4 meters) set in local stone for your exclusive use. The one-hectare (2.5 acres) park-like setting includes a variety of spaces to enjoy sun or shade provided by the many species of mature trees, seclusion or open views during all seasons and a variety of garden furniture to enhance your comfort and enjoyment (benches, outdoor tables & chairs, hammocks, sun loungers). It is an ideal place for reading, writing, painting, al fresco dining, yoga, relaxing, bird watching, strolling, picnicking. Cradled in a peaceful valley, the property is surrounded by open fields and a hillside covered with native vegetation (wild lavender, thyme and savory) and crisscrossed by dry stone walls. We enjoy views of the Montagne de Lure to the east, and the village of L’Hospitalet to the south.

Here at Le Champ de l’Amant, the sun shines over 300 days of the year, providing dazzling blue skies and stunning starry nights. Our valley is a paradise for a wide variety of outdoor activities. There are facilities for horseback riding, hot air ballooning and paragliding in the immediate area and we have direct (no driving) access to many riding, cycling and hiking trails (such as the Tour de la Montagne de Lure GR). Nestled in the heart of lavender country, the property is within easy walking distance to the twin villages of Saumane-L’Hospitalet (1 and 2 km, respectively). Saumane has a café-bistrot and there are numerous excellent 'bistrots de pays' and restaurants featuring terroir cuisine in the surrounding villages and towns. We are only 7 minutes from Banon, famous for its chèvre cheese bundled in chestnut leaves and home to one of France’s greatest bookshops, Le Bleuet. Banon is a vibrant hub town, which offers galleries, cafés, restaurants, a tea shop, a wine bar, a well-stocked grocery store, a framing and bookbinding studio, numerous concerts, a cheese festival and hosts a lively farmers' market on Tuesday mornings. Just beyond Banon, you can explore the cobbled streets leading to the XIIth chateau-rotunda which crowns the fortified medieval village of Simiane-la-Rotonde, home to a baroque music festival, or admire the stunning views into the gorges from the perched village of Oppedette.

The bustling towns of Forcalquier, Apt and Manosque are all nearby. In Manosque, you can visit the pedestrian streets of the ancient, walled town center, take a French language immersion class, or visit the Occitane skin care products factory. The farmers’ markets at Forcalquier and Apt are among the very best in Provence. Next to Forcalquier, you can treat yourself to a day of pampering at the world-class Occitane spa in the Couvent des Minimes in Mane. Fifteen minutes beyond Apt, you can explore the beautiful perched villages of the Luberon (Roussillon, Bonnieux, Ménerbes, Gordes, Oppède) or go antiquing at Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. The vibrant provençal cities of Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Nîmes and Marseille, as well coastal towns such as Cassis with its calanques and points of interest such as St. Rémy, Moustiers, Le Pont du Gard, the Gorges du Verdon all make wonderful day trips.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2007

About the owner: My love affair with France and French literature and culture started early in life and has continued non-stop. I taught French in California for over thirty years and spent nearly every vacation, as well as some exchange and sabbatical years in this country. So, when my kids grew up and I retired, moving to Provence full-time was totally natural. I wanted a rural setting and ended up buying and restoring and old farm building in the Banon area . Some of favorite activities are hiking with our Irish Water Spaniels, sampling local restaurants or dining with friends and cooking (with great basic ingredients available in the south of France).

Why the Owner Chose Saumane, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France:
I chose Le Champ de l’Amant for the BIG REASON: the quality of life, “la qualité de la vie”. Living in rural France, we can have our cake and eat it too, so to speak. No pollution, great food, a slower life style where people still take the time to savor meals, spend time together, practice the art of conversation and live in harmony with nature (including eating real foods that are in season). At the same time, we benefit from the best medical delivery system in the world (as rated by the World Health Organization), an excellent infrastructure, the benefits of technology, including high-speed internet, a fantastic transportation and communication network, a sense of style (“le French touch”), personal discretion and respect. I live in the country, far from the crowds, hype and glitz, feast my eyes every day on beautiful landscapes and lovely perched stone villages, surrounded by wonderful and diverse friends, yet we can be in downtown Marseille, the second largest city in France, in an hour and a half or take the TGV high-speed train and be in the center of Paris in less than three hours for an easy and stimulating weekend.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Living with the seasons, for me means curling up in front of the fire with a glass of Côtes du Ventoux in the winter, walking up my valley and buying gorgeous artisanal goat cheese from neighbors in the spring, opening the windows at night (no light pollution) to see the glorious night skies and smell the freshly-cut lavender in the summer, and hunting for delicious wild mushrooms in the hills behind our house in the fall. Seriously, how could we envy anyone? Visitors at our guest cottage, L’Ourdissoir, will get a taste of authentic Provence. As some friends have said, this is real!
