3BR Unclassified Vacation Rental Peaks Island, Maine USA
The Shamrock's 'Luck' has been ours since we bought this home on friendly, 'get-away-from-it-all' Peaks Island. The home originated in the late 1800's and was completely renovated ten years ago with updates annually.
This friendly, pristine, picturesque island has something for everyone. It has a rural atmosphere with its even distribution of homes amongst tall elm and maple trees and natural wild flowers and shrubbery and grasses. All this surrounded by rocky and sandy shoreline. The open ocean rolls in onto the rocky 'backshore' often providing pounding sounds and spirals and sprays of water (awesome and picturesque). On the harbor side of the island the water is more tranquil and provides a setting for many beautiful sunsets with the City of Portland as a backdrop. And as the sun sets the city lights provide another island vista. Witnessing this sunset event is a great time to get that ice cream cone or dinner on the deck of the restaurants.
Activities range from relaxing on the wrap-around porch to biking (there's a rental shop on the island), jogging, walking, or roller-blading around the island's approximately 4.5-mile perimeter road -- as you keep refreshed by sea breezes and enjoying the natural scenery. You'll see lovely vegetation, wildflowers, the surf, and a variety of birds. And you'll see the waterways being plied by lobstermen, sail boaters, the occasional windsurfer, and kayakers. Or you might be the more laid-back walker who can take in the same beautiful vista and sea breezes, or you might try one of several trails through the woods that can lead to WWII bunkers and look out towers. Along the Island's shore road there are benches to sit and take it all in.
From the decks of the island's four wonderful restaurants, you can enjoy a fresh lobster roll while viewing the tranquil harbor or watching the sunset behind the Portland skyline. Occasionally the sun can be seen setting behind Mt. Washington.
Other activities and places of interest are the pancake breakfasts, craft and art shops and shows, churches and club fairs, the Civil War museum, and the gift shops. Picnicking on backshore at Whaleback or Tablerock or some other spot while taking in the view of the North Atlantic and the several islands that are just north of Peaks might be the thing for you to do. When you finish doing these activities you can probably find time to buy fresh lobsters from an island lobster man.
If you feel island-bound, the City of Portland is only a 15 - 17 minute ferry ride away. There, another array of activities such as tour boats, charter fishing, movies, malls, museums and more fine restaurants are available. A popular attraction is the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox's Double-A minor league team, the Portland Sea Dogs. And returning to the peace and low stress of the Island after a
If a summer vacation is not available to you, then Fall with its foliage and sunny days is also a fine time to vacation on the island.
Peaks Island is the perfect place to do something or to do nothing but relax.

Homey, comfortable, everything you need!
Staying here was like being at the family summer house. The house was delightfully full of chachkies, rugs, wall ornaments, and furniture. In the kitchen are miscellaneous utensils, bowls, dishes and the like for preparing a meal. The large porch gets a mix of sun and shade; it was a great place to eat meals and lay out to take a snooze or read a book.
There are three rooms: two larger (but still small) and one very small. One of the larger rooms has a queen bed and closet, the other has two single beds and a closet. The smallest room has a double bed against the wall with no closet. Also there are two bathrooms with showers (one has a newish washer/dryer), a kitchen, dining room, and living room with TV and cable. There is a limit of 6 people staying here at a time so as not to put too much pressure on the plumbing but even without this consideration, more than 6 would be *very* challenging.
I stayed with my sisters, two baby nephews, me and husband on the first weekend. In the room with the two single beds and we were able to squeeze a pack-n-play in the corner. With the toddlers, not having a bath tub was a challenge, as were the steep stairs, and many interesting models and such all around, but being on the island provided plenty of interesting places to go and things to do with small children.
The second weekend we had two aunts, my mom, me and my husband (5 adults). We never felt crowded. Another note: The walls are paper thin. Although there is plenty of space to get some time alone, you can hear most sounds through the vent in the floor or through the walls.
Peaks is a great place to stay, it's quiet, the people are friendly, and there are lots of lovely walks to go on. We had a little bit of an emergency and after going to the ER, the island doctors were wonderful (and very close to this cottage!) with the follow-up.
A few warnings: in the summer months it can be a challenge to get a car on a car ferry because they fill up fast, there is a lot of glass on the beaches and shallow water so you'll need to always wear sandals or keep a sharp eye out, the beaches are small and rocky, and the island store has a very limited selection. The watchword with island living is always planning, planning, planning!
Portland, and therefore available to Peaks Island vacationors, offers an array of activities from restaurants to shopping and museums. Unique to Portland/Casco Bay is the opportunity to sail on restored vintage wooden hulled sloops through staffed tours. Or take the Casco Bay mail run to more Islands while viewing shoreline homes and other watercraft while in transit ( pack a lunch or eat on one of the islands; bring a bike if you want to ).
