About the Property

9 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, Sleeps up to 16

We welcome you to enjoy with us a piece of our history; the Castle of Lisheen, standing sentry among the rolling green hills of Munster since the early 19th Century. This historic Irish castle has been lovingly restored by the Everard family, and was opened in the year 2000 as a unique luxury rental option for the most discerning of guests. During your stay at Lisheen the entire castle will be exclusive to you and your party making it a unique experience to be remembered. The castle is located centrally in Ireland in the County of Tipperary making it an ideal location to access many of the magnificent and historic sites of Ireland on a day trip basis.

Remaining true to the original vision of the castle, we have researched in detail the architectural and interior design of the historic castle structure. Every piece of furniture, light fitting, window and floor covering has been sourced, selected or specially manufactured for Lisheen Castle. The result is a stunning fusion of the grandeur of times past and the luxury of modern four-star accommodation.

Offering luxury accommodation for up to 16 guests, each room is uniquely decorated in a traditional style to suit this historic castle. The highest quality antique furniture has been coupled with modern conveniences you would expect of such a high-end property. There are six ensuite double rooms suitable for 6 couples, two single rooms for single occupancy and one twin room which has 2 single beds in the castle.

The castle’s formal reception rooms; the drawing and dining rooms, both feature hand-painted murals on original vaulted Norman ceilings from which hang impressive antique chandeliers.

Both formal and family friendly traditional dining facilities are on offer at Lisheen Castle. The formal dining room seats 16 people in extravagant old world style, while the traditional Irish kitchen offers a cozy informal dining area. A fully equipped professional kitchen is available for your use, or we can organize a catering team on request.

Lisheen Castle is renowned for offering escorted touring vacations, suitable for groups of up to 16 people. Our week long tailored itineraries visit Ireland’s most popular historic, cultural and sporting attractions which have been personally chosen by the Everard family. Visit the Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, Kilkenny Medieval City, The Rock of Cashel and the historic town of Cobh with its award winning Titanic Experience. In the evenings, enjoy traditional Irish Music sessions in local pubs and dining in the very best restaurants Ireland has to offer.

Lisheen Castle’s location in North Tipperary provides a fantastic base for touring Ireland. As Lisheen Castle overlooks a patchwork quilt of green fields and distant mountains, it is easy to see why Ireland is known in the USA as the Land of Forty Shades of Green! While the castle is located in a scenic rural setting, it is only minutes from some of Ireland main motorways allowing for easy driving for those who chose to hire a car. Dublin Airport is an easy 2-hour drive from Lisheen Castle.

The area also lends itself perfectly to taking advantage of all that Ireland’s great outdoors has to offer, within easy accessibility of Lisheen is an array of sporting and adventure activities such as hillwalking, angling, golfing and horse racing.

Lisheen Castles location in a rural setting Lisheen Castle does not adversely affect the fantastic range of restaurants, pubs and dining options that are all attractive options for an evening meal for visitors and locals alike, here are some of our favorites:

Chez Hans Restaurant

The whole style of the Chez Hans is superb and provides an unusual and atmospheric setting in a renovated church for the seriously fine food which people travel great distances to sample.

Café Hans

Chef Jason returned from working in some of London’s finest kitchens and joined his father owner of Chez Hans in the business in 1998. He opened the less formal bistro style Café Hans. Jason brought renewed energy to Café Hans and Chez Hanz, confirming the status of both eateries as one of the leading restaurants in Munster.

Inch House Restaurant

Expect exceptional standards of service and quality at Inch House Restaurant where the Egan family will host you. Inch House restaurant has built an excellent reputation for itself over the past 20 years. Far away from the hustle and bustle of urban life Inch House offers a uniquely luxurious experience, combining cooking with all of the comforts afforded by the 18th century gentry.

Mitchel House Restaurant

Located in Mitchel Street in Thurles, Mitchel House serves modern Irish Cusine in a relaxed environment. Owner Michael O’Dwyer is the third generation to operate a business from this property. Michael has come home to breathe new life into the well-known Thurles landmark.

Great company, great drinks and some fantastic traditional Irish music are on offer in some of Tipperary's finest pubs:

O’Gorman’s “The Monks” Pub Thurles

Pub trading, at ‘The Monks,’ public house, goes back to just after the Great Famine period in Irish History, around 1860, with the basic structure today little changed. Despite the name P.O’Gorman clearly displayed over the door, the pub has become known as ‘The Monks. If you are looking for the ultimate in a real Irish traditional pub experience, then a visit to “The Monks,” is essential at least once in anyone’s lifetime.

De Burca’s Pub, Thurle

This pub is owned by the family of fiddle player Theresa Bourke, of Bru Boru, Spirit of Ireland and Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance and as you may expect from a pub with such musical ownership, it is a fantastic venue to visit to enjoy some traditional Irish music while on your vacation in Tipperary. Scheduled music sessions are held every second Friday.

Jim of the Mill Pub, Upperchurch

A traditional Irish Shebeen recognizable as a public house only by a string of cars parked outside! A great venue to enjoy some traditional Irish music, with sessions taking place every Thursday night.

Larkin’s Pub

Situated on the banks of Lough Derg and the river Shannon, Larkins pub is an award wining Gastro Pub. Known for great food, drink and “craic” (fun), traditional Irish music sessions are played at Larkin’s every week

Manager info

Year Purchased: 1995

About: Lisheen Castle was purchased by my parents in 1995. The castle had been a ruin, close to my fathers dairy farm for all of his life. It was a lifelong dream of his to restore the historic castle to its former glory. The project took five years to complete and was really a labour of love. Lisheen Castle was built in the early 1800's and stood for over 100 years before it was burned to the ground during the Irish War of Independence. It remained in ruin until 1995 when it was purchased by my family and in the realization of a life long dream my father and mother Micheal and Joan Everard began to restore the castle. Where to begin? The castle had been burnt to the ground, only the stone walls were still standing, surprisingly the stone work to the front of the castle was in reasonably good shape. Good shape that is, when you consider that the building had mature trees growing in its interior! The ambitious and expensive project progressed slowly, working with local builder and craftsman Mick Cleary and using photographs donated by the descendants of the castles original family to guide the restoration. The interior of the castle offered no such guides, there was no photographs of the interior of the castle in existence and there were very few people alive with memories of the castle in its prime. The restoration of the interior of the castle was researched thoroughly by my mother Joan Everard. She labored tirelessly to ensure that each piece of decor was the perfect choice to compliment the historic nature of the castle while ensuring that the finished project was one of luxury and indulgence to be enjoyed by Lisheen Castles guests for many years to come.

Why Thurles Townparks, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland:
Below is an extract from an article written by one of our guests who visited Lisheen Castle. Driven By A Dream How one Irish family traversed 200 years to rebuild Lisheen Castle By John D. Adams “By degrees the castles are built.” - Irish proverb For generations the hulking ruin of Lisheen Castle loomed a kilometer from the Everard family’s 300-acre dairy land in County Tipperary, Ireland. Everard children have played in the shadows of the ruin, perhaps unaware of their exceptional surroundings. But in the 1960s, a young Michael Everard watched more closely as severe Irish seasons slowly consumed the parapets, stone and mortar back into the peaty earth. While working on the family’s farm, young Everard envisioned saving the castle and restoring it to its former glory. Forty years later, alongside his wife, Joan and son Zane, that dream would come to astonishing fruition.

The Unique Benefits at this Castle:
Lisheen Castle is in a truly enchanting location with stunning views of rolling Irish hills. The Castle shows itself as a majestic stone castle standing sentry on the landscape. Inside its interiors offer not only luxury but a character that could not be easily emulated. Each room has its own personality which is reflected in the carefully chosen antique or custom made fixtures and fittings. The formal reception rooms are impressive and offer a real sense of occasion, while the less formal library and kitchen dining areas create a homely feel in which to relax and unwind. The location of Lisheen is perfect for a touring holiday, allowing you easy access to all of Ireland's top visitor attractions, and escorted vacations are on offer. While the castle is offered as a self catering vacation rental or fully escorted touring holiday, it is owned and operated by the Everard family, which ensures a traditional Irish welcome to all guests.
