About this property

Lisheen Castle, Beautifully Restored, Perfect Central Location for Day Tripping

Welcome to Lisheen castle, standing sentry among the rolling green hills of Munster since the early 1800's. This historic Irish castle has been completely restored from ruin by the Everard family who live locally. During your stay at Lisheen the entire castle will be exclusive to you and your party making it a unique experience to be remembered. The castle has 9 bedrooms in total, 8 of which have their own bathrooms. The castle is located centrally in Ireland in the County of Tipperary making it an ideal location to access many of the magnificent and historic sites of Ireland on a day trip basis.

Some of the amenities at the castle include a private flood lit tennis court, basketball, bicycles, play house and the stables of the castle have recently been converted to a leisure room with table tennis, pool table and table football.

Remaining true to the original vision of the castle, we have researched in detail the architectural and interior design of the historic castle structure. Every piece of furniture, light fitting, window and floor covering has been sourced, selected or specially manufactured for Lisheen Castle. The result is a stunning fusion of the grandeur of times past and the luxury of modern accommodation.

Offering luxury accommodation for up to 16 guests, each room is uniquely decorated in a traditional style to suit this historic castle. The highest quality antique furniture has been coupled with modern conveniences you would expect of a high-end property.

There are 9 bedrooms in total, there are 6 double rooms suitable for couples, 2 single rooms suitable for single occupancy and 1 twin room which has 2 single beds in it. 8 of 9 bedrooms have their own bathroom, only 1 single room is without bathroom, it has a wash hand basin and shares full bathroom facilities with another bedroom via a separate door from the corridor.

The castle’s formal reception rooms; the drawing and dining rooms, both feature hand-painted murals on original vaulted Norman ceilings from which hang impressive antique chandeliers.

Both formal and family friendly traditional dining facilities are on offer at Lisheen Castle. The formal dining room seats 16 people in extravagant old world style, while the traditional Irish kitchen offers a cozy more informal dining area. A fully equipped professional kitchen is available for your use.

As an extra Lisheen Castle can also offer escorted touring vacations, suitable for groups of up to 16 people. Our week long tailored itineraries visit Ireland’s most popular historic, cultural and sporting attractions which have been personally chosen by the Everard family. Lisheen Castle is very centrally located in Ireland in North Tipperary providing a fantastic base for touring Ireland. As Lisheen Castle overlooks a patchwork quilt of green fields and distant mountains, it is easy to see why Ireland is known in the USA as the Land of Forty Shades of Green! While the castle is located in a scenic rural setting, it is only minutes from some of Irelands main motorways allowing for easy driving for those who chose to hire a car. Dublin Airport is an easy 2-hour drive from Lisheen Castle and Shannon Airport is 1.5 hrs.

The area lends itself perfectly to taking advantage of all that Ireland’s great outdoors has to offer, within easy accessibility of Lisheen is an array of sporting and adventure activities such as hill-walking, angling, golfing and horse racing.

Incredible Castle Stay
The property exceeded expectations. Zane was constantly checking in on us . Would highly recommend--just note that no more than 5 extra guests can visit the castle above those staying with you in the castle. It was a dream vacation.

Grand property
The castle was amazing. The grounds were so beautiful and well manicured. Tennis court was great and had lights for nighttime playing. The castle was clean, bedrooms were large with comfortable beds, expansive living areas throughout. The owner was responsive and very helpful. We rented cars to get around ireland so the castle location was centrally located. Would definitely recommend.

Trip of a LIFETIME Staying in a castle
What a fabulous vacation the Lisheen Castle offers. We immediately felt comfortable in our home away from home. The tranquility of the setting immediately takes you in and makes you feel like you are truly a part of the surroundings. We received excellent service throughout our stay. The food was of the highest quality. Superb choices were offered for all of our meals both breakfast and dinner. The day tours were very organized and well planned. We were able to make adjustments according to our own personal wishes when the need arouse. The flexibility of the driver and tour guide was greatly appreciated. We had evening entertainment in the castle after dinner several nights. The head cook even gave us hands on tips on how she made some of her signature meals. The sit down morning breakfast was such a delicious and fun way to start our day. The availability of a washer and dryer made for light packing. This was one of the most enjoyable travel experiences we ever had and we look forward to returning to the LISHEEN Castle.

About the host

Hosted by Zane Everard

Host profile image
Lisheen Castle was purchased by my parents Joan and Michael in 1995. The castle was a ruin, close to my fathers dairy farm for all of his life. It was a lifelong dream of his to restore the historic castle to its former glory. The project took five years to complete and was really a labour of love. Lisheen Castle was built in the early 1800's and stood for about 100 years before it was burnt during the Irish War of Independence, all that remained was the stone shell of a building. Restoration began in 1995 and took 5 years to restore it fully.

Where to begin? The castle had been burnt to the ground, only the stone walls were still standing, surprisingly the stone work to the front of the castle was in reasonably good shape. Good shape that is, when you consider that the building had mature trees growing in its interior! The ambitious and expensive project progressed slowly, working with local builder and craftsman Mick Cleary and using photographs donated by the descendants of the castles original family to guide the restoration.

The interior of the castle offered no such guides, there was no photographs of the interior of the castle in existence and there were very few people alive with memories of the castle in its prime. The restoration of the interior of the castle was researched thoroughly by my mother Joan Everard. She laboured tirelessly to ensure that each piece of decor was the perfect choice to compliment the historic nature of the castle while ensuring that the finished project was one of luxury and indulgence to be enjoyed by Lisheen Castles guests for many years to come.
My name is Zane, I am in my mid 40's, I am 1 of 2 sons of Joan & Michael, I returned home from Dublin in 2009 from an architectural career and took over the running of the castle and developed the offering of tour packages to guests, what I like about hosting is showcasing all that Ireland has to offer and knowing that our guests have really enjoyed their stay.

Why they chose this property

Below is an extract from an article written by one of our guests who visited Lisheen Castle.

Driven By A Dream
How one Irish family traversed 200 years to rebuild Lisheen Castle
By John D. Adams
“By degrees the castles are built.”
- Irish proverb

For generations the hulking ruin of Lisheen Castle loomed a kilometer from the Everard family’s 300-acre dairy land in County Tipperary, Ireland. Everard children have played in the shadows of the ruin, perhaps unaware of their exceptional surroundings. But in the 1960s, a young Michael Everard watched more closely as severe Irish seasons slowly consumed the parapets, stone and mortar back into the peaty earth. While working on the family’s farm, young Everard envisioned saving the castle and restoring it to its former glory. Forty years later, alongside his wife, Joan and son Zane, that dream would come to astonishing fruition.

What makes this property unique

Lisheen Castle is in a truly enchanting location with stunning views of rolling Irish hills. The Castle shows itself as a majestic stone castle standing sentry on the landscape.
Inside its interiors offer not only luxury but a character that could not be easily emulated. Each room has its own personality which is reflected in the carefully chosen antique or custom made fixtures and fittings.
The formal reception rooms are impressive and offer a real sense of occasion, while the less formal library and kitchen dining areas create a homely feel in which to relax and unwind.
The location of Lisheen is perfect for a touring holiday, allowing you easy access to all of Ireland's top visitor attractions, and escorted vacations are on offer.
While the castle is offered as a self catering vacation rental or fully escorted touring holiday, it is owned and operated by the Everard family, which ensures a traditional Irish welcome to all guests.
