Or relax by the cabin. Enjoy a walk through the quiet trails of the property. Access to a 500 acre lake is steps away with swimming, fishing, and boating. Two rowboats are available. Vermont state fishing access with ramp is near property. Water-skiing is allowed.
Cozy living room provides spectacular views of this lake. Three bedroom, full kitchen with a gas stove, washer and dryer, dining room, along with an outside picnic area.
"Our days were filled with a lot of fun and sun on the lake. We enjoyed fishing, swimming and just hanging out lakeside. We grilled at night while the kids all played in the great outdoors. It was so peaceful and relaxing. Hope to see you next year!"
I have virtually nothing negative to say about this place, it was wonderful. I do not want my 4 star review to be interpreted as a knock on the property.
The setting is beautiful and secluded, with a cool hilltop property and great lake views. The house is small, but comfortable. We were not lacking for anything, in fact the close quarters inside encouraged us to spend more time outdoors and we really took advantage of the fantastic area with the grill, firepit, and picnic tables.
The lake is great, and even in late August, the water is not too cold. Most of the time is was fairly quiet, with a few other boaters and fishermen out. The surrounding area is beautiful and everything one would need is very accessible. Full size grocery store is about 20 minutes away, general stores, much closer. We made day trips to Burlington, Middlebury, Manchester - to hike Mt. Equinox (an intense, but rewarding hike), and played golf at nearby Neshobe, a nice and affordable course open to the public. Great area, great place.
I will add that the road up to the property is a steep, rutted, gravel road. We bottomed out several normal sedans (Nissan Altima / Hyundai Sonata / Mazda 3) on the way up and down. No damage done, but unless you have an SUV / truck, you will bottom out. The hike down to the lake and boat is fairly steep as well. No problem for us, but for the elderly or people who are not in great shape, it could be pretty difficult. Again, not meant to be a knock, just providing helpful information!
My family and I have been going up to the cabin 7 years now . It's only for a week each year but we wish we could stay longer. The lake and mountain views are amazing. Cruising in a pontoon boat on a lake that feels like your own private lake is priceless. The cabin is always clean when we get there and the owners are outstanding. Any questions or concerns are answered or taken care of immediately. As the years have gone by we have ventured out not too far from the cabin into Vermont and found so many things to do. Bromley Mountain has zip lines, Alpine slides and more. There is also America's oldest quarry in Dorset, Vermont . We would hit the quarry, do some cliff jumping and swimming, then grab something to eat and head back to the cabin to sit by the fire and relax. Now keep in mind, you're in a cabin style house at the top of a mountain. However, you have all the comforts of home: hot water, Directv, a washer & dryer, two refrigerators, etc. I could go on all day talking about the cabin but I will end with this . I served in the Marine Corps and had the opportunity to travel all over the world. I have also spent some time in over thirty of this great nation's states . But somehow I find myself wanting to go up to the cabin every chance I get.
Our August 2012 visit marks our 8th year at the cabin. This has become our second home. It is cozy and comfortable. We invite extended family to spend time with us too. There are daily walks to the lake, swimming, boating, fishing, and relaxing around the camp. We enjoy nightly campfires where we cook dinner and then enjoy each others' company laughing and remembering family times together. We like being able to bring our dogs with us too. They are free to roam and walk the trails with us. The view from the cabin is amazing! We have been lucky enough to watch thunderstorms travel across Lake Hortonia and especially the rainbows after each one! The sunrises are beautiful and peaceful. On the day we leave, we already start counting down the days and planning for our next visit.
The cabin is in a wonderful location with a stunning view but the inside is very worn and could do with a good spring clean. It is not suitable for the elderly or those with any disabilities, especially the two downstairs bedroom.
The most disappointing aspect was that the cabin was on the lake shore and it wasn't "just a few steps" to the shore as written in the description. It is down a 2 very steep and rough tracks.
The link to the directions didn't work for me and when I contacted the owner he just sent the address - no mention of the rough tracks leading to the cabin or the need for a 4 wheel drive car.
