Romantic Somers Bay Boathouse

Bedrooms Studio
Space 600 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Boathouse, 1Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)

This unique waterfront property is he last surviving boathouse with living quarters above it. From the road you will walk down a wooded path to a private incline tram system that will carry you a hundred feet down to a world of lake shore living. When you get to the covered open-air deck, it is complete with a Weber gas BBQ, patio heater, table, chairs and a swing for two. Last year we added a new deck to the front of the Boathouse. Stepping through the sliding glass door you will see that the living level is decorated with fishing motif. In the corner is a wood stove which can be enjoyed from the overstuffed sofa-bed. The kitchen is well-furnished with cooking utensils and all appliances except for a dishwasher. There is an adorable bath with shower only. Up the winder staircase is a loft bedroom with queen bed and step-in closet plus a dormer niche with a bench. The dock and lake level of the property is shared with the property owners. You have your own boat slip and have full access to the dock, beaches, swim area, swim ladders, & canoe, (2) kayaks and a paddle boat.

The boathouse level is totally private. The lower level with the dock and lake area of the property is shared with the property owners and their guests occasionally. You have your own boat slip and have full access to the dock, beaches, swim area and swim ladders. There is plenty of wood provided for having a bonfire in the fire pit. The lakefront also has a romantic footbridge, patio area with picnic table. You are welcome to use the canoe, paddle boat and kayaks which are easily launched from the beach area.

Somers Bay Boathouse is conveniently located: 12 miles west of Bigfork which has live theater and dining; an hour from Glacier Park; 10 miles from historic downtown Kalispel; 5 miles from Lakeside which has a grocery store and dining; great restaurants are within 5 minutes driving toward downtown Somers. The street above the boathouse is part of a biking/walking path which takes you to historic Somers.

About Karen Bach

Earl and Karen are a middle aged couple with 2 older teenagers. Our daughter is in college and will be working in Portland this summer and our son will be graduating from high school. We have owned the property for 15 years. Earl began remodeling the boathouse in 2003 and finished it in 2005. We thought we would use it more than we did and decided rather than have it stay empty, we would share it with others. If we had a motto, it would be 'the more the merrier.'

Why Karen Bach chose Montana

Quiet, private setting, right on the water

What makes this cabin unique

Where to start...the way the property is set up, it feels like we don't hardly have any neighbors, which attributes to the privacy. The view is gorgeous and changes constantly. There are many birds/water fowl, including bald eagles (though they don't come around as much once the osprey move in for the summer). Even though there is so much to do in the area, many guests claim they find it hard to leave the boathouse.

Perfect boathouse getaway

  • 5 of 5

Karen and Earl gave us the wonderful experience of staying at their boathouse. The location is perfect - close to groceries and a great restaurant (Tamarack), yet secluded as it is the only boathouse in the area.

Beautiful 180 degree views of the lake from the boathouse, which had everything we needed - canoe, 2 kayaks, a paddle boat, and a dock to fish off of. We caught 19 fish in 3 days.

TIP: there is a visible island from the boathouse that is a bit father than it appears - took us over two overs to round trip it on the paddle boat.

Wouldn't change a thing about this place or these hosts, and will gladly return!

Incredible views!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 loved every minute of our stay at the boathouse. It was perfect for our two girls as they could swim, canoe, paddle boat and fish all day. We were able to keep an eye on them from anywhere in the house. They loved the fire pit and making s'mores. We have wonderful memories and can't thank Karen enough for mailing our daughter's boots back home to us once she found them. The owners were very friendly and took care of all of our needs. We would recommend the boathouse without hesitation. It was a great base point for traveling through Glacier and the Bigfork area. Thank you for all of your hospitality!

Beautiful setting but has issues

  • 2 of 5

This is a wonderful location right on the water. It's a very unique property with the funicular ride down to the boathouse. Gorgeous setting and decor is very cute with a fish/pinecone theme. Unfortunately, we found several issues during our stay. The property is not maintained/cleaned very well. The ceiling fan did not work, making it very warm and stuffy in the unit. There is a small A/C unit in the upstairs window that we used only after cleaning the filter that was caked with dust and dirt. The portable fans were in similar condition which we also cleaned to not blow dust everywhere. The furniture seldom gets moved for cleaning as dust and dead bugs were thick under these. The same can be said for the tops of cabinets, appliances, etc. There are no screens on any of the slider doors or kitchen door or upstairs bedroom window. We would leave them open as we were told to do by the owner because they said that there were no mosquitos however there were plenty of yellow jackets and wasps that would come in during the day and mosquitos and bugs at night. The hot water runs out very's good for about an 8 minute shower. We also had a rodent problem while we were there with lots of mouse droppings and then actually having to kill a mouse one night while making dinner as it scurried into the living room area. The owner’s response was to bring a couple mouse traps for us to set and use. The owner never checked back in with us and the traps did absolutely no good. Most of the droppings were up in the loft bedroom area. Quite unsettling. Privacy was a serious issue for us since the owners also rent a guest quarters at their house and those guests come down the funicular to use the boat dock area. Since there are no blinds on any of the windows or sliders/doors, as they get off the funicular they look right into the boathouse. If people are on the dock, they look right into the living area. Although it varied each day, the guests were coming down from around 10 a.m. and stayed until between 5- 9 p.m. and ranged from 2 to 8 people every day, so this is not a romantic, secluded, private place at all. Unfortunately we would not recommend this property which is really quite sad as it is a beautiful location with such potential.

Owner's Response: I am really sorry about the issues which you brought up. I will ask our housekeeper to check on the items which were found to be less than tidy. Unfortunately, the fans and air conditioner have not been items which are on her check-off list, I will see that they get added. The ceiling fan is a problem which we have been aware of but have had trouble getting the part for. We have decided to change it altogether for next season so it should no longer be a problem. Living in the country, sadly, mice occasionally show up, but when they are caught in traps quickly, they don't usually become a problem. Exterminators can't do anything unless there is an infestation, which there is not. Our cat used to take care of them, but she has gotten old and lazy. Guess it's time for a new cat? This is the first time we have had a complaint about not having screens. We used to have screens on all the doors and windows, but almost everyone would leave them open, so the last time we had the windows cleaned we just left them off. I will see about having them put back up. Finally, our Guest Quarters guests are given day privliges (10-5) for the dock area only. It is for our guests only, not their friends, but there is the occasional guest who will take advantage of this rule. It would be nice to be made aware of an issue like this so we can deal with the problem. I am sorry you felt like you had no privacy. I wish I knew more, but this was one of the rare occasions when I was on a trip during a guest's stay. My husband is a nice man, but customer service is not his forte. I will do my best to solve the issues which are solveable. My most sincere appologies. Sincerely, Karen Bach

A little piece of relaxing heaven.

  • 5 of 5

This was a great time for our family of 5 to have fun and relax. We were able to play with the kayaks, canoe, and paddle boat as well as sit by the campfire and relax. We loved watching the eagles and fishing off the docks. My kids loved to swim and feed the geese. We grilled out every day and sat by the campfire every night. It was a great time for our family to reconnect!
