Relaxation at the River's Edge

Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 12)

Sitting on the River’s Edge this luxurious private home features a master suite with private patio, natural rock wall in bedroom and in-room double spa. It also has a second master suite with in-room bathroom featuring a double spa. Additional features include a living room, sitting room and second patio with outdoor BBQ providing room to stretch out. The full kitchen and dining room provide ample space for an extended stay. Two king suites with in-room spa, a double queen room and a children’s attic room with four single beds, all with cable TVs, complete this special retreat. River’s Edge is a sumptuous getaway for special family occasions.

This beautiful unit is also in an historic location. In 1849, on this site, James Savage built a store made of logs. It supported gold miners who explored the Merced River. For his protection from and to gain influence with local tribes, Savage married several Indian women. After Savage died, one of his Indian widows guided John Hite, a poor prospector, up the South Fork of the Merced to find gold that made Hite a millionaire.

Come see what awaits you at the River's Edge!

Lovely stay

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed in a number of VRBO large-size homes, and this one is not standard. The description was quite accurate (water in this fork of the Merced River had spring run-off) and the house is lovely, but it is really run by a nearby hotel and therefore is missing some things you've come to expect from VRBO homes, such as a printed information sheet (e.g., when is garbage collected, where by buy groceries), condiments left by previous renters (not even salt and pepper), but also no damage deposit or cleaning fee, no request to strip beds and start the laundry! Service is provided daily by the hotel people -- we didn't ask for room services though they were offered, but they did provide more soap, towels, etc. Entry is handicap-accessible and master suite is on main floor. There is no washer or dryer, no Internet, no cell phone, limited menu of cable TV stations. It's nearly as close as you can get while staying outside the park. Rates quite reasonable for value and space. We were quite satisfied.

not quite what we expected

  • 3 of 5

While we were happy overall with the house, I was a bit surprised by a couple of things.

For instance, the kitchen/dining was missing key items I assumed would be provided and didn't pack.

-A cutting board-a serrated edge knife -the knives provided are so dull they wouldn't cut anything.

-a roll of paper towels and/or napkins

-enough utensils for everyone. It said it sleeps 16 but there was only enough cutlery for 8! Most of the rest was broken or missing.

-The picture on the website shows a very nice BBQ however, the one at the house was not the same quality and had no heat controls-just on and off so everything burned

--Lastly, the website states "All homes have private access to the south fork of the Merced River" If you read that and look at the photos, it looks like you're right on the river. However- the water below the deck was actually a stagnant, mossy green trickle of water and the Merced River is actually across HWY 41! We did run across the highway and swim in the Merced River along with everyone else who stopped and parked on the side of the road to swim. It was hardly "private access"

The rest of the house was great and we enjoyed our stay.

Perfect setting on the river for large group

  • 5 of 5

This was a multi-family trip and the size of the house (4 bedrooms plus large kitchen table with plenty of chairs!) was the perfect fit for us. The rock ledge retained and made a part of the house in front room, main bathroom and master bedroom downstairs was pretty cool, but it was the two lovely patios out back along the river that puts the icing on the cake! It seems like a long way from the park, but then again it's nice to be outside the park and away from the crowds in a very nice house of your own. We very much enjoyed our stay here and would definitely stay again. Was well stocked with all amenities (only had to pick up salt and pepper and coffee filters), and was very clean. The only thing missing was an oven mitt! Main bathroom downstairs with skylight, double shower heads, copper sinks and rock wall was very cool indeed! I highly recommend The River House for families and/or large groups as it accommodates them well, plus allows private space too. Thank you!
