The Wilderness House - Rustic Luxury in the Desert

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

The Wilderness House is set in one of the most stunning areas of the American Southwest. This house is completely off the grid with no one in site in this unspoilt private canyon, it feels like you are a world away from everything, yet you are still close enough to the Arches and Canyonlands National Parks as well as the Colorado river and the excitement of Moab.

Beautiful hikes are on your doorstep. And, you can relax at the end of the day with beautiful red rock and mountain scenery and to the sound of rushing water below.

Preparing this description is quite difficult, because the Wilderness House is indescribable. You will be speechless too.

If you need to quiet the chatter and reconnect with nature, then this is the place.

Terry Edwards

Hello Neal

Terry Edwards asked that I drop you a note regarding The Wilderness House.

I will be returning for my 5th stay at the house the first week of June 2014.

I can not say enough good things about the house and working with Terry on setting up your accommodations. She has always been a pleasure to work with and is very responsive to any of your needs. She is also very good about returning your security deposit right away after your departure.

The house is completely private and very remote. The house sits perked on the edge of the mountain that makes up one side of the canyon walls. You drive a couple of miles into the canyon to get to the house and go through a locked gate which keeps anyone and everyone from entering the canyon except for the guest staying at the house. As you get far enough into the canyon you will begin to see the house sitting perfectly up the canyon wall waiting for your arrival. The only other people you will ever see once in the canyon are the possible guest of the vacation house further up into the canyon ... Buy several times that I have been there we see NO ONE the whole time we are there. The high clearance vehicle Terry mentioned is a MUST! Just a good SUV is needed.

As Terry mentioned, it is about 25 minutes into Moab for anything you might need. The house has a fully equipped kitchen so after several very disappointing meals in town we tend to buy groceries to stock the refrigerator and make meals at the house.

As far as the night skies and stargazing ... you can not pick a better location. If the sky is clear of clouds at night you will see stars like you've never seen before. I live in Dallas where you're lucky to see one or two stars at night. There are plenty of spots around the house to plant a lounge chair and enjoy just looking at the night sky. We've even slept out when the weather permits. If you are looking to go in June you should really enjoy the cool evenings because of the altitude. Check to see if there is a meteor shower scheduled for when you are there. It's pretty spectacular to be there during one of the yearly showers.

Also it gets pretty warm in June so you will be able to enjoy the luxury of having your own pool just out your door. It's big enough for a couple of rafts to just float t

Amazing stay!!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful views! We went to Moab for jeeping and the road to the house was spot on — crossing streams and climbing up trails! We were able to see the Indian drawings on the canyon walls too, just a short hike down from the house. Teens immediately found a little cave/ cut out in the canyon just above the house! Regarding other reviews yes it’s a bit dusty but it’s Moab... everything is dusty! I would caution to conserve water as we did run out on the 4th day. Our fault, we were doing lots of laundry! Once you come to this house you will be more then willing to conserve water- it’s truly amazing!

Not all it was cracked up to be.

Hot tub was not warm the 1st night (paid extra for hot tub) house needs an extreme deep clean. Beds/bedding needs updated, whole property is run down. Noisy generator could be heard even indoors. Loved the seclusion, beautiful views and serenity.

Perfect setting

  • 5 of 5

The house is in a perfect setting to unplug and relax. No cell service or internet is really refreshing. Nice people to deal with and reasonably priced. The house does suffer a little from deferred maintenance (a shame because the house deserves to be kept up) but it wasn’t a problem.

We will definitely stay again.

Outstanding! Superb location!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here exceeded our expectations. The house location was private and the view was incredible. A short hike down the road resulted in some of the largest petroglyph panels we've ever seen (and one of our party is a self-proclaimed petroglyph expert!). We used the hot tub each night and marveled at the stars. We were treated with a full moon which lit up the private canyons around us with a surreal light.

The interior of the house was cozy. The evenings were cooler than we expected - luckily there was a large fireplace in the main area. We used the one in the master suite as well. Super cozy and rustic feeling! I was a bit concerned about what the beds would be like (twins pushed together to create kings); however, a Tempur-Pedic style pad was on top and the result was a very comfortable bed!! We cooked every night and we were able to find all of the utensils / pans we required for our meals.

The pool house (additional bedroom) has its own entrance so provided a private suite for the other couple staying with us. We're early risers and they sleep in, so that couldn't have worked out better.

The view and privacy (after the crazy-business of downtown Moab) are priceless. We enjoyed every moment of our stay at The Wilderness House. Thank you!!!

Stunning, Amazing Property

  • 5 of 5

Our group just returned (stayed the last week of March, 2018)from the Wilderness House. What a great time we had! Part of the adventure was driving through the beautiful canyon to get there. My Subaru Outback made the commute just fine. For being off the grid, the house was very comfortable and there was always warm water. The hot tub was HOT, which our group thoroughly enjoyed. Working with Mark and Adam was easy and were patient in answering all of our many questions. I loved that the kitchen was well stocked(TWO refrigerators), the BBQ was ready to go, and they even had laundry soap! We spent our days adventuring around the area and slept so well in the house. To make a few suggestions, perhaps a bit more cleaning of the cobwebs on the walls and rafters. (But who really cares with the gorgeous view!?) Note: They ask that you pack out your own trash and recycle. We brought the trash to Ken's Lake down the road. We were unable to pack out the recycle as we couldn't fit it all, as we were traveling from out of state with all our camping gear. (Sorry!) I also really appreciated that the rooms were well spaced and that a large group could fit comfortably. Thank you for all the great memories, the relaxation, the canyon and mountain views. Seriously, the pictures do NOT do this place justice. Come see for yourself! We will be back!

Peaceful, quiet, unique. It is not clearly stated, but the 3rd bedroom is in a separate but nearby building (pool house).
