Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

The Wilderness House is set in one of the most stunning areas of the American Southwest. This house is completely off the grid with no one in site in this unspoilt private canyon, it feels like you are a world away from everything, yet you are still close enough to the Arches and Canyonlands National Parks as well as the Colorado river and the excitement of Moab.

Beautiful hikes are on your doorstep. And, you can relax at the end of the day with beautiful red rock and mountain scenery and to the sound of rushing water below.

Preparing this description is quite difficult, because the Wilderness House is indescribable. You will be speechless too.

If you need to quiet the chatter and reconnect with nature, then this is the place.

Hello Neal

Terry Edwards asked that I drop you a note regarding The Wilderness House.

I will be returning for my 5th stay at the house the first week of June 2014.

I can not say enough good things about the house and working with Terry on setting up your accommodations. She has always been a pleasure to work with and is very responsive to any of your needs. She is also very good about returning your security deposit right away after your departure.

The house is completely private and very remote. The house sits perked on the edge of the mountain that makes up one side of the canyon walls. You drive a couple of miles into the canyon to get to the house and go through a locked gate which keeps anyone and everyone from entering the canyon except for the guest staying at the house. As you get far enough into the canyon you will begin to see the house sitting perfectly up the canyon wall waiting for your arrival. The only other people you will ever see once in the canyon are the possible guest of the vacation house further up into the canyon ... Buy several times that I have been there we see NO ONE the whole time we are there. The high clearance vehicle Terry mentioned is a MUST! Just a good SUV is needed.

As Terry mentioned, it is about 25 minutes into Moab for anything you might need. The house has a fully equipped kitchen so after several very disappointing meals in town we tend to buy groceries to stock the refrigerator and make meals at the house.

As far as the night skies and stargazing ... you can not pick a better location. If the sky is clear of clouds at night you will see stars like you've never seen before. I live in Dallas where you're lucky to see one or two stars at night. There are plenty of spots around the house to plant a lounge chair and enjoy just looking at the night sky. We've even slept out when the weather permits. If you are looking to go in June you should really enjoy the cool evenings because of the altitude. Check to see if there is a meteor shower scheduled for when you are there. It's pretty spectacular to be there during one of the yearly showers.

Also it gets pretty warm in June so you will be able to enjoy the luxury of having your own pool just out your door. It's big enough for a couple of rafts to just float t

Unique

  • 4 of 5

Peaceful, quiet, unique. It is not clearly stated, but the 3rd bedroom is in a separate but nearby building (pool house).

Gorgeous views and peaceful surroundings

  • 4 of 5

We loved staying here. Being right in the mountains was awesome. We literally walked out the door and began hiking! Amazing hieroglyphs just minutes from the house. We stayed here during a VERY busy weekend in Moab. In town there were people everywhere but we enjoyed a quiet, peaceful environment with no disruptions or distractions from others while staying in The Wilderness House. We paid for the use of the hot tub but it was having some problems so it wasn't available. We were promptly refunded the money for hot tub use. Very easy to work with. We would definately stay there again and loved everything about it except the cleanliness could use a bit of work. Of course there is dust that comes in from being in an desert environment - that is understandable but we did find some hairballs in places that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in awhile. General cleaning could be improved but it wasn't too bad. We would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Dear David and Marcia, Thank you for your thoughtful review! Our housekeeper assures you that the hairballs come from the rug, which is a bit of a shedder, but she and her helper will redouble their efforts to deal with it......... So glad that you had a nice relaxing time, and we hope to see you again! The Wilderness House Team.

very interesting place

  • 4 of 5

very unique place. beautiful valley with Indian writings on walls. access through dirt road with two river crossings (stay left at first and right at second river). it was very peaceful overall but there is a person living in a RV in the valley below who runs a generator all the time so there is a near constant sound. it would be much more peaceful without them. the hot tub is nice but the pool and hot tub could use a paint job to make them more attractive. it is fairly rustic but everything works. the upstairs shower is nice. there is a funny smell in the downstairs bedroom and bathroom. very relaxing.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments, Michae! - It's always helpful to have direct input....... We shall be doing the painting in November as soon as we start in on our regular annual maintenance , and as for the funny smell downstairs, I believe it was a little harvest mouse that got in somehow from outside and died in the walls.....poor little guy, but it happens. Re the RV generator, we can't stop the owner using it, but we CAN try to persuade him to house it in a solid shed to cut down the noise! All the best from The Wilderness House Crew.

Rare place, beautiful view, we had a lovely time.

Wilderness House was a perfect place for our family vacation. Dinners on the patio, cocktails in the jacuzzi, well appointed home with fine craftsmanship. Could use a bit more vacuuming and window cleaning.

Owner's Response: Thank you! Your comments much appreciated, and suggestions passed on ! It IS a problem keeping the desert dust out of the house - whenever there's a breeze it blows into the house somehow, and into the swimming pool too, so even if the cleaning crew have been in the day before, a pristine state is hard to maintain..... But we are all very glad that you enjoyed your holiday with us..... Best wishes, Terry Edwards, Manager.

Always amazing!

  • 5 of 5

This is the fourth or fifth time I have stayed at The Wilderness House. I brought another family with me this time and they stayed in the smaller Casita. Both houses are awesome. I think the comment of one of my invited guests sums it up. "You told me about this place, and I looked at a lot of pictures online, but I just had no idea it would be like this. This place is amazing!"
