Sands Island is a private, 32-acre island, surrounded by thousands of acres of undeveloped marshes, island beaches and meandering natural water trails. A two-bedroom cottage is the lone structure on the island. Although only ten minutes by boat from historic Swansboro, North Carolina, this quiet, peaceful refuge seems a world away.
The cottage was built in 1997 using old-fashioned craftsmanship with locally milled pine floors, walls and ceiling and cedar shakes on the roof. It is comfortably furnished and environmentally friendly with solar-powered electricity to run lighting. The water heater, stove and refrigerator are powered by gas. The cottage has two private bedrooms, two bathrooms ( one inside, one accessible from outside), a complete kitchen with dining area, a living room with a wood-burning stove, and a screened-in porch. The cottage is situated so that it catches the cool breezes coming off the ocean and allows guests to experience the most beautiful sunsets. It can comfortably accommodate a family of four to six or two couples.

Sands Island, aka “Ski Beach”, is one of many small protected islands along the coast of North Carolina. It is the only one in this area with a rental cottage available. The cottage sits 15 feet above the water, with a panoramic view of waving sea oats, rolling sand dunes and watery wilderness. Thousands of acres of undeveloped pristine marshes and waterways provide abundant opportunities to fish and view wildlife. If you have children, this is a wonderful place for them to enjoy. There are no roads or vehicles on the island, only footpaths. Despite its remote and unspoiled atmosphere, Sands Island is only a half a mile or 10 minutes by boat from the conveniences and attractions of the village of Swansboro. The island is entirely private except for occasional boaters who may visit the beach located on the other side of the island on weekends.
My husband and I and our 2 sons (3 & 5) came up for a long weekend to celebrate Mother's Day weekend. We were greeted by Captain Tim and I just can't tell you how wonderful he and Jane are! The cottage was perfect. I was worried about the lack of A/C but it was perfectly cool with a wonderful breeze that whistled through the house. One night was chilly and we built a fire in the wood stove. We played games every night and actually RESTED! The boat was great! We explored all the little islands in the area, found tons of sharks teeth (the boys were beyond excited to find 35!) and we did a lot of fishing. In the afternoons we would go to the adorable downtown area and grab dinner, ice cream and listen to music.
This place is simply magical and we will be back many times over again. I'm just so grateful that Tim & Jane let us be a part of something so special.
What a fantastic place to visit! We enjoyed the privacy of the island. The cottage was the perfect size and the lack of air conditioning, even in August, was a non-issue! The screened in porch, with 4 rocking chairs, was the perfect place to sit and enjoy the always beautiful sunsets. We kayaked with the dolphins (with babies!). The boat was a huge plus to visit Bear Island and go to dinner every evening in the quaint Historic Swansboro. The peach fritters at Yana's are not to be missed, we had them several mornings for breakfast! There were local musicians on Sunday evenings at the Pavilion. We had delicious ice cream at Bake Bottle Brew. There are neat little gift shops to explore, along with the Swansboro Ducks waddling about the town. Tim and Jane were amazing, answering our million questions and making sure we were having a great adventure! We had cell phone coverage (for those who just can't do without the connection!) And we never missed having a TV! We hunted for shark's teeth at Shark Teeth Island, found over 45 of them. Would highly recommend this place, can't wait to go back!!
Jane and Capt. Tim were so nice! They went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and entertained. The house is adorable and there's plenty of exploring to do via skiff, canoes, and kayaks - all included! We ate crabs, caught flounders and enjoyed our family vaycay thoroughly.
Upon reaching the island, we were beyond excited. The house is cozy and the breeze will take your breath away. Speaking figuratively and literally. No need for AC if you throw the doors open. The island is massive and the views are spectacular. Everything about this property is picturesque and the wildlife is abundant. Great place to recharge the mind and body. We fished most of the time. No real luck with a monster but the variety of fish is insane. Highly recommended for a small family or couple. Missing it already.
Sands Island is the perfect retreat for a small family or group of couples! The entire island is yours to enjoy and explore. In the evenings listen for owls hooting in the trees nearby, deer walking through the marsh and watch the most amazing sunsets from a rocking chair on your own personal screened in porch! A great, peaceful retreat any time of year with the wood stove to keep warm in the cooler weather and the nice breezes and water to keep you cool when it is warm! I've visited this house a handful of times and will go back as many times as I can!
Clean, well maintained cabin in tranquil, secluded spot. Capt. Tim is a gracious and helpful host. Close enough to restaurants and antiques, ideally situated for nature lovers. Can't wait to go back! The listing and pictures are accurate, I highly recommend it.
