Overview

About the property

Cottage with 19' motor boat, 2 Bedrooms + Den ( fold out sofa), 1.5+ Baths

Sands Island is a private, 32-acre island, surrounded by thousands of acres of undeveloped marshes, island beaches and meandering natural water trails. A two-bedroom cottage is the lone structure on the island. Although only ten minutes by boat from historic Swansboro, North Carolina, this quiet, peaceful refuge seems a world away.

The cottage was built in 1997 using old-fashioned craftsmanship with locally milled pine floors, walls and ceiling and cedar shakes on the roof. It is comfortably furnished and environmentally friendly with solar-powered electricity to run lighting. The water heater, stove and refrigerator are powered by gas. The cottage has two private bedrooms, two bathrooms ( one inside, one accessible from outside), a complete kitchen with dining area, a living room with a wood-burning stove, and a screened-in porch. The cottage is situated so that it catches the cool breezes coming off the ocean and allows guests to experience the most beautiful sunsets. It can comfortably accommodate a family of four to six or two couples.

Your rental includes a MOTOR BOAT, CANOES, AND KAYAKS for your personal use, as well as parking and dockage on the mainland. You can tour the local waters, visit nearby Hammocks Beach for swimmming and surfing, or visit the beaches of Emerald Isle.

What makes this cottage unique

Sands Island, aka “Ski Beach”, is one of many small protected islands along the coast of North Carolina. It is the only one in this area with a rental cottage available. The cottage sits 15 feet above the water, with a panoramic view of waving sea oats, rolling sand dunes and watery wilderness. Thousands of acres of undeveloped pristine marshes and waterways provide abundant opportunities to fish and view wildlife. If you have children, this is a wonderful place for them to enjoy. There are no roads or vehicles on the island, only footpaths. Despite its remote and unspoiled atmosphere, Sands Island is only a half a mile or 10 minutes by boat from the conveniences and attractions of the village of Swansboro. The island is entirely private except for occasional boaters who may visit the beach located on the other side of the island on weekends.

Great time!

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay. Loved taking the boat over to Bear Island and around to visit some of the sandbars. Saw tons of wild life including dolphin! It got a bit warm when the breeze died down, but we were fine with the little fans that were there.

The view is fantastic, we spent a ton of time relaxing on the screened porch and paddling over to the little beaches near by.

If you're a planner like me it's nice to know things like toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, tin foil, Saran Wrap as well as some things a like salt and pepper, old bay were there already.

Simply beautiful!!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a nice stay at Sands Island and hope to return again! The property is exactly as described with gorgeous views and ocean breezes, as well as kayaks and canoes to explore surrounding areas. We overpacked for our long weekend, as some of the gear (first aid kit, lanterns, kitchen towels and such were already there, and we really didn't need so MUCH stuff!) We brought my huge golden retriever who ended up loving the water, but Captain Tim warned me in advance of cactus and oyster bed dangers to paws. Two eleven year old boys literally had the time of their lives and fished and crabbed and kayaked the entire weekend - just the perfect escape from the world! My only regret was not asking the marina guys for help with the boat, as the tides and wind and other boats caught me off guard in parking there. Don't be too proud to ask for help... Captain Tim is the most patient man I've ever met and could not have been more helpful and accommodating!!! Thank you for sharing your paradise!

RELAXING!

  • 5 of 5

Exactly as shown in the pictures. We spent an anniversary weekend at the cottage and it was exactly what we were looking for. Luxury, no. But if you are considering the cottage you are looking for something else. This is it. Good breezes, privacy, and views. Really as relaxing as anywhere could be. We cooked in a few nights and the propane stove and oven work great. Paddled the kayaks. Took the skiff over to hammocks beach. Caught and steamed some crabs. Tim was great to deal with and incredibly knowledgeable on the property and all the surrounding waters. Other boaters (motor and paddle) use the island for its beach on the ICW and to hike around a bit, especially on the weekend, so you'll see a few people, but they stayed away from the cottage (most I don't think even know its there).

If you aren't comfortable boating, navigating the channel to/from swansboro/ICW and the low tides in the marshes, this might be a little stressful. But if you are, stop thinking and just go for it. Totally unique and naturally gorgeous setting.

We will be back.

Great guys weekend

  • 5 of 5

House is the only one on the island. Having the boat was great to come and go when we wanted to fish. Had pretty much everything we needed. Charcoal grill and basic pots and pans. (Take your own charcoal). Tim the owner was great to work with. He stopped in or ran into us a couple times over the weekend on the water and was always very nice and willing to help with anything We had 5 guys in our group and we used an air mattress therefore we didn't have to share the pullout or the other beds. However, the place could sleep more especially if there are smaller kids or children and willing to share beds. Bring your own sheets pillow cases and towels. There is limited electric because it runs on solar. That may explain why there wasn't a toaster. We had no problem powering and charging our cell phones and the lights. Propane for heat, stove and refrig. Nice screened in porch to sit and relax and hang our hammock on the porch. About 200 yard walk to reach the beach on the opposite side of the island. You could also just drive the boat around to the other side and anchor to the beach if you have lots of things to carry. Nice beach to sit and relax and clean. Hard sandy and clean bottom on the north side of the island facing inside the main inter coastal waterway. Kayaks and canoes were nice. Would recommend you bring your own ski style life vests if you don't want to wear the basic orange coast guard approved style. The cottage was clean and the seclusion was nice. We caught crabs in the crab pots and had them to eat as well as the fish we caught. We only caught a couple keeper fish (red and a flounder). However, I would attribute this to our limited experience of saltwater fishing and knowing where to fish as well as the tidal affects on the fish and there movements. If you are an inexperienced boater than I would recommend staying off the water with the boat during low tide. Otherwise you just have to look for the fast moving water and always go slow in any of the marsh areas or channels. Follow the markers when in the main channels and watch the paths of other boats. Overall this would be a great getaway for a similar guys weekend and even better for a family. Swimming, fishing, looking for snails and shells, walking on the beach, canoeing, kayaking as well as putting out the crab pots etc...

As I mentioned earlier the owners were great and I would certainly consider returning
