About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-6)

Located in south central Alaska, on the shores of Cottonwood Lake in the heart of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, Alaska Loon’s Nest Cabin Rental is centrally located between Palmer and Wasilla on seven secluded acres, yet within minutes of town and attractions. The cabin is only 40 minutes from Anchorage and three hours from Denali National Park. Come stay in a truly Alaskan log cabin on a pristine trout-filled floatplane sized lake, surrounded by the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountain Ranges.

Sip your coffee while listening to the call of the loon echo across the pristine waters of Cottonwood Lake. Or, sit on the dock and watch the trout jump in the evening glow of a long summer night as an eagle glides directly above. Better yet, wet a line with one of our trout poles and catch a rainbow trout for dinner. Explore the lake in the paddleboat, or kayaks (lifejackets provided) or just trout fish with gear provided. Take a swim off our dock and soak in those warm summer days on the floating dock. Roast marshmallows and share stories around the lakeside fire pit. Relax and let time stand still!

Enjoy a place where time stands still, and breathtaking beauty abounds!

About Ron Zmuda

As a sourdough (lifelong Alaskan), Ron has a deep love for Alaska and the outdoors. When not selling real estate, Ron loves fishing, hunting, and sharing his tales of Alaskan adventure. A “jack-of-all-trades”, Ron built the family home and has kept the family homestead cabin in tip-top shape for over forty years. Ron has a deep love for this great state, and would love to help you plan your Alaskan vacation!

Why Ron Zmuda chose Gateway

Alaska Loon's Nest has been my family treasure since 1962. This original homesteader’s cabin was built in the 1950’s, and has been tenderly maintained by my family for over 45 years. The cabin features richly hued knotty pine throughout, with modern upgrades, while maintaining its original Alaskan history and charm. The cabin front offers expansive views of the lake and two mountain ranges, including the Hatcher's Pass area directly across from the cabin. Two decks, one lakeside and one with a gas BBQ overlooking the perennial flower beds and garden area, add to your enjoyment of this “one-of-a-kind” Alaskan setting!

What makes this cabin unique

Come enjoy a one-of-a-kind Alaskan setting while being within minutes of major attractions and conveniences. You'll soon discover why Cottonwood Lake is still a 'jewel' in the chain of lakes in the area, and why Alaska Loon's Nest seems like it's nestled in a world of its own. Watch eagles fly directly overhead on their daily flight path, visiting moose and fox, waterfowl, trumpeter swans, and my favorite, the loon. Take an early morning or late evening paddle around the lake as the loons' eerie calls echo across the water, and you'll understand why time seemingly stands still at Alaska Loon's Nest! Please note that the owner's home is next to the cabin rental.

Relax in a SUPER CUTE CABIN and take in the AMAZING VIEWS!

  • 5 of 5

Hosts Cindy and Ron were great! We checked in very late Saturday night and Cindy greeted us with her 2 very happy Labs. They showed us the Loons Nest cabin, which was welcoming and charmingly decorated! The cabin had everything you would need, from a well-stocked spice cabinet to coffee, butter, mayo, mustard and other refrigerated items needed to mix up a quick marinade. Below was a cellar with a washer and dryer and laundry soap. So seriously you only need to bring your food items, shampoo, conditioner!

The picture window views were spectacular, we could literally sit there ALL DAY!

The common area had an awesome fire-pit and the flowers in the garden were so beautiful. We spent our first full day fishing from the dock with Ellie May, a fun pup with a fetish for lake rocks (by the way don't encourage the rock a stick instead). We also took a fun fishing ride on the paddle boat and spotted a bald eagle. Our last day we did some sightseeing and hiking at Thunderbird Falls, we arrived back to the cabin to be greeted by Ellie May and Ron. We hung out on the porch had a glass of wine and talked about Majestic Alaska :).

One thing I really wanted to see was a moose and while cooking breakfast on the morning of our departure I looked out the kitchen window and behold a Mama Moose and her baby! WOW so very cool!!!!

What a fantastic way to end our Fabulous Alaskan vacation!

Thank you, Ron and Cindy for your hospitality!

P.S. Ron, thank you for the awesome salmon dip and sharing your recipe!

Peace and quiet, all that you need

  • 5 of 5

We concluded our three week trip to Alaska with a stay at Ron's family cabin. It reminded me of my parents' lakefront cabin in Michigan that we had to sell a year ago. As we walked in, the memories came flooding back. The wood paneled walls, the huge lakefront views and decor indicative of the area really was comforting! We were welcomed with Ron's famous salmon spread and crackers, which was delicious as well as thoughtful. We enjoyed it while unpacking. All in all we had absolutely everything we needed for our visit. We had a lot of rain so we didn't use the decks, dock or kayaks but we were warm and dry and very comfortable. I would definitely recommend Ron's cabin!

We had a great time at this beautiful cabin on Cottonwood Lake. We fished right from the Dock and caught some nice trout which we are for dinner. We had 4 in our party and we were very comfortable. We enjoyed the owners Ron and Cindy.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was exactly what we had hoped it would be. Ron and Cindy were great hosts along with Ellie Mae and Raven, their dogs. Made us feel right at home since we were missing our fur babies. I could sit for hours in the porch just taking in all the beautiful scenery. My husband and I were even able to take the paddle boat out and go fishing on the lake. Much to his surprise I was the one that caught 4 Rainbow Trout! Wonderful vacation!

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

Our family of three stayed at the Lakefront Log cabin 8/1 -8/4. This was truly a beautiful property. We enjoyed using the paddleboat and the kayak on the lake and would loved to have explored it more. The log cabin had everything we needed and more. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the owner and shown around. They had made Salmon dip for us and it was delicious!! This was a great location for us because of things we had planned in Talkeetna and Matanuska Glacier. I only wish we could have stayed longer. We would definitely stay here again if we get the chance to come back to Alaska. Thanks from the McGuire family for your generous hospitality.
