About Robert Winquist
Robert Winquist has had extensive experience both as an educator and entrepreneur. He has a PhD in Higher Education from the University of Iowa and was a University Professor, Vice President and administrator for many years. From 1993-2007 he served as the President and CEO of Vending Supply Inc., a Nevada corporation that designed and printed and distributed one billion machine vended children's stickers and temporary tattoos. Robert is a Minister of the Universal Life church, who performs weddings on the beach. He has four beautiful sons and daughters and is an avid fisherman. Robert owns a ranch in the Sierra Laguna mountains, east of Pescadero, and enjoys taking guests on tours of the area.
Robert Winquist purchased this House in 2004
Why Robert Winquist chose El Pescadero
Growing up in a family that loved camping on the Baja, I always knew I wanted to retire here. Somewhere that was easy to get to, natural and pristine. I drove the entire peninsula many times looking for the perfect spot. Whenever I drove through Pescadero I couldn't stop smiling because it felt so right. I honestly believe this is one of those powerful spots on the planet that attracts good energy. Robert's Place is a gathering spot for friends and family that we are happy to share with others.
What makes this House unique
Surprisingly, one of the daily benefits I enjoy is driving the single lane dirt farm road that leads 1 mile out to the highway. The experience of slowing way down to enjoy the lushness of the crops and the pace at which they grow is its own reward. The standard of courtesy and kindness exchanged between very different types of people as we pull over to make room for each other is a genuine old Mexico experience. Another hidden benefit which reveals the relaxing approach to living here is Whale Watching - Pescadero Style. You can sit for hours watching whales breach and spout as they swim past in front of the house. On a calm day it is possible to kayak out and sit quietly as a pod of whales passes within a hundred feet of you. Sometimes they linger for days outside of the breaking waves near shore. If you are the adventurous type, borrow a mask and fins and swim out! Welcome to Whale Watching - Pescadero Style! Vacationing here is like living in a nature sanctuary. Egrets feed in the tide pools. Fishermen cast from shore for Spanish Mackerel and Rooster fish at dawn. And bonfires on the beach are a tradition. This is the Baja I knew as a child.

Great spot for a family reunion!
This place deserves a detailed review because it is different. If you enjoy cottage life then you will enjoy Dr. Robert's Oasis. Relaxing, comfortable, but with some minor glitches. The appliances worked but could use some upgrading. The bathrooms had minor leaks, but not a real problem. The WiFi was spotty, in fact it didn't work at all for 5 days over Christmas which made us kind of happy. We could always get it at Baja Beans a few minutes drive away. I took my family of 20 for Christmas and my 80th birthday. We originally had booked for 25 and were very glad that we only had 20. While it could have slept more, it would have been too crowded.
The pluses are: clean comfortable beds, the general relaxed "feel", the beach (gorgeous! )the sunsets (spectacular!) the best restaurant on the Baja ( 5 minutes drive away), a new restaurant right next door (which we were lucky enough to help open on our last night), multiple buildings which spreads people out, a pool table which allowed for much camaraderie even a game of cheese ball, lots of wood for great bonfires and heating the hot tub. Robert himself adds to the flavour of the place. Our kids enjoyed his banter and tales.
Our older teens tried surfing but it is not for the feint of heart. It is really not a swimming beach. And at times can be dangerous. Cerritos is a 15 minute drive away.
As someone else mentioned it is not suitable for disabled. There are many step ups and step downs within the main house. A flashlight is a must for getting around at night. I am 80 and managed OK.
All in all a wonderful place for a happy reunion and very, very different experience.
Rustic, simple and beautiful!!!
Just the quiet vacation we needed. Family of 8 stayed for a week and truly loved this place. Robert was out for shoulder surgery but Andy swung by each day to check on us. We are rested and truly got our monies worth. Would book again. Beach is incredible. Most days I sat alone or just with the family and we were the only ones on the beach. This place isn't close to Cabo so just remember you're booking a remote location. A long dirt road off of 19 gets you here but seriously worth every bump and twist. Thanks Dr. Robert!
Laid-back beach home perfect for relaxing
Our 3-generation family of 16 had a great time at Dr Robert's Ocean Oasis. From the initial contact, Robert made us feel welcome and gave us helpful advice on activities and dining. The compound of three buildings provided all of us ample space to be together or apart as we chose.
The houses are comfortable but rustic; if you require 5-star luxury, go to Cabo San Lucas and pay through the nose. The location couldn't be lovelier: right on a long, inviting beach with almost no other people in sight. We could stroll along the shoreline to the beach bar, about 1/2 mile away, where we could swing in hammocks and have the cheerful, English-speaking bartender to ourselves.
We often ate at local restaurants (one of the best is the nearest: Hierba Buena), but Robert thoughtfully provided charcoal for the grill next to the palapa (covered patio), where we could cook out, sit at the picnic tables, and watch the glorious sunsets. The hot tub and fire circle were popular evening attractions. Bring a telescope if you're interested in astronomy--the stars are incredibly bright. (Be sure to set up and heat the wood-fired tub before sunset—it's tricky after dark.)
The houses are well equipped, with tableware and linens provided along with ice and filtered water. The kids loved the trampoline, the pool table, the rock pools, and the two resident cats.
A couple of caveats: Because of numerous steps, the property is not suitable for people with mobility difficulties. And be aware that the ocean currents can be powerful and unpredictable. Small children will need close supervision. Ours, ranging from 8 to 13, were happy digging in the sand, boogie-boarding, beachcombing, and swimming near shore. When conditions are right, there's good surfing. Our group wasn't interested in nightlife, which is reportedly limited outside the Cabos. We did find the nearby colonial town of Todos Santos charming and well worth a visit for dining and shopping.
Despite a few minor glitches (typical of Mexico), we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and hope to come back soon.
For a relaxing getaway, don't overplan activities. Kick back and enjoy the slower pace, friendliness, and genuinely welcoming culture!
This delightful group has now rebooked the entire property for 9 nights beginning June 30, 2018. There is no greater compliment than that.
My son and four of his closest friends graduated from high school and I wanted to find a place on the beach away from the maddening hoards of Cabo. Robert's Ocean Oasis was surfside of exactly what I was looking for.
As other reviewers have posted, don't expect a 5-star Ritz Carlton. Knowing that, I prepped everyone (thirteen people in total) to expect a laid back surfing location with constant sand between the toes and waves crashing on the shore.
It's old school Baja, complete with dusty roads and a host who knows the area extremely well. We took every one of Dr. Robert's suggestions and enjoyed them all.
We all agreed that it was a most memorable and enjoyable holiday and would have done it all again the exact same way.
Thank you so much Juli for that simple down home review. Your group was a joy ... smart, relaxed, outdoorsy and happy here from the moment you arrived. One of the boys had major trampoline skills and they readily pitched in to create that giant bonfire. Also it made my day when one of you said upon returning from La Paz."we are glad to be home".
That's the point I am trying to make.. We are not a commercial establishment. Sure we have abundant clean linens, and the maids are fantastic (although they only come weekly). But there is always a broken door or a leaking faucet somewhere and Ray up the street ready to come fit it, Of Course I live on the property.!!! It's a full time job just to manage the water systems including the giant Alaskan wood fired hot tub. This is also a Baja savvy neighborhood, populated with very interesting, eccentric people who are always looking out for each other!
In short we have looked hard to find this amazing spot and are always happy to welcome the wonderful people who find their way here. R W
terrible host. kept watching over us and asking for more money. kept eating our food. will never go
property is run down. 1 step above camping. too bad as it is right on beach in good location. needs upgrading and host to leave guests alone. instead of always around
This group booked and paid for only one of the 3 rental houses on the property and were convinced that they had rented the entire compound. They paid as 10 guests and arrived with 17 people. The arrival occurred only one hour after the prior guests and was 6 hours earlier than agreed upon. Within 20 minutes there were 3 young children up on the solid oak pool table playing with drum sticks they had been given and dropping cues, balls and drum sticks happily on the concrete floor. Two adults present in the room were taking no action at all to control them. I was accosted for entering the house to bring clean linens to the maids who had just started changing the beds..
If you scan the reviews, it actually leaps out how how much I love to be a great host. We average fourteen 5 star reviews For every one 1star review.. I have come to dread that 15th booking. Within 30 minutes of this groups arrival I was so convinced this wouldn't work I offered a 100% cash refund and uged them to leave. That said no no we can help put away the things you are emotionally attached too, etc. We all did try to do that. The core issue which continued however, is that almost the entire group continues to believe to this day that they rented the entire property. Only John, the one group member who handled the booking, was completely straight and fair to me. He knew he had only paid for 10 people and worked hard to get the additional money. Homeaway also had accurate payment records. . I regret as much as anyone what happened here. But the extent of the intragroup misconceptions about what they had rented, when they were scheduled to arrive and the level of hostility toward me was beyond my power to change. Dr Robert 5/3/2017
The ultimate sandy beach party pad
We traveled to Dr. Robert's place over the weekend and had an outstanding time. His property will comfortably accommodate very large groups. Keep in mind, this is not a five-star resort! No chocolates on your pillows, but the beds, linens, and towels were clean and supplied upon our arrival. There were nine guys in our group (traveling for my brother's bachelor party) and we could not have asked for a better location for cervezas and beach games.
*One important detail* Since the property is directly oceanfront, it's quite isolated. So, reliable transportation is key. We worked with Todos Santos Private Transportation (http://tsprivatetransportation.com/) and it was the best customer experience I've had. Mario was our contact, he and basically kept us an open tab until our return to the airport. One bachelor described Mario as a "spirit guide" through Mexico. His company drivers took reat care of us, and were fairly priced.
If you want a maid to clean your bedroom, do not go here. If you're seeking an epic weekend of bonfires, beach games, and sandy feet - this is the place for you. Last note, there is a sought after surfing point break 100 yards north and a cool beachside bar directly in front.
Hey Ryan, Thank you for the great review and I liked the way you mentioned Rafas bar on the beach and the great spirit guide Mario. As I recall several of your crew are starting a website development company. Hmmm let's work together to build a website that captures more about my place and the local life. R
AVAILABLE EITHER ON-SITE OR NEARBY: Fishing trips, surf lessons, Ultralight flights, back country tours, snorkeling and spear fishing, whale watching, bird watching, yoga and meditation. Plenty of shopping in Todos Santos, 9 miles away. Basic grocery items available in small stores in Pescadero, 2 miles away.
