About Robert Winquist

Robert Winquist has had extensive experience both as an educator and entrepreneur. He has a PhD in Higher Education from the University of Iowa and was a University Professor, Vice President and administrator for many years. From 1993-2007 he served as the President and CEO of Vending Supply Inc., a Nevada corporation that designed and printed and distributed one billion machine vended children's stickers and temporary tattoos. Robert is a Minister of the Universal Life church, who performs weddings on the beach. He has four beautiful sons and daughters and is an avid fisherman. Robert owns a ranch in the Sierra Laguna mountains, east of Pescadero, and enjoys taking guests on tours of the area.

Robert Winquist purchased this estate in 2004

Why Robert Winquist chose Baja California Sur

Growing up in a family that loved camping on the Baja, I always knew I wanted to retire here. Somewhere that was easy to get to, natural and pristine. I drove the entire peninsula many times looking for the perfect spot. Whenever I drove through Pescadero I couldn't stop smiling because it felt so right. I honestly believe this is one of those powerful spots on the planet that attracts good energy. Robert's Place is a gathering spot for friends and family that we are happy to share with others.

What makes this estate unique

Surprisingly, one of the daily benefits I enjoy is driving the single lane dirt farm road that leads 1 mile out to the highway. The experience of slowing way down to enjoy the lushness of the crops and the pace at which they grow is its own reward. The standard of courtesy and kindness exchanged between very different types of people as we pull over to make room for each other is a genuine old Mexico experience.

Another hidden benefit which reveals the relaxing approach to living here is Whale Watching - Pescadero Style. You can sit for hours watching whales breach and spout as they swim past in front of the house. On a calm day it is possible to kayak out and sit quietly as a pod of whales passes within a hundred feet of you. Sometimes they linger for days outside of the breaking waves near shore. If you are the adventurous type, borrow a mask and fins and swim out! Welcome to Whale Watching - Pescadero Style!

Vacationing here is like living in a nature sanctuary. Egrets feed in the tide pools. Fishermen cast from shore for Spanish Mackerel and Rooster fish at dawn. And bonfires on the beach are a tradition. This is the Baja I knew as a child.

A Great Property With A Great Host

  • 5 of 5

Our Family stayed at Dr. Roberts beautiful property in January 2017. What an amazing property, and Robert was the most gracious host we have ever met. He stays discreetly on the premises, so is available if any issue arises. And folks, it is the Baja. Issues do arise. Appliances might go out, drains might be a bit slow. But Robert quickly takes care of what needs to be done, setting things straight. At one point, our rental car had a flat tire while we were en route to our whale shark swimming tour. Unfortunately the spare was also flat. Robert came to the rescue! He willingly piled all of us into his truck, drove us to our boat, waited in town all day, and drove us home. This is just one way Robert constantly went the extra mile, or in this case, fifty miles.

The property itself is beautiful. It is not the Ritz, it is a comfortable, lovely beach property. The only awkward spot is one bedroom in the main house links to another bedroom, so one has to walk through the other bedroom to get to the hall and bathroom. But it is more than made up by the fact the property is right on the beach, baby turtles are released just down the beach, and most of the time, we had the beach to ourselves.

I highly recommend this property and Robert for any vacation on the Baja. The road down to the beach is bumpy and a mile long, but there are fields of basil growing along the way. It truly is a beautiful place.

Owner's Response: Ok. This is a bit old fashioned, but I am serious tempted to put a sign above our entry gate that states" Through these portals pass the most wonderful people in the world...our Guests." Seriously many of the people self selecting to be here I consider lifelong friends. This has gotten beyond a business model. I often think about phasing into an ongoing community where a large group of the people who really love the vibe here can take an ownership share and come for longer periods of.time. working together we can create an alternative that functions more easily and inexpensively that a bunch of nuclear families buying lots and each trying to do it all themselves. We will soon be having dance church, a cool restaurant and a global radio station.on the grounds. I loved Burningman, Harbin Hot Springs and the big picture here is to create an ongoing community of smart happy life celebrating people right here.〰➰〰😎🌴 Dr Robert〰

Laid back beach vibes.

  • 5 of 5

Dr Robert's compound is perfectly situated at San Pedrito's, a great right-handed point break and a very low key beach hang. Nice to get away from the crowds at Cerritos. We saw many whales from our beachfront perch, as well as dolphins on our last day. The Sunrise suite was perfect for a couple. Dr Robert also had great recommendations on dining and activities, as well as beach umbrellas, boogieboards, and wetsuits for making the most of perfect days at the beach. Highly recommended!

Best 40th Birthday EVER!!

  • 5 of 5

This place was magical!! I celebrated my 40th Birthday at Dr. Roberts Compound and it was amazing!! I rented the whole place with 12 other friends and that was a great plan because there is so much space and plenty for all to do. I live in Hawaii and love beach life and tend to be spoiled by amazing views and wonderful weather but my friends and I were absolutely blown away by all the beauty this lovely area has to offer. Dr. Robert makes you feel so at peace and comforted by his hospitality. Each room has an authentic charm to it and makes you feel right at home. Words can not express how the waves and beach made me feel. Sunsets were spectacular and so many activities to do, surf, swim, walk along beach, check out the sea turtle hatchlings, it's just a short drive into the town of Todos Santos, Playa Las Palmas beach, and Cerritos beach. I would highly recommend this place!!! My only regret was that I did not stay longer. Thank-you Dr. Robert!!

A little piece of heaven on earth. A true gem of a property.

  • 5 of 5

I am a beach spirit. I grew up on the coast in heat and humidity. If your vacation preference is Hyatt, factor outside temperatures into your plans. I love sleeping with windows open and I got to do that every night. With daytime highs at 90, getting to sleep was hot but every night ended up under a blanket. Some rooms do have AC if that is important to you.

We rented the Sunset Suite. Surrounded by windows, the room is a fishbowl with beautiful views in every direction. As beautiful as the sunsets were, I was more intrigued by the sunrise...every morning. The bed faces the mountain range and this time of year the sun comes up at a perfect angle as to not shine right in your face. The flowering landscape of the property only adds to the view. The large, very private balcony looks north up the beach. I enjoyed watching the locals, primarily surfers, walk the trail adjacent to the property to check out morning surf conditions at San Pedrito beach.

Expect a bed & breakfast without breakfast. There are relative few choices for breakfast so a stop in Cabo for groceries might benefit you (water bottles & beer!!). Otherwise our favorite breakfast spots were Alama & Manny's in Todas and Baja Beans (think Starbucks) in Pescadero. A Sunday morning market adds a little flavor. Some units have a kitchen but there is also a community kitchen.

Nightlife will be primarily dependent on the personality of other guests or people you meet out. This is a rural community and some nights we were literally lights out at 8:30pm. The sky is pitch black with more stars than many have ever seen.

Dr. Robert is unlike any VRBO/Airbnb host I have ever experienced. He likes having guests and is totally accommodating. We got a taste of local life by going into town and out to eat with him on several occasions. That's the way we prefer to travel, off the beaten tourist path. Research things to do before you travel. We were the only guests so we didn't have many people to play with. We explored other area beaches, spent time in Todas, drove to Balandra Bay for a day, and made friends with the bartenders (Oscar & Axel) at Cerritos Surf & Beach Club. Having felt like we saw it all, we enjoyed just spending the last two days on the property. I have experienced many beaches but never seen so few people, or no people, as on these beaches.

This place is essence of beach. I didn't wear half the clothes I brought and most days never changed out a bathing suit. Recharge your soul.
