Splendid Vacation at Bass-Terre

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful home. This is a true gem on Mount Desert Island and exceeded our expectations. The location - on the “Quiet side”, was exactly what we hoped for our first trip to Acadia. We enjoyed hikes on Flying Mountain, Ships Harbor trail, and Penobscot Mt., ending around Jordan Pond, with a delightful lunch at the Jordan Pond House. We also enjoyed the (very informative and well done) “Bridges of Rockefeller” Carriage Tours at Wildwood Stables, followed by lobsters at Thurston’s!

The short drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia was easy, and it was so worth it to have the peacefulness and solitude that Bass Terre offers. Our children enjoyed finding many treasures on the shore, spending time in the separate little seaside cabin, walking the wooded trails and many family games on the huge lawn. The location, at the head of Goose Cove is magnificent with unsurpassed views of windjammers sailing in the distance, lobster boats coming and going, and views of Swans Island, even Isle de Haut! We left with so many wonderful memories, and we wish to return.

Awesome week visiting Acadia and area

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed in this lovely 1850's home on Goose Cove. I much appreciated the plaque on the history of Basse Terre, the grounds were full of beautiful flowers, the house fully equipped. We have young adult kids and rented a canoe and kayaks, delivered to the house, which enabled us to fully enjoy Goose Cove, we ventured out at sunset a few evenings. We were visited by jellyfish, gray seals, Atlantic porpoise and even a bald Eagle showed up. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the large table in the family room for game night each night. Basse Terre is located on the "quiet side" of Mt. Desert, which was a welcome change of the hustle and bustle of sight seeing at Bar Harbor and Acadia. We woke up super early one morning to catch sunrise on Cadillac Mt.... this should not be missed. The sunrise turned out to be secondary to the awesome display of thick fog rolling over Bar Harbor heading out to sea. We all totally enjoyed our week and recommend Basse Terre!! Our favorite lunch spot was a little place called Peeky Toe Provisions in Bar Harbor, the only reason we stopped was b/c the kids thought the name was funny but it turned out to be AWESOME!! Gotts Supermarket had the best peanut butter cookies. We rented kayaks from National Park Canoe & Kayak which was super. Bike rentals from Island Bike rental in Southwest Harbor, which we do not recommend. We did a sail trip out of Bass Harbor, Island Cruises, very awesome and relaxing. LuLu's Lobster tour, very informative. We bicycled all over the carriage trails in Acadia. Took DeDe's suggestion on the Asticou and Thuya gardens in Southwest Harbor, they are beautiful. We could not visit Rockefeller's garden as it is only open on Thursdays but heard from several tour guides to not miss it if at all possible. Thank you DeDe and Charles for sharing your home. Wonderful Family Vacation in Acadia

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at BassTerre. We knew that Acadia would be spectacular, but was so thrilled to see that BassTerre was equally terrific. The property is just as described, but the view and private setting is even more impressive than shown. We really appreciated the owners many recommendations, and the cottage had absolutely everything we needed to make us feel at home. Our kids explored the shoreline each day, going on countless “buoy hunts” and we loved the huge front lawn for family games of badminton and soccer.(as well as building evening campfires on the beach!)

Great location to get to the park and most of our days were spent hiking and exploring Acadia. If you are trying to avoid the bustle of Bar Harbor but want to be close enough to get there for dinner or day trips (about 30 minutes), you can't do better. Southwest Harbor is less than 10 minutes away with many lovely shops and restaurants and Bass Harbor is only 5 minutes away (Island Cruises, out of Bass Harbor, is a must!)

The views from the cottage and deck were absolutely breathtaking, lobster boats were fun to watch and hear, an eagle flying overhead, deer in the early morning, and being able to step out to our private beach was priceless. Lobster was available just about everywhere, but we really enjoyed ordering it fresh from the Goose Cove lobstermen and enjoying it on our deck while watching the sunset.

So beautiful, so Maine, so thankful for it all. Will definitely return to BassTerre for more family memories!

A slice of paradise on beautiful Goose Cove!

  • 5 of 5

We selected BassTerre for our spring vacation and couldn't be happier with our decision. We've rented vacation homes on the Oregon coast, the Blue Ridge mountains and the Florida panhandle and BassTerre was by far the nicest and most comfortable home yet exceeding our expectations. The cottage was immaculate and attractively furnished with so many thoughtful details not normally found in a vacation "rental". We felt at home immediately and everything you need to relax is provided from the large selection of books and travel guides to the wonderful Adirondack chairs outside at the oceans edge. The kitchen has everything you'll need to cook full meals or steam lobsters/clams right down to the spices.

We hiked several great trails including Penobscot Mountain to Sargent Pond, the Beehive, Champlain Mountain and South Bubble. Jordan Pond house's popovers are not to be missed and were the perfect end to one of our hikes. We walked the carriage trails, went tidepooling at Ship's Harbor Nature Trail and shopped in Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor. A favorite outing took us to Northeast Harbor which we visited after seeing the Asticou Azalea Gardens.

And I can't emphasize enough how gorgeous the views are here. Stunning sunsets were enjoyed right from our deck and huge front yard, while the backdrop of Acadia's landscape framed the scene. Just breathtaking! The starry skies at night took our breath away and walks along the shore during low tide offered us lots to explore in the tidal pools. Kayaking right from beach was incredible! We saw a harbor seal as we paddled and even met a cove lobsterman hauling in his traps. The awe-inspiring natural beauty of Blue Hill Bay and Acadia National Park was at our fingertips both weeks, and it was truly tough to leave. Just a peaceful slice of heaven...that's the best way I can describe our experience here and would highly recommend!

exceeded all expectations

  • 5 of 5

My family and I enjoyed a wonderful week at Bass Terre, the property is immaculate the house was exactly as it is represented in the photos. The kids enjoyed the spacious grounds, they had breakfast in the bunkhouse and had a great time exploring the shoreline. The location is great, a short ride to all the attractions of MDI but quiet and secluded when you arrive home. The house is just great, cozy with wonderful views from every window, we would love to return in the future. A wonderful peaceful week. Charles and Dede we helpful answering all questions and we would like to thank you for letting us use your terrific home !

Charming and welcoming!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay in this quaint and charming home! The very first day we were in the huge front yard and a deer ran across the lawn. We have two teenagers who loved the expansive property and the private beach. We rented kayaks for the week and launched them right from the private shoreline. Kayaking out on the water during a tranquil sunset is breathtaking! We visited Acadia...Jordan Pond House pop-overs are a must.... went bike-riding on the carriage roads, walked to Bar Island during low tide, walked the shore path in Bar Harbor, took a tour on Lulu's lobster boat, and visited the Bass Harbor Light Station. And every night we came back to a quiet, serene, setting with the most beautiful sunsets we have ever seen. We loved our stay here and would definitely recommend the Bass Terre to anyone vacationing near Acadia.
