Everything you could want on the coast of Maine!
We have had the wonderful opportunity to stay at Bass Terre a number of times, most recently in September 2017, and have never been disappointed. The location at the head of Goose Cove is unsurpassed for beauty. You can see the cove out your bedroom window as you awaken each day, and enjoy it as you eat your meals on the deck. Sunsets at cocktail hour are amazing. We never tire of the location. It’s fun to walk along the beach and collect sea glass, or sit and read in the yard. We also find it easy to enjoy the beauty of Acadia National Park, and have fun visiting the shops and restaurants in Bar Harbor and the other towns on Mt. Desert Island, all a short drive from the house.
The house is extremely clean, comfortable and well equipped. There are books and games to play at the house, and the owners have provided a book with recommendations for many other activities on the island. The kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms have everything that one might need, and the owners are very responsive to any requests. We hope to make a visit to this exceptional property an annual event.
Splendid Vacation at Bass-Terre
What a wonderful home. This is a true gem on Mount Desert Island and exceeded our expectations. The location - on the “Quiet side”, was exactly what we hoped for our first trip to Acadia. We enjoyed hikes on Flying Mountain, Ships Harbor trail, and Penobscot Mt., ending around Jordan Pond, with a delightful lunch at the Jordan Pond House. We also enjoyed the (very informative and well done) “Bridges of Rockefeller” Carriage Tours at Wildwood Stables, followed by lobsters at Thurston’s!
The short drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia was easy, and it was so worth it to have the peacefulness and solitude that Bass Terre offers. Our children enjoyed finding many treasures on the shore, spending time in the separate little seaside cabin, walking the wooded trails and many family games on the huge lawn. The location, at the head of Goose Cove is magnificent with unsurpassed views of windjammers sailing in the distance, lobster boats coming and going, and views of Swans Island, even Isle de Haut! We left with so many wonderful memories, and we wish to return.
Perfect location on the "Quiet-Side"
Bass-Terre, located on the "quiet-side" of the island is just that and more. After busy days of hiking up Cadillac Mountain, and other hikes, biking the carriage roads to the Jordon Pound House for lunch, or riding the ferry to Cranberry Island, we always appreciated coming "home" and enjoying the expansiveness and views from the property. The location was perfect for a drive to one of our favorite places, Schoodic, as well as Southwest Harbor and the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. The scenery in Acadia is unbelievable and should be experienced by everyone. The park itself can get very busy and crowded, which is why we especially appreciated coming back to the "quiet-side."
The house itself has been well maintained and is warm and inviting. We valued the history of this home and were grateful the owners took the time to have information concerning it. The house was clean and in perfect condition upon our arrival. The location was close to Thurston's Lobster Pound, which is a must and a short drive for groceries.
While preparing meals, we were never in want of anything. Loved our lobster meals on the porch and watching the sunset or the fog roll into the harbor. Absolutely breathtaking! Appreciated the croquet set and had many games on the sprawling lawn as well as our many walks on the shore looking for sea glass.
We found the owners to be most helpful and available in the renting process; and the book, put together by the owners, containing suggested day trips and activities, was extremely helpful in our planning each day's events.
If you're thinking of visiting the Acadia National Park and would enjoy coming home to a peaceful and tranquil location after a busy day in the park, our family would highly recommend Bass-Terre for the perfect Maine vacation on the "quiet-side."
What an amazing find! The picture doesn't even do it justice - although great pic by the water. Our family (2 adults and 3 teens/young adults) stayed the week and wished we could have stayed longer. Such an beautiful setting - spent many hours - day and night, on the spacious yard - either watching the seals or bald eagles or playing frisbee. House was extremely comfortable. Lots of room to hang out or get away from the rest of the crew! Kitchen extremely well stocked - have rented quite a few other homes through VRBO, but never had one as well stocked as here. Great location - close to Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor. Close enough to Bar Harbor to easily get in and do hiking, biking, Jordan's Pond etc. Owners very friendly - Dede got in touch with use beforehand to answer any of our questions and give us suggestions. If we are ever planning on going back for a week - this will definitely be our place to return to! Thanks Dede and Charles for a wonderful vacation!
Awesome week visiting Acadia and area
Our family stayed in this lovely 1850's home on Goose Cove. I much appreciated the plaque on the history of Basse Terre, the grounds were full of beautiful flowers, the house fully equipped. We have young adult kids and rented a canoe and kayaks, delivered to the house, which enabled us to fully enjoy Goose Cove, we ventured out at sunset a few evenings. We were visited by jellyfish, gray seals, Atlantic porpoise and even a bald Eagle showed up. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the large table in the family room for game night each night. Basse Terre is located on the "quiet side" of Mt. Desert, which was a welcome change of the hustle and bustle of sight seeing at Bar Harbor and Acadia. We woke up super early one morning to catch sunrise on Cadillac Mt.... this should not be missed. The sunrise turned out to be secondary to the awesome display of thick fog rolling over Bar Harbor heading out to sea. We all totally enjoyed our week and recommend Basse Terre!! Our favorite lunch spot was a little place called Peeky Toe Provisions in Bar Harbor, the only reason we stopped was b/c the kids thought the name was funny but it turned out to be AWESOME!! Gotts Supermarket had the best peanut butter cookies. We rented kayaks from National Park Canoe & Kayak which was super. Bike rentals from Island Bike rental in Southwest Harbor, which we do not recommend. We did a sail trip out of Bass Harbor, Island Cruises, very awesome and relaxing. LuLu's Lobster tour, very informative. We bicycled all over the carriage trails in Acadia. Took DeDe's suggestion on the Asticou and Thuya gardens in Southwest Harbor, they are beautiful. We could not visit Rockefeller's garden as it is only open on Thursdays but heard from several tour guides to not miss it if at all possible. Thank you DeDe and Charles for sharing your home. Wonderful Family Vacation in Acadia
We had a wonderful week at BassTerre. We knew that Acadia would be spectacular, but was so thrilled to see that BassTerre was equally terrific. The property is just as described, but the view and private setting is even more impressive than shown. We really appreciated the owners many recommendations, and the cottage had absolutely everything we needed to make us feel at home. Our kids explored the shoreline each day, going on countless “buoy hunts” and we loved the huge front lawn for family games of badminton and soccer.(as well as building evening campfires on the beach!)
Great location to get to the park and most of our days were spent hiking and exploring Acadia. If you are trying to avoid the bustle of Bar Harbor but want to be close enough to get there for dinner or day trips (about 30 minutes), you can't do better. Southwest Harbor is less than 10 minutes away with many lovely shops and restaurants and Bass Harbor is only 5 minutes away (Island Cruises, out of Bass Harbor, is a must!)
The views from the cottage and deck were absolutely breathtaking, lobster boats were fun to watch and hear, an eagle flying overhead, deer in the early morning, and being able to step out to our private beach was priceless. Lobster was available just about everywhere, but we really enjoyed ordering it fresh from the Goose Cove lobstermen and enjoying it on our deck while watching the sunset.
So beautiful, so Maine, so thankful for it all. Will definitely return to BassTerre for more family memories!
We are located minutes away from Acadia National Park, where hiking and biking are favorite activities of visitors. We have over 1,000 feet of private shore frontage with beach, ledges, trails and tidal pools for hours of exploring. Kayaks may be rented locally and launched easily from our beach.
