Winter Harbor is a quaint working fishing community and summer playground.
Cheerful, comfortable, close, convenient…all describe our home nestled in this quaint fishing village where one can enjoy what Maine has to offer and then return to a quiet home where only Maine’s birds or a harbor’s foghorn can be heard so one can relax, reflect and rest up for a new day of adventures.
There are 3 bedrooms, all eclectically decorated with Maine themes, country quilts, artwork, antiques to provide that pleasurable “visiting grandma’s” venue yet still incorporating today’s amenities of a newly updated galley kitchen complete with local Deer Isle granite countertops with bar seating, microwave, refrigerator, ceramic cook-top, coffee maker, toaster, small oven/broiler, pots, pans, china, silverware, washer/dryer. Our open concept dining/living room features TV w/DVD & VCR player, movie library, radio/CD player, and wireless internet. Bed linens, towels, paper products are provided. There are 2 full bathrooms, one newly finished with stall shower and pedestal sink.
On our back porch one can enjoy having a private moment with morning coffee and a book or having a BBQ or lobster on our outdoor grill. New this year is a lovely, stone patio with a 3 foot stone fire-pit. There is an awesome playground across from our home that our young visitors would certainly enjoy and parents can view easily. We are on the end of a dead-end street so traffic is very limited. We also have some board games, and outdoor toys for those who would like to partake. We have several bikes in our garage for you use and pleasure.
Kayaks can be rented easily from locations mentioned in our “Welcome to our Home” book as well as other attractions, ferry & bus schedules, shops, hikes and of course the magnificent Acadia National Park’s Schoodic Peninsula whose entrance is a short ten minute drive from our house and covers nearly 2500 acres where sightseeing, hiking, biking, picnicking are all there for your enjoyment.
A free excursion bus sponsored by LLBean picks up passengers at the end of our road at Rte. 186 to take folks around Winter Harbor and Schoodic Peninsula throughout the day during the summer season allowing passengers to get off the bus at a spot and be picked up later on another bus run. We are a few minutes’ walk to the ocean, restaurants, grocery store, lobster pounds, post office, public library, historic society museum, artists’ studios, bank, farmers’ market, a unique 5&10 cent store, ice cream parlor, antique and handmade artisan crafts shops.
The nearby Bar Harbor Ferry on Sargent St. can take you over to Bar Harbor which serves as a leisurely transportation vehicle as well as a sight-seeing boat ride on one of the prettiest bays in Maine. There is also a public boat launch, golf course, and our historic Hammond Hall where many varied, live entertainment performances are held throughout the year—all just moments away from our doorstep!
Swimming is available off the rocky shores or one can seek enjoyment at Jones and Flanders Ponds with their sandy beaches and fresh waters which are just a short distance away where one can do some boating or fishing as well. Also, the area has vineyards hosting tours and tastings, historic buildings, unique shops, a variety of eateries, other quaint fishing villages, art galleries, antique shops, hiking trails, educational science and environmental centers, and more of Maine’s beautiful coastline, mountains and lakes…all beckoning folks to come and explore.

My wife retired as a substitute teacher and I'm retired from IBM after 34 years. We've enjoyed our yearly vacations in this area since 1991 because of the beautiful views, warm people and the slower pace of life.
Robert Granell purchased this house in 2005
Our family has been coming to Winter Harbor since 1991 when we had an opportunity to rent a vacation home from one of our friends which was located on the water facing Mount Desert Island across from Frenchman’s Bay. We stayed for a week and had one of the nicest, most relaxing, vacations we’ve had, with a view that was breathtaking. Since then we came each year for the next 13 years and stayed at the same location. We got to know the area pretty well and became friends with some of the local townspeople, all of whom were very friendly, helpful and genuine. Our kids began referring to our stays as “going to our Maine house”. In 2004, our friends decided to retire and planned to use the house in Maine. Needless to say, we were very disappointed, thinking that could have been our last year staying in an area we have come to love. About the same time, the Navy left a local base and the town picked up all their housing properties and began selling them. That's when we decided to purchase one for our own. This turned out to be one of our best decisions.
Close proximity to great hiking trails, short easy walk to town multiple launch sites for kayaks, Relaxing atmosphere, and WIFI.
Central location to enjoy down east Maine. Our family had a wonderful week in Winter Harbor staying at this property. . The Schoodic Peninsula and surrounding towns are a reflection of true coastal Maine. Not full of tourists and gimmicks. The home was exactly as portrayed in all of the pictures. The house is very nice and comfortable, however, not a place for the young folks to run wild. Loved the beautiful outdoor patio, chairs and fire pit. I would recommend this place if you want a very reasonably priced comfortable place, I would rent it again.
We were able to secure this property with just one day notice. Bob was extremely helping in expediting the process. All out needs were met and we had a wonderful stay in Maine. Thank you Bob. I would highly recommend this place if you want a very reasonably priced very comfortable place and don't mind driving an hour to bar harbor I would rent it again.
Great location. Perfect for children, playground across the street and unit at the end of the street. Owners were fantastic. They were very helpful when I had questions. Backyard and grounds are clearly cared for and they include a lovely patio with picnic table and fire pit. It is a super place to hang out during the day or evening.
The only downfall, in the unit there are alot of decorative "trinkets" and "stuff" on shelves, dressers, kitchen storage areas so not a lot of places to put personal stuff or food if you intend to stay for longer then 2 or 3 days. Also, if you have kids, many trinkets are breakable, so advise moving out of hands reach.
Other then that, I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to rent a place in WH Maine.
The owners are very kind. Winter Harbor is a quaint small town. Schoodic Peninsula is beautiful. The condo is small for a large group but perfect for four or 5. If children are involved, it can sleep more. It was nice to see a lovely part of Maine.
Bob's house is nice and cozy! It's about 1 hour away from Bar Harbor, but only about 15min to Scoodic point. We had 9 people and we all fit! There are plenty of extra clean towels and linens in the closet as well. The house is nicely decorated with an antique/ocean feel. The kitchen is well-stocked with tools and pots, and lobster cooking and eating equipment was provided. There was even a pamphlet on the wall on how to cook/eat Maine lobster. Bob arrived on the same day as us, we were able to talk. He is a very nice person! The neighborhood is also very nice and quiet. We really enjoyed our stay!
We had a wonderful stay in this home. It was well-cared for and the owner was great to work with. He was prompt to respond to questions and had helpful information for our stay. He is an honest and straight-up guy and clearly cares that your stay is good. The house is a two story duplex with three bedrooms. The beds were comfortable as was the living room furniture. The house was very comfortable to just hang out in. The only reason we deducted one star is because the kitchen is very small. That would not be a problem for those who don't intend to do a lot of cooking, but it made meal preparation and clean up more challenging since we did most of our meals at home for our family of four. They did have plenty of nice dishes and tableware as well as a lobster pot for those who would want to prepare their own. The small toaster oven even has a convection setting, although it is obviously too small for baking a chicken, making a pie, etc.
The owner has provided 5 bicycles for renters to use, and we had a great ride around the Acadia Park on the Schoodic Peninsula side. There was no way to adjust the heights of the seats for those bikes needing a wrench, and so it would be a nice addition to have one available. A couple of the bikes need a little work on the gear shift mechanisms, especially if one plans to take a really long ride. They worked well enough for our shorter tour, and we had a good time. They have a new fire pit in the back, and although we bought wood to use, never got to try it out. We left the wood for the next renters, but it does look like it would be a fun place to sit around and relax in the evening.
There is a small grocery store in Winter Harbor with decent fruits and vegetables, and they have a small but nice farmer's market on Tuesday mornings. The Hannaford grocery in Ellsworth has everything you can want. Winter Harbor is very small, quiet and cute. We ate a really nice lunch at the J. M. Gerrish restaurant. It took about an hour to get to Mt. Desert Island where we did a lot of hiking. We appreciated coming back to the peacefulness of Winter Harbor after the hustle in Bar Harbor and the Park.
We would definitely recommend this home and would be happy to stay there again. It is comfortable to live in and the owner is excellent.
Scoodic Point (part of Acadia National Park) entrance is just a half mile away. The park has hiking trails, bike paths, kayak access points, and beautiful coastal scenery along it's inner loop road.
