The Cathedral district, located in the heart of Rouen, is one of the most iconic and historic districts of the city. Dominated by the majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral, this neighbourhood is a real architectural gem and a lively place to live, rich in history, culture and heritage.
Rouen Cathedral is one of the most famous Gothic buildings in France and was immortalised by Claude Monet in a series of paintings depicting its façade in different lights. It is famous for its lantern tower, impressive gargoyles and magnificent stained glass windows. Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, it has undergone numerous changes and restorations, especially after the damage caused during the Second World War. Today, it is one of the city's most visited monuments.
Around the cathedral, the neighbourhood consists of narrow cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, typical of Norman architecture. These houses, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, are often decorated with half-timbering and colourful facades, giving the neighbourhood a special charm. Rue Saint-Romain, for example, is very popular for its craft shops and antique dealers.
The Place de la Cathédrale is a central point in the neighbourhood and offers an unobstructed view of the cathedral's façade. It is often bustling with concerts, cultural events and seasonal markets, such as the Christmas market. It is also a starting point for guided tours of the city.
Not far from the cathedral is the Palais de Justice de Rouen, another impressive historic building with flamboyant Gothic architecture. This palace is linked to the history of Joan of Arc, who was tried and condemned in Rouen in 1431. Her trial took place in part in the former archiepiscopal palace, which has now been replaced by the current building.
The neighbourhood is also rich in museums and galleries. Among the best known are the Rouen Museum of Fine Arts, which houses a large collection of works ranging from the Renaissance to the 20th century, including several works by Monet. There is also the Le Secq des Tournelles Museum, dedicated to antique ironwork, and the Ceramics Museum, which showcases Rouen's rich ceramic tradition.
Today, the Cathedral district is lively and very popular with both tourists and locals. It is home to many cafés, restaurants and shops. The pedestrianised cobbled streets are perfect for strolling, and there are several terraces where you can stop and admire the view of the cathedral.
All in all, Rouen's Cathedral district is a place that combines the charm of the past with the liveliness of the present. It offers a glimpse into the medieval history of Normandy while being a dynamic centre of Rouen life.
