Unsurpassed and extraordinary, The Casita del Lago has Abiquiu views, amenities and comfort that will leave you breathless in The Land of Enchantment. Whether you are looking for a vacation home base to explore Northern New Mexico, lodging for your classes at nearby Ghost Ranch, the perfect spot to create your art, or a get-away-from-it-all vacation - The Casita del Lago is your destination. Conveniently located and yet very remote, The Casita is located between Santa Fe and Taos (60 miles northwest of Santa Fe and 90 miles southwest of Taos) just outside the historic town of Abiquiú on Abiquiú Lake, across the lake from Ghost Ranch. Located in a gated community that borders undeveloped Ghost Ranch land, the views will take your breath away as you drive towards the lake on private roads to reach The Casita. This IS the Land of Enchantment at its most amazing best.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION - ON ABIQUIU LAKE!

Why stay on Abiquiu Lake? It's quite simple: if you stay anywhere else, you will miss out on some of the most beautiful views in Northern New Mexico! Renting The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake not only gives you lake access, but it provides you with views that will leave you breathless. From our side of the lake you have views of the ancient red rocks, the quiet and beautiful blue waters of Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River, Cerro Pedernal and Carson National Forest. Best of all, although we are located on lakefront property, we do not have mosquitos or other annoying insects (no more so than anyplace in the state in general). Abiquiu is a wonderful village but there is so much more to see. Outside of town you will find the major attractions - Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Plaza Blanca, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, and beautiful Abiquiu Lake - and we are conveniently located near all of them. Oh, and yes - we do have cell phone coverage and cable TV for those moments when you decide to reconnect to reality.

MORE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE HOME

Casita del Lago (Little House on the Lake) is a secluded lakefront vacation home with lakefront access sitting on a river embankment right where the Chama River meets the 12 mile long Abiquiu Lake. This stunning thick-walled adobe style casita sits on 23 acres of natural surroundings and is crafted to true New Mexican style. It is well positioned on a gradually sloping hillside for privacy and it's close proximity to the sky blue water and 250 million year old layered Red Rock cliffs provide for spectacular one-of-a-kind views and pictures---right from your home.

We mean it when we say that The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake is located on one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Step into a Georgia O'Keeffe painting right from your doorstep! This modern adobe style vacation home is like no other in design and amenities. Imported granite countertops, custom handmade Spanish Pueblo arched doors, imported Mexican furniture, resort quality bedding and linens, authentic southwest lit nichos, handmade Kiva Lighting sconces, plastered interior walls, radiant floor heat, air conditioning unit, washer/dryer, high speed WIFI, top rated appliances, original artwork by southwestern artists, an indigenous rock woodburning fireplace, and 4 furnished outdoor living spaces! The east and west portales are attached with heated floors and one-of-a-kind views. The southern portal (porch) just off the kitchen offers warm, sunlit days in even the coolest high desert New Mexico temps. And the hot tub will be an experience to enjoy the natural surroundings.

Although you can stay inside the 1158 sq. ft. glass walled paradise and never plug-in any entertainment device, this deluxe casita is designed to include them. A large LCD HD TV is positioned above the wood burning rock fireplace and speakers for MP3 and Ipod players are included. If you want to move your entertainment outdoors to the heated floor portals where there are as many outdoor living spaces as indoor living spaces, then hook up to the fastest wireless internet in the area or position yourself to watch the flatscreen TV, or do what I do - take an afternoon siesta.

The 6 person hot tub is nestled among huge rock boulders just off the western portal and it reserves it own spectacular views for itself, especially at night when the billions and billions of stars come out. For the more adventuresome, a short hike to the 'Stonehenge firepit' at sunset for a spectacular outdoor viewing and nighttime fire atop the arroyo is a perfect setting for your favorite ghost story--or fairy tale story for the little ones.

Extra care was taken to craft this home. It is a work of art in itself, erected without one tree being uprooted. And while the window space was maximized -- the Casita del Lago remains very energy efficient and green. Often, indigenous materials were utilized by local craftsmen. For you who have not visited New Mexico before, you will immediately notice the absence of noise, air, and light pollutants. We absolutely love it here and we hope you will, too.

For those of you familiar with the area, Casita del Lago is spectacularly unique. The drive down towards the water with the incredible Sedona-like views is worth the trip in itself! You will want to wake up early just to witness the break of dawn. Then settle in for an afternoon siesta on one of the outdoor daybeds; or curl up to a book; go down to the water; start a gourmet meal; sightsee (if you must); horseback ride; photograph; hike the arroyos on your property; draw, paint, write, dream, and much more.

About Carolyn Calfee

Hello! We are Carolyn and Tom Calfee, owners of The Casita del Lago. We are parents to three awesome kids who are now young adults, which means we are now empty-nesters! Tom is a wealth management financial advisor and Carolyn recently retired from the financial industry. We are active people - love hiking, skiing, running (well, we don’t love that but we do it), taking rides on our motorcycle, and we both just got certified in scuba diving. Healthy living and eating are important to us.

We share the beauty and magic of the Land of Enchantment with others by renting out our home and enabling others to experience this incredible location…if you haven’t seen the sun rise or set over Abiquiu Lake and the red rocks, or, if you haven’t experienced an absence of noise and light pollution - then, well, you’ve missed the best part of Abiquiu.

We have met people from all over the world who have discovered The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake. Honestly, we are frequently surprised by how many people know about the little village of Abiquiu…how a couple in Australia heard about our home or why a guest from Spain would choose our home so he could swim (train) in Abiquiu Lake every morning. Meeting our guests - who quickly become part of our Casita del Lago family - is the best part of this experience. We pride ourselves in setting an example as honest, ethical hosts who want every guest to have a perfect experience. Because of this, we have a high rate of return guests.

And this is why we continue to rent out our home: meeting new friends; the positive stories, reviews, and pictures; and guests who never want to leave at the end of their stay - that is the beauty of the vacation rental journey.

Reach out to us at anytime!

Safe travels,

Carolyn & Tom

Carolyn Calfee purchased this house in 2009

Why Carolyn Calfee chose New Mexico

Quite simply, this spot on Abiquiu Lake found us. We found the most beautiful spot on planet earth back in 2009 - we couldn’t believe land surrounded by a lake, a river, million-year-old red rocks, and Pedernal was for sale. We purchased our land that very night. Eventually we built The Casita del Lago on the lakefront property and we absolutely love every minute we are there. We also deeply appreciate the history and culture of the area. There are only four Lakefront parcels in the area, and only one remains available for sale (and that is the property we own adjacent to Casita del Lago.) When you visit here, and you view many of the landscapes Georgia O'Keeffe painted in their original context, you will understand why she could never leave.

What makes this house unique

Rare lakefront home on Abiquiu Lake. 360 degree panoramic views of paradise in Abiquiu, New Mexico. The Casita del Lago is built in traditional adobe style with 14' thick walls. The New Mexican charm is enhanced by the fully arched architectural doorways, hand carved wooden doors, unique granite, lit nichos opposite the woodburning fireplace, and authentic furniture and art work. The home also incorporates todays most modern conveniences. It is very private but also very conspicuous to boaters as it sits high on the hill overlooking the lake. Bring your camera to photograph the vistas, relax in the two outdoor daybeds, eat your meal on the outdoor picnic table overlooking the lake, take in the stars at the incredibly luxurious hot tub, light a fire indoors, or on the western portale, or venture out to the western outdoor fire pit. Admire the sunrise, or heat up the eastern Portal and enjoy it from the bench. Walk down to the water for solitude or to drop a line in. Or, just curl up on the circular oversized chaise and warm up to the afternoon sun. And - those are just a few of the daily options you have at Casita del Lago.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Most grateful that this place, this magical place, whose us. This place -under the meteors, the white fluffy clouds, among the red orange purple cliffs and equally brilliant sunset - we begin our new life together.

Best place we have stayed in the USA

  • 5 of 5

This place is gorgeous. The casita is not enormous but seems spacious--since most of the rooms are windows the outside comes in and you feel the space of New Mexico inside as well as out. The vastness of the landscape at this location is intense--as a painter I just wanted to sit still and look for hours and the fantastic day trips we took felt like they were pulling me away from a perfect place no matter how fun they were. It takes fifteen minutes to drive from the road to the casita--enough to really get you out into the desert and mountain view and when you are outside the ONLY sounds are a few birds and insect noises. From inside one day I heard a bee fly by outside--that is how still it is. Test lots of fun things to do are within 45 minutes and good food and hiking sites and tours and spas and interesting museums and shopping. The casita is simple and beautifully furnished--more elegant than the photos look with a gorgeous leather sofa and burnished floor. Bed is comfortable, great showers and nice lighting. Well equipped kitchen. The hot tub was fantastic in a great location. Could not be better!

Beautiful house, nice view of the lake

  • 5 of 5

Let me start bij stressing that Carolyn has been great to work with from the very beginning.

Very nice, very friendly, fast to respond to questions with useful information.

The Casita is beautifully designed in a kind of half circle.

Very tastefully decorated with art inside and outside as well.

I loved the furniture especially the bed with the beautiful paint.

Large tv with many channels, good WiFi (you can sit at the table outside and it still works perfectly), wonderful high bed with firm mattress.

I liked the light for the toilet with a dimmer so you could leave it on at night burning very faintly - just enough to find your way.

Fully stocked kitchen, 5 gallon water dispenser.

I very much appreciated the reference guide with helpful hints on where to shop and suggestions for things to do. I also loved the skylights in the house.

Plenty of sockets for your gadgets.

I did not use the hot tub or make any fires, nor did I find a way to scramble down to the lake (my scrambling days are pretty much over anyway) so I have no opinion there.

I saw a few cute bunnies and two cute small lizards (a Whiptail and a Fence lizard).

I heard birds, didn't see many close to the house.

Saw lots when driving to and from the house. Also saw a mother deer with two fawns on my last day (they jumped back over the fence) and there were all those adorable prairiedogs of course.

What I had not expected because it is not shown on the photos and there is only talk of 'privacy' in the ad, is that there would be another house (also a rental) standing very close by (about 100 yards). Unless you look strictly to the West it is always there in your line of vision when you look at the lake. This may not bother everyone but next guests may want to know.

Also a lot of noise from the speed boats and jetski's on the lake during weekends. On those days it is only really quiet the first few hours of the day and at night.

I stayed here during Labor Day weekend and on the Tuesday I saw and heard just a couple of boats go by while on the weekend the traffic was heavy! as was the noise!

Having said that: the view *is* awesome!

I love how the rocks change colours all the time. And how with the sun changing position you suddenly see a new layer behind another layer that you didn't see before.

Owner's Response: Hello Jeanne, We certainly enjoyed connecting with you during your planning stages and during your trip. I'm so glad you were able to experience Abiquiu and all its beauty. We thank you for choosing our home and for taking such good care of it while you were there. I'm also happy that you loved the location and vistas surrounding the lake. The mountains, lake and red rocks certainly are a sight to see. Because you visited over Labor Day weekend, I expect boat traffic was heavier than usual; generally we hear one or two boats on a weekend and nothing during the week. Our nearest neighbor is over 300 yards away, down a sloping hill and across an arroyo. I hope the rest of your journey is filled with peace and adventure. We also hope to welcome you back if your path ever brings you back to Abiquiu. Thanks again! Best, Carolyn

Absolutely loved it!

  • 5 of 5

We took my 84 year mother on a trip of her lifetime to New Mexico. The Casita is lovely, authentic adobe style, with hand-scrapped wooden doors and wonderful ceiling-to-floor windows in the living area. The bedrooms and bathrooms are comfortable and roomy. My mom really enjoyed the small writing table in front of one of the large windows. She dubbed it her "office" and used it to write in her journal. The views from the Casita are breathtaking! We all loved the quiet and the comfort of being close to mountains and water. I'll miss the resident cotton tails that came every day and the prairie dog village up on the mesa! Carolyn was exceptional to deal with....especially when we had to unexpectantly cut our stay short and return home before Hurricane Harvey hit. I can't say enough about this lovely house and area. Thank you for sharing it, Carolyn. We hope to return sooner than later.

Also so very sorry that Hurricane Harvey disrupted your amazing trip, but I'm glad you made it home safely and have avoided the flooding. Abiquiu and The Casita del Lago will be here waiting for your return so you can finish your adventure! It was my pleasure getting to know you and I've enjoyed our communications. Best, Carolyn
