"It's the most wonderful place you can imagine. It's so beautiful there. It's ridiculous." Georgia O'Keeffe on Abiquiu.
Since opening our doors in 2010, The Casita del Lago has had the pleasure of welcoming guests from all over the world who find this hidden gem and choose this lakefront home as their home base while visiting Northern New Mexico. Guests from as close as Santa Fe and as far away as New Zealand have discovered this spot in paradise, and many of them return year after year. We look forward to welcoming you, also, to our family of guests and to being a part of your visit to our beautiful Abiquiu community.
We built The Casita del Lago (Little House on the Lake) with great attention to quality and beauty. Located on lakefront property on Abiquiu Lake, 70 miles north of Santa Fe, the custom adobe style home is situated on 22 acres in the heart of Georgia O'Keeffe territory. The home is surrounded by majestic views of Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River, Cerro Pedernal, million-year-old red rocks, the Jemez Mountains and Carson National Forest. You will be in awe as you watch the sun rise and set.
We sandblasted the rocky shore above Abiquiu Lake to create the perfect location to build the home, with views staring out to the lake and Chama River, Ghost Ranch, Cerro Pedernal, and Carson National Forest. Our guests have described it as "the most beautiful place on earth", "nirvana" and "the best vacation rental home they have ever stayed at". It is a special place, on special land, where you can truly experience the beauty and peace of The Land of Enchantment.
The home has two bedrooms, two baths, a full and modern kitchen, an open concept family room, desk area and dining area, fireplace and laundry facilities. Outside, you will find heated patios, amazing spots to sit and take in the views, a BBQ grill, a hot tub built into the rocks, a fire pit overlooking the arroyo, a hiking path to the lake, 22 acres to explore, and a lakefront cove perfect for fishing and swimming. If you have kayaks, launch them at the nearby boat launch.
With 1,100 square feet of living space your vacation home will comfortably accommodate up to 6 people. The hand-carved wooden doors lead you into the open concept living space with comfortable couches, a fireplace, a desk, and bookshelf with games, puzzles and books. You will be welcomed by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake, the indigenous stone fireplace that warms the family room, and the authentic and comfortable furnishings. If you must, you can view cable TV on two high-definition TVs, use the complimentary WIFI or hook your phone up to the docking speaker system for music.
The kitchen was remodeled in 2018 and is stocked with dishes, pots, pans, glasses, silverware, seasonings, spices and much more! The electric stove, refrigerator with ice-maker, microwave and dishwasher are all high-end and stainless appliances. A BBQ grill sits outside the sliding door on the back portal (patio).
Enjoy your meals inside at a table for six that looks out onto the lake views or dine al fresco on the portal overlooking the lake. Or, be more adventurous and eat at the picnic table located amongst the rocks and trees.
The two-bedroom suites are positioned at opposite ends of the home: the master has a king-sized bed, high-definition TV and ensuite bathroom and the guest suite has a queen bed and a set of twin bunk beds with a shared bath. Luxurious linens, plush towels and amenities are stocked so you can enjoy a perfect vacation.
Full size washer and dryers are in the home, along with laundry supplies.
The home is like no other in terms of design and amenities. Imported granite countertops, custom handmade Spanish Pueblo arched doors, imported Mexican furniture, resort quality bedding and linens, authentic southwest lit niches, handmade Kiva lighting sconces, plastered interior walls, radiant floor heat, top rated appliances, indigenous rock wood burning fireplace, air conditioning, modern technology, and furnished outdoor living spaces. The east and west portals are attached with heated floors and one-of-a-kind views. The southern portal just off the kitchen offers warm, sunlit days in even the coolest high desert New Mexico temps. We subscribe to cable TV and the fastest Internet in the area - and both are offered to you free of charge. We also include firewood, laundry supplies, BBQ supplies and many spices/seasonings.
Authentic southwestern art lines the walls – and every picture tells a story. We are proud to feature several works by local artist Brian Thomas who recreates Abiquiú vistas using rock, and Colorado artist Betty Arndt.
As wonderful as the home is indoors, it is just as amazing when you step outside. Lounge chairs facing the lake are the perfect spot for morning coffee. The outdoor table has an umbrella to provide shelter from sunny days. Chairs and a picnic table are located in various spots throughout the 22 acres.
A six-person hot tub is nestled into the rocks overlooking the lake – a perfect spot for star and galaxy gazing. Outside you can also enjoy the Stonehenge Fire Pit on the edge of the arroyo or enjoy the Chimenea on the portal. Explore the 22 acres of open spaces and settle in to one of the many outdoor seating areas. Hike down to the lake through arroyos. Bring your fishing poles, kayaks and canoes! Being lakefront property, we have our own cove at the water’s edge where you can swim, fish, explore or relax.
Literally, you will feel as if you have stepped into a Georgia O'Keeffe painting right from your doorstep! The location provides an absence of both noise and light pollution.
The home is located on 22 acres of private Abiquiú lakefront property in a gated community with lake access. The drive to the home with the incredible Sedona-like views is worth the trip in itself! You will be amazed at the views that surround you and you will want to wake up early just to witness the break of dawn. Then settle in for an afternoon siesta on one of the outdoor daybeds; or curl up to a book; go down to the water; start a gourmet meal; sightsee (if you must); horseback ride; photograph; hike the arroyos on your property; draw, paint, write, dream, and much, much, more.
The 6-person hot tub is nestled among huge rock boulders just off the western portal and it reserves its own spectacular views for itself, especially at night when the billions and billions of stars come out. For the more adventuresome, a short hike to the 'Stonehenge Firepit' at sunset for a spectacular outdoor viewing and nighttime fire atop the arroyo is a perfect setting for s’mores and your favorite ghost story.
We have a deep appreciation for the land and its history of this area - from dinosaurs, to Native American pueblos and cliff dwellings, to Spanish explorers, to cattle wrestlers, to ghosts and witches, to Georgia O’Keeffe - all the way to our current age where the past history and culture blends with the artist colony that Abiquiú has become.
The home is conveniently located to Georgia O'Keeffe's Home and Studio, Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Plaza Blanca, Cerro Pedernal, and the Carson National Forest. You will also want to explore the Purple Adobe Lavender Farm, whitewater rafting down the Chama River, horseback riding through O'Keeffe country, the Ra Paulette Cave Tour, Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs and Pools, Native American pueblos, and other amazing sites. Plan easy day trips to Santa Fe, Taos, Cumbres and Toltec Railroad, and Bandelier National Monument.
Of course, we also have guests who choose to never leave the home, and believe – like we do – that the location of the home on 22 acres of lakefront property is the highlight of their trip.
