Imperial era until the turn of the century After the pier, which was built in 1878, was no longer sufficient for shipping traffic, the public limited company "Seebad Heringsdorf" under the management of Dr. Ing. Hugo Delbrück commissioned the planning for a pier, which should overshadow everything that had previously existed. In 1891 the foundation stone was laid, in 1893 the inauguration was celebrated. During one of his stays in Heringsdorf, Kaiser Wilhelm II allowed the corporation to name the pier "Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge". In 1942 the bridge was severely damaged by ice drift, in the winter of 1946 burned by the imprudence of a Russian bridge guard the bridgehead. The imposing part of the country with its wooden ornaments fell victim to an arson in 1957. In GDR times, there were already considerations for the reconstruction of the bridge, the project could not be implemented because of the shortage of building materials. Rebuilding After the reunification, the municipality succeeded in putting a rebuilding of the center of the bathing life in Heringsdorf into operation. In co-operation with the bank house Delbrück private privateers could be won in 1992, who invested 30 million DM in the construction of the new pier. Thus, the Heringsdorf pier is the only one in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which was built without the use of state subsidies. On 23. March 1994, the first groundbreaking ceremony was carried out with great interest of the inhabitants. In just 15 months of construction, renowned building contractors implemented the design by the architects Sievers, Piatschek and Partner, who took up the formal language of the old pier. The location and size of the pier required special foundation measures. The land building behind the dunes was built with a flat foundation on strip foundations. The bridge parts in the beach and water area, however, had to be founded deep. For this purpose, open tubular steel piles were driven down from a jack-up platform down to 10 meters deep into the load-bearing floor. During the pile work, divers were on duty to investigate and remove underground obstacles. They fought u. a. against wreckage and large boulders (stones that brought the ice age to northern Germany). The pier as a masterpiece of engineering The pier is 6.30 meters above sea level and is one of the few steel structures of this type on the Baltic Sea (reinforced concrete buildings are common). On the 68 rammed piles are steel Einfeldträger with 16 meters span. Piles and girders presented the builders with major logistical challenges: they were transported by barges from Brandenburg to Świnoujście, where they were loaded on seaworthy pontoons and shipped across the Baltic Sea to the construction site. The jetty at the bridgehead is only 1.80 meters above the water level. Six application albums with bollards and sliding strips make it possible to dock the ships. Thanks to the solid construction of the Heringsdorf pier survived the heavy storm surge in November 1995, unlike many others, completely unscathed.
