Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Library, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 5-9)

This lovely 1890's Victorian home was recently remodeled to accommodate more modern tastes, but it has not lost the antique quality of the original. But subsequently, there are now 3.5 bathrooms, 2 of which have jet showers and walk-in closets. The kitchen is designed more in a professional manner, and thus is open and airy and easy to use, as is the creatively decorated large dining room. It exists in the center of a small village, and the house seems to absorb much of the outside noises, so it is very quiet, (on this niche of a street). There is a children's playground about 50 yards from the house and there are very lush gardens, both flower and vegetable in the front and back, and a large lawn in the back, plus a large parking area.

The owner and her assistant are both excellent chefs and are available for catering, though the town of Great Barrington has so many restaurants, that almost every taste could be satisfied! There are also several museums in the area, notably, the Norman Rockwell (7min) and Chesterwood (5min) to name a few, as well as jazz venues, the Arlo Guthrie Center, etc.

About christina glass

I am Ruth Adams Bronz, originally of Houston, Texas, but a willing transplant to New York and the Berkshires, have 3 houses in the village of Housatonic. The first one, I bought in 1972 and painted sunflowers on the walls. Then I had a restaurant in West Stockbridge, of regional American cooking (I wrote 2 books on that subject- Cornucopia, and Miss Ruby's American Cooking) and a few years later, established a similar restaurant in New York, which lasted for many years. I just ran back and forth to my house up here. In retirement, I rehabbed the shed into a studio and then bought the big Victorian next to my Sunflower House, and spent a few years rebuilding the Yellow House, with great pleasure. I love all my houses, and gardens, which are truly an oasis, despite being in the center of the village.

christina glass purchased this house in 1998

Why christina glass chose Housatonic

The house was next door to my primary residence, and the idea originally was that I would move over to this home once it was rebuilt, but I changed my mind and decided to rent it as it is a large home to maintain for a single woman. We use all organic products and we try to be energy efficient. We try to do anything to accommodate you if you need anything we can supply it. We aim to please we do offer a yoga space and a mediation space

What makes this house unique

Great walks in the village-especially in the graveyard, and up around the Housatonic River. The peace and quiet is great, but you still can hear the murmur of happy children playing nearby. The house lends itself well to entertaining and can have many people inside without feeling over crowded. We also offer an organic local breakfast lunch or dinner upon request with an additional charge

Guestbook comments from the manager

We used this house to film a movie and the house was more than enough space for 10 film crew and all the supplies that come along with filming. The pantry and bar was stocked full of stuff the bathrooms had everything you could possible need for your stay I would recommend this house to anyone and the movie is called the gate wide open I would give the host and the house five stars

Great house for large groups, well stocked

  • 5 of 5

We decided to rent this house while in the area for a friend's wedding. Originally we had 6 adults but ended up being only 4. The house makes the most sense for a larger party -- plenty of bathrooms and areas to share space. Chrissy, who manages the property, stocked the kitchen with more food than the four of us could eat-- this level of service was something above and beyond what we had expected so it's worth mentioning. The kitchen is very well equipped and would be great for hosting any group event (holiday, reunion, etc). Showers had great water pressure. House is old fashioned in decor, which seems appropriate for the historic area.

This home was perfect! Chrissie Glass, the caretaker is wonderful.. All you need to pack is our clothes.... Bathrooms are stocked with every toiletries imaginable.. The kitchen is stocked as well... She went to the store for extras.. Lots of room for you and guests to enjoy the home and not step all over each other... The bedrooms are large! Beds are comfortable! I enjoyed coffee on the front porch in the morning... Quiet street and neighbors are friendly!

I'm definitely going to stay here again!!!

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

What a great house. We went to Tanglewood for a concert, this house was just a short drive to Tanglewood. The house was stocked with everything you would need for a comfortable stay. Very generous. The refrigerator was stock with cheese and meats and organic fruit and juices. Wine and champagne. Thank you so much , Christine.
