Overview

About the property

Spacious 3 Bedroom House, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-10)

This lovely 1890's Victorian home was recently remodeled to accommodate more modern tastes, but it has not lost the antique quality of the original. There are now 3.5 bathrooms, 2 of which have jet showers and walk-in closets. Most guests prefer to enter through the back door as its the entrance closest to large back parking area, and leads right to the heart of the home. The kitchen; is designed in more of a professional manner, as well as being open, airy and easy to use. From the kitchen, leads a large, creatively decorated dining room and half bath. The dining room continues to a smaller collaborating area which includes a nice music player and our "globe bar". All of this extending into the living room allows for a very open, enjoyable atmosphere. It exists in the center of a small village, and this well-insulated home does well at keeping the inside quiet (on this niche of a street). There is a children's playground about 50 yards from the house and there are very lush gardens, both flower and vegetable in the front and back of the house as well as land owners right next door. This house holds a very large lawn in the back including chickens and an organically grown garden. Also includes a large parking area with some storage space in one of the garages.

The owner and her assistant are both excellent chefs and are available for catering- though the town of Great Barrington has so many restaurants, that almost every taste could be satisfied! There are also several museums in the area, notably, the Norman Rockwell (7min) and Chesterwood (5min) to name a few, as well as jazz venues, the Arlo Guthrie Center, etc.

Property is under new management, updated photos soon to come!

About Danielle Lis

I am Ruth Adams Bronz, originally of Houston, Texas, but a willing transplant to New York and the Berkshires, have 3 houses in the village of Housatonic. The first one, I bought in 1972 and painted sunflowers on the walls. Then I had a restaurant in West Stockbridge, of regional American cooking (I wrote 2 books on that subject- Cornucopia, and Miss Ruby's American Cooking) and a few years later, established a similar restaurant in New York, which lasted for many years. I just ran back and forth to my house up here. In retirement, I rehabbed the shed into a studio and then bought the big Victorian next to my Sunflower House, and spent a few years rebuilding the Yellow House, with great pleasure. I love all my houses, and gardens, which are truly an oasis, despite being in the center of the village.

Danielle Lis purchased this house in 1998

Why Danielle Lis chose Housatonic

The house was next door to my primary residence, and the idea originally was that I would move over to this home once it was rebuilt, but I changed my mind and decided to rent it as it is a large home to maintain for a single woman. We attempt using all organic products and we try to be energy efficient. We aim to please!! We do offer a yoga space and a mediation space. Please always feel free to let us know if we can supply you with anything in particular.

What makes this house unique

Great walks in the village-especially in the graveyard, and up around the Housatonic River. The peace and quiet is great, but you still can hear the murmur of happy children playing nearby. The house lends itself well to entertaining and can have many people inside without feeling over crowded. We also offer an organic local breakfast lunch or dinner upon request with an additional charge.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We used this house to film a movie and the house was more than enough space for 10 film crew and all the supplies that come along with filming. The pantry and bar was stocked full of stuff the bathrooms had everything you could possible need for your stay I would recommend this house to anyone and the movie is called the gate wide open I would give the host and the house five stars

If you're really looking for that family fun spot with exercise rooms, a game room, gymnasium, or a pool and hot tub/sauna, Berkshire South Reg. Community Center is only a five minute drive down the road with Simon's rock only about ten behind it. Opera singer Alessandra Marc stayed in the house and mentioned the acoustics are great for singing. We can also hold parties for whatever the occasion.

Beautiful Excellently Maintained House, with Great Amenities and Wonderful friendly service!

  • 5 of 5

The House is beautiful. The caretaker made check-in and check-out easy and pleasant. The house is welcoming and feels like home.

Each and every room is well upholstered, with a fine attention to detail. The formal dining room provides a grand table for a peaceful family dinner. The living room, with its area for meditation, library, and games, makes you never want to leave the house. The living room makes you want to just sit and relax the day away.

The kitchen is well stocked with every appliance, kitchen tool, pot, pan, cutlery, stemware, glasses, plates, etc., that you could possibly image. The kitchen was clearly built for a world class chef. It was a pleasure to cook in this kitchen.

The bedrooms are comfortable and decorated with their own individual flair. There are three bathrooms on the upper floor, each with its own modern shower, linens and toiletries. Two rooms have their own bathrooms, with one bathroom in the upstairs hallway.

This house was utilized by seven adults for a winter weekend getaway. Three adults shared the large room, with two adults sharing one of the bedrooms with a queen bed, and two more adults sharing the other bedroom with a queen bed. There was more than enough room for the seven of us. We felt like we each had our own individual space. There is enough space in this house for everyone to be together but find their own little nooks as well.

Each of the seven adults I was with loved different aspects of the house. One loved the glorious bath tub in the large bathroom. The kitchen blew the minds of the cooks. The beautiful proper bar impressed another. The modern showers created a spa like atmosphere for those that wanted to relax after skiing. The porch and the town, were inviting for a peaceful place to sit and wander.

We can not wait to return to this gem in the Berkshires, as our stay was like a magical respite from our busy hectic daily lives.

Ideal house for a family get together.

  • 5 of 5

Our entire family loved our stay. The house is stocked with everything you might want and then some. As another reviewer stated, the online photos don’t do it justice. The house feels bright and spacious as well as cozy and relaxing.

The friendly property manager, Danielle, cooked for us our last night there. She served chicken Parmesan, salad with homemade dressing and rolls followed by tiramisu. All of us, young children and adults, enjoyed every bite.

The only downside is we didn’t want to leave.

Our Stay in Housatonic

  • 5 of 5

Didn't really have any expectations coming in. Just looking for a place to get away for a few days and maybe get some skiing in. We were quite impressed with the property and the pictures on line do not do it justice. Kitchen and pantry were stocked with essentials. Nice Viking stove. We ate a few meals in and a few out in Great Barrington and Stockbridge. House was conveniently located and about ten minutes to the stores and shopping areas in and around Great Barrington. About 15 minutes to Butternut Ski Resort.

We came in on a Friday afternoon and left on Monday. Quick introduction to the caretaker and we were off. House has wifi with the only weak spot we noticed was the master bathroom. All bedrooms are on the second floor. The master bedroom has a queen size bed, a trundle and a crib. Off the bedroom there is a bathroom with a tub, a separate full body shower, and his and her sinks. All bathrooms were loaded with various shampoos, soaps and other toiletries. The second main bedroom had an attached bathroom with full body shower. The third bedroom appears to be a former library. It does not have a bathroom attached but a third bathroom is located across the hall from it. This has a regular shower.

Watched some TV. Cable provider is Spectrum which we were not familiar with. Did not watch TV in any other room other than the living room, but that TV did have HD. Large living room with books, DVDs and games and a card table. Large dining area which we used more for storage. Also eating tables in the Kitchen and off the main dining area.

We did have a couple of locals stay with us for the weekend. We did not know their names but we named them Lunch and Dinner. That would be the two chickens on the property. You have to be careful as they will try and come in the house.

Overall we had a great time and would book again.

Wonderful Berkshire Victorian

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for Christmas and had a wonderful time. Christmas lights decorated the front porch and a fully decorated Christmas Tree lit up the main parlor. Christina greeted us, toured us around the house and introduced us to the fully equipped kitchen, stocked with spices, teas, coffees and many other goodies. It was snowy and frigid outside but well heated cozy inside and the large parking lot and driveway were plowed early. The bedrooms and baths are very roomy with excellent showers, more than ample towels and linens. Comfortable furniture,TV, Internet, CD player, many DVDs all available, a wonderful place to spend some time,

Great house for large groups, well stocked

  • 5 of 5

We decided to rent this house while in the area for a friend's wedding. Originally we had 6 adults but ended up being only 4. The house makes the most sense for a larger party -- plenty of bathrooms and areas to share space. Chrissy, who manages the property, stocked the kitchen with more food than the four of us could eat-- this level of service was something above and beyond what we had expected so it's worth mentioning. The kitchen is very well equipped and would be great for hosting any group event (holiday, reunion, etc). Showers had great water pressure. House is old fashioned in decor, which seems appropriate for the historic area.
