Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, Two Baths, Lake Access, WiFi, W/D Unit, Sleeps 6-8

Rustic log cottage located on a private road right off the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. The secluded nature of the property offers the safe exploration of woods, streams, and the lakeshore for kids, dogs and adults alike. Almost a mile from the nearest public road, you can walk up the hill for the free Friday bands on the brewery deck at our neighbor Wagner Vineyards.

You will find this hidden gem tucked into the edge of a 15-acre grove of trees, streams, and waterfalls, set back just far enough from Seneca Lake. You might wish to walk up to one of the neighboring wineries to bring back a bottle (or two!) for the evening to drink on the dock while watching the setting sun. Stocked with wine glasses, information on Finger Lakes Wine, personal touring and restaurant recommendations. The kid's room has a stocked toy box, books, games, puzzles, musical instruments and some old-school video game consoles for the whole family to enjoy!

Retreat to the lofted, high-beamed and hand-cut log master bedroom with moon windows and private bath. Right down the hallway, you will find the kid's room, with two single beds and lots of play space. Separate downstairs bedroom includes a double bed, dresser, and ample closet space. There are two bathrooms, with the full bath upstairs and half shower downstairs. For entertainment, you will find shelves of books, with a selection of the best books (in our opinion) about the local area. We have installed a Roku that has basic Netflix and Hulu capabilities and there are a few DVDs and even VHS tapes. Linens and most other details required to move in are supplied. The kitchen is fully stocked down to the olive oil. Stop at a road-side stand or even pick your own Seneca Lake fruit and make a pie! And if baking isn't your thing, have Laurel make you a custom order for your stay. Special occasion cakes, cupcakes, breakfast pastries and more are available upon request.

A walk across the road, through the forest, and down a stairway takes you to the lake and the dock, set among other lake cottages. Here you will find a few chairs and a fire pit which you are welcome to enjoy as you wish. The vegetable garden is also an amenity for our guests. Take some vegetables to make a salad or grab some fresh herbs for a delicious dinner! There is a place to tie your boat during the day (launching and overnight mooring is at Lodi Point - three miles by water) and safe places for children to swim. The stream to the left includes a wading-pool in which generations of lake dwellers have splashed. Seneca Lake is notable for fishing: the world’s largest lake trout are routinely taken here. You can find boat and kayak rentals, as well as tours and fantastic restaurants at both ends of the lake!

This is a rustic home, built of all local materials and it was made to be lived in. Kids can leave their wet swimming suits on the floor, the dog could track in some mud, even a spill or two can happen and it’s not going be an issue. We are in the woods after all! With this being said, there should be an understanding that you may find some critters occasionally. Spiders like the safety of the house and sometimes a mouse or two will find its way in. (The cat has done a fantastic job letting them know they aren't welcome so far!) In the event that you do come across an overly friendly extra guest, we will come over and take care of it for you.

Great for family reunions, BBQ's, NASCAR Events, Wine Trail Tours, fishing trips and more.

The cottage is also a fantastic destination for romantic retreats, as we have hosted more than a few couples getting married at Wagner Vineyards.

A few families even lovingly refer to the cottage as their own summer home and return each year.

We look forward to your stay!

-Nate & Laurel

Here are some Guest Comments::

"It was fun to be in the woods but also have easy access to the lake. It was amazingly quiet all week long and swimming was great. Our day trips to Watkins Glen State Park, Taughannock and Buttermilk Falls, and Skaneateles were quite memorable." - Anne

"We had a great visit. The kids really enjoyed the water and the creek & everything about the house. The house was gorgeous!" Thomas

About Nate Schwartz & Laurel O'Donnell

We decided to move out to the lake house from Ithaca back in late 2016. It was the dead of winter, late December, and we looked at each other one day and said: "We should get outta town, go live where it's quieter." So we left the apartments that we were still paying for, and on a mission to save both dollars and sanity, we both decided to move in together; out into "the sticks" and breathe life back into this beautiful house.

Built in the late-1970's by David Schwartz, Nate's father, after he too had escaped the city life; it was the family home for a number of years. The last full-time residents lived here in 1985, and it has been rented out as a summer home for the last decade. David kept a tight hold on the property through the years hoping that one day, Nate would find its beauty and move onto the land. Luckily for him, that day happened and here we are! Now we are running the rental business, keeping up the property and making big plans for future expansions and additions. We hope you enjoy the changes we have made if you are a returning guest and if not, we look forward to turning you into one!

Why Nate Schwartz & Laurel O'Donnell chose Lodi

This home is almost entirely built from local trees and natural materials: red pine, hemlock, fir, and oak cut and milled just a few miles away. Its rustic feel and quaint woodsy charm has captivated guests for years and just calls to mind simpler times. 15 acres are yours to explore and you will never see it all! Its secluded location right off of the beautiful Wine Trail has you just miles away from the best food, wine and sights the state of New York has to offer.

What makes this house unique

We like to call this place sanctuary. It is a place to visit when you want to leave behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Time moves slower here, and even the trees feel different when they dance in the wind that comes off the lake. This is a place to find peace, to feel safe and to nurture love, and we welcome you to share it with us.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Ahh...Where do we begin? This week has been amazing. The cottage is exactly what we wanted, from the smell to the sound of the wooden screen door closing! This is our first real family vacation and we could not be happier with our choice. We celebrated our tenth anniversary here, and it was perfect! The people around here are also very kind

a beautiful spot, but...

  • 3 of 5

Rustic is a pretty reasonable term to describe this cabin. Yes, the location is absolutely beautiful! The views from the water are breathtaking. But, the first thing that struck me on arrival was that the place was not clean. When I rent through HomeAway, I expect to walk into a house and not feel like I need to clean the toilets and tub and wash down the kitchen counters and sink. The stovetop and oven needed work, too. The description of the place on home-away says it is suitable for the elderly. My friends who have physical disabilities found it difficult to get to the second floor and were essentially unable to access the beach area. It was also a bit disturbing to turn on the electric heater on a cold and damp evening and have the smoke detectors go off and smell burning wires.

With a little more effort in the cleaning department and some investment in furnishings, I think the owners could make this a truly wonderful place to stay.

Perfect week away

  • 5 of 5

Our week away at David's lake house was absolutely perfect. It was the perfect week away from the city tucked away between the lake and the woods. The house was so secluded and peaceful and had everything we would need. We spent the days by the lake or exploring around the area. We stopped by several breweries and wineries close by, all of which have gorgeous views of the lake. We even spent a day in Watkins Glen, only a 20-30 minute ride to check out the Watkins Glen state park and Farm Sanctuary, both of which were phenomenal. Sunsets down by the lake are a must, absolutely beautiful. At night we BBQ'd, enjoyed a drink, and hung out around the bonfire either by the house or down by the lake. We loved that we were able to bring our dog along for the trip, he was so happy and loved exploring and swimming in the lake. David was so kind and so helpful, we really appreciated all that he had done to ensure that our week away was perfect. We would definitely recommend staying here and hope ourselves to be back again soon.

serene

  • 5 of 5

The setting of this handbuilt cabin in the woods settles you into peace and serenity. It is rustic, laid-back, and comfortable. Everything you need is here. The master bedroom is perfect. We loved exploring the woods, beach and creek. Despite 90 degree weather, the woods and house remained cool and relatively mosquito-free. Campfires on the beach watching the amazing sunsets while making smores- how can you go wrong? David, the owner, was a great guy, so helpful and kind. We were welcomed as friends. It is a uniquely lovely property.

We absolutely love this cottage! This was the second year we stayed and it's exactly how it's described and the best of both worlds! It's a rustic cottage in the woods but a short walk to the lake and your on the water! The cottage has everything you need to make your stay comfortable. The location is perfect for amazing sunsets! My family truly enjoys our week there and we can't say enough about how great it is!!

We had an amazing time at this cottage. The description of the cottage was perfect and the owner was great. Answered all of our questions and made us feel welcome when we got there. He even had a bottle of wine from the local winery chilling for

Us. I definitely recommend this
