About Steve and Renee Morrell

Steve and Renee Morrell designed and assisted the builder in creating "Ren's Nest", named after RENee. Steve enjoys woodworking and created some of the lamps and other furnishings to emphasize a bird house theme to the log-cabin. Renee displayed some of her artistic ability by creating the hand-stenciled curtains in the cabin. Steve is retired from the Department of Energy, but continues to work as a consultant. Renee works in a real estate office in Knoxville, TN

Steve and Renee Morrell purchased this cabin in 1997

Why Steve and Renee Morrell chose East

Being native East Tennesseans, we have a love for the beauty of the Smoky Mountains. When we decided to create "Ren's Nest", we viewed it as an opportunity for a good investment, a chance to host our own family reunions and getaway's, and be able to share the property with others.

What makes this cabin unique

We particularly enjoy relaxing on the screened-in porch, nestled high in the tree tops. Although Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg offer many attractions, restaurants, and outdoor activities, we particularly enjoy being nestled in to "Ren's Nest", enjoying our family and friends, through conversation and playing games.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time visiting with our friends and enjoying all the many amenities. The house is very well-decorated and comfortable and I'm sure we will return many times.

This cabin is just wonderful for a family Christmas. It is clean, has everything you need, slept everyone in comfortable beds or pull out couch. From the tree up and mantle done, to pool table and hot tub, to space to feed all of us it was a weekend of wonderful memories. So convenient to run out to store if you need something. easy check-in. We had all ages, from 6 to 78 and could not ask for more, thank you Ren's Nest!!!

Not What We Expected

  • 2 of 5

The location is great. Close enough to get to the main drag in five minutes but far enough away to experience a feeling of peace and quiet. Except for a barking dog at a cabin down below for two days of our stay, our 11 family members ranging in age from 4 to 94 enjoyed uninterrupted time together in the cabin. The layout of the cabin worked well for us.

The cleanliness and maintenance of the cabin was not what we expected. When we moved in on Sunday afternoon, we discovered seven light bulbs out, very dusty conditions, especially the ceiling fan blades, and rugs in the main bathroom were dirty. After several calls to the main office, someone finally came out on Monday afternoon. The person or persons who came replaced only three of the light bulbs, did minimal dusting, and took the bathroom rugs from the main and lower floor baths, and never came back.

During the week we discovered the top heating element in the stove wasn't working and one of the faucets in the main bath would leak all over the sink if turned a certain way. We would not recommend the cabin without assurances from the owners that the maintenance and housekeeping staff have been instructed to pay more attention to detail, and the items I mentioned above have been addressed.

Despite our initial disappointment upon moving in, our family had a great time and created special memories for everyone.

Owner's Response: I was surprised to hear this very negative review. However, I take it seriously and have passed your comments on to the resort and asked my owner liaison to look into your comments. Yours is the very lowest rating we have ever received in the 19 years we have owned and managed our cabin. As alluded above, we rely on the resort for housekeeping and maintenance. While I could independently hire these functions, we do have the advantage of having maintenance on-site and our experience is that they quickly respond to guests needs if there is a problem. I am sorry that you did not have a perfect experience.

Awesome cabin

  • 5 of 5

There were 3 families that stayed in this cabin and it was spacious enough for all of us. There were enough bedrooms and bathrooms that basically each family had a level to themselves. A few nights we BBQ'd and had guests over and there was still plenty of space. We used the hot tub nightly so needed it filled which maintenance took care of ASAP. The pool table entertained the boys for hours! Having 2 refrigerators was a plus since there were many of staying there. Cabin was close enough to the parkway that is was easy getting to the parkway yet far enough away from it that you felt secluded from the congestion and noise the parkway often brings. Cabin was clean and contained all items contract said it would have. Since we had so many of us we did need to purchase ourselves extra soap, paper towels, bathroom paper and dishwasher tabs. There were a few minor things we needed maintenance for ( front door stuck, fan on porch didn't work, picking up trash and filling hot tub) and they were courteous and quick to respond. Communication with the owners was easy and they were quick to reply. We used the community pool several times and no issues there. It was close to the cabin but did need to drive there. The driveway did accommodate 4 vehicles and probably could fit 5 if they were not all trucks or SUV's. There are cabins in close vicinity of you but with the greenery and tress in bloom you felt secluded and noise from them was not an issue.

We would definitely stay in this cabin again and would recommend it to everyone needing a cabin that has square footage and easy access to the parkway yet wanted a quiet location. My favorite part was sitting on the back porch swinging on the swing while drinking my morning coffee and hearing the sounds of the outside! Thanks again Steve and Renee!!

There is no place like the Ren's Nest!

  • 5 of 5

A group of high school friends has been coming here for 10 years. We always look forward to our time together in January or February of each year. We have already booked for next year. The cabin is large, with 4 bathrooms (important to a bunch of women) 5 bedrooms and is so attractively appointed. We cook, watch TV, sit in front of the fire, rock and renew. Love this cabin and can't imagine going anywhere else. Thanks so much for sharing with us.
