About John

Kathy grew up in New Orleans, and has family in the area. John grew up in North Carolina, and met Kathy through their mutual love of sailing.

John purchased this house in 2008

Why John chose Mississippi

Kathy's family, like a lot of people from New Orleans who have homes and cottages in the Pass, moved to Pass Christian permanently some years ago to enjoy the sailing and beach. John and Kathy have restored 3 old homes from the 20s, and jumped at the chance to own a historic home from 1890.

What makes this house unique

The front porch of our home, plus the historic nature of Seal Avenue and the Scenic Drive Historic District, made this an easy choice for us. One block to the Waterfront Memorial park, with its beautiful view through the live oaks to the Gulf, and its well equipted childrens playground, plus 3 new lighted tennis courts. The short 2 block walk to the downtown restaurants and shops, one block to the beach and the beautiful live oaks of Scenic Drive, plus the marina and yacht club 3 blocks away, make the home an ideal location as well. Want to get off the porch (it's hard to do),go kayaking on the Wolfe River and into the bayou, or take in a show at one of the many casinos 20 minutes down the Gulf. or enjoy one of many New Orleans inspired eateries close by, from elegant to quirky, you cant miss good food. Or better yet, go to New Orleans for the day (1 hour 10 minute drive from cottage to downtown NOLA )

Plan to spend some time in Bay St Louis (7 minutes) shopping the many antique and local specialty shops (sorry, no chain stores), or travel 45 minutes to quaint Ocean Springs, with its local shops and eateries.

Save time to take the Ship Island Ferry from Gulfport 11 miles out to the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was the perfect spot to relax after Mardi Gras and the only regret was that the stay was too short. Next time will be longer. Thanks for letting us share your lovely house. We loved both porches.

Great location and house.

We had our 9 year old granddaughter with us, she loved the house, porch and location as much as we did on our second visit. Walking distance to beach, restraunts and shopping, will stay again when visiting the gulf coast, thanks.

Lovely historical house

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time that our family has stayed at this location. This house has so much charm and history. Our kids loved being able to stay on the screened porch without having to worry about bugs. The property is just a few blocks away from the beach and once you are there, you pretty much own the beach.

Southern Charm

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed The Porch House so much we didn't want to leave! We loved the all of the charm this beautiful and conveniently located home had to offer. With the history of the old south and and all of the modern updates, it was the perfect place to enjoy our gulf coast vacation. The beds were so comfortable and the nice cool air-conditioning was a reprieve from those hot southern days and nights. We were pleasantly surprised that in a historic home we could stay cool, have super fast wifi and a modern kitchen. All the things we needed to mix business and pleasure were available at this lovely home: bikes, beach chairs, washer/dryer, computer printer, bar-be-que, you name it they had it! The owners were so nice and organized, providing any and all information we needed to have a wonderful week at their home. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful and charming Porch House with us! We can't wait to stay again!

Wonderfull location and accomodations for a laidback winter getaway.

  • 5 of 5

For someone who never had used VRBO before John was very helpful in working out the process. The Porch House was clean, roomy and supplied with all five of us needed. The locals we met were friendly, interesting, and glad to convers with an out of towner. If we are on the Gulf again the "Pass" and The Porch House will be part of our plans. John and Carole

great place!

  • 5 of 5

Can't say enough about this home, appears to be the perfect location to the bay, local shops around the corner, farmer's market on Sat am, 10 minutes to bay st louis, 20-30 minutes to casinos, or ocean springs which also has great shops, around the corner from the beach, safe neighborhood, friendly folks, great for walking or biking which we did plenty of. Home has everything you could need to eat in or enjoy family, fresh herbs in yard for cooking also, plenty of space, owners great

to work with, easy to contact, friendly. Would recommend this to anyone. The park around the corner is great for children of all ages and has a sat am farmer's market along with the one near the harbor view cafe which is also on Saturdays. Quick trip to New Orleans , an easy drive of 60 minutes. We had great meals everywhere we went, Half Oyster shell near Gulfport was great, North Beach in the Bay was great, Steve's Marina very good, the Oyster Bar next to Steve's also very good, frozen yogurt walking distance, great olive oil store and tasting room, with amazing oils, book store, coffee shop, and other shops all within walking distance. Just a perfect location really to reach everything and still enjoy the comforts of home. We spent may many hours on the front porch, enjoyed the beach, home was comfortable, just perfect stay We are sure to be back. !!!
