Avon sits on an arcing sand barrier that is some 30 miles from the mainland. The isolation is immediate and blissful. Many come here to seek out the amazing birdlife—the whole of Hatteras Island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore national park. Oyster catchers wade the lagoons, loggerhead turtles dig the soft sands, while out at sea, you might spot bottlenose dolphins playing in the waves.
