About the property

Comfortable 2BR 2FullBath Lightpine paneled 2100sf in red rock canyon (Sleeps 6)

The cabin is located in the heart of the Four Corners area. If you like exploring red rock canyons, have an interest in the ancient peoples of the Southwest or just want to get away to a stunningly beautiful area to enjoy the peace and quiet while relaxing in the space of 35 acres just off a paved road in canyon country, this cabin will fill your needs. Make this your private getaway to a land filled with history and ancient mystery. This cabin feels remote but is only a 1/4 mile down a well maintained gravel road from a paved road and provides a base for taking advantage of all that the four corners has to offer. It lies exactly midway between Mesa Verde and Hovenweep and 5 min from great hiking at the Sand Canyon entrance to Canyons for the Ancients.

Situated along the year-round creek in the midst of the red rock cliff section of historic McElmo canyon, the cabin sits a shady elm grove, next to red rock cliffs and a Macintosh & Jonathan apple orchard. Long since abandoned by the 'Anazasi' who lived in the surrounding countryside from its mesa tops to its canyon bottoms; this canyon was once home to the ancestors of the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico. Their legacy remains visible today as is illustrated by the cliff dwellings across the creek seen from the cabin front porch and the pottery sherds surfacing as the rains and winds uncover buried layers of of an earlier civilization in the surrounding fields.

One of our neighbors,a professionally trained archaeologist, roams the surrounding landscape and is often available to guide hikes to nearby sites in the Canyons of the Ancients. Once home to Mormon settlers and farmers scattered along the stage coach road by the creek, the canyon is still home to cowboys and ranchers alongside the farmers, archaeologists, artists, stone carvers, horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, foxes, deer, grape growers, wine makers and the very rare occasional mountain lion.

Keywords: Cabin, large shaded porch, redrock canyon views, creek, hiking.

About Bernard

The owner and his Grand-kids. For many years I have had an interest in Archaeoastronomy, a blend of archeology and astronomy. I have made numerous trips to the Andes in Peru to investigate Inca ruins with my neighbors. The Anasazi people of the Four Corners region of the Southwest hold that same allure for me - only they lived right in my back yard! There are kivas, stone towers, petroglyphs and sun spirals within easy reach and lots of educational opportunity to learn about it nearby. We felt blessed to find this vacation cabin in the heart of the Anasazi country with plenty of opportunity to explore and to study the ancient peoples and their knowledge of practical astronomy. We hope you will enjoy the area as much as we have.

Bernard purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Bernard chose Cortez

This property has McElmo Creek running through it the red rock sandstone canyon all year long, an apple orchard, spectacular views and borders on the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Our neighbors are friendly, knowledgeable and handy folks: horse riders, healers, Andean & Southwest explorers, farmers, wine makers, fruit growers, and creative people. With sunny Colorado skies only 10 miles from great bars and restaurants in a real four corners small town with that out west county beat, a natural park, and wonderful hiking to Anasazi ruins just out the back door, but far enough from the city lights that the skies are dark and the entire sky is available for viewing.

What makes this cabin unique

Perfect views from the front porch swing of the red cliff rock section of McElmo canyon. The incredibly dark views of the night sky in the dry desert air, the solitude of being away from town, the slow and peaceful lifestyle, spectacular scenery, finding a new pot shard in the yard, watching the deer and fox, all the apples we can eat, good wine tasting just up the road - these are some of the things that make our Cabin in McElmo Canyon special.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time at your cabin and, after finding it easily from your directions, found it very clean and comfortable, with beautifully maintained grounds. Our stay coincided with the last day of the Perseid meteor showers and we saw many amazing shooting stars. My husband also took a cool time lapsed star trail photo off the back of the porch! We enjoyed spending time in the living room area in the evening, with the kids falling asleep on the couches while we waited for the meteors, as well as hanging out in the early morning on the porch and in the yard, too.

Thank you again for allowing us to stay for just the one night. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect spot!

Very comfortable cabin in a beautiful location.

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of four adults and found the cabin very clean, comfortable, and spacious . The great room (kitchen, dining, and living room combined) was a good size, making it easy to relax together. The owners provided a library of books and movies in case we got bored watching the big TV in the evening, but we were never bored in this lovely spot. The view from the porch was exceptional, looking out over a large field to a red rock formation across a flowing creek. There was a lot of wildlife to watch in the evening. The ambiance was very peaceful. We look forward to coming back next year as there is so much to see and do in this area, and the location is very convenient for visiting the many ancient ruins. On a final note, I noticed some previous reviewers were unable to use their cell phones. We had no such problem.

Great place to stay

  • 4 of 5

It was a great place to stay great setting quiet and peaceful and plenty of room.No problem finding the place from directions given. The only problem we had was getting a hold of Bernard when needed. The only way to get him was with cell phone when we had a signal. The land line phone to call him long distance did not work with the sprint card by the phone. But other than that we really enjoyed the place.

Owner's Response: I have a 4G cell phone booster at the cabin. It works for Verizon and AT&T. Unfortunately, the cell service away from the cabin is very poor. It has been improving up and down the canyon but there are still some dark spots - hence the booster. We will replace the phone card for long distance dialing. I have verified that Sprint phone card number no longer works - although Sprint never told us why. Local calls do work and you can receive long distance calls on the land line 970-565-5379.

Great location but not clean

  • 3 of 5

Loved the location and quiet. Would return but the living room and kitchen was actually disgusting.

Living room: We had to move one of the couches and underneath it was a lot of trash - so that means the carpet has not been vacuumed. Underneath the carpet mat in the middle of the room had a wet spot and who knows what it was from. So not sure when it was actually steam cleaned. New carpets might be better.

Kitchen: There was so much "crap" in the drawers and cabinets. They should be cleaned out. Like partially empty boxes, trash, really old spices and other items. It was scary opening them.

Bedrooms and bathrooms were okay.

Owner's Response: Living Room: The carpet was cleaned Aug 15th - roughly a month before your stay. That wet spot you mentioned was the remains of a spot cleaning scrub done the morning before you checked it - this type of cleaning is done whenever we find a spot in between full carpet cleanings. Kitchen: I looked to see what you were found "scary". Here's what I found open or "partially empty". -7/8 th of a Box of Quaker Oatmeal -3 packages of different types of dried rice. -Half package of country egg style pasta -Half package of thin spaghetti -Bag of dried Anasazi Beans -2 bags of Cumin type spice -one whole seed, one ground -2 cloves of organic garlic -Cayenne Pepper bottle -Ground Tumeric bottle -Creole Seasoning bottle -Garlic Powder bottle -Can of Coleman’s Mustard Powder -2 bottles of Chili Powder: 1 full and 1 half full -1 patial bag of Chili Mix Seasoning -Black Pepper bottle -Ground Cinnamon bottle (this one WAS old – June 2015) -Bottle of Salad Herb Blend -Bag of Chili mix seasoning -Bottle of Yellow Mustard Seeds -Skippy Peanut Butter – almost empty! -Box of Triscuit – almost empty (June 017) -Box of Taco shells (Sept 28, 2017) -Birthday candles -Salt -2 Bottles of different types of Olive Oil -Bottle of wine vinegar -Bottle of rice vinegar -Half bag of white Sugar (humming bird food) -Half bottle of vanilla -Bottle of light corn syrup -Bottle of dark corn syrup -Unopened Box of Posole Box of Grits Box of Sweet Corn Muffins Box of Idaho mashed potatoes Bottle of Italian Dressing Cans corn peaches enchilada sauce chicken breast Bottom line: I am sorry that you found this cabinet "Scary". I confess this was a surprise to us as we thought this was useful stuff. IT HAS ALL BEEN REMOVED . ALL THAT REMAINS IS A CLEAN EMPTY CABINET. You were correct in that we didn't vacuum under the couches every time we cleaned. Our cleaning person will now move everything in between rentals to make certain no trash is left. We are glad you enjoyed your stay in the peace and quiet and would come again.

Rough Country Cabin

  • 3 of 5

We arrived after dark; and , the property looked a bit unkempt as it was under construction.

The cabin itself was large, roomy; but a bit unkempt. We felt that the personal items and food items that were around should have been placed in a locked "owners closet".

We would not stay there again.

Owner's Response: We are adding a mud room, some storage space and an office to one end of the cabin so there has been some construction ongoing. Sorry to hear that you found it "unkept" as we do pride ourselves on guests finding it clean and spacious. The construction materials are mostly gone now as the project is almost done and as the drywall is being finished. We had been in the practice of leaving shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc in the bathrooms and some condiments in the kitchen. As of now, this is all gone into a closet and the opened bottles of condiments have been trashed. All the food items in the cabinets have been removed to leave clean and empty cabinets. We are glad that you would not stay again.

Perfect for the Occassion

  • 5 of 5

I rented this property for family/friends to stay for my wedding. It was absolutely perfect. Bernard was a pleasure to work with and was responsive to my every request. The view from the porch is breathtaking. The price is right and the accommodations are so much better than the Kelly Place located just a bit further down the road. (I rented both, so I know). My bridesmaids and I used this residence to prepare for the wedding so it will always have a special place in my heart.

Cortez cabin stay in September 2017

  • 4 of 5

This is a wonderful, quite property. Has everything you need in a home. No cell service for Verizon or AT & T, even with a cell booster. Stayed 2 nights while visiting Mesa Verde National Park. We did have a problem with our second night, arriving after being at Mesa Verde all day, and that was no water! Turns out the well pump went bad. Owner did give us a refund for the second night. Wish we could have stayed longer to explore the 35 acres. I would have given 5 stars, but for the water issue.

Owner's Response: We are very glad you round the property wonderful and supplied with everthing you needed. Yes, cell service in the canyon is spotty - it has been improving over the years as new towers are added. We do have a the best Wilson 4G booster available. It does normally boosts both Verizon and AT&T 4G signals to usable levels - text is always better than voice which can sometimes be pretty poor to unusable. I can't explain when or why. This is the best available solution for our canyon location. The well pump did go out suddenly and it took a couple of days to get a new one installed. That was done and we have returned to good water pressure. I do have 20 gallons of water stored in the basement for emergency cooking & toilets. I apologize for the inconvenience. We did give a refund for the second night due the lack of running water.
