About the property

Comfortable 2BR 2FullBath Lightpine paneled 2100sf in red rock canyon (Sleeps 6)

The cabin is located in the heart of the Four Corners area. If you like exploring red rock canyons, have an interest in the ancient peoples of the Southwest or just want to get away to a stunningly beautiful area to enjoy the peace and quiet while relaxing in the space of 35 acres just off a paved road in canyon country, this cabin will fill your needs. Make this your private getaway to a land filled with history and ancient mystery. This cabin feels remote but is only a 1/4 mile down a well maintained gravel road from a paved road and provides a base for taking advantage of all that the four corners has to offer. It lies exactly midway between Mesa Verde and Hovenweep and 5 min from great hiking at the Sand Canyon entrance to Canyons for the Ancients.

Situated along the year-round creek in the midst of the red rock cliff section of historic McElmo canyon, the cabin sits a shady elm grove, next to red rock cliffs and a Macintosh & Jonathan apple orchard. Long since abandoned by the 'Anazasi' who lived in the surrounding countryside from its mesa tops to its canyon bottoms; this canyon was once home to the ancestors of the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico. Their legacy remains visible today as is illustrated by the cliff dwellings across the creek seen from the cabin front porch and the pottery sherds surfacing as the rains and winds uncover buried layers of of an earlier civilization in the surrounding fields.

One of our neighbors,a professionally trained archaeologist, roams the surrounding landscape and is often available to guide hikes to nearby sites in the Canyons of the Ancients. Once home to Mormon settlers and farmers scattered along the stage coach road by the creek, the canyon is still home to cowboys and ranchers alongside the farmers, archaeologists, artists, stone carvers, horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, foxes, deer, grape growers, wine makers and the very rare occasional mountain lion.

Keywords: Cabin, large shaded porch, redrock canyon views, creek, hiking.

About Bernard

The owner and his Grand-kids. For many years I have had an interest in Archaeoastronomy, a blend of archeology and astronomy. I have made numerous trips to the Andes in Peru to investigate Inca ruins with my neighbors. The Anasazi people of the Four Corners region of the Southwest hold that same allure for me - only they lived right in my back yard! There are kivas, stone towers, petroglyphs and sun spirals within easy reach and lots of educational opportunity to learn about it nearby. We felt blessed to find this vacation cabin in the heart of the Anasazi country with plenty of opportunity to explore and to study the ancient peoples and their knowledge of practical astronomy. We hope you will enjoy the area as much as we have.

Bernard purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Bernard chose Mesa Verde

This property has McElmo Creek running through it the red rock sandstone canyon all year long, an apple orchard, spectacular views and borders on the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Our neighbors are friendly, knowledgeable and handy folks: horse riders, healers, Andean & Southwest explorers, farmers, wine makers, fruit growers, and creative people. With sunny Colorado skies only 10 miles from great bars and restaurants in a real four corners small town with that out west county beat, a natural park, and wonderful hiking to Anasazi ruins just out the back door, but far enough from the city lights that the skies are dark and the entire sky is available for viewing.

What makes this cabin unique

Perfect views from the front porch swing of the red cliff rock section of McElmo canyon. The incredibly dark views of the night sky in the dry desert air, the solitude of being away from town, the slow and peaceful lifestyle, spectacular scenery, finding a new pot shard in the yard, watching the deer and fox, all the apples we can eat, good wine tasting just up the road - these are some of the things that make our Cabin in McElmo Canyon special.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time at your cabin and, after finding it easily from your directions, found it very clean and comfortable, with beautifully maintained grounds. Our stay coincided with the last day of the Perseid meteor showers and we saw many amazing shooting stars. My husband also took a cool time lapsed star trail photo off the back of the porch! We enjoyed spending time in the living room area in the evening, with the kids falling asleep on the couches while we waited for the meteors, as well as hanging out in the early morning on the porch and in the yard, too.

Thank you again for allowing us to stay for just the one night. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect spot!

What a great location and cozy house!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here! The house is in a beautiful spot with fantastic views! Our dog loved the big yard for chasing sticks during sunset. The house has everything you could need and is so close (yet just far enough away) to so many of the places we wanted to check out - mesa verde, canyon of the ancients etc... A big thank you to Bernard the owner!!!

The cabin has everything you need. We arrived at night. The next morning we saw the stunning view from the large window in the living room. Bring your food and there is no reason to leave.

McElmo Canyon Cabin

  • 4 of 5

I loved the situation and setting of this vacation property!!! I am a country person, and loved the deer, fox, squirrels and even a katydid! The cabin is very spacious, and the furnishings very comfortable. Could not get the internet to work, which was a disappointment, but guess what? I survived just fine without it for a few days! We hiked Sand Canyon of the Trail of the Ancients....Awesome hike! Would have done more if time permitted! Would have loved to hike around the property, but there were no maps to tell us where it was ok to go, and where we might be on someone else's property. We went to Mesa Verde. The La Casita Mexican Restaurant was exceptional. The people we met in Cortez were so friendly. Had occasion to go to the walk-in medical clinic and found those people very friendly and helpful also. The apple orchard had lots of apples, and we trimmed up some for eating. Enjoyed our time there very much!

Owner's Response: Glad you too the time to notice the wildlife! I was there last week and the deer are abundant and love my fields and orchard. It's so cool the way they effortlessly leap the fence into the orchard. Sorry to hear that you had Internet issues. That could have been fixed by rebooting the system - had you let me know. It's simple as it just takes toggling two power buttons. Wish you had mentioned it when you were there. I will add those instructions to the Cabin Notes that I provide with tips to make staying more enjoyable and fun. Yes! Cortez still has that friendly small town atmosphere in spite of the fact that there are great Sushi, Thai, Mexican, and Farmfresh restaurants and markets and yoga studios and bike and boarding shops along main street these days. And the new venue for music, shows, and films at the Sunflower Theater is terrific. I almost forgot the great riding trails as well as hiking trails in the area.

Private, comfortable, good place to unwind

  • 3 of 5

We had some trouble finding the place based solely on the address and had to ask directions from neighbors (twice) primarily because Bernard forgot to send us detailed instructions. We had to search for the hidden key but once we found it things improved substantially. We really recommend arriving in the daylight! We enjoyed using the laundry, the glider on the porch, the WIFI and even grilled some steaks on the gas grill. All these amenities added to the pleasure of our stay. At first we were worried by the smell in the bathrooms but concluded that it is due to sulfurous water and we got used to it pretty quickly. The heat was not working so we called Bernard who told us that the pilot light had probably gone out and he would have his local maintenance person come over to relight it. In the end the evening was not cold enough for us to need more than an extra blanket so we were fine. We exchanged voice mail with Bernard who encouraged us to have some apples from his small orchard so we took some for the road and they were very good. If you decide to rent this property please be sure to get Bernard to send you his detailed instructions and directions.

Owner's Response: I am glad you enjoyed your stay. Yes, Bernard DID forget to send the "Cabin Notes" that he does usually send to guests. It has detailed directions to find the cabin - it's one turn off the recently repaved highway onto 3/8 mile of graded gravel drive. The is a lighted sign at the turn off. So bottom line it is pretty easy to find - day or night - IF you have directions. My fault for not sending them. Most folks do ask for directions before they show up. Also sorry there was an inconvenience in finding the key. The cabin was still in "summer mode" with the pilot light unlit when you arrived as there was a beautiful Indian Summer this year. Sorry it took a day to get that fixed. It usually is on all year but was turned off this summer for some repair work. Apparently the gas grill propane tank attached to to the grill was empty - there is a spare that could have been used - had i been asked. Thank you for refilling that empty one! I did reimburse the cost to you. Bottom line: Call me if you have any issues. We can usually figure it out pretty quickly. I do have a new cleaning person -sometimes forgets to bring the checklist which says to check the propane - but it is improving :)

Great Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. The property was wonderful, house clean. The grandkids slept on the air mattress, what a great mattress. the area was so was quiet. The deer came by twice a day. Up to five at a time. The neighbor dog came over to say hello. The grill worked great (after we went to town for propane tank). We noticed the addition he is working on, anxious to see what it looks like when its done. If you get a chance stop by the vineyards nearby, they are great.

Acres of beauty, grandeur, desert splendor, and much more to explore

  • 5 of 5

Sit on the deck swing while you view the colorful layers of the McElmo Canyon cliffs and an unending parade of wildlife - deer, fox, song birds, hummingbirds, chipmunks, lizards, and squirrels. There are ancient ruins within sight, too, right from the deck. This homey, spacious cabin is a perfect home base for visiting many National Parks, National Monuments, and other attractions within driving distance of the Four Corners area. "Trail of the Ancients" and "Hovenweep National Monument" are both excellent places for viewing ruins and scenery, and are close by. Also, take the short drive to Dolores, CO to visit to the Anasazi Heritage Center museum and hike the easy trail up to Puebloan ruins with captivating views. At night after a day of touring or relaxing, spend some time outside taking in the velvet black sky pierced with a bazillion silver stars, then open the windows of your bedroom for a cool breeze of pure country air, and let the crickets' chorus sing you to sleep. We have never had such a peaceful, relaxing, and experience-filled vacation as we did staying at this delightfully decorated, fully equipped, and oh-so-comfy McElmo Canyon cabin this summer.
