Overview

About the property

Comfortable 2BR 2FullBath Lightpine paneled 2100sf in red rock canyon (Sleeps 6)

The cabin is located in the heart of the Four Corners area. If you like exploring red rock canyons, have an interest in the ancient peoples of the Southwest or just want to get away to a stunningly beautiful area to enjoy the peace and quiet while relaxing in the space of 35 acres just off a paved road in canyon country, this cabin will fill your needs. Make this your private getaway to a land filled with history and ancient mystery. This cabin feels remote but is only a 1/4 mile down a well maintained gravel road from a paved road and provides a base for taking advantage of all that the four corners has to offer. It lies exactly midway between Mesa Verde and Hovenweep and 5 min from great hiking at the Sand Canyon entrance to Canyons for the Ancients.

Situated along the year-round creek in the midst of the red rock cliff section of historic McElmo canyon, the cabin sits a shady elm grove, next to red rock cliffs and a Macintosh & Jonathan apple orchard. Long since abandoned by the 'Anazasi' who lived in the surrounding countryside from its mesa tops to its canyon bottoms; this canyon was once home to the ancestors of the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico. Their legacy remains visible today as is illustrated by the cliff dwellings across the creek seen from the cabin front porch and the pottery sherds surfacing as the rains and winds uncover buried layers of of an earlier civilization in the surrounding fields.

One of our neighbors,a professionally trained archaeologist, roams the surrounding landscape and is often available to guide hikes to nearby sites in the Canyons of the Ancients. Once home to Mormon settlers and farmers scattered along the stage coach road by the creek, the canyon is still home to cowboys and ranchers alongside the farmers, archaeologists, artists, stone carvers, horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, foxes, deer, grape growers, wine makers and the very rare occasional mountain lion.

Keywords: Cabin, large shaded porch, redrock canyon views, creek, hiking.

About Bernard

The owner and his Grand-kids. For many years I have had an interest in Archaeoastronomy, a blend of archeology and astronomy. I have made numerous trips to the Andes in Peru to investigate Inca ruins with my neighbors. The Anasazi people of the Four Corners region of the Southwest hold that same allure for me - only they lived right in my back yard! There are kivas, stone towers, petroglyphs and sun spirals within easy reach and lots of educational opportunity to learn about it nearby. We felt blessed to find this vacation cabin in the heart of the Anasazi country with plenty of opportunity to explore and to study the ancient peoples and their knowledge of practical astronomy. We hope you will enjoy the area as much as we have.

Bernard purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Bernard chose Mesa Verde

This property has McElmo Creek running through it the red rock sandstone canyon all year long, an apple orchard, spectacular views and borders on the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Our neighbors are friendly, knowledgeable and handy folks: horse riders, healers, Andean & Southwest explorers, farmers, wine makers, fruit growers, and creative people. With sunny Colorado skies only 10 miles from great bars and restaurants in a real four corners small town with that out west county beat, a natural park, and wonderful hiking to Anasazi ruins just out the back door, but far enough from the city lights that the skies are dark and the entire sky is available for viewing.

What makes this cabin unique

Perfect views from the front porch swing of the red cliff rock section of McElmo canyon. The incredibly dark views of the night sky in the dry desert air, the solitude of being away from town, the slow and peaceful lifestyle, spectacular scenery, finding a new pot shard in the yard, watching the deer and fox, all the apples we can eat, good wine tasting just up the road - these are some of the things that make our Cabin in McElmo Canyon special.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time at your cabin and, after finding it easily from your directions, found it very clean and comfortable, with beautifully maintained grounds. Our stay coincided with the last day of the Perseid meteor showers and we saw many amazing shooting stars. My husband also took a cool time lapsed star trail photo off the back of the porch! We enjoyed spending time in the living room area in the evening, with the kids falling asleep on the couches while we waited for the meteors, as well as hanging out in the early morning on the porch and in the yard, too.

Thank you again for allowing us to stay for just the one night. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect spot!

Amazing Place, we loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was AMAZING - we've been to a lot of VRBO's and this was by far our favorite. The views are amazing, hummingbirds were too much fun, we had visits from a deer, fox, groundhogs and the neighborhood friendly peacock too! My girls loved exploring the property too, they are already begging to go back!

The house was very spacious and well kept. We used the kitchen a lot and it was well stocked.

It would be a great benefit to have an instruction book for the house on how to use the tv, where some of the hikes/ruins featured in the listing photos could be found, etc. For the record, the Sand Canyon hike was really, really cool and very close. From the house, turn right onto Road G for about 5 miles and the entrance is right across from Sutcliffe Vinyards (this info took me forever to find online!). Also we were never able to find the on-site ruins although we tried!

Even the drive from Cortez to the house had some incredible views and lots of ranches and farms. It is a good 15 minutes from Cortez so keep that in mind when planning.

Overall we had a great time and will be recommending this place to anyone traveling to the Mesa Verde area. It's especially great for kids!

Country Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Location of cabin was lovely. We had a gorgeous view of the mountains through the large picture window. We filled the hummingbird feeders and they came all the time. So quiet and peaceful, was great for relaxing. The cabin was well stocked with things you might need. There was a very large selection of travel info to help us plan our days. Had a wonderful time. Thank you very much,

Lynn.

Great view; nice location

  • 4 of 5

As you approach this property, it appears to be a work in progress. There was construction material around the carport area, rock steps with no railing and you enter through an unfinished porch or room. However, the house itself is quite nice, with a large open great room. Loved the gas stove in the kitchen , the very large island, and the comfortable seating in the living area. Wood paneling covers the walls and ceiling giving the room a closed-in feeling, but the view from the living area window is very scenic. As I'm fussy about beds, this one gets an A. The bedroom we used had a very comfortable king-sized bed and a private bathroom. We spent 2 nights there and I slept well both of them. As there is a second bedroom, two couples could easily stay here.

I had a little trouble figuring out the air conditioner, but a text and a quick reply from the owner solved that problem. We had no trouble in the heat of July keeping the place cool.

As our main goal in coming to the area was to hike Sand Canyon, this was a very convenient location. We also enjoyed visiting one of the local wineries. I know we'll be returning to this part of Colorado again.

Wide open spaces, amazing views

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time escaping the AZ heat at this cabin. We spent most of our time exploring the area during the day, then sitting on the back patio stargazing at night.

Perfect getaway for families!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four, plus a 5-pound "fur baby," looked for a place off the beaten path (and away from motels) during our visit to SW Colorado. This place was perfect. Not only was the home in good condition and beds comfy, the porch and grounds were perfect to keep our two boys entertained day or night (as well as the adults). Our boys loved visiting the nearby sheep, peacock and prairie dogs and us adults enjoyed sitting on the porch watching the hummingbirds. Our family loves to grill and we appreciated Bernard's grill, and the fact that he keeps a back-up propane tank on-hand! It was centrally located for our Mesa Verde visits, nearby trails and Bernard referred us to a great, nearby horse ranch for trail rides for a day we were there.
