We live in Chicago and spend the winter in the Bahamas.
John Gearen purchased this house in 2001
We have loved this area for the past 30 years. We vacationed there with our children and finally bought a place for retirement and to rent.
We love the relaxed lifestyle, the friendliness of the year-round residents, the lovely weather, and all the great activities: snorkeling, swimming, biking, bird-watching, etc.
The amenities at your home made our stay very enjoyable as we were able to cook, BBQ, or dine out as the whim allowed. The island is quite beautiful and we were able to rent a boat to explore a few of the other islands.
Steve was available if we needed anything; however, our needs were simple and we managed to find everything we needed quite easily. We loved using the radio and found it an interesting addition to the pleasures of Elbow Cay.
Hope to return another time if the fates allow.
My family and I stayed at Star of the Sea for a week in April 2016. This was our third trip to Hopetown. This is by far our favorite spot. The beach and ocean veiws are great, The deck and dipping pool are really comfortable and have plenty of room to spread out. The location of the home is perfect in relation to all of the restraunts and town, just a few minutes to any where by golf cart. The way the bedrooms are set up is really great, We felt very safe here and we look forward to another vacation at Abaco Star of the Sea.
My wife and I stayed 5 nights at this house in June 2016, and we would ABSOLUTELY go back! The grounds are beautiful and make you feel very secluded. It is in a very quiet section of the island, but it is very close to Hope Town, a convenience store, and several restaurants. You will practically have the beach in front of the house to yourselves, and having "On Da Beach" next door was much more of an amenity than an issue - nice to have good, relatively inexpensive (for the Bahamas) food and drinks right next door, plus they close down around 7 p.m.! You can't beat having breakfast overlooking the ocean and sitting on the back deck at night to see a million stars! The main house is divided into LR/DR/K/MBR in larger unit, with a double bed and single bed plus bath unit across the breezeway. Small cottage on the grounds sleeps at least 2 more. It was just the two of us on this visit, but we could easily see bringing the whole family plus a couple of friends, and everyone would be quite comfortable and have some private space.
The owner and property managers were excellent and very responsive. We really couldn't have asked for a better experience!
Our crew of 3 couples with our 17 yr old daughter and 9 yr old son had a wonderful time at your beach house. One couple had the cottage, another couple had the master bedroom and my wife and I shared the guest room with the Jack and Jill bathroom with our kids in the small connected bedroom. The configuration gave all of us our own space and was just perfect for our entire group.
The house had all the amenities we needed, A/C, microwave, TV, DVR, telephone, internet, VHF radio, pots pans, linens, beach towels, etc. The generator was very nice to have, since the power would go out frequently. The deck was huge, and was an awesome vantage point for enjoying the waves crashing on the beach below.
The owner and the caretaker Steve were both very helpful and informative. We were the first ones at the house after it had be been opened back up after being shut down for hurricane precautions, so there were a couple minor issues to be addressed, which Steve took care of quickly and efficiently.
Being on a beach was a huge draw for us, and the beach was even better than we had hoped it might be. Our kids spent hours playing in the waves, making sand castles and running and playing up and down the beach. At low tide, you could even walk all the way to town. Most days we were the only people on the entire beach, so it was like having your own private beach all to yourself. The last few days of our trip, the wind really picked up with 20 - 30 mile per hour winds. It made the ocean quite spectacular, with some very angry looking waves, yet if you were careful you could still get out in the ocean.
We found the location on the island perfect for what we liked. We were just a short cart ride to town, and had an easy ride to White Sound and Tahiti Beach. We were concerned about parking of our boat, since there is no dock, but had no issue at all tying up to the public dock overnight.
The main house was well off the main road, and the area was very quiet. There might be a bar next door, but I am quite certain we made more noise than they did! Actually, having On Da Beach Bar next door was a huge plus. We went over there nearly every day for frozen drinks and the best fish melt sandwiches of all time!
I would not hesitate to recommend this beach house or stay here again. It was fantastic.
My daughter and I spent five nights at "Star of the Sea" and wish we could have stayed five more. Beginning with the planning of our trip, the owner responded in a timely manner and answered all our questions and made sure the property manager on site was available when we arrived. The layout of the house is great for people who like their space with the middle of the house holding the kitchen, dining area and living room, while the two bedrooms flank that space. The house is RIGHT on the ocean so you hear and smell the surf, enjoy the breeze and walk on the sand. We sat out on the deck and swam in the pool every day. The location is good because it is close to town, near a restaurant and grocery store and a ways up the road towards mid island. We hung out at Tahiti Beach twice, had lunch at Fire Fly Resort twice, ordered Bloody Mary's at On Da Beach twice and rented SUP boards to check out the light house and other side of the island( just once). We love Elbow Cay and hope to come back next year for a longer stay.
We traveled to Elbow Cay for my daughter's wedding and couldn't have asked for a better house for our stay. Our group included my husband and I , three adult children and my son's girlfriend. The bedrooms plus the cottage were perfectly separated to give everyone their own private space. And the living area was perfect to gather a few relatives together for a dinner. It was great to be a short walk/ride from Hopetown. We loved the beach in front of the house, and it was a beautiful walk down the beach to the lodge where many of our wedding guests stayed. We only managed one visit to On Da Beach next door, but wished we could have made it over there more often. Absolutely no noise at all from the restaurant; we couldn't even see it from the house. The owner and caretaker were both great to work with. All in all, we loved it and we would recommend it without hesitation!
Great place! Incredible view and was really convenient. The caretaker and owner, along with Hopetown Hideaways were extremely nice and responsive. If you want a nice relaxing vacation overlooking the Atlantic the place to go!
thanks so much
