White Fence is a truly unique vacation property. The property is a compilation of restored circa 1900 farm buildings just one block south of one of the most quaint villages in the Upper Midwest. The Village of Suttons Bay has deluxe shopping, art galleries and good restaurants abound. White Fence is within walking distance of it all and centrally located for touring all of scenic Leelanau County and its multitude of wineries, fine restaurants, charming villages and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore Park.
White Fence is a small and quiet property which has been meticulously renovated. The guest suite is artfully done with privacy, quiet and magnificent views of the bay kept in mind. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with seating areas throughout including private decks on the beach. Night star gazing is memorable.
You will find specialty food items and beverages in your refrigerator when you arrive. But directly across the street from White Fence is a gourmet grocery store which specializes in local produce and houses an extensive wine selection where the sommelier can describe to you the award-winning local wines. There is an outdoor kitchen area at White Fence with a charcoal grill should you decide to cook and hot plate for sautéing and boiling.
Also directly across the street, is the Leelanau Trail, an extensive biking, walking and running trail. It offers miles of scenic enjoyment. In the winter months, the Trail is groomed for cross country skiing.
White Fence was opened for business on July 4th, 2010 and has been pleasing guests ever since.

We stumbled onto Northern Michigan in the mid-1970's and fell in love with the crystal-clear waters of the upper Great Lakes. The Caribbean-like colors range from deep navy blue to teal green and you can see the beautiful sand bottoms at 40 foot depths. We were hooked and vacationed here every year, then moved here full-time in 2002 when we bought White Fence. My architect husband spotted this property over 20 years ago and knew it had untapped potential. I am a photographer and will never run out of beautiful things to photograph in this area. It's a special place.
Kathy purchased this cottage in 2002
Leelanau County has so many beautiful vistas ranging from rural cherry orchards to vineyards to islands to seashores to cool villages we sometimes wonder why everyone doesn't live here. It is scenic in all four seasons. Springs brings the cherry blossoms, summer the cool clear air and joy of the water, fall a color array the would put Vermont to shame and winter is simply a wonderland. On top of that, the restaurants are spectacular.
We pay unique attention to the small details that will make your stay special. The linens are cool to the touch. The tasty treats are unique. And the views can not be beat.
It was amazing! We stayed at the White Fence Carriage Suite for six nights and hated to leave. The suite is beautiful, peacefully located, and exceptionally clean. Waking up in the morning and looking out at the bay was incredible. The owners are wonderful people who really care about keeping their property pristine. They left us a welcome assortment of food items that enabled us to eat in that evening and relax after our trip. So thoughtful and appreciated. The suite is private, yet located within walking distance to town and a gourmet grocery store. There are so many wonderful places to visit in the area-- Wineries, Great restaurants, Sleeping Bear Dunes, etc. We were so happy staying here. You will be also.
We have been coming up to the Suttons Bay area for many years to visit
family and have stayed at six different properties or cottages. We must say
that White Fence is by far the BEST place we have stayed. We loved being
close to town to allow us to walk into town for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner,
and Shopping. The “Carriage House” is a five star cottage. We loved the
visitors gift basket too….no need to run out for coffee or snacks! Thank
you. We didn’t get a chance to try the water but the beach area is very nice
with three seating areas, the water is so nice and clear.
Thank you again for your hospitality!
We’ll be back!
This was our 3rd stay. We come once every 2 years. It gets harder to leave each year.
Perfectly located. You walk about 50 feet to some of the best views in Northern Michigan. Sutton’s Bay always has a great tableau of ducks, birds, boats, sky and sun.
Kathy and Duke are perfect hosts. They spoil you with little snacks and wine. Also, great advice and tips. They seem to be there when you need them, but always respect your privacy when you want to be alone.
You’re walking distance from a great downtown with old-school pub, pizza place, movie theatre, coffee shop and a couple of great restaurants, Martha’s Table and (our fav) 9 Bean Rows which has great cocktails, and amazing food. Mario Batali gives the lamb burger a positive review.
Even given all the fun stuff to do (including Sleeping Bear Dunes, fishing, kayaking and a nice new brewpub across the street called Hoplot), we find ourselves gravitating to sitting on the shore and reading after a daily walk on the Leelanau Trail.
Please avoid booking when we went to come back :-)
My wife and I stayed with Duke and Kathy for three weeks this July in the Carriage Suite, and we were absolutely in love with White Fence! What an awesome getaway property, and Duke and Kathy could not have been better hosts! The location is perfect and the view of Suttons Bay was incredible. The Carriage Suite is perfect for a couple looking for an upscale well appointed place to vacation for a couple days or a couple of weeks! The location is perfect for enjoying all that the Leelanau Peninsula has to offer. We were close to everything, and could bike to town or enjoy the bike trail and beach/ park every day. The Carriage Suite was very well decorated and provided all we needed for our extended stay. If you are looking for a must see/ do location...do Northern Michigan/ Leelanau Peninsula at this awesome spot!!!
Northern Michigan, particularly the Leelanau peninsula, is such a delight, truly one of my favorite places. Until now, as the rare Michigander who is not a skier (!), this was perhaps one of my first experiences during the glorious, gorgeous, arctic winter. My husband and I enjoyed a weekend getaway at this charming place, and would go back in a minute! It is warm and cozy, beautifully decorated, with a spectacular (unobstructed) view of the bay right across the road ~ breathtaking even in literally subzero temperatures with gray skies overhead. I could have sat on the couch and watched the water and the snowfall all day. But alas, we felt obligated to check out some local food and of course wineries, and the area never disappoints. The northern towns are so interesting during the wintertime, their sleepy time when many of the small shops are closed for the season, but amazing nonetheless. All wineries and breweries are an easy drive away (I think we found just one winery that wasn't open); we chose to stay away from the bustle of Traverse City during this weekend, and instead enjoyed the very local restaurants, which this time of year close up shop right around 10pm. The hospitality was wonderful. We were greeted with enough to avoid a quick trip to the store: cheese and crackers, wine, a few beers in the fridge, a couple of sodas, coffee and creamer for the morning. In the dark night of the frigid winter, Kathy met us and made recommendations for dinner; several menus available in the home. Since it was February, I of course can't comment on the outdoor facilities, grill, etc. I will say though that this carriage house is a beautiful little gem, in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. You might have room for a couple and one child on a couch, but beyond that it'd get a bit cramped. I would recommend this place over and over again, and hope to be back. The size of our family precludes a visit during the summertime, but perhaps my husband and I can make it our secret destination for a winter getaway! Thanks to these owners for sharing their exquisite property!
I lived in NYC for decades and my French husband has traveled the world...so... for better or for worse, we are two pretty picky people when it comes to traveling. After staying here four nights, I can safely say, the Carriage House at White Fence gets two big thumbs up from both of us. The view of Traverse Bay out the living room window is nothing short of spectacular. Oh, the pink dawns...no two the same...the changing light and colors are such good medicine for the soul. My husband is a swimmer and he loved taking a dip out front of the house in the crystal clear water. I read novels under the glorious shade trees---there are a few outdoor seating areas here to choose from. Inside the carriage house is a beautifully designed home. The owner is an architect---and obviously a good one. An abundance of light, views galore from the kitchen bar area, and the high bedroom ceiling is composed of stunning open beams. The chic decor is a mix of chocolate browns, white trim and lively splashes of red. There are also gallery quality framed photographs on the walls, taken by the owner. Wine, cheese, salad and other goodies were left for us as a surprise welcome and Kathy, the owner, went out of her way to provide detailed information on local restaurants and activities. She's a jewel and ditto for White Fence---a true gem. We'll be back and thanks!
Located in the heart of vineyards and cherry orchards and near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore.
