  • BEAUTIFUL PROPERTY, LACKS THE DETAILS.....

    BEAUTIFUL PROPERTY, LACKS THE DETAILS.....

It pains me to have to write this review, after all, Wind & Sea is a magical place. It's absolutely beautiful.. But I spent a lot of money on this place and I don't think it's too much to ask for the basics.. I rented W & S to enjoy a relaxing weekend and a quiet birthday celebration with a few girlfriends. We arrived to an open gate. Turns out the gate was broken. After unloading our belongings in the cold & rain, ( no rugs were provided to wipe your feet) we spent over 3 hours trying to figure out how to get the heat to work. I was surprised that there was no guide book of directions to the house. We never did figure out the heat. The house has an outdated tech system that apparently only partially worked. We also spent hours trying to figure out how to get the overhead lights in the kitchen to work.. We ended up navigating the kitchen in the dark. We requested a handyman who did come out the next day. One of the girls forfeited her massage at Esalen to stay and meet with the repair man and learn how to work the details of the house. Turns out, the overhead kitchen lights weren't working at all, and didn't for our entire stay. We had to cook dinner practically in the dark the entire time we stayed there... Top that off with ants that covered any counter surface we rested our food supply on. It had to go in the refrigerator or it was ruined. There was a big storm during our stay, no flashlights, only a few pieces of extra wood in the house for the fireplace, no newspaper was provided to start a fire so all of us girls were digging scrap receipts out of our purses to start a fire with... most of the east facing windows leaked so we were using our bath towels to clean up the puddles and keep the wood floors from being ruined.. the jets in the downstairs tub would just automatically come on at all hours of the day and night, even with no one in the bathroom... Since there was no guidebook or directions anywhere we never did figure out how to work the sauna.. trust me, we tried.. The sound system didn't work either so there was no music. When you spend that much money on a place, having the basics like Q tips or kleenex in the bathroom I thought would be a given.. The couches were stained and could have used a good cleaning.. We would have been much better off staying at Ventana or Post Ranch.. After all of our troubles, I had to ask for a discount. It's disheartening that after all of this inconvenience, they basically just offered a 10% discount..

  • Most beautiful setting for an intimate wedding

Most beautiful setting for an intimate wedding

My husband and I held our wedding here in September 2016 and stayed for 3 nights with my family in the home. The pictures do not do this place justice. The grounds are absolutely stunning and despite being directly on the coast we barely saw any fog our entire stay here. It is definitely a rental and needs some work to warrant the cost (e.g. two of floorboards in the kitchen were being held down with tape, some of the kitchen lights didn't work/were burnt out, no hot water in the studio, a too small amount of cutlery/glassware/dinnerware, etc.). Nevertheless our experience was amazing and perfect for our intimate 45 guest wedding. To any bride (+ groom) who wants an intimate wedding and are debating this place, just do it. You won't regret it.

  • Stunning property, very comfortable house and beautiful landscaping.

Stunning property, very comfortable house and beautiful landscaping.

Amazing property and view. Spacious rooms and very comfortable, modern and current interior. Solid walls so everybody has their own privacy. The Sonos system worked great. Everything worked. The kitchen was fully stocked with good quality dishes. We loved cooking in that kitchen. The landscaping is even better than shown in the photos. It is green and lush, lot more mature. The property is so big that 8 people can get easily lost and not know of each other. The path to the beach is in great condition and the beach is wild and breathtaking. We are a pair of photographers and every corner was a 10-star backdrop. The only drawback is that the night lighting of the exterior is very minimal and unless you have full moon conditions, you can't see where you are stepping. I wish the daily rate was a bit lower as we all really wanted to stay a few nights longer.

    Beautiful home, amazing scenery!

Our family had the privilege of staying at the Wind and Sea Estate for our first trip to Big Sur and it was absolutely perfect. The house is gorgeous and could not have a more amazing backyard. We sat on the balcony for breakfast every day and lounged in the backyard for sunset. It was so relaxing and peaceful! The rooms were all spacious with very comfortable beds; nicely designed and decorated bathrooms. Check in was a breeze and communication with the owner was very easy. They answered all questions throughout the booking process very quickly and even responded to questions during our stay within minutes. We look forward to another stay at Wind and Sea in the future. Thank you for everything!!

Breathtaking property made for the perfect wedding weekend with family and friends!

Breathtaking property made for the perfect wedding weekend with family and friends!

My husband and I got married this past September at the Wind & Sea Estate. We are from southern California and we brought the majority of our family and closest friends up to Big Sur to celebrate our marriage and had our wedding party stay with us at the house for the weekend. The Wind & Sea Estate became our number one choice once we found it on VRBO with the stunning photo gallery. Let me say, that you really have to see this property in person. Every view is breathtaking and the house and features itself were so warm and whimsical. It set the perfect tone for our wedding and celebration, and not to mention the most flawless and unique wedding photos (that don't take much decoration with all the beautiful nature and landscaping). The rooms and living areas were very comfortable for us and our guests and everyone was blown away by how unique the house and its grounds were. The only reason I gave this 4 out of 5 stars is because of the lack of communication we received with the property management. Ultimately, everything turned out great and we were able to figure out solutions to any questions we had, but there was a lot of confusion in terms of how to access the property upon arrival and such. Apparently we were supposed to receive all of the gate codes, wifi passwords, etc. via automated email the day of check-in, but because we had lost all cell phone reception upon entering the Big Sur area, we were very confused as to how we would access the property and its amenities. We even searched the house for some sort of renters guide but found nothing. The only phone number we ever received was the house phone (which became our most reliable source of communication during our stay), but we never had the option of calling the property management if there were to be any questions or emergencies. The only time I was ever able to talk to a person over the phone within the 12 months that we had the house booked, was after we faxed a sheet over asking they contact us in regards to the massive Soberanes fire that was affecting Big Sur and Carmel. I would certainly recommend this property for any big lifetime event or simply a family vacation, but hope that the management team will work to improve their customer service and relationship with their renters. My husband and I plan on returning to the Wind & Sea one day to enjoy Big Sur at its finest!

    A stunning, unique experience

This property is amazing--6 acres of rugged coastline at the edge of the world. Between the sauna, outdoor tubs, staircase to the ocean, firepit, and constant breathtaking views there was always something for us to do. We cooked fantastic meals, drank fine wine, breathed the fresh air, and soaked it up--we never even left the property! Definitely coming back again soon.

  • A stunning venue for a wedding

A stunning venue for a wedding

We decided to have our wedding in the Big Sur having travelled through there in 2012. When looking for venues this property ticked all the right boxes - a beautiful house with stunning views & sunshine. We used Sea Stars to cater our wedding & the food produced by Jamie and her team was top draw. All of our guests loved both the food & the venue. We had our wedding ceremony near the fire pit with the ocean behind us and it really was a stunning place to get married. We then moved to the decking area where the tables were set for our 50 guests. The huge longe then doubled up nicely as a dance floor. Being based in the UK we found it extremely easy to deal with the property owners & they were very prompt with their responses. I would highly recommend Wind & Sea for a wedding venue & I think at some stage in the future we will be back to enjoy the venue for a holiday.

  • Extraordinary - Magical - Beautiful .

    Extraordinary - Magical - Beautiful .

We stayed at the Wind & Sea Estate, and said our vows there on October 2, 2016. It could not have been more perfect. This place holds all the magic of Big Sur -- there are hummingbirds everywhere, you can take an awesome stairway walk down to the rocky shore and watch the blue ocean crash onto giant rocks out at sea.. On a clear night there are so many stars and the Milky Way.. Plants everywhere of all different varieties- a giant, peaceful tree to relax under.. A cozy firepit area to enjoy. Then, there are all these amenities such as the two copper tubs, the sauna, and an absolutely beautiful and comfortable house- despite the house being big, we felt so cozy and warm being there with family and friends. There are great big windows upstairs and downstairs to look out at the ocean. A wood burning stove inside, a grill outside, and a very accommodating kitchen for cooking. Everywhere you look inside this house, there is an interesting piece of art or something created from/inspired by nature. The whole house has a calm, happy, and welcoming feeling. When I think of our time there, my heart just fills with happiness and I want to go back. It was extraordinary, magical, and beautiful.

    A magical weekend away

    A magical weekend away

We used Wind & Sea as a home base during our wedding weekend. It was a perfect place to relax and spend quality time before our big day at Point 16. We lived there with 8 friends from our wedding party. In the mornings, we would do yoga on the deck. In the late afternoon, we would watch the sunset with cocktails and then walk down to the fire pit with wine and marshmallows. Of course, the impressive part of this house is the amazing environment around it. It has incredible ocean views and fits right into the Big Sur ambiance. I can see how people who have a smaller wedding would love using this as a wedding venue. As a place to stay, it was clean, comfortable, and welcoming. It had everything we needed to make group meals and have a good time. We would absolutely love to return.

Stunning. Relaxing, spacious, and luxurious. Poorly managed; many small annoyances.

This property could not be more beautiful. On top of the landscaping, lovely path lighting, and incredible views, we saw sea lions and whales. The house itself is stunning. The bathrooms are generous and pretty, the kitchen is roomy and functional, the den is cozy, the main space is lovely, and the decks are wonderful and perfect for yoga. Every room has lots of natural light and incredible ocean views. The driveway has plenty of room for cars. The sauna, hot tubs, outdoor shower, and gas fire pit are clean and in working order, and were truly delicious luxuries. All is as it appears in the photos - really special. Big Sur is, of course, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Nearby hiking, camping, and food is phenomenal, and the drive to and from this rental is breathtakingly gorgeous. On the other hand, we experienced many minor problems and inconveniences. The space was still being cleaned more than an hour after our rental started. In the middle of our stay, with roughly 24 hours' notice via email, we were informed that work would be done on the grounds, which meant the property was less than peaceful and private for several hours, and that some of our guests had to move their vehicles. The router provided did not work. We were able to connect a device to the internet via an Ethernet cable, but the lack of WiFi - coupled with the absence of cell service - was a significant hassle for our guests. We found the extensive, expensive sound system worthless; it cut in and out too frequently to be anything but a frustration. The ice dispenser in the refrigerator did not work properly. The dish drying rack provided spilled water on the counter and the floor. One leg fell off of the outdoor deck table, and we spent quite a bit of time working to reattach it. One nozzle on one of the hot tubs was very temperamental, and shutting it off was quite difficult. Overall, communication from management was sparse and not terribly helpful, and at times all of this became very frustrating. For the number of guests we had, and the kind of week we wanted, this rental was amazing; we would do it all again in a heartbeat. All the frustrations and deficiencies were ultimately peripheral to a lovely and memorable experience.Think twice about trusting this management team with any high-pressure event, however, and if you can't live without WiFi or the speakers this rental promises, double check that these systems have been repaired or replaced. 5/24/16

This was our second family visit to the Wind and Sea estate and we look forward to returning again in the future. The property has amazing views of the Pacific and excellent beach access. You can literally walk to Esalen and there are many amazing hiking trails in the vicinity. We love The open floor plan with kitchen living room dining room and wood floors. Bathing in the copper tubs and taking a sauna at night under the stars was also a big plus !

Great stay at Wind and Sea

Great stay at Wind and Sea

This is a truly excellent property. It is large, well landscaped and well kept. The views are panoramic with a near 180 degree ocean view, as well as beautiful views of the mountainous coast when looking north. From multiple outdoor sitting areas, access to a rock beach, different decks on the house, and several comfortable sitting areas inside, the home and property offer a variety of locations in which one can share time with friends and family or find a bit of solitude. Our stay had a few hiccups as the result of a storm the day before we arrived. The property manager handled this situation well, keeping us informed and providing us with several options. The house and property was clean and well kept when we arrived. All interactions with the management were positive and helpful. Some advice would be to bring your own food, bring headlamps if you have them (great for exploring at night), and bring some warm things as it can get quite chilly in Big Sur. Our only complaint would be that the knives in the kitchen need sharpening!

  • Beautiful location, far below average management

Beautiful location, far below average management

Now that some time has passed since our visit, I thought I'd write about our experience at Wind and Sea. I will post a full review in the next few days. First, the property is stunning. What a beautiful location and gorgeous house. The amenities are outstanding......copper tubs outside, sauna, amphitheater and fire pit....the list goes on. This was the perfect location for our celebration. Unfortunately a number of things occurred that created stress for our group, that could/should have been prevented, but ended up causing concern and lead to a less than expected experience. While we were a bit disappointed in the late time allowed for check-in, we understood that there had been a function on the property the previous day so we accepted it. Unfortunately when we did arrive after 3pm, the place was a complete mess.....not only was the house yet not cleaned, with a three person crew frantically trying to get it ready for us, but the grounds were a complete mess. There were tables and chairs, boxes of plates and glassware and much other party supplies still stacked everywhere on the property, and were left there for our stay. In fact, there were still about 10 or so picnic tables set up on the entire upper deck, making the deck completely unusable. Additionally, the sauna didn't work and had dead mice in it, which we were able to get fixed. On our second day, as we were getting ready to have a formal dinner, some guy showed up with a truck saying he was there to pick up the rest of the party stuff, tables etc. The timing couldn't have been worse, so we asked him to leave and come back the following day. This created a huge argument which we finally prevailed, however he took off in a huff. Also, some minor things should also receive some attention, such as the shower in the studio does not drain, audio system cuts in and out, the iron doesn't work and we had trouble replacing it.......... Again, I don't want to sound too negative, as this was an awesome location....just very disappointing that at over $2000 per night we had the kind of drama and problems that we did..... better management would have made a world of difference.

    Beautiful Destination Wedding Venue

Amazing. Enchanting. Unique. Serene. Magnificent. My husband and I were married at the Wind and Sea over Fourth of July weekend. Our guests were stunned by the beauty of the property. The ocean views are spectacular. The sound of waves crashing mixed with the sea gulls cry and the sea lions bark all come together to form beautiful music as you soak in twin copper tubs gazing at the star filled sky. I can't recommend this property enough. We will be back.

    Dream Wedding

    Dream Wedding

My husband and I had our dream wedding at Wind & Sea. It couldn't have been more perfect. The location is outstanding, breathtaking sunsets and overall a lovely ambience for a small and intimate wedding. We hired Wind & Sea for 3 nights. We planned this wedding 2.5 years in advance so we did go through a few 'property managers'. I have to be honest too, everyone was very slow at getting back to our questions, which at times was a bit nerve racking. But on the day, when we had some sound and dishwasher issues, management did get their act into gear and helped us get the place running smoothly for our wedding day. We were very grateful for their quick response. We had 30 guests attend the wedding from London and all the bedrooms at Wind & Sea slept direct family. The rest of our gets stayed at Fernwood and Big Sur Lodge. My husband and I had the master bedroom which was very comfortable and everyone else slept very well in the other rooms too. Going to sleep with the sound of waves crashing and seals 'oaffing' was very beautiful. Of course the stars shined so brightly too with no light pollution. Highly recommend the copper soaking tubs. I know many of our guests enjoyed a quick dip throughout the stay. We didn't have time to use the sauna but we did use the fire pit - this was a great place to sit around and drink whiskey late at night. Wind & Sea is 30 minutes from Big Sur River Inn, 25 min from Fernwood/Big Sur Lodge, 20 min from Ventana/Post Ranch Inn and 15 min from Deetjens. I'd recommend (if travelling South to the house) that you stop for groceries in Carmel. We hired a bus to collect guests to and from the venue. We used 'Outdoor Recreation Transportation' who were there for the whole day and very reasonable. Catering-wise for the wedding 'A Big Sur Affair' were the only caterers who didn't try and rip us off and did an absolutely sterling job of setting up and packing down. Wedding guests commented that our wedding food was one of the best wedding meals they'd had. My husband and I will definately be back, but without all the wedding guests! We can't wait to enjoy the place on our own.

    The Perfect Wedding Spot

    The Perfect Wedding Spot

We loved the Wind and Sea Estate! The house and surroundings were perfect for our intimate wedding and our guests (and we) were blown away by the location. It was even more beautiful than the photos. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the house does not sleep 10 - I would say 9 if you use the bunkbeds, and 8 if you do not. Also, the sauna wasn't working, which was a bummer. We also expected a few more towels/washcloths and kitchen things for the price we were paying per night. It is also strange that the bedroom on the main floor is open at the top, so that anyone in the kitchen/living space can be heard in the bedroom, and vice versa. Besides these things, we loved the property and had a weekend that none of us will ever forget. We had dinner a few nights later at the Post Ranch Inn and agreed that the views at Wind and Sea are much better (and so was our food from Sea Stars Catering!)

We had a lovely time at Wind and Sea Estates. It was the perfect location for our intimate wedding. The property was ideal for the ceremony and reception. All of our guests loved it too. The home and property are beautiful and have amazing amenities. My immediate family stayed with us at the house, which was nice to have them right there to help support us before and after the wedding. One of the highlights of the wedding was our guests getting to see and hear whales, dolphins, and sea lions right behind the house before the ceremony. It was spectacular.

  • Amazing (wedding) location!

    Amazing (wedding) location!

I am super late on writing this as we got married in April, but this location is amazing. I had booked it based on the reviews and videos, but didn't see it until we arrived the day before the wedding. It was absolutely everything we could've wanted and exactly what I was expecting (and then some!) based on the photos. We had our wedding party stay with us at the house and then the guests game in on the day of. We asked folks to try to carpool as necessary, but there didn't seem to be an issue fitting all of the cars in the driveway and on Highway 1. The views were amazing - every picture from the wedding was perfect with the backdrop - half ocean, half woods - who could ask for more? There was A LOT of wind the day we got married (it's not just a clever name) and the house was easily big enough to hold 50 plus people inside when it was too chilly to be outside. I will echo that the owners were absolutely amazing the work with - the house is extremely well stocked for anything you could possibly need. I really hope to be back at some point for an anniversary trip or a girls weekend to this perfect spot that I will forever love.

    Perfect Big Sur Wedding.

    Perfect Big Sur Wedding.

I should have written this review right away, after having such an amazing wedding at The House of Wind and Sea. The pictures and even the video do not do this property the justice that it deserves, truly. To be surrounded by nothing but the sounds of the sea and the wind, and to smell the crisp ocean air is literally priceless. You truly feel like you are in your own private paradise. My husband and I were convinced that Big Sur was the right place for us to get married, and this house was the perfect backdrop for everything that we had envisioned. With a view like that, plus all of the wonderful succulents and flowers in the landscaping, we didn't need a single decoration. It was lovely. We were there four nights, arriving as just the two of us for the first night. It was like a dream. To sit under the stars whilst listening to the ocean while you are sitting in those wonderful copper tubs is, to say the least, magical. It was just amazing to have a place where you could stay with your best friends and have a relaxing wedding experience, and not have to contain your celebrations within someone else's timeframe. The House of Wind and Sea allowed us to have a truly communal experience with our closest family and friends. The two pathways that lead to the amphitheater were perfect for our processionals and the stone walls were incredible for our guest seating for the ceremony. We didn't even rent chairs for the ceremony, we just told everyone to bring their favorite blanket or floor cushion and set up camp on the grass and on the walls. It was perfect and so intimate. The firepit was a perfect ending to the day, with everyone cozied up together playing music and singing together. The property is immaculately clean and well-maintained and Jason was wonderful to work with. Very, very helpful and accommodating. I most definitely would recommend this property (and have!) to family or friends, it's the perfect escape to recharge or to have your perfect, intimate Big Sur wedding. SO grateful for the experience. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

  • Perfect Coastal Luxury Getaway

    Perfect Coastal Luxury Getaway

This property has it all! Each bedroom is very comfortable and has a spectacular ocean view. The bathrooms are insane. The furnishings & artwork throughout the spacious house are gorgeous. The house is fully stocked & we thoroughly enjoyed cooking together in the large gourmet kitchen. Endless ocean views from every room of the house. I could have sat on the deck all day just enjoying the view! Even though the house is amazing, it is the setting that will blow your mind. There was so much to enjoy right there, that we didn't even leave the property all weekend. The walk down to the rocky beach below was beautiful, the large sauna and outdoor shower is great, and we spent our evenings sitting around the great fire pit roasting marshmallows. Best of all, the copper soaking tubs were heavenly! I can't imagine any better place for a secluded getaway! Anyone who stays here will be thrilled!

extended weekend, and wedding at Big Sur

extended weekend, and wedding at Big Sur

We had our wedding at "the House of Wind and Sea" 6/11/11. We arrived a couple of days early, left a couple of days after. My parents, my 2 sons (9, and 15) accompanied us. We all, collectively loved this spiritual property. This home has a spectacular location, just North of Esalen, with phenomenal Pacific views. It has beautifully appointed open interior spaces, wonderful kitchen, bedrooms etc... The properties' landscape design is gorgeous, and very Zen. The walkway to the rocky beach below is not to be missed. To us, the property (interior and exterior) was reminiscent of Post Ranch Inn. We had the most memorable wedding at this heavenly location, and will forever remember it as such. We will definitely return for future visits. Jason, the property manager was tremendously helpful in facilitating our booking/stay, etc... There is no doubt in our minds that anybody who stays here will have a magical time.

    Spectacular, spectacular !

    Spectacular, spectacular !

we just stayed at "Wind and Sea" for a weekend. This place is absolutely stunning both architecturally and its setting. The house with its beautiful soaring ceilings and drop dead full length ocean views is unbelievable. All the bedrooms are very comfortable with amazing artwork throughout the property. All the amenities are off the highest level. we enjoyed the sauna in the woods and copper soaking hot tubs with their ocean views. there is a beautiful winding garden that leads down to a secluded rock beach. The only time we left the property was for a couple of runs other than that we just luxuriated in this magical place.

    Truly spectacular

    Truly spectacular

This home and its setting is a piece of heaven. We had our wedding in September and the owner couldn't have been more accommodating. He helped us with names of a local caterer (Cheri Gladstone) and florist (Kate Healey) and with their expertise and our luck we planned our wedding in 2 weeks. As we drove down to the house and saw the actual setting, I couldn't contain my excitement. The owner walked us through the property and gave us instructions on how to operate everything. The view is spectacular. The grounds are magnificent. The amphitheater provided the perfect location as we walked down the paved stairs to join our guests on the edge of the Pacific. The kitchen was fully outfitted and the house aside from being better than these pictures show, was extremely comfortable and generous in size so that our group could be together or have an opportunity for privacy. The only downfall is that I don't live there.
