Philadelphia is a bustling city overflowing with activity, history, and culture. The 'City of Brotherly Love' is a city where many come to learn about the history of America's roots by touring Independence Hall, viewing the Liberty Bell, and visiting the house where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. What many visitors forget is that Philadelphia's history was written not just in a house that stood at Seventh and Market streets, but also in the neighborhoods where Philadelphians still live today.

While much of Philadelphia has been modernized and updated, some structures remain the same as they were in the 18th century when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson strolled through the streets of Philadelphia during the American Revolution. One of the things that makes Philadelphia unique is its architecture and real estate. Just one example of unique real estate is the Trinity houses of Philadelphia. Below is some more information on this uniquely Philadelphia structure and how it has survived the test of time.

What is a Trinity house?

A Trinity house is a three-story house with each floor containing one room. The Trinity house is believed to have originated in Philadelphia as early as the year 1720, and nearly 300 years later, Trinity houses are still found across the city of Philadelphia. Sometimes called 'Father, Son, and Holy Ghost' houses or 'Bandbox' houses, Trinity houses are typically quite small with an estimated 400-700 square feet of living space (our home has 700 sqft). Please be aware that folks were smaller back in the 1700's when these homes were built.

*The stairs can be challenging if you are tall or have mobility issues. They are very steep winding.

The Chestnut Lofts ...HomeAway # 179041 (faces rear of building)

The Chestnut Lofts is located is located in Old City which although is steps away from the liberty bell and independence hall also has a very lively night time scene with cafes and restaurants and bars. The pros of this unit is that it is located on the top floor of a 5 story building and oriented facing south toward a parking garage not facing chestnut street so it's much much quieter. Drawbacks being there isn't a waterfront view as you have in the front unit, it doesn't have those huge 20 foot ceilings and the main bedroom is a platform style (the second bedroom is fully enclosed). Please see link here for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/141917

The Chestnut Lofts ...VRBO # 477685 (faces front of building)

This unit does have a water view, has soaring 20 foot ceilings and gets great sunlight. The drawbacks being it's located on Chestnut St so noise can be an issue especially on a weekend night. Please see link for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/477685

(Panama St )Cozy Home in Historic Washington Square ...HomeAway # 3165419

This home is located directly next to our other home listing #583380 (Townhouse in Washington Sq) on a quiet cobblestone walking street. Both homes are nearly identical although "Townhouse in Washington Sq" was recently remodeled with a new kitchen and new bathroom. On the upside it has a washer and dryer where the other does not. You can not be more centrally located than this, very easy walk to Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square, 13th and Sansom as well as Old City. The location is hard to beat. Drawback wise these places are small and they have very challenging stairs.

Charming on Historic Street ... VRBO # 619713

My personal favorite of all our properties. This home is located 258 S. Quince street, if you google images of "Quince street Philadelphia" you will see it has been the subject of many a painting and photograph. The street with all it's cute little walking streets and off shoots is very European/ Old World. It's very tough to drive a car down, more of a cobblestone walking street, making it very quiet, almost an oasis in the middle of the busy city. It's still not too far from the historic sites but certainly not as close as The Chestnut Lofts are. It also has a private back patio with table and 4 chairs. Although it is a trinity, its much larger than the ones we have on Panama st. Drawback wise, Id say it has a lot of stairs and could be an issue for a toddler or someone that has any sort of mobility issue. Please see link for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/619713

Best night sleep

This is a cozy property that is located between 12th and 13th streets. Easy access to the historical sites and convention center. Loved staying there.

All in all a good experience

  • 4 of 5

My adult son and I stayed in this cute house for four nights. This historical property is very well maintained; its description is accurate and his owner is helpful and responsive.

Pluses:

Location. The house is 10 mins walk from City Hall and 20 from Independence Hall. The street is beautiful, quite and safe. The neighborhood is charming and alive. There are two supermarkets just four blocks away.

Cleanliness.

Neat furniture and decoration.

Comfortable beds.

Efficient Internet and cable.

Minuses:

As described the house has a challenging staircase that I wouldn't recommend for families with small children, old or tall people. After a few days it is possible to find it a bit tiring in particular because the kitchen is placed in the basement. Also be aware that this property doesn't have dishwasher.

Noisy air conditioner.

All in all our experience was positive and we would stay in any other of Josh's properties in the future.

Cute and cozy rental

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the rental for a long weekend.

Pros - location, we could walk everywhere. There were a nice selection of bars and cafes in the area. The unit was tidy and worked well for my family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids).

Cons - as others mention, the steps are narrow and steep. It was fine for us (my kids loved them!), but others may have concerns. As in any city, there's street noise, so it was nice to have white noise machines provided.

LOVED this very centrally located historic home!

  • 5 of 5

The 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed staying in this very centrally located home over Mother's Day weekend! The home itself is on 3 levels and was perfect for our family. Beds were comfortable, the kitchen is small with a table for 2 and has all the essentials. The living room was big enough for us to enjoy some time together. Stairs are a bit narrow and may be hard for older folks. The owner was responsive and extending. The neighborhood offers everything...A coffee shop and bakery around the corner, a plethora of wonderful restaurants (casual and fine dining), Magic Gardens down the street...and lots of shops! Perfect place for a weekend getaway!

Perfect location . . .

  • 4 of 5

Home was exactly as described. VERY comfortable sleeping arrangements. Josh was very accommodating and responsive. Stairs were tricky . . . but then again I am a month out from knee surgery and no one else in my family complained! Location was perfect. GREAT recommendations of restaurants in the house binder.

Warm and clean but with difficult internal access

  • 3 of 5

The unit was clean and well equipped with all the necessities we required.

The central heating was very efficient and the locality was great - lots of cafes and restaurants. We found this property very difficult to access the floors owing to narrow and steep stars between its 4 floors. We did find a number of issues with general maintenance - loose entrance door handle, hand rail requiring tightening, lower bedroom door almost un-operable and we found that with no double glazing or sound proofing it was extremely noisy at night from people talking in the street, nighttime helicopters and sirens. In spite of the above issues we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the city of Philadelphia.

Owner's Response: Hello Alister, Thank you for staying with us and thank you for bringing these maintenance items to my attention. As a host we have back to back bookings throughout most of the year and the only way we hear about something that needs attention is either by our cleaners or by our guests if they are kind enough to mention it to us ( albeit we appreciate it more if not posted in a review 😊? but non the less we do appreciate it). I read your review mentioning these 3 items this morning and by mid afternoon I had sent someone over to adjust the bedroom door, tighten the doorknob and tighten the railing. So all fixed thank you for letting us know. The stairs in these homes are very challenging, I beg people to read the reviews and our listing description so they are aware prior to booking. With regards to hearing the sounds of living in a city, helicopters, people talking on the sidewalk these are normal city noises that if your not familiar with staying in a city might take a bit to get used to. Thanks again for staying with us and safe travels. Josh & Miranda
