Enjoy Hearthstone Chalet Where Mi-Wuk Village Meets the Forest

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Space 1,600 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 1 - 4 nights

About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 12)

Our cozy, yet spacious chalet is located where Mi-Wuk Village meets the Stanislaus National Forest. The chalet is on over half an acre and has three levels with more than 1600 square feet. Mi-Wuk Village is above the snow line, yet only 150 miles from the Bay Area.

The main floor opens into a cathedral ceilinged room that includes the living room, dining room and kitchen. Two sliding glass doors lead out to a large deck with a beautiful view of the forest and the sounds of a stream. This floor has two bedrooms and a full bath. Upstairs is a large loft bedroom with a half bath. Downstairs is a large family room with two futon couches, another full bath and laundry.

The Stanislaus National Forest is Hearthstone’s backyard. Discover great hiking at various difficulty levels or just hang out on the deck and enjoy the view and sounds. The cabin has games, puzzles, and a hammock. Pinecrest Lake, which is 15 minutes away, offers swimming, boat rentals (kayaks, paddle-boats, canoes, sailboats, and motorboats), and great fishing.

The small town of Mi-Wuk Village is one mile away and Twain Harte has great shopping just three and a half miles down the mountain. Enjoy wildflowers in the spring. And in the winter, Dodge Ridge Ski Resort is only 15 miles away. Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and sledding are nearby.

The cabin easily sleeps 12 people. Each bedroom on the main floor has a queen-size bed. The loft bedroom has a queen-size bed and two twin beds. The two full-size futon couches in the family room make into comfortable beds. Each bed has a warm, down comforter and soft pillows. There are plenty of extra blankets. While we do have linens for your use, we recommend you bring your own sheets and towels so you don’t have to do laundry before you leave.

The well-equipped kitchen is stocked with basic spices, oils, and condiments and has place settings for 12. We have sleds in the winter and iner tubes for the summer. A washer and dryer are in the family room. There is a DVD hooked up to a TV (no cable or sattelite). You can bring movies or rent them at the Twain Harte Market Red Box.

About Margaret Hodder

Two families own this lovely retreat in the mountains. We go up as often as we can, though not nearly as much as we would like. We all live in Berkeley, CA. One family has two young adults. The other has two elementary school students. They keep us busy.

Margaret Hodder purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Margaret Hodder chose Gold Country & High Sierra

We all love the beauty of the Sierra mountains. We chose to be at the snow line so we would have a lot of Sugar Pines and Cedars, but not too far up the mountain so it would be closer to home. We like that it is only 140 miles from the Bay Area. The cul de sac makes it a calm setting.

What makes this cabin unique

The two sets of large sliding glass doors that lead to a deck with a view only of trees makes the cabin feel so secluded. We love the three levels and the three bathrooms. It means that you can bring up a whole bunch of people and not feel crowded. The location makes it easy to get to stores in Twain Harte or Sonora, and equally easy to get to the Higher Sierras and Pinecrest Lake.

Perfect cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay. It was just a friend and I taking a motorcycle trip. We used the cabin as a base camp and rode the Gold Country on day trips. Two comfortable bedrooms, so we each had our own. The deck and view were fantastic. We ate outside and hung out on the deck for hours. Very peaceful. It was exactly what we were hoping. The BBQ didn't have any propane so we couldn't BBQ. We ended up just using a frying pan in the welll-stocked kitchen.

Everything was neat and clean, yet cozy. My Verizon worked fine (two bars, good enough for Netflix) but my friend's AT&T had no reception. The bathrooms were very adequate with good hot water and water pressure.

If you walk down the hill, there is a small creek at the bottom (5 minutes, but it's steep - not a flip flop trail) where you can soak your weary feet in the cold water and enjoy a frosty adult beverage.

The .Mi-Wuk General store is not very well supplied and has almost no fresh food (no fresh vegetables, meat or fruit), so not a bad idea to stock up in Sonora.

I hope to stay here again soon and bring my wife. If you are looking for some peace and quiet, this is your place. Plus the cabin can comfortably sleep an army. Very good for two couples and a brood of kids (loft and finished basement, each with a bathroom), a get-together with an olde buddy or a romantic weekend. The rental process was very easy and the owner was responsive thru e-mail. The rental contract is short and easy to read and Docu-sign. It's not long and abusive like others I have seen. Our deposit was promptly returned with no hassle.

This cabin is not "luxury at its finest", but who wants that in a mountain get-away? It was exactly what it should be; clean, comfortable, spacious, and convenient with a large deck and a peaceful ambiance. FIVE STARS!

Beautiful rustic home

  • 5 of 5

We came for the weekend to give our young children some time in the snow. After an afternoon sledding, we came back to a lovely home with a nice fireplace with gas logs and a very comfortable living room. The house is in great shape and has nice amenities. It has three levels of living space, so you can spread out. The downstairs has a gas stove that makes it quite cozy. We'd rent it again.

Cozy Little Cabin

  • 4 of 5

When we first arrived, the power was out due to a storm. But when power was restored, we all enjoyed ourselves a lot. There were 10 of us staying, 7 adults, 3 children. Plenty of games and toys for the girls to keep entertained. Rooms were comfortable, plenty of beds for everyone. One thing though, the TV downstairs didn't work, or did the DVD player, but that being said, we had a lot of games to play and have family time which we all enjoyed. Everyone said they would come back in a heart beat.

Great get-away for 50th birthday

  • 5 of 5

For my 50th, my wife and I decided I needed to get away. Into the woods. Somewhere off the beaten path. Somewhere between Southern California (where my family is the remainder of this year) and Northern California (where I am now working). My brother in law suggested a couple of towns on the west side of the Sierras. We both hit on this nice looking and nice sounding place in Mi-Wuk VIllage that could sleep up to 12 (in case others would join our two families). Pictures were nice and the description of the amenities sounded very inviting.

So, I booked the weekend.

My wife and kids got there around 8 PM, and my brother in-law got there around 9:30 P.M....I got in close to 1 A.M. as I was driving in from a banquet in Sonoma County. I was bleary eyed and worn out. I stumbled in through the door to find my wife on the couch. She led me to the bedroom where we would camp out. The bed was cozy. I passed out immediately.

When daylight came, I went out to my car to get my big ice chest and then went back to sleep. I awoke a little later to smells of breakfast being cooked in the kitchen. The kitchen was outfitted with a full measure of pots, pans, dishes, silverware, appliances, you name it! Breakfast was eggs and pancakes and bacon and coffee. Good stuff!

The kids went out and played in the snow. Meanwhile, I explored the house....upstairs in the loft and downstairs, too. Televisions and VCR/DVD players on the downstairs level was a good place for the kids to burn time when they were not outside. Plenty of books and board games and card games were found on the main floor for the rest of us to burn time.

Dinner time came soon enough. I pulled off the long cover on the bar-b-que and found it started up in an instant! We cooked steaks on a low and slow process to allow us to get salad and mash potatoes ready. Great dinner, great zinafande, great desert (two cakes mixed on the counter and baked in the oven).

Alas, Sunday morning came and we had to clean up and clean out.

Oh, too brief a time to spend at this wondrous house in the Mi WUk woods. We all agreed we need to make a return trip someday and spend a week there!
