Waterfront Farmhouse and Playbarn with Dock, Mooring and Beach

Bedrooms 7
Half Baths1
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Farmhouse, 7 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10-12)

This large waterfront home sits on over 100 acres of private woodland and has space for family, friends and fun. The home overlooks Seal Cove and provides views of the Fox Islands Thorofare, a major sailing and boating waterway. The rental includes use of a private dock and a mooring as well as the “playbarn”.

Our home at Company Point offers an escape from everyday routines. The home’s large porch faces the water and is perfect for family gatherings, watching boats and wildlife including the occasional seal, osprey and eagle, or just relaxing. Children love searching for sea glass and shells on the private beach, exploring tidepools along the extensive shoreline, and swimming off the granite rocks that line the shore. Enjoy Vinalhaven’s many walking paths for daytime excursions and picnics. Or, if you prefer, you can kayak out your front door to see the wildlife first hand.

Company Point is a short boat ride to North Haven giving you the best of both islands.

The light-filled, fully-equipped kitchen was totally remodeled a few years ago with every attention to detail. A 6-burner Viking stove and large microwave make cooking a pleasure. Windows line two walls and provide views of the water and backyard where herbs and wild flowers are at your fingertips. Eat at the small table in the kitchen or in the adjoining dining room.

At the end of the day, share your discoveries and adventures next to the fireplace in the cozy living room, on the deck, or head for the playbarn to play ping pong, cards or an old-fashioned board game.

House is located off the North Haven Road at the end of Company Point Road. The property is a 15-minute drive from the town of Vinalhaven. The town has groceries, restaurants, gift and craft shops, a toy store, art galleries, a public library, post office, and the ferry terminal. Wi-fi is available at the house and the (R) Cafe or library in town.

About Judy Getman

I am the eldest of six children and my parents purchased this property in the early fifties. We've spent part of every summer here and everyone comes. We cook, eat, read, knit, boat, kyack, watch birds, swim, hike - the list is endless. It's a great escape, relaxing and a perfect vacation.

Why Judy Getman chose Vinalhaven

Because it is just the most beautiful place anywhere. It's peaceful and there's lots to do here or not, whatever you choose.

What makes this farmhouse unique

There's not a better place to enjoy nature at it's best. It's all at your fingertips. Our guests especially love the close proximity to the water, with kayaking and boating opportunities, as well as there always seems to be a lot of cooking going on!

Outstanding Vinalhaven waterfront location and experience

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week on Company Point in Vinalhaven. If you’re a kayaker, this home is a MUST.

The special features: its deep water dock; expansive water view of Seal Bay and North Haven Thoroughfare; a big deck to enjoy the view; large, smooth boulders for lounging and swimming off of; two excellent fireplaces (good dry hardwood provided) in comfortable, cozy rooms; mussels you can harvest off the rocks and enjoy steamed (in white wine with garlic and parsley!); a lobsterman who can deliver lobsters right to your dock in an under-water crate; and access to fantastic kayaking on the Mill River.

A few downsides: 1) The only shower in the main house is downstairs next to the kitchen. The good news is the Play Barn has its own shower. 2) No dishwasher. 3) No washer/dryer. But laundry services are available.

Our trip started out perfectly: The owner greeted us at the ferry in town so she could show us the way to the house and give us a personal tour, answer questions, and share a few great stories from the family’s past gatherings at the house. She also provides a very helpful “Welcome Book” with contact info, maps, the best hiking and walking trails; tide charts; tips; and favorite family recipes (try their blueberry pancakes on the electric griddle provided in the kitchen).

Give yourself at least one “night off” from cooking at the house and have dinner at Nebo Lodge on the neighboring island of North Haven. They were written-up in July's "Food and Wine" magazine. It involves a 5 minute boat ride from Vinalhaven (it’s free--just tell Nebo you need a ride when you make reservations). The parking lot and dock is on the northwest side of the island, an easy 10 minute drive from the Company Point house. Arrive at Nebo 15 minutes ahead of your reservation so you can stroll their gardens or relax on one of their porches with a cocktail before sitting down to dinner.

Another recommendation is a bike ride around North Haven. Bring your own bikes on the boat (drive to the little parking lot and call Brown’s Boatyard on the pay phone there to get picked up —don’t forget to bring 50 cents!) or rent bikes from Nebo Lodge.

We would absolutely recommend this house to outdoor-loving, active relatives and friends.

Car: necessary

The property is surrounded by dense spruce woods, ferns, and berries line the first part of the driveway. Large granite rocks line the property coastline - they're great to climb on. During the height of the granite quarrying industry, this was where the granite was offloaded and shipped out. Historic quarries line the driveway and you can swim in numerous quarries on the island.

There's music and theater events all summer, a flea market each Saturday - frequently with fresh baked goods, the best farm produce ever, and local crafts; there's a secondhand book store in town, a nice grocery store, a wine and cheese store, and my favorite art gallery anywhere.

Laundry facilities are available at homes on the island and boat rentals are available on the mainland so that you could sail to your own dock. In addition, you will need a car to get around the island.
