About the host
Hosted by Angela and Jason Kirkman
Angela and Jason have been married for 25 years. We enjoy cooking, gardening, and brewing beer. We have traveled extensively and love to photograph and glean recipes as we explore the world. We are incredibly proud of our three children, ages 19 16, and 12, and are very busy following them in their various pursuits. As a family we enjoy hiking, skiing, and camping in the Sangre de Christo Mountains.
Angela’s photography is on display throughout Casa Abuela is from our family’s recent two-year journey around the world. During our Big Field Trip, we hiked the Inca Trail, snuck into a dilapidated communist headquarters in Bulgaria, rode camelback through the Sahara, caught the swine flu in Istanbul, rode a dragon boat up the Perfume River, got chased out of the Grand Mosque of Uqba in Tunisia, lived on a vineyard in Portugal, were robbed at gunpoint in Bahía, taught at a tribal school in Rajasthan, biked through floating markets outside Bangkok, and communed with snow monkeys in the hot springs of Japan. (Learn more about our journey at www.thebigfieldtrip.com). Throughout our travels, we enjoyed lodging with local families, staying off the gringo trail, avoiding hotels at all costs, and generally trying to live like locals. When we returned home to Santa Fe, we decided to open our guesthouse to fellow travelers who crave a similar type of experience. We’re so happy to be hosting your Santa Fe adventure!

Why they chose this property
We fell in love with this property when we first laid eyes upon it. We were attracted by the unique and funky design of the structures and the tranquility of the tree-lined arroyo. On one hand it is on 4 1/2 acres and affords lots of privacy and plenty of space for gardening, and on the other hand it is a quick drive into town. In fact, we bike into the plaza area several times a week, often taking the Rail Trail, which passes close by out home.
What makes this property unique
Our guest house offers plenty of private outdoor space, which we always value when looking for accommodations, especially when travelling with children. The kitchen is large enough and well enough equipped to easily and comfortably cook a wide variety of meals. There is less light pollution out here in the South East Hills, and the stars are incredibly brilliant at night. Enjoy them while reclining in the hot tub.
We hope you’ll enjoy dining from Angela’s hand-made pottery and sipping one of Jason’s intoxicants—made with organic ingredients from our garden and juniper berries wild-harvested right here on the property! If you’d like more of Jason’s hooch, visit one of Tumbleroot’s locations in town or you can put an order in on his website and he’d be happy to bring more home to you. Feel free to take Angela’s pottery home with you as well, leaving payment in cash or venmo. Or check out her gallery—either in person or online—to see what else she has in stock. (Paseo Pottery also offers classes if you feel like getting your hands in the mud!)
