Casa Abuela~2 Bedroom Adobe with Cedar Hot Tub: Perfect for Families
Bright and authentic adobe with rustic charm on 5-acre homestead with flowering courtyards, cedar hot tub, disk golf course, arroyo hike, high speed internet, greenhouses, vegetable garden, outdoor dining, gas grill, and mountain views. Your hosts, Jason (brewer/distiller) and Angela (ceramic artist) will have a welcome basket awaiting your arrival with seasonal veggies and flowers from the garden, a sampling of Jason's libations, and you'll enjoy dining on Angela's handmade pottery.
The guest house is a 2 bedroom / 1 bath pueblo style home of 900 square feet (accommodates 4 comfortably in the two bedrooms, but a sofa bed in the living room can sleep another). It offers privacy, with a separate driveway and walled courtyard. We have been gradually updating the guest house, but you will find that it maintains its authentic Santa Fe style and rustic charm. Bright open-plan kitchen / dining room with colorful Mexican tile counters, and wood, brick, and flagstone floors throughout. It is fully furnished, and the kitchen is fully equipped.
The homestead was the first in this neighborhood and was built in the early 1930s. The 5-acre homestead includes three residences. “Casa de Kirkman” is the main house where Jason and Angela live. “Casita de Casey” is a small home on the north side of the property where our caretaker resides, and your home “Casa Abuela” is a separate guesthouse to the south with a private drive and private courtyard. Casa Abuela, was added in the 1950s and originally used as a goat shed. (We hope you’ll agree that we’ve made some improvements since then, though we’ve tried to maintain the property’s original rustic New Mexico charm.)
It has a wood stove in the main bedroom and garden views from the twin bedroom. Comfortable living room for lounging and a full and open kitchen for meal prep and dining. The fully-equipped kitchen is stocked with Angela's handmade pottery.
A cedar hot tub accommodates up to 6 bathers in another secluded courtyard brimming with trumpet vines and sunflowers. Perfect for stargazing or relaxing sore muscles after hiking or skiing on cold winter afternoons or cool summer nights.
The guest house shares a 5-acre property with the main house. The guest house has its own private driveway and walled courtyard. The hot tub is in a separate courtyard between the guest house and the main house, and guests have unlimited private access to this space. The guest house has a shaded portal for grilling and outdoor dining. Guests may explore the property and beyond, the walking trail, gardens and greenhouses.
The homestead is close enough to the plaza for convenience - a seven mile drive - but has privacy and plenty of space. Make yourself at home and feel free to explore the property. There’s a cedar hot tub, a disk golf course, an arroyo trail where you can hike for miles, and a large organic garden with two greenhouses.
We hope you’ll enjoy dining from Angela’s hand-made pottery and sipping one of Jason’s beers, spirits, or cocktails—made with organic ingredients from our garden and juniper berries wild-harvested right here on the property! (If you’d like more of Jason’s intoxicants, visit one of Tumbleroot’s locations in town or you can put an order in on his website and he’d be happy to bring more home to you.) Feel free to check out Angela’s gallery in Santa Fe—either in person or online—to see what else she has in stock. (Paseo Pottery also offers classes if you feel like getting your hands in the mud!)
Angela’s photography throughout the home is from our family’s recent two-year journey around the world. During our Big Field Trip, we hiked the Inca Trail, snuck into a dilapidated communist headquarters in Bulgaria, rode camelback through the Sahara, caught the swine flu in Istanbul, rode a dragon boat up the Perfume River, got chased out of the Grand Mosque of Uqba in Tunisia, lived on a vineyard in Portugal, were robbed at gunpoint in Bahía, taught at a tribal school in Rajasthan, biked through floating markets outside Bangkok, and communed with snow monkeys in the hot springs of Japan. Throughout our travels, we enjoyed lodging with local families, staying off the gringo trail, avoiding hotels at all costs, and generally trying to live like locals. When we returned home to Santa Fe, we decided to open our homestead to fellow travelers who crave a similar type of experience. We look forward to hosting your Santa Fe adventure!
Our property is powered 100% by the sun—because there’s just so much of it here in New Mexico! Caretaker Casey will be on-site to help handle any issues that might arise and to take care of special requests and provide recommendations. Angela and Jason are available by email and phone.
We look forward to hosting you!

Great host, allowed last minute reservations. Very nice welcome basket! Clean and comfortable beds. We enjoyed seeing the sunrise in the kitchen on clear days. Great location for skiing vacation.

Serenity in Santa Fe
The house is located just outside of Santa Fe which is secluded and very picturesque. Myself and two friends stayed for three nights and it was easy access to canyon road (art galleries), the Railyard and downtown. We were greeted by a beautiful basket of vegetables upon arrival from owners garden which were very delicious. The bed was comfortable and the house had a nice kitchen which we put to use for our breakfast and dinner meals. The cedar tub was an amazing amenity after a long day of sight seeing and the owner was gracious enough to let us have a sampling of his wonderful beer. All in all it was a great place to spend our weekend of art and adventure.

Thanks Armando!
It was a pleasure hosting you, Chris, and Kristy. I look forward to your return.
I stayed here with my significant other and our three children for a long weekend. The house was super cute and clean and very easy to check in and out of. It was in a quiet neighborhood so we didn't have to worry about sleeping through the night. The outside was amazing for the children to play and have a very great time. It's very close to Santa Fe Plaza, but far enough away to not worry about noise and just really have a relaxing time. I would highly recommend this rental for your next stay!
Not as nice as pictures suggest. Just average and in a fairly run down looking neighborhood with muddy streets full of potholes. Also no paper towels provided, and firewood provided was too big to fit into the wood stove so I had to go buy my own.
Great place to getaway from it all, yet close enough to run to town . A great getaway .
Great place to just getaway from it all. Perfect for families to enjoy the outdoors and the fresh air. Couldn’t ask for anything more. Quaint little house (two bed) house perfect to enjoy, relax and spend time with loved ones. Highly recommend... close enough to the city, yet far enough away.
We loved this place and would definitely go again! The accommodations were spacious and had a very “Santa Fe” feel inside and out! Our kids loved the trampoline and zip line out back. The hot tub was fun and was heated when we arrived (we had trouble getting the temp up to a significant level after that though). We never saw our hosts, but did enjoy their welcome note. Things were a bit rickety and there were some strange things that looked like toenail clippings on one of the night stands, but other than that, we were very pleased with the experience. I would definitely recommend!

Neat little place
We all enjoyed our stay and the hosts were responsive. It is quite rustic but we liked that about the place. Reasonably equipped. Sadly there was no welcome basket as mentioned in the description or reviews but these things happen. It was not clear to me from the description that the hot tub is in the main house's courtyard but it is just adjacent to the guest house and was nice to use. No issue w cleanliness as mentioned by a previous review--we were comfortable and didn't notice anything concerning. We didn't feel the slatted door between kitchen and bathroom was an issue but if you have mental bathroom hang ups or are traveling w friends rather than family you might. The kids really loved the place.

Property description needs updating
The photos that are shown for this property are NOT current. The landscaping is over-grown and we were not able to walk beyond the walled courtyard. The area where the "childrens fort" was also overgrown and looked as if it might be falling down. We saw nothing that resembled the vegetable garden area. Only weeds and scrub brush surrounded the the property. The hot tub area was missing half the lights and the tub was full of leaf debris. There was alot of noise from the highway. The casita itself is in need of a DEEP cleaning. The shower had used soap (with hair) and the showerhead needs replacing. This the inside of the kitchen cabinets were dirty. I'm not sure about the previous good reviews for 2018 - but we saw a property in need of attention. We left after the 1st night and Jason did refund the remaining nights. We have stayed at quite a few VRBO properties and this is the only property that as not matched the descriptions or past reviews. I wish I could post our photos of the property.

Nice overall. Really needs a real bathroom door.
This place is charming, and the hot tub is a nice amenity. However, there is just a folding slotted wood gate between the kitchen and bathroom. So basically there is no sense of privacy in the bathroom. Fortunately we have a family full of boys, but even they complained about this. If I had understood about this, I'm not sure I would have stayed here for the price. Additionally, the pullout sofa bed is not functional or useful. We put the mattress on the floor and the kids argued about who had to sleep on it each night because it was not comfortable. Also, no dishwasher, kind of a drag on vacation... The grounds are great for kids though, lots of space to run around outside and no worry about making too much noise. Super cool cathead spider outside the kitchen window that comes alive and feasts on moths at night (don't hurt him!)! Nice hosts.

Wonderful guesthouse in Sunlit Hills, Santa Fe
My daughters, my mother-in-law and I had a fantastic stay at the Kirkman guesthouse. It’s a very sweet little adobe casita that we all found very comfortable. My girls also loved that they have a small picture book library. I highly recommend this rental if you’re traveling with children.

This was a great place to unwind after a day of hiking and sightseeing.
Jason was great and an excellent source of local info. The kids loved the hot tub and I appreciated a place that was authentic and not too fancy since it was our guys trip. It had everything we needed except the pullout sofa had broken springs. I’m not sure the TV worked but we didn’t need it anyway. Surprisingly quiet being attached to the main house and being so close to the interstate. We had a great time!

Great family getaway, cute and homey
This was a great place for our family: a room with twin beds, an outdoor area for them to explore, a cozy kitchen and living room area for eating and hanging out and, of course, the beautiful hot tub. The bathroom is central in the house and has doors leading in from both bathrooms and the kitchen, so it's not a very private room. This was okay for our family, but might be a bit weird depending on how much you value your bathroom privacy. The property has a very nice homey vibe. The hot tub is beautiful and sitting in it under the stars is magical. Great choice if you're looking for something away from the main drag that feels like a real home.

Wonderful stay, particularly for a family
We had a wonderful stay at this cozy adobe home. This was the perfect place for our family with two young children. After long days of touring Santa Fe, being able to come back and free free space to hike, play, and jump on the trampoline was a real gift for the kids! The home was so comfortable and the kitchen was very well equipped. The hosts, Jason and Angela, could not have been kinder or more accommodating. We particularly loved the gifts of fresh veggies and herbs and the beer tastings! I highly recommend this house, especially for young families looking for a home base in Santa Fe.

Great stay at a funky little house
The house was very comfortable, just as advertised, and the owners were friendly and responsive. The layout of the house is a little quirky (all rooms open into the bathroom, basically), but we like quirky. Our family of 4 had plenty of space and no complaints. Hope we get to go back for a longer stay sometime.

Welcome Respite
We stayed at this quaint adobe casita while visiting family in Santa Fe. It was a nice alternative to a hotel room. The hot tub was most welcome after long days of sightseeing and family get togethers. While we did not have much opportunity to cook at "home," the grill was very super-convenient and kitchen supplies well stocked. We found that the internet connection was intermittent; it was strong in the early morning and at night, but not so much during the in-between hours for some reason. I did notice a moderate sewer-like odor at times, but it didn't bother us enough to seek-out the home owners. The casita is adjacent to the main house, but that doesn't interfere with the casita's privacy. We met Angela only briefly, and she was kind enough to leave some fresh lettuce and arugula from her garden; very thoughtful and delicious. The highlight of our weekend was a 2-hour sunset horseback trail ride at Broken Saddle Riding Co. in Cerrillos, recommended by Jason. Getting out into the mountains on a horse will give you a wonderfully different perspective of the area. We definitely would stay at the casita again.

Glad yo enjoyed your stay. Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. I just wanted to address a few of the criticisms that you mentioned. First, the faint sewer odor that you mentioned was most likely due to the washing machine, which I believe we discovered was broken during your stay. It was not draining correctly and had been holding stagnant water. We, too, noticed the smell after you left, and had the washing machine repaired immediately. The internet connection I believe we have also addressed. Since your stay, we have run a dedicated cable to the guest house. I hope that this proves to be more reliable for future guests. Thanks again for your comments.

Just what we were looking for!
My husband and I were traveling with our almost four year old son so having a kitchen was a priority for us. When I found this property on HomeAway, it sounded like the perfect place for us and the price was great! After submitting an inquiry on the guest house, I was contacted by Jason. He suggested that we stay for an extra night and take advantage of the weekly rate which saved us some money. After we had already made our reservation, we decided to arrive a day later so that we could spend our first night of vacation in Carlsbad and visit the caverns before traveling to Santa Fe. Jason was very accommodating and immediately made adjustments to our reservation.
We found the guest house to be very cozy, with a rustic charm similar to some of the guest houses we have stayed at in Fredericksburg, TX. Our son loved having his own room and slept soundly every night that we were there. He also enjoyed the selection of children's books. Jason was so kind as to share several samples of his home-brewed beer with my husband. What a special treat! In addition, we also received fresh vegetables from the Kirkman's garden (collard greens, rainbow chard, garlic chives, and green onions) that we used in the meals we prepared in the guest house's fully equipped kitchen. Another treat was Angela's homemade roasted garlic artisan bread--delicious!
We look forward to our next visit to Santa Fe and staying at the Kirkman's guest house again!

Wonderfully quiet and v. easy and quick access to downtown Santa Fe. Strong WiFi signal if you still need to be connected! Delightfully Unique
This is my second trip to the Kirkman's home in Santa Fe. In fact I can't wait to go back. As and avid HomeAway user I highly recommend this rental, it is absolutely delightful. This home has the quintessencial quaint feel that is Santa Fe. From the porch you can soak in the beautiful sights of the sun rise and peaceful environment surround you. Grab a cup of coffee and try the porch in the morning. In the evening fire up the grill and throw some steaks on, hopefully you can still grab some garden grub compliments of the owners. The hot tub is a divine highlight, we plugged in some jazz and enjoyed some wine and cheese. If you get lucky Jason might let you sample his home brew... so good we had to take some some : ))
This place feels, fresh, clean and has everything you need (from wine bottle opener to a toaster and a coffee pot), without the hustle and bustle. The cost is amazing and can't be beat.
During the day try out the town, just a quick few minutes into town and you are in the middle of everything Santa Fe offers. We took in Canyon Road, the farmers market, some awesome restaurants. P.S. grab some pastries from the french bakery attached to La Fonda (it is heavenly).

Charming and cozy accommodations!
We were greeted with a basket full of fresh grape tomatoes, exotic carrots and other goodies from Jason and Angela's garden. The tomatoes were the BEST we ever tasted...delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed trying out the hot tub and delighted in seeing the milky way and many, many other stars on clear nights. The accommodations were lovely, clean and convenient and trips into town took only about 15 minutes by car. Jason was a great guide, giving us many pointers about what to see and how to get there. Overall we had a great experience from our initial contact with Jason until the day we departed. We highly recommend this place to future visitors to Santa Fe.

Best place to stay in Santa Fe!
A group of friends and I decided last minute to stop in Santa Fe for a night, and we were very lucky to stay at this beautiful property! It is close enough to town, but also in a very scenic and private area. We absolutely loved staying here--Jason and Angela were very accommodating! Next time we go through Santa Fe, we will most definitely be staying here!

About the host
Hosted by Angela and Jason Kirkman
Angela and Jason have been married for 25 years. We enjoy cooking, gardening, and brewing beer. We have traveled extensively and love to photograph and glean recipes as we explore the world. We are incredibly proud of our three children, ages 19 16, and 12, and are very busy following them in their various pursuits. As a family we enjoy hiking, skiing, and camping in the Sangre de Christo Mountains.
Angela’s photography is on display throughout Casa Abuela is from our family’s recent two-year journey around the world. (Learn more about our journey at www.thebigfieldtrip.com). Throughout our travels, we enjoyed lodging with local families, staying off the gringo trail, avoiding hotels at all costs, and generally trying to live like locals. When we returned home to Santa Fe, we decided to open our guesthouse to fellow travelers who crave a similar type of experience. We’re so happy to be hosting your Santa Fe adventure!
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with this property when we first laid eyes upon it. We were attracted by the unique and funky design of the structures and the tranquility of the tree-lined arroyo. On one hand it is on 4 1/2 acres and affords lots of privacy and plenty of space for gardening, and on the other hand it is a quick drive into town. In fact, we bike into the plaza area several times a week, often taking the Rail Trail, which passes close by out home.
What makes this property unique
Our guest house offers plenty of private outdoor space, which we always value when looking for accommodations, especially when travelling with children. The kitchen is large enough and well enough equipped to easily and comfortably cook a wide variety of meals. There is less light pollution out here in the South East Hills, and the stars are incredibly brilliant at night. Enjoy them while reclining in the hot tub.
We hope you’ll enjoy dining from Angela’s hand-made pottery and sipping one of Jason’s intoxicants—made with organic ingredients from our garden and juniper berries wild-harvested right here on the property! If you’d like more of Jason’s hooch, visit one of Tumbleroot’s locations in town or you can put an order in on his website and he’d be happy to bring more home to you. Feel free to take Angela’s pottery home with you as well, leaving payment in cash or venmo. Or check out her gallery—either in person or online—to see what else she has in stock. (Paseo Pottery also offers classes if you feel like getting your hands in the mud!)
