Our lovely gingerbread cottage (center) called 'Hartsease' c. 1867 is on Trinity Park Circle in the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting.
Follow the Wikipedia link below to learn more about our 34-acre National Historic Landmark District in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts.
The area is fondly referred to as 'The Campground'. The Tabernacle and park are directly across from our front porch. Enjoy concerts, lectures, Sunday services, Grand Illumination Night and fireworks in August.
It's all happening right in front of you! Kick back in a rocking chair or walk a few steps to town for ice-creams, restaurants, shopping, beaches and Oak Bluffs Harbor. Don't forget to buy your Black Dog T-shirt!
Hartsease cottage is immaculately clean with a newly painted interior (2011) and a makeover for the exterior in the fall of 2015. Fresh paint...stained front porch deck..new balusters and some replaced shingles in the back of the cottage. We always take good care of the cottage and our renters love that. Photos of our iconic cottage appear on many calendars, postcards and advertisements about the Campground so we've kept the same exterior color scheme my Grandfather started in 1976.
There are two bedrooms upstairs. The master bedroom overlooks the Tabernacle. Furniture includes queen-size bed, chair, a large bureau and desk. Full-length doors open to balcony and gentle breezes. The large back bedroom is drenched with sunlight cascading thru 3 huge skylights. Furniture includes 2 twin beds, bookcase (w/ games and books), 2 bureaus and blanket chests. A very clean bathroom with toilet, linen closet and sink is between the bedrooms.
Downstairs is a large front room with brand new double-size sleep sofa, antique secretary desk, wireless internet, large-screen TV w/ DVD and cable. Off the kitchen and front room is a our dining table that comfortably seats 6 people. The kitchen is small but fully equipped with everything you'll need (see amenities) to make excellent island meals. Floors throughout the cottage are newly sanded and stained oak.
There's a full-size bathroom with shower off the kitchen. An additional private outdoor shower can be used after a swim in Nantucket Sound or any of the fine island beaches. Step out to our large back patio to grill your lobstah (practice your New England accent) and tuna steaks.
We've been told we have the narrowest stairs in the campground...you've got to climb 'em to know. Our grandparents went up and down into their mid-90's. You should be so lucky!
Hartsease is perfect for a couple, parties of 4, or a family with 1-3 grown children. The cottage sleeps 2-4 very well. Parties with 5-6 people (max.) can be considered...you'll have to be friendly!

About Jonathan Hart
My parents and grandparents bought 'Hartsease' in 1976. Seven generations of Hart families have lived on the island and in the Campground dating back to the 1700's. I'm a 30-year advertising photographer and create beautiful scenes of Vermont for notecards. My sister, Joanne, lives in Vermont and enjoys making crafts. My brother, Peter, lives in Salem, MA and enjoys traveling to P'Town on Cape Cod. Our mother, Virginia (Debbie) lives in Orleans on the Cape. My dad 'Pete' didn't get to realize his life-long dream to live in the cottage. We all miss him.

Why Jonathan Hart chose Oak Bluffs
Martha's Vineyard is a beautiful get-away vacation island off Cape Cod. The 'Campground' has a uniquely indescribable pull. I remember coming to the island on the ferry as a little boy. There's a special spirit here. We come to swim, bike, play and chill out. There are quaint towns and villages, locally grown produce at farmers' markets, daily catch for supper at the cottage or a fine restaurant, picnics at one of the fabulous beaches, and history...tons of stories everywhere and people eager to tell them! Stay at 'Hartsease' and you'll be sure to learn about our Granddad, 'Al', who lived to be almost 102! We live and vacation here, so please treat our cottage as if it were your own.
What makes this Cottage unique
The smell of salt air as you board the ferry. Seeing the gulls and rip-tide as you cross Nantucket Sound. The comings and goings of the Campground unfolding right in front of the cottage. Walking to beaches on hot pavement. The hustle and bustle of mid-summer. Grand Illumination Night - a sight to behold (with a few thousand of your new best friends). Fireworks in August...some of the best you've ever seen! Sitting on the front porch for breakfast with the morning paper. Cold drinks on the porch on a hot summer afternoon. Chatting with passersby all wishing they were you! A deep sense of knowing that you'll come back again and again, year after year...you just have to!

Heartsease Cottage, Oak Bluffs MV
My family just finished a weeks vacation at the Heartsease Cottage located in Oak Bluffs. We had a fantastic and memorable week! The cottage itself was very clean and quaint, and had everything you would need for a successful vacation- from beach towels and chairs all the way down to tin foil! The beds were very comfortable. Since the cottage is located across from the Tabernacle, one of our favorite parts of the day was sitting on the front porch drinking coffee in the morning and listening to the piano being played by a professional for events at the Tabernacle. The cottage is within walking distance to the center of town that has tons of shops, restaurants and entertainment for all ages. Also within walking distance to beaches. Since we fell in love with MV we plan to come back in the future. Thank you Hartsease Family!
So glad you and your family had a terrific summer vacation in our beloved Hartsease cottage. Thank heavens you found the tin foil...whew! ;-) As you discovered, Martha's Vineyard has tons of beaches and so much to do...a lot within walking distance of our cottage. We, too, have been amazed by the concert pianist who practices...whoa! Everyone in the Hart family will eagerly welcome you back for your next stay. Wishing you safe travels, and kind thanks!
My family and I had a lovely time at the Heartsease cottage. The owner was extremely helpful and responsive. Everything that we needed was available, easy to find and in great condition. The neighbors were helpful especially when it was time to get ready for illumination. We hope to stay again next season. Thank you Heart family!
Renter love :-)
Everyone in the Hart family was delighted to have you at our beloved Hartsease cottage, and thrilled you had a fantastic summer vacation. Your family ROCKED Grand Illumination! All the neighbors loved watching and helping you. Absolutely...you are warmly welcomed back any time. Oh, and thanks so much for pics of you on the porch surrounded by lanterns.
Wishing your whole family a joy-filled winter!
Vintage Gingerbread Cottage
Had an incredible vacation in Martha's Vineyard, Hartsease Cottage is MAGICAL! Centrally located directly across from the Tabernacle. Cottage has everything you need including a wonderful back patio with a Grill. I am looking forward to returning to Hartsease.
Wonderful, Michael. Many thanks for the positive feedback. Very happy you and your family had a terrific time. We'll be delighted to welcome you back...any time! Already have you on the books for 2020! Gotta love early bookings!
A Grand Vacation
This was our family's second stay at this location. It was better than the first. We had 4-5 stay here and 4-5 at another location. The grandchildren loved that they could ride bikes around the circle and walk to the bakery and candy store. The adults were happy that the children were happy. Eating and cooking was a little difficult with 9 people but we had the table, backyard table and the porch and we tend to cook some and order out to go with it. Not fun to bring 4 young ones to a restaurant. The house was clean and ready when we arrived. Our only question was about Wi-Fi but Jonathan had checked with us to see if everything was OK and I called and asked for password. My fault I didn't read the booklet on the table. The caretaker also stopped in the first day to check on us. Activities included West Tisbury Farmers Market, fishing at Menemsha, beaches, children's performance of Beauty and the Beast, painting lanterns at Tabernacle , biking, 2 tours Trustees of the Reservation (family friendly)on Chappaquidick, Illumination of the lanterns, fireworks, West Tisbury Agricultural Fair(a real old fashioned fair), Chilmark Flea Market and back door donuts. If you don't have a car or bike, no problem. There are buses that go all over the island at a very reasonable price. Only drawback is the ferry reservations. We didn't call early enough and arrived at 8:00 AM and leaving was at 9:00 PM. Did I mention that the weather was perfect. Loved every minute.
Thanks, Linda, and everyone in the Kennedy family. Terrific that you came for another stay...especially the week of Grand Illumination which included Oak Bluff fireworks (some of the best anywhere) with lots of fairs and festivals around the island. Priceless pictures of your grandkids playing and hanging lanterns. Our caretaker, Rick, is the best there is...always nearby if needed or just to stop by to say "hi". Glad you got connected to wireless...yep, passcode in the "Welcome Book". Great to be connected and find all sorts of comings and goings around the island while visiting! Loved having you all back and can't wait for your next vacation at our beloved Hartsease cottage!
Best House Ever
Love it! This was our first time using "The Hartsease" cottage, and it was everything we hoped it would be. The house was spotless, spacious, and equipped with everything needed for a relaxing week on the Vineyard. It was beautiful! Nice kitchen and dining area. The bedrooms were spacious, of which one had skylights, and both beautifully furnished. It was great to have a bathroom downstairs and another one upstairs. Cannot forget the patio. We enjoyed sitting outback at the patio table and enjoying the summer breezes. We also loved sitting on the porch, drinking tea, playing games, and listening to the music at the Tabernacle. We even joined in some of the Tabernacle activities! The location was ideal, walking distance to everything, Circuit Ave, the beach, restaurants and shopping. Thank you for welcoming us in your home. We love the Hartsease, and cannot wait to use it again!
Terrific! Loved sharing our little piece of paradise with you and your family. Come back any time...you'll be enthusiastically welcomed.
Wish I was still at Hartsease!
We spent a week at Hartsease (7/13-7/20/13). This was our second time staying in a gingerbread cottage, but our first at Hartsease. We HIGHLY recommend this cottage! It is clean and bright and not as small as the first cottage in which we stayed.
First of all, the location is perfect. Each morning we would walk over to Mocha Motts to grab coffee and breakfast sandwiches to enjoy on our front porch. There is a lot of activity at the Tabernacle and we tried to experience most (choir practice Sunday morning was a lovely way to gently wake). Circuit Ave is a hop, skip and a jump away so whether you need a late night snack from Back Door donuts, something at the Reliable Supermarket, or just a walk, all of OB is nearby. Parking was no issue for us. We kept the car on the circle in front of the cottage during the day and just moved it to the spot at night. Find the your designated spot during the day if you can. The maps leave a lot to be desired and we did struggle the first night in the dark finding our space. After that zero issue.
The cottage highlights: immaculately clean, huge back bedroom with 3 large skylights. Great closet space throughout. Outdoor shower was AWESOME. We never used the indoor shower. The back patio with a table, chairs, umbrella and a grill was a nice amenity. We ate several dinners back there. The cottage is stocked with pretty much everything you'll need. I like the many shelves and nooks for storage. Four of us, with enough stuff for at least 8, fit quite comfortably in this cottage. It was not cramped.
The combined kitchen, living room and dining room are very comfortable and open. Loved the furniture in the cottage. TV was small but we never turned it on once. The upstairs bathroom doesn't have a shower, but as I said, we showered outside. It was so nice to have that bathroom upstairs, though. It's big and bright. Plenty of clean and fresh linens and towels in there, too.
The stairs are tough but manageable. I did fall down once but I was rushing. After that I learned to take them slow and hang on. No one else in the house seemed to have an issue with them.
One note is there is no air conditioning in the house. We were there when it was almost 100 degrees and it was very hot. That said, it was just plain hot everywhere. I'd still rather be in that cottage in a heatwave than here at work in AC. But that could be a factor if you expect AC.
Jonathan is great to deal with! Love Hartsease!
X-cellent! We are delighted that you and your family had a wonderful vacation in Hartsease and loved your island experiences. That week was a scorcher...even ocean breezes were hot. Important caution: the stairs are steep and to be respected! Good to hear about the MVCMA map to our parking spot. The scale is odd...I'll make another one. Kind thanks for the kudos! We hope you'll come back again and again.
