Property type villa
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 3 baths, pool, hot tub, a/c, private, very quiet

Surfside was fortunately not damaged by Hurricane Irma and enjoys a pristine location on the very edge of the undeveloped National Park lands at Reef Bay. The tranquilizing and unspoiled views from Surfside include the turquoise seas and the jade green forests of the south shore National Park. It's an easy walk on a private path to the often-deserted white sand beach that offers snorkeling, swimming and beach combing. There are few homes on this hard-to-find road to the beach, and this contributes to a very peaceful and quiet location that is blessed with great natural beauty. Despite its end of the world feel, Surfside is only a four mile drive from the restaurants and nightlife of Cruz Bay. Reef Bay remains a wonderful and still secret location that tourists rarely discover.

The charming 3-level villa uses attractive Mediterranean design features such as beautiful stone walls, antique brick patios and a French terra cotta tiled roof. It is built on a sloping hillside and uses three floors to create an atmosphere of privacy and comfort for up to six persons. The living, dining and kitchen areas, plus a south facing sun deck, two covered patios and an en suite bedroom and bath are located on the main (entrance) level. Interior stairs lead to the second bedroom and bath on the upper level. Exterior stairs lead down to the pool, sun deck, hot tub, and the lower level bedroom and bath. Steps from the pool deck lead to the path to the beach.

The living areas are designed to provide you with a comfortable and relaxing home away from home. The cathedral ceilings, rose tiled floors and Indonesian teak furniture create a tropical atmosphere in the intimate living room. While nothing beats the mesmerizing sounds of the surf below and nature outside, an iPod ready stereo system and a flat screen HDTV with DVD provide electronic entertainment. The cook's kitchen features brand new marble countertops, a farm sink and professional stainless steel appliances, including a dual-fuel stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and all cooking and dining accessories. A gas barbeque is located on the patio and the washer and dryer are located on the lower level. Surfside offers two dining locations, both with romantic ocean views. The interior teak dining table seats 6 comfortably, as does the beautiful outdoor teak dining table located on the oceanfront deck.

All three bedrooms are similar in size and furnishings and all offer good privacy, air conditioning and great ocean views. The queen bedroom on the main level has French doors that open to a small deck. The upper level king bedroom also has a small deck with lovely views. The lower level king bedroom is off the pool deck. Each bedroom has an attractive adjoining tiled bath and shower and there are flat screen TVs on all three levels.

With refreshing ocean breezes, all day sun, fabulous views, and the soothing background music of waves breaking on the beach, Surfside is a charming and romantic hideaway for honeymooners and lovers. With frequent wildlife sightings and great swimming and hiking, the villa is also an excellent choice for nature lovers and families with beach loving kids. It's the perfect location for the perfect vacation!

Why Alan Pedersen chose Fish Bay

After looking all over the Caribbean, we drove down an out of the way road on St. John and discovered Reef Bay with its end of the world location, incredible views and fabulous beach. We knew our search was over!

What makes this villa unique

You can walk out your door and enjoy great hiking, beachcombing and swimming. Deer, iguana and many types of birds are frequent visitors. You can hike to the petroglyphs and sugar mill ruins from the villa.

Low-Key, Authentic Island Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Family trip for 6 adults (3 couples) from July 2-9, 2017. We are not "resort people", and Surfside was all we could have asked for and more. Beautiful natural private hillside setting with unobstructed views out across Reef Bay from the pool, balconies and bedrooms (previous reviewer's comment about trees needing trimming has been addressed). Three air-conditioned suites with full bathrooms located on three separate floors provided privacy, but with ample communal space to eat, relax, swim, and enjoy each other's company. We enjoyed leisurely mornings waking up to the sounds of birdsong or crashing surf, and having coffee/breakfast out on the deck, followed by a midday dip in the pool or a walk down the forested trail to the beach. Reef Bay was great for sitting or strolling, and for access to the National Park trails, but for swimming and snorkeling, we explored the calmer north shore beaches ~20-30 min away (beach chairs, coolers, and some snorkel gear all provided). For meals out, the ride to Cruz Bay was an easy 15 min, and we ate three excellent gourmet dinners at Extra Virgin, La Tapa, and Zozo's, but with the house's large grill and well-equipped kitchen, we ended up eating more of our meals in than out. Fourth of July festivities on the island made our week extra-special. I can honestly think of almost nothing to complain about regarding our stay.

The property is currently listed for sale, so I highly recommend staying here while you still can... Or if you have $1.5M to spend on your very own island getaway, please consider inviting us to stay with you again in the future!

Serene and Secluded Dream Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our second visit to Surfside was as perfect as the first. Great breezes and views with decks and patios on multiple levels for relaxing after a swim in the pool. We walked down to the beach every day and never saw another person, save for a surfer one day. The long white sand beach is great for walking and beach combing and is completely private. If you're adventurous, you can hike over to the Reef Bay sugar plantation. Saw deer on the path every day and an iguana made a daily visit to the trees by the pool. The house and kitchen are fully equipped and the staff at Caribbean Villas was very helpful and checked in with us to make sure we had everything we needed. Falling asleep listening to the waves was heavenly...Can't wait to return.

Good Times!! Great Memories!!

  • 5 of 5

Stunningly Beautiful!! Awesome vacation, woke up each morning to watch the sunrise over the water from our balcony (got some great pics)!! We enjoyed our stay here from sunrise to sunset, we had all accomadations we needed, really like the fact we were in a pretty private place.... one of my favorite things was to walk down the trail to the private beach area, so much beauty and nature around from the flowers, birds, deer, lizards, to the hermit crabs!! I love collecting shells and beach glass which I had some great finds down on the beach!! Great beach area to just kick back and relax and listen to nature and the waves!! Close to shopping, boating, just hanging and having a few drInks!! Highly recommend !! ☀️🌊?🌙?🎉?🍷?😃?🕶?

Wonderful 3 bedroom villa with pool with spectacular ocean view, hot tub and three sun bathed decks

  • 5 of 5

We had a family reunion at this secluded private villa with beach access. Easy drive from town. 3 Bedrooms with very comfortable beds for up to six people each with their private bathrooms and AC. Each bedroom is on a different level allowing each couple privacy. Kitchen was well stocked and we cooked most evening enjoying cocktails by the pool and hot tub.

This property faces undeveloped land giving a sense of seclusion and unobstructed spectacular views. Great location for family gatherings or couples who desire to share an amazing home.

Love Surfside.

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed several times at this beautiful villa. You can walk down the path to the beach and swim and spend the day, the villa has everything you need for your stay. Kitchen is wonderful and the porches are private and pool area perfect with shade spots. So easy to get back into town and to other day trips hiking and visiting other beaches. Surfside is a perfect spot for our next vacation to St.John.

Great secluded location- house in need of repairs

  • 3 of 5

Our party of six stayed in Surfside for a week in May and found the property location to be secluded as described with plenty of room. Upon arrival from the ferry, the island greeters were very friendly and made our check-in and escort process a breeze. We were amazed by the terrain and the slope grade that vehicles had to drive on. The house has three bedrooms total, but the third bedroom is down by the pool and you must walk outside to get there. Also there is a five minute HIKE to get to the beach down some stairs, rocky river bed, through a grove of crab holes, some shrubbery and onto the beach. We estimate 300 yards of moderately rough terrain.

Here are the pros: Great galley kitchen with everything you might need. The pots and pans were of good quality and there were lots of plates, bowls & utensils. The kitchen appliances were new and higher end. Each room had air conditioning if you wanted to use it (we used it at night). There were ample amounts of bath and beach towels. The outdoor furniture was durable and good quality. If it rains, they have cable with HBO. There were nice touches such as island information brochures, microwavable popcorn, kitchen sponge, dishwashing soap, a small supply of paper towel and toilet paper rolls & hairdryers. And of course, the seclusion and hearing the crash of the waves from the house.

Here are the cons: the house was built in 2001 but needs some minor repairs such as fixing the broken windows, sliding screen door and sink plungers. The pool is surrounded by trees, which would be a positive if the trees didn't constantly shed leaves into the pool (we had to clean the pool with the net multiple times a day) and block the view of the ocean when sitting in the pool lounge chairs. Also the pool filter/cleaning system seemed inadequate because the pool was always cloudy. The beach is rocky with parts of it with many sea urchins. There are some spots that are easily walkable in the water, but I would recommend water shoes. There are some good waves on this side of the island, and we saw a surfer on our beach.

Over all it was an average stay with everything you might need in a house.

Owner's Response: Caribbean Villas and Resort Management would like to thank you for choosing Surfside Villa and for taking the time to provide us and potential future guests with feedback on your stay. We take all guest issues very seriously and strive to resolve any problems as quickly and professionally as possible and the items tha you referred to have been addressed. We were happy to hear that you felt the cookware, dishes, and appliances were of professional quality. We strive to make each property as home-like as possible so that you can walk in and have everything you need to prepare a meal, drinks, or just relax in comfort. Listening to the waves crash on the shore of Reef Bay as you fall asleep at night is such a serene image and we are happy that you could experience and enjoy that aspect of the property. The nature path to the beach is one of the features that guests enjoy most about the villa, and wildlife sightings, including deer, iguanas, birds and land crabs are part of the experience. The beach itself is long and sandy and great for walking and beach combing, but walking in the water on the reef is not recommended. Entry into the water should be made at the end of the beach where there is a break in the reef and excellent snorkeling. As I mentioned previously we are currently addressing the issues you mentioned such as the windows, sliders, and leaves in the pool. We have regular landscaping at Surfside but we've had substantial spring rains this year that have caused heavy growth in the trees, bushes, etc. We agree that the trees surrounding the pool need to be trimmed back and have scheduled that to be done. For minor maintenance items such as the windows and sliders, we found these to be quick and easy fixes and wish we’d heard from you during your stay so that we could have taken care of them for you. We like to hear about any issues you might have right away because we want to tend to them as quickly as possible so that your vacation will be perfect. We have a professional maintenance staff expressly for this purpose. Likewise, as there were unseasonably heavy rains during your stay that can affect pool chemistry, we would have been happy to have provided additional pool service for. The pool equipment and pool deck are new and Surfside undergoes annual upgrades in an effort to provide the highest quality guest experience. We hope that you will consider using Caribbean Vilas again and it would be our pleasure to welcome you back to St. John.
