Jasmine Cottage

This charming Self Catering Cottage for two is situated one one-half acres - on the same property as the main residence. You will enjoy your privacy in this romantic cottage. Amelia, the owner, is a cosmopolitan gem who has lived in France, Italy, London and La Jolla, California. She is privileged to be a Joyce from Joyce Country and her knowledge alone is worth the trip. This honeymooner's dream cottage has been rated in the Guardian Newspaper as one of the special places to stay in Ireland.

A warm welcome awaits you.

Amelia Joyce, the owner of this luxury property, loves all things Italian. Foreign accents, notably Italian and Mexican, bestow warmth to this charming retreat. Rough plastered walls and a rich palette dictated by oriental rugs, show off works of art, pottery and ceramics collected from around the world. The big sitting room has sink-in armchairs before a lovely turf fire. A selection of books to choose from. In the generous bedroom, the bed linen is luxuriously Italian. French doors and windows open to garden vistas and the waters of Lough Corrib.

Special Attractions In Connemara. Amelia's Favourites:

Angeling: Fishermen come from all over the world to fish Lough Corrib. Sir William Wilde, father of Oscar, wrote a book titled 'Lough Corrib' published in l872. The Wilde family had a home 'Moytura House' near Headford and a hunting lodge called 'Illaunroe (attached by a causeway to the mainland) in Lough Fee near Leenane. Here, Oscar learned to fish.

Walking: Walk the 'The Western Way' a renowned walk that starts close to Amelia's cottage on the Glann Road and ends at Maam - l4km. Or take 'The Western Way' which descends to Lough Inagh Valley...a sight which captures your heart forever.

Swimming: Take a dip in Lough Na Foohey. Surrounded by the wild symphony of rugged mountains. There is a sorrow here but also a sharp beauty, a man goes cold with the beauty of it and is glad to be alone.

Picnicking: Take your picnic basket and drive to Delphi which owes it's name to the Marquis of Sligo, who returning from the Grand Tour, named his fishing Lodge Delphi. In ancient times, Delphi was considered to be the centre of the known world, the place where heaven and earth met. This was where man was closest to God and Delphi in Mayo is exactly that place.

Golf: A fine 18 hole golf club is just minutes away.

Retaurants: Excellent resturants are located nearby.

Who better than to show off the highlights of Connemara than a Joyce from Joyce Country - A name boldly imprinted on the map of Connemara. The Ancient clan has been around forever...well, at least since 1169. This romantic cottage has been featured in several top European magazines.

Accommodation: Self-Catering

About amelia Joyce

When I was young, all the world was beautiful to me, but Connemara was a great splendour. This heroic place with it's symphonic landscape has been the perpetual solace throughout my life. I lived in La Jolla, California for over thirty years where I worked as an Interior Designer. Returning home to Connemara I built my dream cottage on a hill overlooking Lough Corrib. As the writer H. Morton wrote in his travel book (In search of Ireland) 'and you feel that if God chose a place to reveal himself it would be upon theses western hills at sunset when the whole hushed world is tense with beauty and earth seems waiting for a revelation'. If I can't find peace and tranquility here then it is not to be found. It will give me great pleasure to share this haven with you.

Why amelia Joyce chose Oughterard

Experience the warm hospitality of Amelia Joyce's Cottage, reflecting the comfort, elegance and charm of the owners former residence in Italy, California and her birth place in Joyce Country.

What makes this cottage unique

I am in the process of writing a Guide Book on Connemara. The title of the book is 'Journeys Through Connemara with Amelia Joyce'. My guests receive a copy of these journeys taking them to places that most tourists never see.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A beautiful cottage. A generous set of groceries welcomed us as did Amelia herself. A classy retreat with everything required to make the experience special. All the most interesting places in Connemara are easily reached from Oughterard; Clifden, Westport, Delphi, Roundstone and Galway city. An Absolute "perfect Place".

Perfectly Charming Cottage in the Ideal Location

  • 5 of 5

Jasmine Cottage is the perfect place to stay for a memorable Connemara vacation! The cottage is thoughtfully designed and tastefully decorated w/ comfortable furniture and charming ambiance that feels just like your Irish 'home'. There is a lovely view out and a lawn area with table and chairs for dining alfresco. The cottage is located just a short drive from the most delightful Connemara village, Oughterard filled with vibrant pubs that feature authentic Irish music, gourmet restaurants, 2 supermarkets, several cafes and butchers w/ prepared meals to go. It is an easy 30 minute drive to the vibrant city of Galway filled with every kind of shopping, eating, drinking and entertainment. Galway's young population has a pulse that's very different from the quiet dramatic landscapes of the countryside so the contrast makes for a memorable varied experience .

All that being said, the most delightful aspect of Jasmine Cottage is the charming and personable owner that will greet you with a wealth of information to make your holiday a complete success. Amelia is like your 'Auntie Mame' with books, maps and writings, unique suggestions and clever itineraries that you can use (I suggest you do) or not but will open a world of Connemara that you would otherwise miss. The cottage is just the right location for at least 5 great day trips, and Amelia will happily make suggestions or reservations (if asked) to unique places that only someone who grew up here, travelled the world and the returned home would know how unique and special they are. Not to be missed, Delphi Lodge, Cong, Clifdon, Roundstone, Kylemore Abbey Gardens.

Connemara is as a dramatic a landscape as you could imagine and as unspoiled as you might hope for; each vista takes your breath away. No doubt, this is the part of Ireland you would not want to breeze through in a short quick visit but rather linger and get the true sense and unique charms of this area and it's personable residents.

Great base to visit Connemara - a must when going to Ireland. Wonderful cottage and hostess!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in Apr/16 at Jasmine Cottage - using it as a base to see the Connemara area of Ireland. Amelia's knowledge, insight, humor and suggestions were like having our own travel guide for a part of Ireland one must see. We took her advise on most day excursions. Amelia has a draft of a travel guide in the Cottage for the area which was very helpful and we often used to plan our sightseeing. Her passion is understandable, Connemara is breathtaking. The cottage worked well for two of us. We ate in most nights and had a couple of stay at home days. Amelia's taste and care shows - this feels like a home. She generously provided breakfast materials for a few days and 2-3 nights material for fires. Things like wi-fi, heat (no extra charge) etc worked well - neither a guarantee unfortunately in some places. Only turned the TV on twice for some Masters golf (thank you BBC, since there are no sports channels). Heartily recommend.

Perfect Irish escape!

  • 5 of 5

First off, Amelia thank you so very much for your dedication to ensuring our trip was memorable. My wife and I were fortunate to have your expertise available when planning out our escapes. Every recommendation we followed was most excellent. Your travel book was our key to success during our visit. There is absolutely no way we could have planned out a more in-depth trip to Connemarra if we had tried. If you are reading this review considering going here, just do it. I promise you will not regret it, and Amelia ensures you want nothing during your stay. Slainte!

Wonderful cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our 6 nights stay in this wonderful cottage. Very comfortable, clean, and oh so quiet with rarely more than the sound of birds and wind. Nice view of the lake, too. Amelia was readily available with tips of where to go and what to see and her take along book of journeys provided great information. I would love to return some day!
