Spectacular Bali Style Vacation Home in Atenas

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Relax in lovely Villa Picaflora, a private gated community located two kilometers outside of the town of Atenas. We are centrally located in Costa Rica, about 25 kilometers from the airport, and near the new highway to San Jose and the Pacific beaches.

This beautifully landscaped Bali-style home is located high on a ridge with fantastic views of the scenic mountains and valleys surrounding Atenas. The house has three bedrooms, one with a king-size bed, one with a queen-size bed and an optional twin bed, and each with a full bathroom ensuite. The third bedroom has a twin bed. The design is open concept with awesome cathedral ceilings, sliding glass doors to the outside patios in all rooms, and lovely handcrafted furnishings throughout. The property has a large parking area, a private infinity pool, and a pond.

Atenas is a friendly rural town. Close to all amenities, the Atenas area has many restaurants, supermarkets, medical and dental services, banks and a post office. Bustling San Jose is only a 30 minute drive away. Easy day trips to many of Costa Rica's famous attractions (beaches, volcanos and rain forests) are possible.

The weather in Atenas is ideal - the best in the world if you will - warm and breezy by day, low humidity, and comfortably cool at night. Air conditioning or heating are never needed!

terrific experience

  • 5 of 5

Costa Rica is a beautiful country. The people of very friendly. The weather is perfect. What a great place to vacation

John and Diane's house in the PicaFlora community is just like the pictures present. The lay out of the house is very comfortable and the views from all sides of the house are scenic. We loved the fact that we could open the sliding doors and feel like we were outside all the time.

The kitchen was lovely to cook in, we ate most of our evening meals at the house, outside overlooking the valley. A spectacular view! The pools was a tad bit cool but once you got use to it, a perfect refreshing experience. The gardens surrounding the pool were very pretty and well maintained.

The town of Atenas is a nice, safe community. We explored several restaurants recommended by John, attended the catholic church, went to the awesome market on Friday, and discovered a really good fish market "Del Mar". They had a Chili Tasting Fund Raising event while we were there. This was an excellent opportunity to meet some of the local Expats and enjoyed hearing about their recommendations and experiences. We had such a nice time at this event. We experienced the Pacific Coast, ventured to Sarchi, took a tour of the El Toledo coffee plantation (a must do Tour) drove to the Poas Volcano (unfortunately the cloud cover was very heavy and we could see nothing, despite the fact we arrived early morning, and the cost is salty) This was my first experience of driving in a foreign country. A bit nerve racking although I did adjust, must admit the roads are much different than the US. Some of the "roads" I drove on were more like paths!

We will definitely return to this beautiful country. These is so much to see and explore.

Loved John and Diane's house, although it was not as clean as I would have liked.

We highly recommend some spanish usage and most restaurants and shops prefer colones instead of US dollars or credit cards

Peaceful Serenity with Gracious Hosts

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had much pleasure staying in this beautifully-appointed, understated home atop a ridge in the Central Valley. Its central location near the town of Atenas made it convenient for necessary shopping (including a great outdoor market on Fridays), as well as close enough to the San Jose airport to permit an easy introduction to this beautiful country, and city life, if desired.

The home is well-designed, well-maintained, with comfortable furnishings/amenities, and spectacular views from every point in the house. We especially enjoyed the back patio, as we breakfasted with the sunrise, and ate dinner as the night lights appeared throughout the valley. Lounging by the intimate pool, just off the master bedroom, was so relaxing as the birds flitted about and beautiful flowers adorned the garden. (Photos do not capture the beauty of the house/gardens.)

Day trips to the Doka Coffee Plantation, Irazu Volcano, and the Lankester Botanical Gardens were all interesting, worthwhile adventures that show off what this Central Valley region has to offer.

Our gracious hosts, Diane and John, were so informative and helpful, even assisting us with a phone purchase in Atenas on our first day. In addition to answering our myriad of questions, they (and their friendly neighbors) graciously entertained us on a day trip to the beautiful beaches at Esterillos. Thanks so much to Diane and John. We could not ask for a more comfortable and enjoyable week in your splendid home-away-from home. We'll be sure to consider your home if coming to Costa Rica again and highly recommend it to others.

Great property near the great little town of Atenas

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in this upscale house on the top of a hill was wonderful. The open floor-plan house with modern kitchen house has everything one needs for a place in the central highlands. An easy 30 minute drive from the San Jose airport lands one in the little town of Atenas and a five minute car ride up into the hills finds you in the heart of luxury.

Atenas has everything you need to make this your base of operation to explore the central highlands. Poas Volcano is about 1.5 hour drive and Arenal Volcano is 2.5 hours. Both can be day-trips, but we stayed overnight in Arenal to get the best use of our time. Lots of other fun stuff to do in the outdoors. And returning to the house after an active day to find the pool inviting us in for a dip was a nice addition.

Awesome Surprise!

  • 5 of 5

I had never rented a property before through VRBO and was somewhat skeptical of what to expect upon arrival at the house in Atenas. I had seen the listing for this property and thought it would be great if the house actually appeared half as nice as the pictures represented. My group (my and financee, along with another couple) were in complete awe after walking in to this beautiful Balinese style home and finding that the pictures were accurate, but really didn't do the property justice. Everything was amazing from the local wood furniture, the books to help us brush up on our Spanish as well as learn more about Costa Rica, large kitchen with all necessary pots/pans/utensils, walls of glass opening up to the valley breezes, and wonderful landscaping. We just couldn't have dreamed up a better property to stay at for 3 nights. John was also very helpful in quickly addressing a faulty shower issue (fixed in minutes), recommmending restaurants/bars, and directions to zip line tours. This was the break from reality we all needed and was so nice we actually stayed at the house the majority of the time and cooked on own dinners each nite as the town of Atenas couldnt offer us what we had already found at this home, paradise. I would highly recommend not missing out on this gem if you have a chance to visit.

New York, NY/ The Bahamas

Fabulous time! Wonderful Property!

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend (25) and I (24) had been talking about taking a trip together for months. We both come from the same country, The Bahamas, but I live in New York and he lives back home. We decided that a trip to Costa Rica would be a welcomed geographic and cultural departure from the (fairly) flat lands of the Bahamas and the bitter cold New York was facing in December/January. We were supposed to arrive on the 30th but ran into some nightmarish roadblocks at the airport on the way. We finally arrived on the 31st just in time to ring in the New Year (we spent it outside on the porch watching the fireworks in the hills). The owners, Diane and John were so accommodating and helpful. John met us at the grocery store in Atenas, waited while we picked up a few snacks and things for the trip and drove ahead of us to ensure that we arrived at the house without getting lost.

The house is beautiful. In truth, the photographs, though well shot, don't do it justice. The views from every wall of the house are incredible. We woke up every morning to the sound of wildlife and the view of the sun glistening on the pool outside the master bedroom. It was fantastic! The location is fairly central to most things. We wanted to hike in the cloud forest, go zip lining , see the pacific ocean (my boyfriend had only ever experienced the Atlantic and Caribbean sea), see the Arenal Volcano, and see some toucans and monkeys if at all possible. All of these things were about 2-2.5 hours away from us. But we rented a car and the drive felt like nothing at all (literally everywhere you turn there's a beautiful, photo-worthy view of lush, green mountains and canyon cliffs). To be honest though, even with all the lovely scenery, we were often so comfortable lounging at the house it was hard to leave. Because of all the travel headaches and the busy work/school schedules we left not too long before, we were exhausted when we arrived. We spent the first day and a half resting at the house, swimming in the pool, cooking together… it was lovely. Diane and John stayed in the small cottage at the side of the house but we only really saw them in the morning- although they were on the same property they were completely respectful of our space. They were friendly and more than willing to give us pointers if we needed it. I would recommend this property in a heartbeat. It was definitely romantic, but I could see this being a great place for families/ groups of friends.

The Address is Paradise!

What an amazing week! This Bali Style house was a wonderful place to call home. The weather was ideal and the view from the covered porch looked out over the valley and mountains. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the swimming pool! The pictures were very accurate and the house was very well equipped. The homeowners were great and were just a phone call away when we had questions. Don't pass up this property!
