About gaylynea frank

My wife, I and our oldest son left the city life in 1992 to move to the beautiful Upper Peninsula of MI... over 20 years and two more children later and we still enjoy all the UP has to offer.

Our children were able to grow up enjoying hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, swimming, 4-wheeling and anything else they could find to do in the great outdoors...

We truly thank God for allowing us to live in an area where we can enjoy His creation to the fullest.

On behalf of myself, my wife and our children, we look forward to being of service to our guests and ensure that their stay at The North Lodge is unforgettable!

Michael & Gaylynea

Why gaylynea frank chose Michigan

My wife and I always dreamed of building our own log lodge. After 3-1/2 years of hard work and 2 semi-truck loads of raw logs that dream finally came true.

As a builder, I enjoy being original in concept, design, function and quality coupled with our love for the outdoors we were inspired to bring the outdoors in! This was accomplished by utilizing the natural wood tones of nine wood species and the rugged look of stone resulting in a unique custom-designed, handcrafted, log lodge. The serene wooded setting of the Upper Peninsula forest only adds to the calm tranquility you experience with each stay.

If you want to enjoy the many activities the water offers, the lodge is located only moments away from many in-land lakes, public beaches & boat launches or maybe you'd prefer the scenic drive to one of Michigan's beautiful Great Lakes.

What makes this lodge unique

We personally have enjoyed friendships, family and quality time that is shared in the comfortable environment of the lodge. As an avid outdoorsman, the get-away experience in the woods (or nearby on the water) have always given great peace and relaxation. The North Lodge offers that same peace and relaxation, whether sitting under the covered porch, around the fire-pit or in the comfort of the lodge itself. We personally receive great satisfaction from the experiences of our guests; their enjoyment and pleasure at the lodge makes our attention to detail worth every effort.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a great place! We all enjoyed our stay and it worked out great for our trip.

Thanks!

The North Lodge is truly a gem of the UP.

Having never been to Upper Michigan before, we did some pretty extensive searches for places to stay that offered some basic comforts. We found that primitive, yet beautiful campsites were abundant, and there were more than enough roadside motels that would fit the needs of our family of 5. But with either of these lodging options we felt that something was missing. Investigating the offerings on VRBO and finding this wonderful accommodation, we found what we were looking for.

As other reviews have stated, this lodge is spacious, comfortable, and stocked with everything that both a family looking for adventure, or a group of outdoormen, would possibly need. What perhaps needs more mentioning is just how lovely the area is.

The lodge is located in a rural setting, surrounded by other homes with vast yards and bountiful trees, giving the lure of seculsion and privacy. The backyard has a green space that is framed by more trees, suggesting the sense of being in the woods. Complete with an open sky and fire pit, one can truly imagine being at a remote campsite.

The location is another one of the attractions of the lodge. It is within an hour's drive to either Lake Superior, or Lake Michigan, and the activities in Manistique, Muninsing, and Tahaquemon Falls, areas in which we concentrated our time. For the outdoor enthusiast, there is a plethora of lakes nearby, along with ATV and snowmobile trails.

Be aware with the seculsion of this lodge that there are some trade offs. A full service grocery store will not be just a few minutes down the road, and that you will be inconvenienced with no Internet or cell phone ability. You'll need to take that into consideration when making your decision. For our family, that trade off was worth the benefits that these accomodations gave us.

A sincere thank you to the Franks for making sure that their home was so clean upon arrival, and for the little extras (shampoo, dish soap, laundry detergent). These fine touches make you feel like you're at an all service hotel, while being in one of the most beautiful, quiet places you will find.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words. I am so glad that y'all had a wonderful first-stay in the beautiful U.P. and enjoyed some of the fantastic sights it offers. I hope y'all will consider a return to the U.P. and to The North Lodge... [Think about how beautiful it would be in the Fall ;)! ] P.S. You are definitely right about the trade-off... What I find though, is that the lack of "connection" makes it so much easier to unwind & disconnect for a while...and RELAX!

This Lodge is becoming my favorite home away from home. Reasonable price, clean and comfort.

My second year visiting property. The lodge is unique, cozy and has the comforts of home but set in a quiet country atmosphere. Everything you look for when visiting the Upper Peninsula for a short or extended stay. We will return next year and have made it our go to U. P. vacation rental. I love that the Lodge doesn't have internet. The one place my entire group puts phones, computers and tablets down to interact with each other face to face talking, laughing and relaxing. It's a little piece of undisturbed heaven. There are so much activities up north for your whole family and this Lodge is located smack dab in the middle. It's an amazing time. The pictures just don't capture the full beauty of the North Lodge. If your in need of rebooting, relaxing, getting back to feeling bonded to family and friends this is the place to be. I did feel this year it was less secluded than last. Maybe the tree line was thicker in 2016. First visit I couldn't see or hear any neighbors on left or right of Lodge just beautiful wooded area. This time neighbors on right of Lodge made their presence known on the first day. They were pleasant, said hi and waved as they made a U turn in Lodge driveway. I could see them through tree line and heard them while cooking out. Still The North Lodge has a very private feel to the landscape of woods. There's not much more to say except I'll be back in 2018!!

Owner's Response: Ok, so I know this will sound corny, but... I literally had a tear come to my eye while reading your review -- It is EXACTLY what we want our guests to feel & what we feel each time we are able to spend at the lodge -- I hope y'all will consider it your U.P. home and enjoy it whenever you have the opportunity. Thank you again, for capturing what The North Lodge was meant to be.

A Great Time

  • 5 of 5

The North Lodge is a beautiful, clean cabin run by wonderful and caring people. Gaylynea went out of her way to make sure we were happy. I would recommend this cabin to anyone that wants to stay in the UP for a short time or long time!

The cabin was located central to all the activities that we wanted to do. It was great to have a cozy cabin to come back to each night.

My only suggestion for this cabin would be to have a toilet in the lower sleeping area!!

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We got in early Friday afternoon, no problem finding The Lodge. It was clean, cozy and inviting. The grounds and especially the fire pit were perfect. Sure enjoyed the bakery, party store and Moose Du Noord pizza just two miles east. Everything was as advertised, 5 stars for this stay.

Up North Treasure

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place to call "home base" for adventures in the UP! The house is gorgeous, well stocked, tastefully decorated, well-appointed, clean and perfectly exudes "up north" ambiance. The wrap around porch has plenty of seating extending the living area - we enjoyed morning coffee outside each day! The firepit was a hit with the whispering, giggling, s'more gobbling teens. The cozy TV area hosted the guys cheering on the Lions during pre-season and a late night HGTV girls gabfest. If it sounds like we did nothing but sit around at the house - it's true! Days were packed with hikes, waterfall climbs and swimming all within 75 minutes. The Up North Lodge was the perfect setting to rest and recharge after very active days. It's a gem and look forward to a return visit!

P.S. Check the weather, bring a car with nav or map out your adventures before you arrive - you will be blissfully "off the grid" upon arrival with absolutely NO cell service. :)
